I have a base config of AnyConnect VPN below, however the ASA 8.3.1 code has deprecated some commands and the VPN/NAT/FW rule syntax is quite different. Can som point out what's missing from the pertinent config below that prevents the VPN Pool from accessing the internal LAN?

Cisco VPN :: ASA 5515 / VPN Users Cannot Communicate With The Internal Network

Aug 12, 2012

I have two ASA 5515 configured in failover (active / standby).I used the ASDM wizard to create connections through ipsec cisco client.Currently users are able to connect but can not do a ping to anywhere inside the network.

The ping request is received from the internal client but the internal client can not communicate with the remote user. The ping fail also directly from the ASA.

When the remote client is connected an entry is added to the routing table:

S 192.168.10.130 255 255 255 255 [1/0] via <ip of the ISP>, "WAN"

as if that IP was reachable directly from the Internet.I tried changing the settings of the NAT but in no way I can make them communicate. The ultimate goal would be to create different users with different access permissions to the LAN and the other subnets in the company.

Cisco VPN :: 2811 - Static NAT Causes Unable To Access Server Via Internal IP

Nov 22, 2011

I running site-to-site IPsec VPN in Cisco 2811 IOS 12.4 both site. Here I encounter a problem to access server on  Site A from Site B

Site A having Leased Line connected to router with Public IP. I have done static mapping 1 web server to Public IP (NAT). This to allow external users to access the server via Public IP. At the same time, users at Site B would need to access to same server via Internal IP since they have Site-to-Site VPN established. But once I done Static Mapping (NAT), user at Site B unable to access the server at Site A using its internal IP. But external user can access server via Public IP. What went wrong here. Do i need to add extra command to get this done?

Cisco VPN :: ASA 5510 - AnyConnect Users Unable To Access Remote Subnet

Jun 9, 2013

I have a weird problem which I have already submitted a TAC ticket about. When users authenticate through AnyConnect into our HQ ASA 5510 they grab an address from 172.16.254.x. What we have been noticing intermittently is that when logged into our network through the client they are unable to access their resources at one of our remote offices which is connected over l2l to the HQ ASA. This problem just started randomly a week ago and we have been working with Cisco trying to create a solution.

My quick fix is logging into a device at the remote office which is trying to be accessed and pinging the gateway of the virtual subnet for AnyConnect users. When I ping 172.16.254.1 it goes through after a few dropped icmp packets and then the issue is resolved for about 8 hours or so.

Cisco Firewall :: 5505 - Users Unable To Access External Email Servers ASA?

Nov 28, 2011

I have a issue that i am at a loss as how to solve it. I have an ASA 5505 as my firewall. I have users from other companies who visit from time to time and are unable to use their outlook email to send messages. They can however receive messages without a problem. I also have a situation where users who use windows live to access gmail are unable to send messages.

I have narrowed it down to the fact that these uses are using  ssl/tls to send the mails. I did some research and found out about the inspect esmtp setting in the ASA.  I have disabled it and i still have to problem. I have also removed all outbound deny statements and still no luck.

Of note is that i can send emails without attachments. They take a long time to go out ( from minutes to hours) but eventually they do. Emails with attachments of even 10k do not go at all.

I was running image 8.2.3 and i downgraded to 8.0.5...still did not work...i upgraded to 8.4.3...still did not work. I am now back at 8.2.3.

My Firewall config is attached. I am at my wits end as to what else to try. The company has not renewed support for the device so i am on my own here!

Cisco Routers :: RV220W PPTP Users Unable To Access Subnet Across Tunnel

Apr 21, 2012

I have two offices connected with an IPSEC VPN tunnel using RV220W routers.  The Tunnel works fine for local users between the two sites(Site 1:10.0.0.x; site 2 is 10.0.2.x).  I have also set up PPTP users for remote access.  PPTP users that connect to site 1 cannot access site 2 and vice versa.   The PPTP users have no trouble accessing the resources on the site that they connect to.  I have tried activating RIP and adding various static routes with no success.  If I PPTP connect to site 1 and I tracert to an IP address on site 2 the route goes to the site 1 router and then goes to the internet(connected to the site 1 router) where it stops.

