Cisco Switches :: QoS On Trunk Ports ESW 500 And SF 300
Mar 27, 2012
How does the ESW 500 or SF300 line guarantee QoS of voice traffic when trunking switch to switch? I have (2) ESW 500 series switches in series. The phone on switch 1 have no audio issues, but the phones on switch 2 (the last in the series) have intermittent voice quality issues when dialing across a WAN circuit to another office. The phone on switch 1 do not have that issue though they traverse the same circuit. They are all using the same VLAN 100.

I have a Cisco SG300 switch on which trunks are configured. I have a server which sits on the switch via a trunk link of four network cables (4 Gbps total)on which LACP is enabled. I'm having trouble connecting to the server using VNC from a computer on the network. It doesn't happen all the time though, it's just random.
On looking at the logs of the switch, I saw something unusual. The trunk that connects the switch to the server is constantly removing all the member ports and adding them back again after a few minutes interval. That causes the trunk link to flip on and off all the time. What could be the reason that's causing it to happen? I know it could be the network cable but I'm using brand new cables and the server also is brand new.

Is there really any reason why you wouldn't use spanning-tree portfast on a trunk port other than a trunk between two switches? We have it enabled on all ports except for the fiber trunk between two non-stacked switches and the trunk ports connected to our Astaro firewall.I'd like to enable it on the ports to the firewall unless that would cause issues.

I have a test switch (Cisco 3550) that I want to set up with 6 Vlans and 2 trunk ports. I want to be able to access a virtual server conected to the trunk ports from the switch ports. Ports Fa0/1 to 8 are in a vlan port fa0/9 to 16 another vlan etc. Ports Fa0/47 and 48 are the trunk ports. This is a lab environment so the the switch is the only device being used.

I've previously used trunkports and vlans between my ASA and accesspoints, connected directly. Now I want to put a 2960S-24PS-L bewteen. Where should i define the vlans (in the switch or in th ASA?) and what ports to put in trunk mode? (the ones on the switch or the one between the switch and the ASA?)

I have trunk etherchannel ports 47,48 which both have Vlans allowed on trunk 70,71. Everything works pretty fine. Now I am trying to add a new VLAN 72 to these ports.
conf t
interface FastEthernet0/47
switchport trunk allowed vlan add 72
exit
exit
So far so good. But when making the same command for port FastEthernet0/48 my switch stuck.

We have around a dozen Catalyst 3560 and 2960 switches in a ring topology. We are considering adding storm control to our trunk ports. Up until now we have only used it on edge ports with default values and without error-disable.I am proposing that we also add storm control to trunk ports at a lower level and that we error-disable only the redundant links that make up our loops.
-storm-control broadcast level 25.00 20.00
-storm-control multicast level 2.00 1.00
-storm-control action shutdown [only on redundant links]
In a storm all links will restrict broadcast which should work accessing remote switches, but the redundant links should errdisable and block the redundant path. It is important that the action line is not applied to links that are not redundant as we could isolate parts of the network. Any reason not to use storm control on trunks?

I have been experiencing discards and no buffers errors on my 2950 switches. These switches are connected to two core switches 4948 and 3560G. I have noticed previous posts regrading these problems but have been unable to find any cases that were resolved. We are using 12.1(22)EA11 software on our 2950 switches.

I have a switched network of C2980 & C3548 switches with multiple VLANs. I would like to understand the difference between Multi- VLAN ports and trunk ports. What circumstances would dictate using one over the other? If I configure the router port as Multi- VLAN, does the router still require sub-interfaces?

I'm working with an established Network, which has 2 Allied Telesis Switches (1)&(2).I must add another Allied Telesis (3), and a Cisco Switch. If I connect just the Cisco Switch, and the AT(3), it works ok. I mean it trunks. It also works ok if I connect the AT(3) with AT (1) and AT (2). But if I want to connect the Cisco SW with AT(1) and AT(2), or AT(1), AT(2) and AT(3) It doesn´t trunk. Even if I set the Cisco Switch port I use, as a trunk port.I think I have a problem with the vlans already created on AT1 and AT2. But the problem is that I cannot access to the AT console mode.

Our company currently have a 3com 2816 connected to a 3com 4800G through a trunk. The 4800G connects to the PBX and to the ip phones/computers. We are currently using vlan1 (192.168.100.n) for data and vlan 3 (192.168.101.n) for voice , Ip addresses are being issued by a DHCP server. Each user has an assigned IP phone and it has an ethernet port that connects to each computer. This setup has been working properly until I purchased an SG300 and replaced the 3com 2816.
The ip phone is showing a bad gateway and the PC are getting an ip address of 192.168.101 (which is for voice). Theoretically it should work, but what is weird is, it seems the SG300 trunking with the 3com 4800G is not working. Is it possible that it is on ISL mode rather than dot1q?I also saw its running RSTP, should I changed it to classic STP?How do I fix this or what troubleshooting should i do?
The SG300 is configured as a layer 2 switch. Configuration for the trunk below:
interface gigabitethernet27
spanning-tree link-type point-to-point
switchport trunk allowed vlan add 3-4
macro description switch
macro auto smartport type switch $native_vlan 1

I've noticed that a couple of switches are complaining about duplex mismatches on trunk interfaces. When I took a closer look, two switches (switches 1 & 3) are reporting that they have a duplex mismatch to a device connected to a downstream switch (switch 2). Basic topology is switch 2 has a 1G fiber link to both switch 1 & 3.

