Cisco Firewall :: Two Host With Same Nat On ASA 5505
Mar 22, 2011
I have 2 web servers that replicate between them (two different internal ip). My idea is that if one of them will not work, the other to do the relay.I have a Cisco ASA 5505 I can do a nat for each machine. How should I set ?

Based on the configuration pasted below, we believe the host (10.0.2.200 / 255.255.255.0 GW: 10.0.2.1 with external DNS servers configured) should have access to the web. However, it cannot resolve any names nor can it connect outside.

Instead of using a IP address I would like to use a host address that points to a NTP pool.An example would be:ntp server 0.north-america.pool.ntp.org Can this be done on the ASA series?

I'm using an ASA5505 (8.4(1)) and would like to block port 80 on a specific host in the LAN so machines in other remote LANs connected via VPN can't access this port on the host. Devices in the local LAN should have access to this port on the host. Here are the commands I'm using:
-access-list block_port extended deny tcp any host 10.20.10.20 eq 80
-access-list block_port extended permit ip any any
-access-group block_port out interface inside
These commands are not working as I would expect them to. When I browse to http://10.20.10.20 from a remote machine over the VPN tunnel I am able to access the host web server.

I ran into a very interesting problem that occurred today and I'm trying to figure out why it happened. If it was one ASA 5505 that just required the reboot, then I'd have just chalked it up to a glitch, but when we built a new AD/ DNS server on the main network at the main site and changed the 3 Remote site ASAs to point to the new DNS server in the DHCPD options, none of them could ping any local host names to the DNS server at the main site they were now pointing too, but external host names { URL} all translated and pinged fine.
From a laptop on one of the remote sites, we could ping the new AD/DNS server(192.168.0.3) and the old AD/DNS server(192.168.0.2) and everything else at the main site, and telnet to port 53 showed successful across the Easy VPN from the Remote site to the new server at the main site. When wire shark was added to the new DNS server at the main site, the DNS request and replies for {URL}, for example, came and worked fine, but any requests for local resources never made it to the server from the remote sites.
A reboot of one of the Remote Site ASA's corrected the issue. Then I rebooted the other two remote site ASAs, and now DNS was working fine for everybody. I had also tried clearing the ARP cache on the ASAs before resorting to rebooting them. I also tried rebooting the laptop thinking the local DNS cache needed cleared before resorting to rebooting the ASAs. I'm struggling to understand why external, public host names made it through and resolved from the remote sites to the new server at the main site, but anything local failed before even reaching the new server(The new DNS server could resolve requests made by computers at the main site, but the remote sites that traverse the Easy VPN from the ASAs failed). The new AD/DNS server is the only server configured for DNS for all remote site computers.
Is any of this making sense? I'm wondering if clearing the x late or local host tables would have corrected it without having to reboot. I'm just trying to grasp the understanding here and figure out what happened.

I have created a RA VPN with a 5505 using Anyconnect client. My VPN functions perfectly, but now I am trying to limit access so that only one single host on my network can connect. To do this I tried creating an ACL permiting the host and denying all other traffic, but it does not work it seems every one can connect. how I can limit the outside access to a single host?

I have an ASA 5505 with software version 8.2(1). It is making DHCP requests for IPSec clients that connect to the ASA. The DHCP requests packets the ASA makes have an extra '00' appended to the hostname field, and the length field is the size of the hostname + 1. The DHCP server is Microsoft Server 2003 and this causes the hostname to be registered with an unknown character which appears as []hostname. Then when server 2003 tries to update the DNS record, it fails because of the invalid character in the hostname. Is there anyway to have the ASA have the correct length for the hostname field in the DHCP packet, or a workaround that will solve this problem?

We just changed ISPs and now have a /29 routed subnet to be used on our ASA 5510 (8.4) instead of the one public ip we had before. There are a couple of PAT translations that were previously setup on the "interface" address which i now want to assign to a different ip address further in my subnet.
So i just changed this:
object network BMMM
nat (inside, outside) static interface service tcp smtp smtp
to:
object network BMMM
nat (inside, outside) static other.external.ip.in.subnet service tcp smtp smtp
And assumed that this would work,y it does not, and this leaves me unable to contact that machine from the outside. And shoud i also change my access-list?The relevant access-list rule is:access-list outside_in extended permit tcp any object BMMM eq smtp

But If I try to ping to the Laptop I get the followed:
asa5505# ping 192.168.1.100
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 192.168.1.100, timeout is 2 seconds:

Success rate is 0 percent (0/5)
asa5505#
From the Laptop to the ASA5505 I can Ping successfully.

I would swear this worked at one point. I have a corporate office, and I have IPSec tunnels out to my outside offices. The corporate office has an ASA5510, and most of the remote offices are running off of Pix506s, one office has an ASA5505.
When anyone connects through WebVPN, using AnyConnect or not, they can contact any of the cifs shares for servers inside the corporate office. They cannot, however, contact cifs shares on servers that are in the remote offices.

Wondering if on the ASA (8.4) its possible to do something like what DNS rewrite does, but with IP requests. Scenario. Mobile phone accesses a web app inside our network fine over cellular. Once it comes inside on to wifi it still has the public IP address cached so the ASA doesn't allow its request to loop around and the app appears broken. We're considering lowering the TTL on the DNS host entry but I think we are battling phones/mobile OS's that don't have a strict adherence to name resolution standards. A lot just seem to refresh their caches every 10-15 minutes.