Cisco :: WLC 5508 - Keeping Internal Users Off Guest Wireless

Mar 22, 2010

Have a WLC 5508 running 6.x code with LAP's providing wireless for our internal laptops (WPA2 and EAP-TLS). I want to provide guest wireless which goes out a different port on the WLC to a guest firewall/cable modem. However, we want to prevent our internal laptops from being able to use the guest wireless. I have RADIUS (IAS) and LDAP for my AD available. We would prefer not to have use Lobby Ambassador and just have the guests use a simple password or web passthru. Guests may be laptops or smartphones. What options are available? I have tried a test setup using dynamic vlan assignments from RADIUS using the IETF flags, but can't seem to get it to work. Is there a way to identify the SSID is being used at the RADIUS server?

Cisco Firewall :: Users Behind ASA5505 Firewall Are Unable To Access Internet

Feb 24, 2011

I have a normal setup of ASA5505 (without security license) connected behind an internet router. From the ASA5505 console I can ping the Internet. However, users behind the Firewall on the internal LAN, cannot ping the Internet even though NATing is configured. The users can ping the Inside interface of the Firewall so there is no internal reachability problem. In addition, I noticed that the NAT inside access list is not having any hit counts at all when users are trying to reach the internet.

When i replace the ASA5505 with a router with NAT overload configuration on it, the setup works normally and users are able to browse the internet.

The ASA5505 configuration is shown below.

hostname Firewall

Cisco VPN :: Remote VPN With ASA 5520 - Can't Access Internal Network

Mar 14, 2011

I am trying to build a remote vpn in ASA 5520 Software Version 8.3(1). I am using ASDM 6.3(1) for the configuration. I went through the SSL VPN wizard and did the configuration. I tried connecting to the ASA using anyconnect VPN and I could successfully connect the VPN. My home laptop takes an IP 192.168.60.21 (which I have defined in the wizard). Now my issue is, I can't access any office internal network from this laptop (none of the internal IP is ping ing even). Meanwhile, I could ping and rdp to this laptop(which is connectd by anyconnect VPN) from my office network. One thing I noticed is that when I give a traceroute to an internal IP from the laptop, the first hop goes to my home ISP router.

Cisco VPN :: 5505 - Logged In VPN Can't Access DMZ From Internal Network

Apr 9, 2012

What I got is a 5505 ASA firewall and I'm connected to it via VPN.  I'm pulling an 192.168.169.x address because that's what we set their company's internet LAN to.  Which is what we want.  What I can't do while I'm VPN'd in is ping from the internet network to the DMZ, and the same when I try and ping from the DMZ to the internal network.

The DMZ is on a 196.0.0.x network. The internet network is 192.168.169.x network.

I don't need them to have internet access on the DMZ I just want to be able to access it from the internal network.  What is going on is we need them to be able to VPN into the DMZ and access their equipment.  At this point it would just make me happy to be able to ping from the internal network to the DMZ and I can figure it out from there I've setup rules and applied them and when I wasn't having success I referred back to defaults.  Right now the rules are set at default, any thing in and anything out, on both internal and DMZ.  I'm using a VPN client and going through Cisco ASDM Launcher to setup the rules and static routes, I haven't done anything with the command line.  All the research I've done everyone does it command line, I find it easier to do it GUI.  This is my first time working with an ASA firewall.

Cisco :: ASA 5520 - Don't Allow Guest Traffic Access Internal Network

Feb 28, 2013

I have created a new sub-interface on our ASA 5520 for guest internet access.

My goal is to allow access to a few specific services hanging off some dmz interfaces on the same firewall and full unrestricted access to the internet only. Everything else should be out of bounds.

The order of the rules I plan to setup on the guest interface inbound are:

#1. <rules to allow access to specific services in the dmz>

#2. <block any ip access to the entire private network ip address space>

#3. <permit ip any any>

#1. These rules will give access to the guest user to services located in the dmz

#2. This rule will block all access to any services in the private ip address space (thus blocking access to all internal services)

#3. This rule is to allow access to any other services i.e. the internet.

Is this the best way to achieve my goal in the most secure way or is there a better way? i.e. is there a way to force the traffic by default to only go out the outside interface unless there is a specific rule allowing it go elsewhere?