I have client who has two distant offices with 3750 L3 as core (do all vlan routing for local office) and multiple L2 access switches with multiple VLAN’s connected to it. First 3750 is hub also connected to internet, second 3750 is spoke and acting as a router on stick. We have eigrp configured on both side ISP provided client 100Mbps link as a trunk with two vlan; vlan10 for voice and vlan20 for data. We assigned two small subnets to these vlans 10.15.17.0/29 and 10.15.17.9/29. Hub addresses are 10.15.17.1 and 10.15.17.9 respectively. How to force voice over VLAN10 and data via vlan20, but still do some load balancing? How to setup default route on second (router on stick) switch?

I've been having a debate with a colleague about QOS COS values. My colleague says I need to use COS values across layer 2 trunk links between access layer switches and core switches. My argument is if phones are marking packets with DSCP values I don't need to be concerned with Cos.The reason I ask is we're implementing a new phone system, the ip phones will mark RTP traffic wih dscp value EF and Call signaling with DSCP value of CS3. If my understanding is correct I can trust the dscp values of the phones. We are using Cisco 4507 switches which I believe automatically trust dscp values so I would just need a class-map to match the dscp values and apply the output policy map on the egress interfaces as follows? I have couple of Linksys SRW 224G4 and SRW 2024 connected together with Cisco C3650 switches. For my part of network VLAN100 is used as administrative vlan and VLAN1 as defult (on trunks or unused ports).Altrough most of switches work fine, on all older models of SRW224G4 (hw 1.0, various firmware versions) there is no connectivity to management utilities (also ping won't work) via trunk (where of course VLAN100 is present). At the same time there is no problem with access from "local" ports (assigned to VLAN100) and there are no problems with traffic on VLAN 100 along the network.
For example:Two computers (A and B), two switches (sw1 - old SRW224G4 and sw2 - Cisco switch), are connected as follow:
A--VLAN100--sw1--TRUNK--sw2--VLAN100--B
Swicthes have VLAN100 as management VLAN, computers are connected to access ports (untagged).A has access to management on sw1 and sw2 and connectivity with B?B has access to management on sw2 and connectivity with B but has no access to management on sw1...If sw1 and sw2 are same, old SRW224G4 - everything works fine.Newer versions of SRW224G4, SRW2024 and SLM2024 works OK.Why it doesn't work?

We have 7 3560's in 7 different locations connected to our providor for wan access. Our provider has given us a copper cable at each point and we have connected it directly to our 3560 switch at each location. Each port is configured the same way at each location. Each switch is running eigrp. All of the switch ports on each switch are configured as a trunk and vlan 299 had the ip address for the eigrp connection: [code] This setup is working as each switch see's all of the other switches as an eigrp neighbor. We have also made sure that the switch at our head office has spanning tree priority for vlan 299.
So the problem is, if there is a change in the topology at one of the locations it usually causes one or more of the other connections to go down for some reason. We just cannot pinpoint what is causing this change. There are no log's or anything other than an eigrp hold time expired message.?

I have a 3750 as a core and have a series of HP Procurve switches that are daisy chained using one port. I have two vlans on the port now (6 &9) and everything works fine, all switches communicate and end devices on the switches are also talking. There is a requirement to add a device towards the end of the chain which requires it to connect using Vlan1. Once I add Vlan1 to the port onthe 3750 I lose connectivity to all the HP switches.

I faced with a strange behavior of ME3600.For testing purposes I linked Cat3550 and ME3600 switches via trunk mode. All interfaces are in Up state. But I couldn't ping SVI200 of Cat switch from ME3600 and vice versa. [cde]
This scheme perfectly works with another L3 swithes. For example Catalist3750. I know that ME doesn't support VTP, DTP and so on. Also, I've tried latest software.

2. Is it possible to use for stacking ports other than 24, 48?
3. What is maximum possible number of ports to use for stacking (can I get more than 1Gb thruput).

I am looking into the possibility of using private vlan's for some dmz implementations however I do have what may be some very rudimentary questions. It seems straightforward how to configure the primary/secondary vlan configuration as well as associating them. However in my case I would be looking to configure the PVLAN on a 6500-vss platform acting as the router while all of the hosts which I would desire to have in the isolated vlan would be spread out across a number of older Cisco switches which only support "protected port" setup or Procurve switches all of which I do not have budget to replace with something newer. So in my scenario I would have a 6500 connected by trunk to multiple switches which only support a protected port setup such as a Procurve (top of rack) or a Cisco 2950. As the Procurve or 2950 would not support Private VLAN setup, do I then just configure the secondary vlan to be allowed across the trunk from the 6500, configure that vlan on the Procurve or 2950 (as vtp will not foward the info for the secondary vlan) and assign that vlan to the host port as well as setting it as a protected port and this will communicate just fine across the trunk to the router as well as stopping the protected port in top of rack switch 1 from being able to communicate to a protected port in top of rack 2,3,etc? If the above scenario is what needs to be done, do I just use a regular trunk or do I have to use a PVLAN trunk?

I just recently purchased an SG300 10 port switch. After reading through many of the threads here, I was finally able to get the different VLANs to route properly. However, I'm having a unique issue that I'm not sure if it's related to the switch or not. I currently have 2 VLANs configured on the switch.ports 1-4 are native vlan 1 (192.168.1.X) ports 5-7 are VLAN 10 192.168.10.X (Trunk Port with VLAN 1 tagged and VLAN 10 untagged)I have a Hyper-V server connected to both of these networks. The VMs are running on both VLANs on port 5. I have the following problem:When I have a domain controller VM on VLAN 10, I notice that many of the DC communications failed. I took a network trace and noticed that many of the RPC port ranges were failing. I am able to ping all of the hosts on VLAN1 and vice versa. My question is as follows:Does this switch have some type of security option that blocks high range ports? I can't seem to find the menu option indicating that this is the case. I have already set-up a NETBIOS UDP proxy, but this hasn't worked much. I still have problems connecting to machines on this VLAN range.
