Cisco VPN :: ASA 5505 VPN Remote Desktop Connection Slow
May 23, 2011
I have a question on a VPN connection. I have a remote access VPN setup on an ASA 5505 to be able to remote into a location and check the HVAC program running on a PC. The remote connection connects fine, but when I use remote desktop to connect to the PC, it connects quick, but the screen redraw and reaction time is extremely slow. EG: I click on the program and it takes about 20 seconds to draw the screen, or I click on a menu bar and get the same times for reactions. Could this be a ISP Up/Download issue or is there something that I need to look at on the ASA to change?
If I connect to the remote and do a PING from my desktop to the remote Desktop, these are the results that I get:
Reply from 192.168.XX.XX: bytes=32 time=96ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.XX.XX: bytes=32 time=132ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.XX.XX: bytes=32 time=90ms TTL=128

Currently, my work computer has (obviously) a local desktop. Also, we use a Remote Desktop for our shared network drive (our head office is on the other side of the country). The annoying thing is that if I am looking up a document on the share drive (Remote Desktop) and I want to work on it, the Remote Desktop applications are slow. So I'd rather work on it on my local desktop. However, I have to email it to myself, exit the Remote Desktop, retrieve it from my mail (in local desktop) and then save it

I have an ASA 5505 and have a problem where when I connect through VPN I can RDP into a server using its internal address but I cannot RDP to another server using its internal address. The one I can connect to has an IP of 192.168.2.10 and the one I cannot connect to has an IP of 192.168.2.11 on port 3390.Both rules are configured exactly the same except for the IP addresses and I cannot see why I cannot connect to this one server.I am also able to connect to my camera system with an IP 192.168.2.25 on port 37777 and able to ping any other device on the internal network.I've also tried pinging it and telneting to port 3390 with no success.
Here is the config.
ASA Version 8.4(4)1

interface Ethernet0/0
switchport access vlan 3

unable to remote desktop into any of the LAN PCs when I'm connected through the VPN. I can ping all nodes inside the network and I can open an inside addressed web page from my local PC, as well. So, it seems like it's only RDP (3389) that is affected. Remote access to those PCs are enabled, as I'm able to get to them via a different method (SBS Remote Web Access).

After getting hacked I want to limit terminal server/ remote desktop to only my computer. (although I may need to let other net in later)
In other words I want only computers from my home ip range (lets say my ISP gives me at home something in 28.28.XX.0) to be let in to the router at work and then to port 3389.
In the work ASA 5505 softwareVersion 7.2(4) I now have:
access-list outside_in extended permit tcp any interface outside eq 3389
static (inside, outside) tcp interface 3389 192.168.1.2 3389 netmask 255.255.255.255
acces-group outside_in in interface outside

I opened a computer in other network via remote desktop(because I forwarded port in router)....and tried to access other computers in the network via remote desktop again from that computer but after I done, I don't know how to close the secondary remote desktop. There was one close button on the top, but if "close" it, whole rdp connection was closed. The secondary rdp connection is still open in the computer.

I am having trouble connecting to my home computer from my work computer via the Windows Remote Desktop Connection app.On my home computer (win 7 pro) I have:
1. Allowed incoming remote desktop connections
2. Verified that the firewall is open for RDC
3. Forwarded port 3389 on my router to my devices static IP
4.Verified that I am using the correct IP (Router has a dynamic IP but I called home and had my wife read the current IP # from whatismyip.com)
5. Setup an account on the home computer that is password protected
I am connecting from a win XP pro computer.I receive 0% packet loss with reasonable time delay when pinging my home IP from the work computer.I also asked a family member to try from a different location (using Vista Ultimate) with the same result Error is that connection is never established and I am never prompted to logon to the home computer.I can connect via RDC when on the home network.

I have a problem connecting to VPS with Windows XP Remote Desktop Connection. The error I'm getting is:"Remote Desktop Disconnected - The remote connection has timed out. Please try connecting to the remote computer again."I am not behind any network, firewall, router...I tried to turn off firewall and antivirus programs to see if they are blocking it. It didn't work.I could find from Microsoft support site refer to the server side configuration. But I know problem isn't with server, because I am able to connect from another PC (notebook running windows 7 with wireless connection). It is working straightforward with default settings. Are there any settings that need to be changed in Windows XP for RDC to work?

Both her laptop and her desktop have working sound; however, when connected to her desktop through her laptop, no sound can be heard. It says there there are no audio devices detected. Obviously the drivers are installed on the desktop.

I have ASA 5515x and it has already Internet Connection since my firewall is not "production". So right now I'm trying to configure a Remote Session just for a test and eventually I was not able to connect from it. I followed the instructions from technotes but still Remote Connection dropped. Here's my sample configuration on my firewall, btw I also configured a service policy rule and ACL just to make sure if I can able to access the Server inside my network but Session also dropped.
nat (inside,outside) source static 1.1.1.1 2.2.2.1
access-list 110 extended permit tcp host 3.3.3.1 host 2.2.2.1 eq 3389
CiscoASA(config)#class-map rdpmss

I've just had a custom computer built and I seem to have a problem with my wireless internet connection. I have a Realtek 8185 extensible 802.11b/g wireless adapter. My computer recognizes my house's network and is connected to the internet with a good connection, but when I open up my web browser it takes a very long time for the page to load and sometimes never does. The laptop I'm on right now is connected to the same internet and it is running just fine. I've uninstalled the device and rebooted to have the driver reinstalled but the problem still occurs.

I want to connect via windows rdp to computer outside the company office and I cannot do that since we have webwasher or proxy installed in the office.I can access this machine with IE (it is a server with open port 80) and I see its website. This is becuase the IE at office has proxy configured correctly.I cannot access the same machine with RDP connection, though. I can access it using other computer outsite the office, so it is not an issue that rdp is not enabled or so. Problem is with proxy at office.I need a way to connect to rdp by using the same proxy.Problem is that that IE at office uses automated proxy script (.pac).I have installed remote utilities server on the machine I want to access and the remote utilities viewer on the computer at office. I set the proxy similary to what is set in IE but I cannot connect anyway. I can connect this way from third computer outside the office though, so the configuration is fine, only proxy is the problem.I managed to get the proxy details like host name and port but I'm not sure those are the right one.The webwasher or proxy is mcafee web gateway 6.8.4.

I have one desktop PC at home, Windows XP, and have a Time Warner wired modem for internet. I work from home and connect to my office computer through Remote Desktop Connection.I purchased a Roku2 video streaming player and bought a Belkin N150 wireless router in order to get the signal from my desktop computer out to the living area where the Roku is located. The connection with the Roku is perfect. However, my remote desktop connection now disconnects constantly and internet browsing on the local computer is very slow and choppy. The configuration I used is 1) Belkin ethernet wire from Belkin to back of modem 2) modem ethernet wire from Belkin to computer. If I remove the Belkin and put everything back the way it was, all is fine ... but, of course, we then have no Roku.