Not very familiar with ASA and NAT'ing in general so hopefully, this will make sense.
I've created a Site-to-Site IPSec VPN tunnel with one of our clients (who uses a PIX). The remote user can connect to our local, private LAN servers without a problem. However, when the remote user tries to connect to servers on our corporate network (which is linked over WAN routers from LA to Dallas) they cant get through.
When I run Packet Trace in ASDM on our ASA all is well until the packet attempts to traverse from the Inside interface back through the Outside interface (back to the remote client side of the VPN tunnel).
I see the following "error" within the Packet Trace tool;
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Type - NAT Subtype - rpf-check Action - DROP
Config
object network obj_any
nat (inside,outside) dynamic interface
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've attached my ASA config. The remote client-side address is 74.8.221.195, its being PAT'd to 172.30.12.75 and the remote host/network its not able to reach is 172.30.101.20 ( /24 net mask). The local segment in my LA network is 172.30.12.0/22 and the servers in this network are all able to communicate with the remote client-side user at 74.8.221.195.

On my Pix515E ASDM console I quite often see large surges in the total number of connections. I would like to find a convenient way to see what (or who) is causing this.
The command Show Local gives the answers but it returns details of each connection and I can't see a way to omit the detail. Show Conn Count just gives the total. Ideally I would like to get a summary of the number of connections (TCP/UDP) for each inside host.
On a related matter I have used........
static (inside, outside) 12.34.56.00 2.34.56.00 netmask 255.255.255.0 tcp 400 100 udp 200 ..........to limit the number of connections to a subnet. This works and I see errors in the syslog when the limit is exceeded but when I change the limits and apply the changes, the syslog errors still show the previous limit being reached. How can I make changes to these connection limits take effect (without reloading the Pix)?

I am working on an ASA 5510 on 8.4 IOS and need to know how to limit icmp to just a single host? What I would like to do is be able to PING from the Inside interface 10.X.X.X to host 4.2.2.2 on the Outside, but thats it no other host would be PINGable.I tried MANY different access-list statements but the only way I can get icmp out and working is using the "fixup protocol icmp" but then everything is PINGable and the ASA does not block anything.

Basically after upgrade from ASA 8.4 to 9.0 (2) I have problems when certain types of NAT.Example:SA 8.4: nat (LAN, outside) 85 10.252.253.123 source static 192.168.3.2 192.168.3.2 192.168.3.104 static destination service http http In this form the host 192.168.3.2 uses the mapped ip (192.168.3.104) to access by http while other ports can be accessed using the original IP (10.252.253.123).
ASA 9.0: nat (LAN, outside) 85 10.252.253.123 source static 192.168.3.2 192.168.3.2 192.168.3.104 static destination service http http In this form the host 192.168.3.2 uses the mapped ip (192.168.3.104) to access by http but unlike before now I cannot access to the original IP (10.252.253.123) using another port or ping from host 192.168.3.2.

we are observing the no. of conn thru asa 5580 is getting increased and one a fine day it will stop sending/receiving traffics.firewall# show conn count 1900000 in use, 2000008 most used As per the datasheet of this asa, the max conns permissible is 2 million (20 lacs). and the output shows that currently 1900000 connections are there and 2million+8 connections are most used.when i run " show local-host | include host|count/limit ", below are the outputs showing for max connections..
local host: <172.x.x.x>,
TCP flow count/limit = 35857/unlimited
TCP embryonic count to host = 25
UDP flow count/limit = 0/unlimited
local host: <DC01>, TCP flow count/limit = 306/unlimited TCP embryonic count to host = 8 UDP flow count/limit = 736807/unlimited
local host: <DC02>, TCP flow count/limit = 246/unlimited TCP embryonic count to host = 2 UDP flow count/limit = 582010/unlimited
local host: <172.y.y.y>, TCP flow count/limit = 1/unlimited TCP embryonic count to host = 0 UDP flow count/limit = 308412/unlimited
These are the top 4 connections, i wonder should we consider only the tcp flow count or udp as well ?

I'm working on setting up a new ASA 5550, and have run into a question that I hope is easily answered.I currently have 4 interfaces, SL100 Inside, SL80 DMZ1, SL50 DMZ2, and SL0 Outside. I was under the impression that each interface, depending on security level would pass traffic from higher levels to lower, but not allow traffic being generated from SL80 to SL100.
What I would like to accomplish is that any hosts on my SL100 Inside interface can access the "internet" which is connected to my outside interface of the ASA, which was very simple, just a permit internal subnets eq www / https / etc...
My DMZ subnets need to access a few servers on my internal interface, and need outbound access to the world as well. Thinking that all traffic from my lower SL interfaces on the ASA would be denied, I entered a permit IP / DMZ subnet ------> any. This worked great for giving my DMZ hosts access to the internet, but it also permit traffic from the DMZ to hosts on my Inside interface as well.

I've been trying to configure the threat-detection scanning-threat shun feature on my ASA5510 running 8.4(2) for some days now. From searching the support community I can see that I'm not the only one having a problem with this feature. The problem I'm having is that after configuring scanning-threat shun, no outside attacking hosts are being shunned. I'm using nmap to simulate a scanning attack. [code]
Is this the expected behavior of scanning-threat shun? If so this feature is of very little use to me as blocking my inside LAN is not my goal. I'm trying to protect my LAN from Internet attack. I can add the except command and exempt my LAN, but this still doesn't fix the problem of outside hosts not being shunned.
