D-Link DIR-600 :: Only Getting Half Of Connection Speed

Mar 23, 2013

I have been using a D-Link DIR-600 for a couple of years now. And I haven't had any problems until maybe a couple of months ago. It all started with my internet just kind of dying (mostly in the eavnings) and not working until i rebooted the router. So I call my internet provider and they tell me to update firmware and to plug the internet straight into my computer instead to rule out everything at their end. After some time I manage to update firmware. Problem with internet sill remain but is not as frequent. I left it like that for a couple of weeks, but earlier this week i checked my connection speed and it says i have only 50mb/s after the firmware update. Since i had the weekend off I plugged the internet straight into my computer and get my full internet speed at about 90mb/s. After plugging in the router again I only get around 50 again.

D-Link DIR-655 :: Half Speed After 5 Minutes?

Mar 7, 2012

Router Starts at full speed 300/270/243, jumps around a bit.  Then around 5 minutes speed is cut in half 130 Mbps. I tested it out for 2 hours rebooting it, and in almost exactly 5 minutes the speed is cut in half every time. Is my router bad? Or is the good neighbor policy just going into effect? I do have a lot of traffic, I am in a apartment, but I use a free channel

Wireless Connection Speed Reduced By Half?

Aug 3, 2012

I noticed my wireless connection was decently fast for my needs which was 13-15 up /5 down. I am in the next room from my study and around <10 ft away from the modem in the study. However today the internet was extremely slow for everyone in the house so I went to reset the modem. After resetting the modem I noticed that the internet speed went a bit up and so I used speedtest.net to see how fast the connection was in the study. The computer in the study is connected with a ethernet cable to the modem. I was amazed that the speed in the study was nearly double the amount. I understand that wireless connections are undoubtedly slower than a wired connection, but is it normal for the speed to drop by half when I am <10 ft away from the modem?

Internet Speed Has Dropped By More Than Half

Sep 18, 2012

A few days ago I sent my ISP an email and a few days later they called my house and talked to my mom about the support issues I had addressed with slow speeds. They directed her to www.att.com/speedtest and our internet speed was reading 6MB/s down and 512kb/upload as it should be.The problem is, outside that test I am not seeing the performance. Let me put it to you like this, right now the internet is so slow that Speedtest.net consistently gets errors when trying to connect for a test. Any website that isnt text based like say Reddit, takes ages to load. Youtube videos? Streams? Forget about those, 240p buffers as slow as 720p.When I finally manage to get Speedtest.net to do a test after numerous internet resets I barely crack 1MB/s down IF AT ALL, and .12kb/s upload IF AT ALL.

Its maddening. Its actually affecting my siblings college work as their online tests have been failed due to disconnecting.Something I should have mentioned earlier is that I do have a router. Its a Linksys WRT54GS with the latest firmware. Something that is also annoying is that when I plug my internet directly into my computer, it wont work, but if its plugged through the router it works just fine. This has never happened and its making me draw a blank.AT&T support suggested the we upgrade our Modem to one of the newer ones that are a modem/wireless router combo which we plan on doing. Right now we have a Speed stream 4100 that weve had since we got the internet in 2006 and I guess they don't even make them anymore.

Do Repeaters / Bridges Cut Wifi Speed In Half

Jul 20, 2011

I have an old metal-walled mobile home that I plan on converting to a combination shop and man-cave; it's about 200 feet from my home's computer room, where I have a Netgear WNDR3400 wireless-n router. The only place in the trailer where I can "see" my home network is the kitchen window, and I thought about putting a Wi-Fi repeater there to extend the home network into the trailer. But I have read that using a repeater will cut the network's Wi-Fi throughput in half -- which would not please my wife and daughters back at the house. Is there a simple, relatively inexpensive way to extend the network to the trailer without slowing everything down? Eventually I may have Charter install a separate cable hookup there, which would allow a separate high-speed Internet connection too. For now, I just want to "share" Wi-Fi to the trailer.

Cisco :: ASA 5510 Getting Half Upload Speed To Isp?

