Cisco :: Inexpensive Alternative For Small Mpls Sites?

Sep 10, 2012

Our company is starting to open a lot of small mpls sites across the nation. By small I mean less than 10 users, voip, 1 dc, that's it. Instead of getting the usual 2901+2960 combo, I'm interested in finding less expensive solutions. Maybe an L3 switch like a 3750? These are temporary sites so management is fine with looking into used, non smartnet covered gear?

Cisco WAN :: 6500 Client Has MPLS Connected All Sites

Apr 18, 2012

Our client has MPLS connected all sites. Each site has a router connected to MPLS via serial interface, and connected to the switch (6500) via ethernet interface. There is QoS applied on the serial interface for outbound.

It appears there are lots of inbound traffic coming to the site, and the client applied QoS on outbound. What I learned that after the packet are marked by the CPE, the ingree Provider Edge Router (PER)uses these marking to map flows to various Label Switched Paths (LSPs) providing differentiated treatment accross the network. Then at egree, the PER applies queuing policying based on the CPEs orginal DSCP markings to properly allocate bandwidth on the egrees link during congestion. My guess we really don't need to have inbound policy applied in the serial interface on the router, am I correct?

The serial interface has 1.5 MB, and the goal is we want to have 1 MB for cirtical apps, and 0.5 MB for download/upload internet access. If we apply this policy on the switch, A) should I apply it on the VLAN interface or the port connected to the router?

Cisco WAN :: 7609S - Configure Per-tunnel QoS With DMVPN For MPLS Connected Sites?

May 3, 2013

One of the customers has deployed Cisco 7609S in their infrastructure for Branch/RO connectivity. When we tried to configure per-tunnel QoS with DMVPN for MPLS connected sites, we came to know that Cat 6500 and Cisco 7600 series routers don't support this feature.

Now, we are looking for suitable replacement of Cisco 7609S. I found a document for configuring above feature on Cisco ASR 1000 series routers, but it has many restrictions always.

We are now looking for

(a) suitable platform in the league of Cisco 7609S which support above feature.

(b) suitable technology replacement of DMVPN with minimum restrictions.

Inexpensive Wireless Adapter For Windows 7

Jan 15, 2011

Any cheap wireless adapter for windows 7? Like around $20 and usb interface? I have a 2wire router that was setup by at&t (not sure if I can change it cus tv and everything goes through one box), and they threw in a 2wire wireless adapter, but it sucks. It randomly drops signal and doesn't get a very strong signal even though the router is 20 feet away. I had a cheap trendnet adapter for my xp machine but couldn't find drivers for windows 7.Also do you think the reason it drops is the adapter or possible the router? Cus I watch netflix through nintendo wii which is in the same room as the router and that never has any issues and gets great bandwidth. My laptop with an internal card never seems to have much trouble either... pretty sure I should replace the adapter.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Inexpensive 881 Switch That Can Shape?

May 15, 2013

We currently "need" to shape certain services very specifically....we curently do this via routers for CE's (881's etc) i.e. 10Mb service, we need:

-class class-default
-shape average 9800000 40000 0

Some of our clients want to run firewalls as CE's that are unable to shape to this degree, so we are wanting to put an inexpensive switch in front of their CE to do the shaping for them(L2 - either per-port or per-vlan)...the ME3400 looks ok, but is quite expensive.

Cisco Firewall :: Alternative To PBR On ASA5510

Mar 30, 2011

We have an ASA5510 with a backup ISP connection protecting our corporate network.  I also have a mail server and I would like to route SMTP traffic over the backup network.  I realize that the ASA5510 does not support PBR, but I also know that I can use static NAT rules as a workaround to direct specific types of traffic over a particular interface (e.g. "static (outside, inside) tcp 0.0.0.0 www 0.0.0.0 www netmask 0.0.0.0" and "static (backup, inside) tcp 0.0.0.0 smtp 0.0.0.0 smtp netmask 0.0.0.0"). is it possible to use something similar to force a particular host to use a specific interface? I have tried to make this work on my own without success.  Is it even possible?

Cisco WAN :: Lacp Alternative For Port Channel On 12000 Series Router?

Jan 23, 2012

I found the following on the link bundling page for the 12000 series router:"In both EtherChannel and POS channel link bundles, the Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) for signalling and the 802.3ad protocol for automatic negotiation of the channel are not supported. This means that in order for the channel between two routers to be active, you must disable signaling on switches (such as the Cisco 6500/7600 Series) in the channel, and configure the switches in ON mode."

So, my question is, if lacp isn't supported, is there another way to mimic its functionality on a 12000 series router?  I want to connect 2 routers together with a port channel that will pass through our layer 2 network, and I want to make sure that any failures in the path will shut down the affected link on both routers.

Cisco WAN :: MPLS MTU 6500 With SUP 720

Jan 14, 2013

Just like to ask first your inputs about the MTUs needed on our proposed setup. We currently have a large internal network composed of several metro ethernet links. We have different carriers and we all know that they do not always provide L1 connectivity. They sometimes do Q-in-Q or EoMPLS or other technologies that would hide their internal network and appear as a point-to-point ME circuit to customers.

We are planning to create our own MPLS network for our clients so we don't have to leak their networks inside ours and we are trying to avoid the overhead of GRE/IPSEC since we'll be adding a lot of client networks and the overhead is not reasonable. So we just thought of MPLS-VPN to at least reduce the overhead and we don't have to purchase a lot of network devices.

With that said, what is the safest thing to ask the carriers and what settings should i put in our network devices. I am still confused with the differences of MTU, IP MTU, and MPLS MTU.

We also have one circuit running 802.1q instead of using routed-port on the switch. Is 802.1q supported in LDP?

Our internal network is comprised of 6500 switches with Sup720 and Gigabit linecards and we are planning to use 3900 routers as PEs. We all hooked up our ME circuits across the 6500 switches.

router(config)# interface gi1/48
router(config-if)#mpls ip
