D-Link DIR-655 :: Can't Port Forward Or Use Virtual Servers At All
Mar 5, 2013
I just bought this to replace a working Linksys but wanted gigabit so after reading a lot of reviews this is the one I picked up. So tell me what is the magic toggle to get port forwarding to work or virtual servers? I've configured them on Linksys, netgear, Cisco, etc 100 times with no problems. Nothing I configure on this confounded thing works. I've setup 6 port forwards, RDP, FTP, VNC and none of them work. Nothing. "Connection timed out" when trying to connect. This works on my other router just fine so its not my software, or my PC configuration as they have no changed. Ports are correct.

the difference between Virtual Servers and Port Forwarding on the DIR-825? I'm transitioning my router setup for a Tomato/MLPPP router to the DIR-825 and I'm a little confused on when you would use "Virtual Servers" and when you would use Port Forwarding? In the past, I've always relied on port forwarding to allow access to specific services on my LAN (ie. VPN, Apple Remote Desktop, etc.), so again, unsure what the Virtual Servers is used for? From what I can tell, Virtual Servers is for services that require a single port for communication (ie. a basic SSH setup on port 22) while Port Forwarding allows for the setup of services that require multiple ports (ie. VPN on ports 500 [UDP], 1701 [UDP], 1723 [TCP] and 4500 [UDP]). Is that the differences between the two configuration pages? It just seems odd to me to have two separate windows for just this difference? If that's the case, is there any reason I couldn't just use port forwarding, even for services that only require a single port (just to keep everything on the same configuration page, under Port Forwarding)?

I have seemingly tried everything! I am still getting vpn error 720 using windows client trying to connect to vpn server using PPTP. I am about to go out an buy another WNR200 because vpn works flawlessly on that router. I have 2 virtual servers set up, one for port 1723, the other for port 47(GRE). All the ALG check boxes are checked(I have tried them both ways, when they are un checked and I use port forwarding i get vpn error 800). I have tried with SPI enabled and disabled. No port forwarding set up for vpn just the virtual servers. Firmware is 1.34NA, 2010/04/16.

I have read how to configure the Virtual Servers - Forwarding url...and added two entries, one for port 44612 and one for 32680 , my pc ip is 192.168.0. 100.Before I installed the router (my pc was connected directly to the lan connection) all was working just fine. And I double checked that the ports are not being blocked by firewall.

When can we have an upgrade to include 'Lookback' function for Virtual Server ? I understand both Build-120802 and Build-120926 does not support this Loopback feature. Without the loopback feature, we won't be able to test out Dynamic DNS URL is working or otherwise on local PC.

I can't get any type of port forwarding or DMZ to work with this router. I've checked for double NAT, have a static router IP etc.
I'm using Vista, but I've tried it on a computer with XP as well. I'm using the standard windows firewall, but I also tried disabling it.
I'm using the original 1.10 firmware, I don't know if this is a known issue that was fixed or not.

One of the persons involved in a home network has installed a Dlink DIR-825 Rev-B Extreme router on the Comcast cable system to allow a 'better' wireless signal on upper floors of the home. Two others involved in the same home network use a 'secure desktop access' software called NetOp to access the network remotely. To facilitate this software, we must 'port forward' port 6502 on BOTH UDP and TCP to the single system that is accessed.
However, this setup (simple port forwarding) does not seem to work - neither does 'virtual server', for that matter. Prior to this router being installed, it was extremely simple to accomplish this remote access using a Linksys router, so our software firewall configuration has not changed but the new Dlink seems unable to allow remote access.
How (and via which of these access methods - port forwarding or virtual server) would be best? This configuration seems frustratingly difficult to accomplish and I'm about to take the Dlink 'out' of the network and re-install the Linksys with a 'high-gain' external antenna to facilitate simple signal enhancement.