Feb 15, 2011

Just got a new 10M circuit installed a few days ago and noticed that when doing bandwidth tests I am getting 9.85 down but only 4.5 up. I plugged directly into the isp's adtran with my laptop and I can hit 10/10 consistently. Not sure what's causing the ASA to get half upload speed. I set the interface speed and duplex to 100/full so I set it back to auto/auto. Thoughts? See config below. We aren't doing any QoS on it.

AR680W Router Slows Download Speed To Half?

Jan 16, 2012

I am on a point to point internet connection that is rated at 2mbps. With my PC connected directly to the modem or through an old Airlink101 (model AR680W) router typical DL speeds are 1.9 to 2.4 mbps. However the Airlink router has to be reset 2 to 3 times per day.

I am trying to replace this router, however every router I've tried cuts the download speed in half (about 0.9 to 1.3 mbps). So far I've tried two Ultra Speed wireless N routers; two D-Link DIR 615's; and one Linksys E1200. When I talk to their tech support after testing they say that the routers must be faulty, but what are the odds of getting 5 bad routers from 3 different manufactures.

My IP does not know of any compatability issues with any routers.

Download Speed Is Half Of What Paid For Wireless / All Other Computers Fine?

Oct 10, 2011

In the household we have 3 computers. 1 computer upstairs is the main computer with the router. My computer and the girlfriends is downstairs on wireless. We are currently paying for a 7.5 Mbps download speed. The computer upstairs and my girlfriends computer which is 10 feet away, get speeds between 7.5 Mbps and 10 during boost. My computer during a speed test will spike to 7.5 Mbps and remain anywhere from 2 Mbps to 3.5, roughly have of what they have. I have tested both wireless devices on my computer and my girlfriends, no improvement. She is running a device plugged via usb, I'm running a wireless card. Tried her usb, no success. Went into Task Manager and processes looking for other programs that would eat bandwidth, no success. And played around for a little bit with the channel settings on my card. It is Asus 802.11n WirelessLanCard.

Running Windows 7, Kaspersky, Shaw is my ISP.

Linksys Wireless Router :: E4200 N Clients Connect At Half Speed

Sep 16, 2011

I've just set up my E4200 and none of my wireless N clients connect at full speed. Irrespective of what wireless settings I use they all seem to connect at around half speed. My laptop for example insists on connecting at 144.4 Mbps though it supports 300 Mbps. Periodically it will connect at 300Mbps, but the next time the I reconnect or I make a settings change on the router (irrespective of what the change is) the speed drops back to 144.4. Clients that support 150Mbps connect a consistent 65Mbps.I'm running FW 1.0.02, though the problem existed with 1.0.01 (I hard reset before and after upgrade) and I've tried re-flasing the 1.0.02 firmware.Any combination of channel, width, mode and security type etc doesn't seem to influence the performance. Nor does distance (the client above is 3ft from the router). My previous router was located in exactly the same place as the E4200 and I had a solid full speed connection all over the house.

I've got a 2 month old e3000 with the latest firmware. (1.04 i believe) I have run speedtests from wired and wireless machines on my network. All of the wired connections show a speed of around 15Mps (which is consistent with my providers guaranteed speed) but when I test any of the wireless connections I get somewhere between 3 and 7 Mps. I get the same degradation in speed when I stand directly next to the e3000.

Other then SSID and Passphrases I have everything set to the default settings. I have rebooted multiple times with no change. The e3000 is mounted on a 2x4 with several feet of clearance all around and is also located in the coolest part of the house. I am using Speedtest.Net for all the tests.

D-Link DIR-615 :: Upload Failing By Half?

I have a DIR-615. My cable connection is 10M and my upload velocity it's about 800K.

If I plug my cable modem right through to the computer, the upload velocity it's 800k indeed.

But when I access the internet through the router plugged on the cable modem, the velocity drops down to 400K.

That is a big problem for play games like fifa. I have a huge delay on the commands and I think that it's caused for the low upload velocity.

D-Link DIR-655 :: Download Speed Fine But Upload Speed Is Way Slow?

