Download Speed Varies On Two Systems At Same Time

Feb 19, 2012

I am using my normal Ethernet cable that I used on my old PC at the exact same location / circumstances, but when I plug the cable in my new PC, my download speed peaks at 81.5 kb/s and my upload speed peaks at 10 kb/s. Now when I put it back in my old pc I get 3mb/s download speed and 0.5 mb/s upload speed. I don't quite understand what the problem is. Do I need to update drivers/BIOS? I can't find any updates. This is a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit with barely any programs installed as of yet. I have reinstalled Windows 7 aswell, to no avail.

Download Speed Degradation Over Time - SBN WR11N R2 Or ISP?

Mar 20, 2012

I'm having issues with my download speed lately and I need to know whether it's my router that's causing the problem or my ISP.When I leave the router on for a couple of days, without rebooting it, my download speed degrades to about 40-50% of what it usually is and when I reboot it the speed is back to normal. It's a 150Mbps Wireless N router, model SBN WR11N R2. I have no idea what brand it is, my ISP gave it to me a few years ago. Seems to be running some custom firmware installed by the ISP.

Cisco Firewall :: Ping Reply Time Varies From ASA5520 To ISP Gateway

Jan 22, 2012

I have   newly deployed network. I have  two ASA5520-AIP20-k9. both connected to ISP and configured as Active/standby failover. the ASAs were working fine at first but later on, the  internet connection becomes very slow. the ping reply i am getting from  my next hop(ISP router) varies during  the peak hour is some times in 2000  msec or above but during off hours, the ping reply time is 1 and 2 msec. when I directly connect my laptop to the link that comes from the ISP its ping reply is 1msec and 2msec. I thought the ping reply of the ASA5520 to the ISP gateway should be constant and should be 1 and 2 msec regardsless of the traffic passing through the firewall.

Linksys Wireless Router :: E1200 - Speed Varies At Different Place After Firmware Update

Jan 25, 2013

I have a year old E1200 router. I just updated the firmware today, made adjustments to the MTU range to suit cable service and selected a different channel (9) as the neighbors were mostly on channels 2 and 6.My question is really in regard to the speed results of the router.  In the immediate room where the router is located I am getting 17.6 Mbs download speed/ 3.53 upload speeds but if I move to my living room - less than 20 feet away and a few walls - the upload speed drops sharply to 3.21 Mbs download/3.21Mbs uploas.I have read where the router placement can be key.  My router is  sitting on the desktop.  If I elevate the router will it improve performance 20 feet away or should I invest in upgraded router like a E3200 or look into a plug in type repeater?

Linksys Wireless Router :: Wrt54gs Wifi Download Speed 1/3 Of Wired Speed

Dec 28, 2010

I just discovered that my wireless download speeds are 5Mbps, compared to 16Mbps if my laptop is connected directly to the modem or wired through the router.  Uploads are 2Mbps either way.  I have a WRT54GS v.6 with firmware version v1.52.8 which I updated today, completed by setting factory default through the router webpage after I discovered this discrepancy.  The firmware update did not improve the download speed appreciably, if at all.Should the wireless connection be that much slower than the wired connection through the router?  If not, what sort of issues could I be having to account for this?

I did just replace my modem when I discovered I was having erratic speedtests and that corrected that problem.  That is when I became aware of the wireless issue, so not sure how long that has been the case.  I have Charter's 16/2 HSI, living in a sparsely populated area with solid internet service.  There is no external nor internal interference on this 2.4Ghz band.

Belkin Basic USB Wireless Adapter / Very Slow Download Speed - Upload Speed Is Fine

Jan 11, 2011

Recently my desktop has experienced very slow download speeds (~0.11 Mbps), however the upload speed appears to be in line (~2.0Mbps). These numbers are taken from Comcast's speed test (my ISP). It is obviously a problem with my PC because everything else on the network (PS3, Laptop) have great signals with no problems. I just recently reverted the Desktop back to its factory state, and everything was working fine for a couple of months. The desktop in question uses Vista 32-bit and the Belkin Basic USB Wireless Adapter.