-wired connection

-I have tried port forwarding and virtual server
-3389 is forwarded fine
I cannot forward port 3390 anymore and I do not remember changing anything. I am trying to forward port 3390 b/c I already am using remoted desktop on another machine using port 3389 and it works fine. It is not the machine b/c I change port forwarding machine using 3389 and it works fine, but I need to have 3389 and 3390 set up.

DIR-601, Hardware Version : B1, Firmware Version : 2.00NA.Trying to open up port for RDP (3389) to WinXP machine (tried with DHCP and with static IP on XP workstation)Tried both Virtual Server (3389 to 3389 and other port numbers to 3389) and a simple Port Forwarding (3389 TCP). Both methods work correctly for about 15 or 20 minutes, then the router blocks traffic on the opened ports. If I delete the virtual server/port forward settings and recreate it will again work for about 15 or 20 minutes.Even tried creating my own schedule (although I would be quite happy with always)
Also can't find a link for the 2.00NA firmware to attemp a reflash, I have only be able to find firmware for the HWverA unit. (other than the wrt stuff, is there any other firmware for the B1 unit?

After I am on with Tech Support for 2 hours, they say the router is defective and will not work for Port Forwarding....!!
I have installed these in many locations and have not had a problem. ALL sites had a DHCP WAN.
I have PPPoE here on FIOS, with a great connection, no issues for 4 years. But lately my Intellinet Router has had to be reset 2-3 times a day, so I replaced it with the DIR-655 RevB.
Well, only for a little bit. The Dlink will NOT Port Forward... I need it to look at cameras, Remote Desktop, etc. Tech Support and I tried PF, and Virtual and DMZ with no luck. we tried many ports, with several internal IPs.
I have another DIR-655 in stock and it has the same results...
If I plug the Intellinet back in, all Port Forwarding works fine... no problem at all to any port. BUT it still has reset issues (not related to PF...)
Anyone else have PPPoE out there, with Port Forwarding issues?
I wrote Tech Support to notify me if they ever fix this glitch, and they sent back the instructions for Port Forwarding! Do they even read what we type?

When using the USB printer port share function, I found that some PCs, which had never physically connect to a USB printer before, will not have the virtual USB printer port in the port selection. In this way, TP-Link's USB printer controller will not be able to setup the connection. The PC will not be able to use the shared printer from my WDR3600.how can I create a virtual USB printer port in the remote PCs (without need to physically connect a printer to them) or other method to use the shared printer?

I have one dedicated IP issued to my home, along with another dynamic one if I need it(but I don't use it). I have a webserver, mail server, and name server up and running on a single machine exposed to the internet with my static IP. I have a domain name registered to my IP address. My webserver and name server work great, but I am having difficulty with the mail server. In order to have mail work correctly, I have been told that I need to get reverse DNS setup for my domain (something I had neglected to do). My nameserver responds to reverse lookups correctly when issued locally, but it looks like queries from the internet never reach it (I think my ISP catches requests upstream). I contacted them and they put a PTR record in for my IP pointing to ns1.mydomain.com. This all works fine, but the thought occurred to me that if in my hosts file I put my MX record in as mail.mydomain.com., any mail clients that do a reverse lookup of my IP won't get mail.

I have only recently noticed a HUGE decrease in my Utorrent speeds, so i thought i would have a gander and lo and behold.apparently the port Utorrent uses wasn't open. Now, i have tried about 10 different port numbers, made sure Utorrent is being accepted by Norton 360 Firewall, followed complicated directions to (i think) foward ports, and also follow directions to open a specific port.Nothing has worked so far, Utorrent still comes back with a port closed error.

I am trying to forward the ports for several ip network cams, that have built in webservers, on this router. I have done this before on my old Linksys router with no problems but the Netgear has me stumped. The only way I can reach any of these devices from the Internet is to map them to port 80. But that limits me to one device, hence the need to forward more ports. All cams have fixed ip addresses so it is not an issue of their ip addresses changing.