Mar 17, 2011

I live in the tampa bay area, I have bright house (BHN) as my service provider, which provides a Road Runner Lightning (40/5) package.  I previously used BHN's top tier (20/2) back in July (and prior) with no problems.

After converting to Lightning in August of this year (2010).  Of course, BHN (and every other provider) wants to force a modem/router down your throat, so I had them bridge it (in short, turn it into a dummy modem with no routing). I had an SMC branded modem gateway at the time.  I work from home 2 days a week (so I can spend more time with my kids during morning, lunch, right after work) and this requires me to use QoS to ensure my VOIP work calls don't get dropped, if the family is watching youtube videos or watching netflex.

My network was as follows SMC Modem >WAN IP>>WAN Port>>D-link DIR-655>>Switch Ports>PC1, PC2, PC3

Everything seemed fine (from a usability stand point) till about 2 weeks ago when my upload speed seemed to grind to halt.  Normally I was able to upload about 200-300K per second, and I noticed this dropped to about 45K per second during a drop box upload.   First thing I did was power cycle both my modem and router (in the proper/usual order).  After they both come up, I start using speed test to find out what my upload speeds were.  I was getting about 39Mbps down, but only .56Mbps up still.  I factory reset my router.... test, similar speeds.  Power cycle all computers (just in case), and then modem/router.  Tested, similar speeds.   Updated the firmware to the latest. Same issue

Called BHN customer service, they factor reset it, but it wasn't in bridge mode.  If I by passed the 655, in factory mode (non bridge mode) upload speeds returned to better than expected states.  If I bridged the cable modem, upload speeds seemed to crash.

Had BHN replace the modem, seemed fixed for a day, then issue came back.  Had them come back out and replace it again, this time with a Motorolla Surfboard modem... same issue.  Fine during factory reset, however after they bridge the modem, upload speeds were fine.  Told BHN I would take it from there.. Connected up the DIR-655, and upload speeds crashed again. (.6Mbps).  Called D-Link Support, and the Chinese English speaking rep seemed to not be listening to me and tried to have me adjust my MTU as well as Wireless settings.  Long story short... the rep was a level 0 id10t and I hope D-link will consider hiring better employees/contractors.  So I was all about to give up and replace it with a DD-WRT capable router (which it takes me a lot to want to swap hardware), when I discovered the wan shaping was on.  Which I thought to myself... nah... QoS has never messed up before... why would it be the cause.  Turned off wan shapping... and voila.  Issue seemed to be insta-resolved.

Unsatisfied with that... I decided to dig a lil deeper. I turned on Wan shaping again, but decided to set the settings manually instead of auto detect.

Here are the settings I used... (Advanced Tab>QoS)
Enable Traffic Shaping - Checked
Automatic Uplink Speed - Unchecked
Manual Uplink Speed - 5000
Connection Type: Cable or Other Broadand Network

Enable QoS Engine - Checked Automatic Classification - unchecked (this checked seemed to affect my upload speed by about 5-10% during testing) Dynamic Fragmentation - unchecked (this checked seemed to be the worse enemy for upload speed)

While I know I'm not any network guru (still have to use a subnet calculator for subnetting), I think I did a pretty good job drilling down the issue (once I got passed my service provider replacing modems).

Anyways, I've had overall good luck with D-Link products, even have a 5 port 10/100 switch (all metal) from 1998 that works great.  Hopefully, D-Link will just either put more documentation on the web, or hire better employees.

D-Link DIR-655 :: Motorola SB6141 Link Speed LED On Cable Modem Never Glows Blue

Feb 26, 2013

when I connect my DIR-655 to the Motorola SB6141 cable modem I notice that the link speed LED on the cable modem never glows blue indicating a gigabit connection, it only glows amber indicating a lower negotiated speed.  I am using a Cat6 cable between the two devices and have also tried a Cat5e cable.

When I try and force the WAN port speed to 1000Mpbs in the router interface the cable modem link speed will not light at all with no connectivity. Only resetting to Auto WAN port speed restores functionality albeit at the lower negotiated speed setting.