(Of course Dynamic PAT will also be configured for traffic coming from the guest interface to the outside interface.)

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5510 - Guest Network Access To Internal Webserver

Dec 18, 2012

I have the syntax correct and thought process down right on a solution to allowing guest wireless users access to an internal webserver.  (DMZ discussion aside)

We have an ASA5510 with interfaces setup as:
outside - 65.x.x.x address
inside - 172.20.1.2
guest_inet - 10.2.1.1

Internally clients resolve our website to 192.168.40.40 and that part works as it should.  Clients outside of our network resolve our website to the correct external address (lets just call it 1.1.1.1). We have a NAT statement static (inside, outside) 1.1.1.1 192.168.40.40 netmask 255.255.255.255 and an ACL to permit tcp any host 1.1.1.1 eq www

Clients on our guest_int use an external DNS server and hence resolve our website to 1.1.1.1.  However it seems traffic goes out and back in our outside interface and this connection never occurs.

What I'm wondering is the correct NAT statement / ACL to add that would allow our internal clients on the 10.2.1.x network to access our internal website.  Would that be: static (inside,guest_inet) 1.1.1.1 192.168.40.40 netmask 255.255.255.255 ?  Since there is already an ACL permitting port 80 traffic to 1.1.1.1 we should be taken care of on the ACL side of things, right?

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5520 - Allowing Guest Wireless Network Access To Internal Subnets

Jan 23, 2012

We have a Cisco wireless infrastructure in place that includes a guest network with its own subnet that is a sub interface of the inside interface on our ASA 5520.  There are no routes for it to be allowed access to the internal subnets.  So it can only access the internet.  This is primarily used by the public, but we have several non employee personnel that we only want to give internet access and force them to access the internal network through our clientless SSL vpn portal or through other internet facing internal resources such as webmail.I have done packet traces from within the ASA and the break appears to be there is no ACL allowing the traffic back into the network once the web resource replies to the request and the traffic is attempting to come back into the network from the web resource.  Is that as clear as mud?

I know that this has to be a common problem and a way around this is to allow the guest wireless network access to the internal network but only for the select resources that they require.  And that this can be done seemlessly by network specific routes and or alternate DNS entries, but I would like to keep this simple and just allow them to access the web resource, webmail and VPN, from the guest wireless using internet DNS servers without route trickery.

Cisco :: WLC And 1131 AP's - Users Unable To Connect

Jan 21, 2011

I've ran into an issue that I haven't seen before.  A client of mine has a WLC that manages AP's at several different sites on the East Coast.  They are all connected via a multilinked T1x2 connection.  One site in particular contains 7 AP's, and users at this site are unable to connect.  The remaining sites have no issue at all connecting.  I noticed that when users began reporting this that all AP's had failed interference profiles.  Also, when I instruct a user to attempt a connection, I don't ever see their mac address come across a debug session on the controller, which I find odd.  Is it possible that a neighboring business is sending deauth packets and containing my AP's?

The client is running code version 4.2.61.0.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: (10.10.50.0 / 24) - After Applying ACL / Unable To Hit Internal Web Server

Apr 7, 2013

This isn't a big deal as the rest of the ACL works fine, but this is an annoynace since the web auth redirects to our company website (internal for now) after successful login. We have a Cisco WLC that provides access to our production and guest wireless environments.  The guest environment of course is in a separate vlan (10.10.50.0/24).  So I created this ACL:

access-list 107 permit udp any host 10.10.2.13 eq bootpc <----internal DHCP server
access-list 107 permit udp any host 10.10.2.13 eq bootps
access-list 107 deny ip any 10.10.0.0 0.0.255.255 <---all internal networks
access-list 107 deny ip any 172.28.16.0 0.0.0.255 <----DR Network
access-list 107 permit ip any any
int vlan 50
Desc "Guest wireless network"
ip access-group 107 in

This ACL basically gives the wireless guests access to an internal DHCP server and full access to the internet.  For the 10.10.50.0/24 scope, the DHCP server assigns Internet DNS servers and my rationale is that wireless clients would access it via the external IP address but I suppose it doesn't work quite like that with the website being behind the same router as the client machines.