If I set it to 10mbps full duplex, download speeds jump to normal (500kbps for most HTTP sources)his happens on just this new computer (wired connection), any other computers on the network (wireless) work just fine

D-Link DIR-655 :: Download Speed Fine But Upload Speed Is Way Slow?

Mar 17, 2011

I live in the tampa bay area, I have bright house (BHN) as my service provider, which provides a Road Runner Lightning (40/5) package.  I previously used BHN's top tier (20/2) back in July (and prior) with no problems.

After converting to Lightning in August of this year (2010).  Of course, BHN (and every other provider) wants to force a modem/router down your throat, so I had them bridge it (in short, turn it into a dummy modem with no routing). I had an SMC branded modem gateway at the time.  I work from home 2 days a week (so I can spend more time with my kids during morning, lunch, right after work) and this requires me to use QoS to ensure my VOIP work calls don't get dropped, if the family is watching youtube videos or watching netflex.

My network was as follows SMC Modem >WAN IP>>WAN Port>>D-link DIR-655>>Switch Ports>PC1, PC2, PC3

Everything seemed fine (from a usability stand point) till about 2 weeks ago when my upload speed seemed to grind to halt.  Normally I was able to upload about 200-300K per second, and I noticed this dropped to about 45K per second during a drop box upload.   First thing I did was power cycle both my modem and router (in the proper/usual order).  After they both come up, I start using speed test to find out what my upload speeds were.  I was getting about 39Mbps down, but only .56Mbps up still.  I factory reset my router.... test, similar speeds.  Power cycle all computers (just in case), and then modem/router.  Tested, similar speeds.   Updated the firmware to the latest. Same issue

Called BHN customer service, they factor reset it, but it wasn't in bridge mode.  If I by passed the 655, in factory mode (non bridge mode) upload speeds returned to better than expected states.  If I bridged the cable modem, upload speeds seemed to crash.

Had BHN replace the modem, seemed fixed for a day, then issue came back.  Had them come back out and replace it again, this time with a Motorolla Surfboard modem... same issue.  Fine during factory reset, however after they bridge the modem, upload speeds were fine.  Told BHN I would take it from there.. Connected up the DIR-655, and upload speeds crashed again. (.6Mbps).  Called D-Link Support, and the Chinese English speaking rep seemed to not be listening to me and tried to have me adjust my MTU as well as Wireless settings.  Long story short... the rep was a level 0 id10t and I hope D-link will consider hiring better employees/contractors.  So I was all about to give up and replace it with a DD-WRT capable router (which it takes me a lot to want to swap hardware), when I discovered the wan shaping was on.  Which I thought to myself... nah... QoS has never messed up before... why would it be the cause.  Turned off wan shapping... and voila.  Issue seemed to be insta-resolved.

Unsatisfied with that... I decided to dig a lil deeper. I turned on Wan shaping again, but decided to set the settings manually instead of auto detect.

Here are the settings I used... (Advanced Tab>QoS)
Enable Traffic Shaping - Checked
Automatic Uplink Speed - Unchecked
Manual Uplink Speed - 5000
Connection Type: Cable or Other Broadand Network

Enable QoS Engine - Checked Automatic Classification - unchecked (this checked seemed to affect my upload speed by about 5-10% during testing) Dynamic Fragmentation - unchecked (this checked seemed to be the worse enemy for upload speed)

While I know I'm not any network guru (still have to use a subnet calculator for subnetting), I think I did a pretty good job drilling down the issue (once I got passed my service provider replacing modems).

Anyways, I've had overall good luck with D-Link products, even have a 5 port 10/100 switch (all metal) from 1998 that works great.  Hopefully, D-Link will just either put more documentation on the web, or hire better employees.

Download Speed Is Very Slow

Apr 9, 2013

I have Verizon DSL. Since I've gotten it turned on in my new apartment it's been randomly DCing, I had a tech come out and tell me it was because I'm too far from the central office(thought I'm only a mile from the office?) and I needed to call and get my mbps reduced from 10, to 5. So, I called and did that and I was still having the same issue. Today another tech came out, told me the same thing, but I needed to be reduced to 3, and left. I called and got it reduced again. They said it should be 3-5 and I was at 5-7. So, now my download speed is actually higher than it was when I was 5-7(it was at 3 mbps usually, now it's 5), but my ping has doubled. Pages are taking longer to load, and when I play any games online there's a noticeable delay. I have been DCing less often, but it's still happening.