I'm running the DIR-655 rev B1 at 2.03NA firmware level.

I did connect the modem directly to my PC that uses an Intel Gigabit ethernet card and still had the lower connection indication (Amber) so it seems that the modem might be faulty.

D-link Dir-655 :: Wifi Link Speed Fluctuates On All Devices

Jan 9, 2013

I have a DIR-655 that I have been using for a while (b1 revision).  and suddenly I noticed my wifi speed fluctuates constantly.  My lenovo Y580 sees speed drop to 130 immediately and then it can slowly progress to 1 Mbps until the hardware is all rebooted.  Same happens to my Nexus 7, Dell XPS M1530 and to my roku. I have updated to 2.07 (since 2.10 is advised to avoid). And I have attempted changing channels or factory refresh. What Firmware version is currently loaded? 2.07What region are you located?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? Cable (link speed independent of internet speed)What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router? Separate Motorola ((link speed independent of modem)What ISP Modem make and model do you have? Does not matter, router issue. If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.  Not bridged

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.  Independent of issue, not a factor

Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.  Wired works perfect.Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.  Wireless issue.

Dlink DIR-655 NIC Link Speed

Jan 20, 2011

About 3 or maybe 4 years ago I bought a Dlink DIR-655 wireless router. On the box it listed it as an Xtreme N Gigabit Router, Wireless N (Draft N). I've had two Windows PCs connected to this router by Cat5 with "Intel 82562V-210 10/100 Network Connection" NICs on each set to "Auto detect". The link speed on the NICs show as 100Mbps.Also, I have an MBP and a Windows laptop that connects to this router at times, both with built-in wireless cards.I have Insight Cable and a 20Mbps download and 1.38 upload speeds. This router has worked great for the past years. Since it was getting a little old, I thought I would buy another just like it to have when this one defaults.I ordered a replacement from Amazon. The picture of the router at Amazon was the same as the one I have now. When the router arrived, it was a Dlink DIR-655; however, the router had a different faceplate and larger lights. On the box it listed it as "Xtreme N Gigabit Router". Also listed was N+ 300.

When I set the new DIR-655 up for my LAN and wireless, everything worked OK.However, I noticed the link speed on the NICs had dropped to 10Mbps.I can disable the NIC and then enable, or, unplug and plug in the Cat5 cable, and it will connect at 100Mbps for about 5 seconds and then revert back to 10Mbps.I returned the router to Amazon and purchased another just like it from Office Depot. The same problems are back.I have used the router set-up disk and have done a manual set-up. I cannot get the NICs to connect to the router above 10Mbps.I have turned off wireless, made different settings throughout the router and nothing works.I can set the NICs to 100Mbps full duplex and I get 1.5Mbps download speeds. If I set them to 100 half duplex, I might get 5Mbps.Believe me; I have just about changed every setting on this router with no success. I've turned the firewall, QoS off then on, wireless off and on, put one PC outside the router, but nothing works. Also, firmware is up to date. When I connect my PC direct to Insight modem or connect the original DIR-655, I get 100Mbps on the NIC and 20+Mbps download speed.I cannot get the NICs to connect above 10Mbps on this "new DIR-655" router.

D-Link DIR-600 Suddenly Limiting Speed?

Feb 21, 2012

I've had a DIR-600 for years, and this past month it has been really bad. I have a 3mbps Cable connection, always worked fine and fast, but since the start of the month I've been getting, at most, 60kb/s of download speed (I have a wired connection to the router). Speed tests register everything as fine, except for the download speed, which is really unstable and shoots all over the place, going from 1MB/s to 0 in some instances. I thought it was the ISP being bad since we're having a lot of problems with this provider where I work, but got tired of it and decided to do some troubleshooting myself. When I connect directly to the modem, without the router, I get the same fast speeds I used to. I tried rebooting everything, I tried resetting the router to factory defaults, but nothing seemed to change that. DL speed is always below 60KB/s and if something is downloading at that speed, a single page takes a minute to load.
