Cisco Routers :: Set Up Synology VPN Server Through RV220W / Cannot Get A Windows 7

Jan 12, 2013

I am trying to set up a Synology VPN server thru a cisco RV220W and cannot get a windows 7 VPN client to connect to it.  Access rule was created on RV220W to port forward 1723 and also made sure the same port was forwarded on the built in router on the Synology NAS box, running DSM4.1 and made sure VPN server was up and running.  IP address of synology NAS is, mask of  DNSgateway is  Only running PPTP at this time.
When I run the windows 7 VPN client, I try to connect to the external internet addres:1723, make surePPTP is the only protocol and use a DNS of  When I try connect, I get an 868 error which says  "error 868:  The remote connection was not made because the name of the remote  access server could not resolve."
When I try to ping port 1723, I do not get a response which leads me to believe that the issue is the router and not the NAS box.  HTTP, HTTPS and FTP ports work fine.

Cisco Firewall :: FWSM 4.0 Email Server Cannot Connect To Email Gateway

Aug 8, 2012

I have a question about NAT behavior on FWSM 4.0. The problem is email server (Company A) cannot connect to email gateway (Company B) on the outside network and it randomly happen. I got this error from server guy "Detail: xlate has blocked the connection between A’s mail gateway and B’s mail gateway". It work fine again after clear xlate on firewall. [code]
1. How FWSM create xlate table like that? I mean it look like NAT0 for but it doesn't has any nat rule for on firewall.
2. What does it mean "connections 24" at the first of line? In the normal time, I only see the connections is 0 like the second line of xlate
3. After clear xlate global, the first line of xlate table is gone then email server can connect each other. Does is a bug on FWSM? or This is a normal NAT behavior of FWSM.

Synology DS1511 NAS / ISCSI Initiator Crashing Server 2008?

Aug 16, 2011

I have a Server 2008 server and a Synology DS1511+ Nas.The goal is to make an iSCSI connection from the Synology to the Server 2008 server. However, I am having an issue. I set this all up two weeks ago. For two weeks it was all running fine. Now, my iSCSI drive is dropping daily. And everytime I go into the iSCSI initiator and click anything, the server still allows me to do some things, but it basically locks up. I can't restart, services stop responding, etc... The only was I can break it out of that is a hard reset. Why iSCSI initiator keeps taking down my entire server to the point of hard restart? Once this is solved, I bet the iSCSI dropping daily will be solved as well. I have already talked with Synology, the log is producing nothing and they are suspicious that it has been running fine the past two weeks. Windows update is off (I manually do it during scheduled maintenance), and there is no av or firewall running, so rule those out.

Networking :: Need Business Network Solution DS212J

Nov 10, 2012

Currently we have the Synology DS212J system and that backups to the cloud as well. The problems are not being able to access it remotely easily, space, and the cloud integration is too slow and not reliable enough.

So we need a larger network, that is easily accessible remotely and backs up regularly. The main thing that will be taking up a lot of space over time is a lot of artwork files. A lot of these don't require on site network access, so if we had 30% storage local and the rest remote that would be fine, everything needs to be accessible remotely still though.

One thing I was looking into was Amazon storage gateway, it is pricey though so I'm wondering what other options there are. URL

Perhaps a larger NAS with different backup would work? It needs to run more seamless than the cloud is. We used Jungledisk before this which worked great with only a few users but we are now at 10+ users and growing.

D-Link DIR-655 :: Email Server Inaccessible Via WAN?

Jun 3, 2012

Up to this point, all the computers on the network accessed the e-mail server via the Windows name of the PC running the e-mail server.  However, one of the PCs will need to access e-mail from the WAN soon as opposed to the LAN, so I switched the server name in Thunderbird (e-mail client) to the actually fully qualified domain name of the server (registered at NO-IP, which redirects to the e-mail server at home).

The problem I am running into is that all the requests sent for IMAP or SMTP are being blocked by the router.  That's even though I added port forwarding rules for them.  The logs show messages similar to the following:

"Blocked incoming TCP connection request from to"

It doesn't make a difference if I change the endpoint filtering to "Endpoint Independent" either.  Any thoughts of what else I can try?  DMZ is not an option.

Before purchasing, I was using a free domain from DynDNS and it worked using it as an domain address. I'm wondering if maybe I have to set up the DNS on GoDaddy to foward the email protocol to my server.

Cisco WAN :: Open Up Port 25 Going Into 5505 For Email Server?

Do I create an SMTP Network Object and send TCP traffic throught NAT?
Or do I go to the ASDM's Configuration/Firewall, choose Public Servers, and choose Private Interface=inside, Public Interface=outside, set the private/public IPs, and choose SMTP as the service? This seems much simpler, but is it the correct way to do it?
I am using ASDM 6.4(5) and would like to use that versus the CLI.

WNDR3700 Outgoing Email Server Rejecting Messages

May 7, 2013

One of my customers uses Comcast email and all of a sudden couldn't send messages the other day, telling me it was giving her an error. She said that she reset her router, and the email started working again. When I finally got over there to check it out, the email had started experiencing problems again. The error she was having was Error 550: Message Rejected (when trying to send email). There didn't appear to be any issues with her internet connection, and she wasn't having issues connecting to the email server, it was simply rejecting her messages.

I told her that she would have to contact Comcast, as there was really nothing I could do to fix their email server returning an error. She wasn't too happy, and remained convinced that her router had something to do with it. It's a Netgear WNDR3700 or WNDR3800 that I setup for her last year, it's a fine router.Has anyone ever had a Comcast email server randomly start rejecting messages? I noticed that her outgoing email was set to use port 587 which seems like a nonstandard port and also no authentication, but I have no idea what the Comcast email settings are supposed to be.

I gave them my external IP and nothing worked out.I did a "netstat -a" search, and yes, I do have a connection listening at this port TCP.Still, I get this "Connection timed out: Connect" error when trying to reach my server from anywhere out side of my network.I called my ISP regarding this problem, and they told me that they were only blocking port 24 and 25, all other ports is free to use. And they told me that I don't need to Port-Forward or anything, I just plug my computer directly into the RG-BOX, and I should be good to go. But I'm not.

This works fine through a LinkSys RV042 in one location and a LinkSys WRT54GC in another, but fails through the DIR-615 B2 (2.24 firmware) at home. Servers :: Minecraft 1.3 LAN Server Function Fails Because Host IP Bad

Aug 3, 2012

Minecraft 1.3 LAN server function fails because host IP bad. The host (a laptop) connects to the LAN with a proper 10.0.1.X type address, but this particular laptop uses a 169.* address when it establishes/reports the game (instead of it's 10.0.1.X) and no other computer can connect to it. Other computers DO establish/report the 10.0.1.X address they receive from the wireless router, and they can host just fine- but I really need to get the one laptop to serve as host since it has more horsepower.

Proxy Server / Host File - Redirect Traffic

So I have a proxy server in my home that all the computers use to access the internet (XP Pro). I edited the host file on the proxy to redirect traffic for various reasons (ad blocking, etc.) But I have noticed that it doesn't seem to affect the computers that use the proxy. For example one entry in the host file could be abc123.com so that abc123.com would loopback to the localhost. For some reason this isn't working. Is there anyway to get this to work without changing the host file on each individual computer?

My understanding was that:

Green = source & mask
Red = destination & mask

However this seems to stop all my other hosts on LAN1 from pinging the server also.

Cisco Firewall :: 5520 - Inside Server To See Actual Outside Host Source IP In Udp Packet

Mar 3, 2013

I have a 5520 in production at a customer's site between an outside 802.11 network and an inside server.   The server can get to outside hosts OK, and the traffic is being NATed  properly, and sockets initiated by the server on the inside can pass data both ways, but I need to allow outside hosts the ability to send  'announcement' UDP packets to the inside server.  I thought this might be an  outside-NAT-required issue to get the traffic routed, but I need the inside server to see the  actual outside host source IP in the UDP packet, so I basically set the  outside host up similar to the inside host, just without the NAT table on the firewall -- it's subnet is outside the  destination (inside server) subnet, and its gateway is the outside  interface of the ASA, the same way the inside server is able to get to  hosts outside.  The firewall should just route the packet with a destination of the inside subnet once it sees that it hits a 'permit' ACL.
I have the appropriate ACL's set up, and when I do 'show access-list' I  see policy hits for the 'permit' statements where the outside host is  generating the announcement and it's hitting the ACL.  I even duplicated  the ACL into list 101 and 102, and applied 101 for inbound traffic on  the outside int, and applied 102 for outbound traffic on the inside int,  and I'm seeing policy hits on both permit statements outside and  inside, so it looks like the traffic is being passed on to the inside  interface and permitted, but the server isn't seeing the packets.
I can ping the outside interface from the outside, but cannot ping the  inside interface or any inside hosts from the outside, even though I  have 'permit icmp any any' enabled on the ACL on both ints. When I  remove the firewall and put the outside clients on the same subnet, the server sees the packets just fine.
I set up the same scenario in my lab with an ASA 5505, with the same results.  Below is the running config from the 5505 in the lab.  The production firewall is running a slightly older version of ASA, so I made the configuration as basic as possible on the 5505 to match the config in the field:
: Saved
ASA Version 8.3(1)
hostname ciscoasa
enable password Guh9Xxhb9mcC8lV1 encrypted

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5505 - Local Host Names To DNS Server At Main Site

Mar 3, 2013

I ran into a very interesting problem that occurred today and I'm trying to figure out why it happened. If it was one ASA 5505 that just required the reboot, then I'd have just chalked it up to a glitch, but when we built a new AD/ DNS server on the main network at the main site and changed the 3 Remote site ASAs to point to the new DNS server in the DHCPD options, none of them could ping any local host names to the DNS server at the main site they were now pointing too, but external host names { URL} all translated and pinged fine.
From a laptop on one of the remote sites, we could ping the new AD/DNS server( and the old AD/DNS server( and everything else at the main site, and telnet to port 53 showed successful across the Easy VPN from the Remote site to the new server at the main site. When wire shark was added to the new DNS server at the main site, the DNS request and replies for {URL}, for example, came and worked fine, but any requests for local resources never made it to the server from the remote sites.
A reboot of one of the Remote Site ASA's corrected the issue. Then I rebooted the other two remote site ASAs, and now DNS was working fine for everybody. I had also tried clearing the ARP cache on the ASAs before resorting to rebooting them. I also tried rebooting the laptop thinking the local DNS cache needed cleared before resorting to rebooting the ASAs. I'm struggling to understand why external, public host names made it through and resolved from the remote sites to the new server at the main site, but anything local failed before even reaching the new server(The new DNS server could resolve requests made by computers at the main site, but the remote sites that traverse the Easy VPN from the ASAs failed).  The new AD/DNS server is the only server configured for DNS for all remote site computers.
Is any of this making sense? I'm wondering if clearing the x late or local host tables would have corrected it without having to reboot. I'm just trying to grasp the understanding here and figure out what happened.

Painfully Slow Transfer Speeds On Synology DiskStation DS412+ NAS?

Mar 23, 2013

I've just bought a Synology DiskStation DS412+ and put 2 x 3TB Western Digital Red drives in it, set up in RAID 0. It's currently plugged in to my gigabit Netgear switch.I created a user with full permissions on the NAS, created a share, mapped a drive on my Windows 7 PC (also gigabit ethernet) and tried copying some files, but I'm getting painfully slow transfer speeds (< 40KB/s - yes, kilobytes, it's not a typo!

Does anyone have any ideas why it'd be so slow? There's loads of reports online of people getting > 80MB/s from this NAS.

I've copied files from this PC to my MacBook Pro in the past and got decent enough speeds so it shouldn't be an issue with the NIC on this PC, or (hopefully) the Netgear switch it's going through.