Download Speed Low On Individual PCs

As I perform download speed test online, at my unit, I usually get the speed of 40 up to 49.7 MB/s, upload 0.7 - 1.5MB/s. However in case of downloading the same file from the same source other pc at our home network usually download it at twice or trice the speed my unit does. I'm positive that my card is capable of speeds up to 100MB/s.

Download Speed Limited To 160 Kb/sec?

Jul 20, 2011

I have QWEST DSL, and I am supposed to get 1mb + download speeds from them. When I talk to them on the phone they test my line at over 1mb and say any problems had to be on my end.

I have replaced my router and my network card. When I test my connection speed at this website CNET Bandwidth Meter: Online Speed Test - CNET Reviews

I get 1.2 mb/sec but I have never gotten better than 160 kb/sec download speed from any website I've downloaded from. Is this a software issue? Is my computer somehow throttling what it receives?

I did a Line Quality Test here DSL Reports and it is here: Line quality test packet loss and latency | DSLReports.com, ISP Information

I did three tests, and the bottom part failed 4 times out of 6, so the failures are repeatable. The data all looks comparable for each test on a cursory examination, not knowing what I am looking for.

I have no idea what this test means/indicates.

So my questions are:

1) What further information do I need to supply? (Assume I don't know how to do what you are asking me to do if it is in the least bit technical.)

2) Is my problem with my phone lines? I live in an older area and the lines have not been updated in decades so it may be that QWEST is claiming they can deliver more then they actually can.

At this point I suspect I will need to get cable in order to get decent download speed, QWEST doesn't offer service at the speed I get, so I can't opt for a lower price/slower speed option from them even though they are not delivering what I am promised.

I did a speed test on multiple sites and my download speed comes out at about .2mbps and my upload is still where it should be at .6-.8mbps. I have a 12mbps connection so this does not make sense at all. Originally thinking it was malware, I formatted both my hard drives and did a clean install of windows 7 and it did nothing to resolve the issue. Could it be that my wireless card's radio is failing?

No Upload Speed - Download Is Fine

Dec 9, 2011

About 2 months or so ago, my upload speed just pretty much stopped working. Nothing changed with my PC/modem/router, so I don't know what happened. My download speed is FINE, fast like it's always been(over 20 Mbps). I can upload a file maybe 500KB or lower, but it takes several minutes. If I try to upload anything bigger, it doesn't work(errors/gets stuck).

It's not my PC because I have the same problem on my tablet and ipod. It's not the router because I tested it by just hooking up the modem directly to my PC.

At speedtest.net, it just gets stuck on the upload test and never gives me results.

I rent my modem from Comcast. Should I just bring this modem in and get a new one?

0.05 Mbps Download Speed With DSL Service?

Jan 16, 2011

The title of the thread says it all, but perhaps it does not speak to the level of frustration my family and I are experiencing with our DSL internet service: Many simple, easy-to-load sites like Google will not load on the first try. On Safari, the bottom toolbar will say "Connecting to google.com" until I refresh the page or restart the web browser. Internet Explorer and Firefox are no better -- I've triedA two-minute YouTube video will take about 10 minutes to load (if the page loads in the first place, which it often does not). Speed test sites, like speedtest.net, which reported a 0.05 mbps download speed and a 0.20 mbps upload speed, usually do not work. I had to refresh speedtest.net four or five times before the "testing download speed" section worked.

Gmail has become so slow that I have to use the HTML version, and even that will fail to register my commands about half the time. The only way for me to view most webpages in a reliable manner is to Google search for them, then click on the "Cached" page, and then click "Text-only version." Stuff other than text will prevent the page from loading about 50% of the time.We have a Qwest modem but our ISP is called "TIES." We have their "Residential DSL connection," as described here:
