Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT45G - Possible To Allow ICMP Ping Response

Jul 13, 2008

I need to remotely monitor a WRT45G from a remote host on the Internet. As such, I want to allow ICMP ping replies on the public Internet interface. However, I have found no feature to allow me to do this. Similar Netgear devices do allow this feature. I suspect the answer is, "you can't do that".

Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT54GH No Ping Response After A While?

Mar 29, 2012

I've updated latest firmware & installed 5 pieces of WRT54GH at our building. Then I noticed each of them disappear from wireless connections list and IP scan list (no ping response). If they might not response to pings but they serve as switch without any problem, I mean there are no wired connection problems, they work as switch all the time. The problems are -again-

1-) Wireless lost   and / or 2-) Ping response lost

Turning them off and on again will fix them. But I'm tired of bosses who complain about their faulty pc connectivity.

Don't they run 7/24? I tried to restart them on every 12 hours programmatically/remotely but it couldn't work.

Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT160N Ping Response Time?

Aug 31, 2009

I have a brand-new WRT160N router (just installed FW v3.0.02) that I am using in mixed mode, 20MHz only, Channel 11, not filtering anonymous requests, beacon at 2306, RTS at 2307, fragmentation at 2346, MTU at 1400.

These settings bring the response from a simple ping command over the wireless network down to approximately 6ms on average, which is good. However, when I still noticed inconsistency with my internet response over wireless, I decided to do a test.

By simply running the "ping" command on 192.168.1.1 (the router address) over the wireless network repeatedly (approx 3 seconds between commands), I can see that approximately every 65 seconds or so, router response time increases to over 100ms for a few seconds, then decreases down to 6 ms or so for another 65-70 seconds. See the chart below. The interval looks pretty consistent to me, with the exception of one stretch where it goes for over two minutes without a spike. I see this pattern regardless of what else I'm doing over the network. I do not see this behavior running the same test when physically wired to the router (ping response time is a flat line at 0ms).

Cisco Switching/Routing :: ICMP High Response Time To SVI Interface 3750X

Mar 13, 2011

I am in the process of installing a 3750x (IOS 12.2 (53r) SE2 IP Base) Cisco Catalyst switch in a new network of just 2 PC's (2 hosts, OS windows7 64Bits). I have enabled SVI interfaces with the both hosts installed in 2 different network segments.  We then start connectivity test.  The response time for the PING command between both hosts remain below 1 millisecond, whereas the response time between the hosts and their correspondent SVI interface is variable, and at all time is higher than 1 millisecond, sometimes it reaches 17 milliseconds. (Note that the switch CPU usage is only 8% at the time of testing)  We have performed this same connectivity test changing the 3750x switches  and in two different locations obtaining the same results.

Linksys Wireless Router :: E4200 Received Response From Host (IP Address)

Jun 23, 2011

I replaced my old wireless router with a Cisco Linksys E4200, running firmware version 1.0.02 build 13  May 24, 2011.  About once a minute the router sends an unsolicited DNS message to the IPV4 multicast address 01:00:5e:00:00:fb with a destination IP address of 224.0.0.251.  The unsolicited message is a DNS response with source port 32784, transaction ID 0, flags 0x8400 (standard query response, no error), questions 0, answer RRs 2, authority RRs 0 and additional RRs 1.  The two answers both relate to the router itself: one has Name Cisco18738.local, type A (host address), class 1 (IN), cache flush true, time to live 1 minute, data length 4, and the address of the router.  The other is the reverse of the same address.  The additional record is for Cisco18738.local, type NSEC, class IN, cache flush true, time to live 1 minute, data length 5, next domain name Cisco18738.local, RR type A (host address).

When my desktop computer receives these messages it logs an error, for example: "Jun 23 07:39:22 sauterws02 avahi-daemon[1067]: Received response from host 10.146.9.1 with invalid source port 32784 on interface 'eth0.0'"  The 10.146.9.1 is the router's IP address.  I also see these messages on the wireless link from my laptop.I suppose the E4200 is generating these DNS messages in a misguided attempt to make sure there is no old information about its name.  Is there a way to turn them off?  If not, is there a way to report this to Cisco as a bug?

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5520 - Syslog And Tacacs Generate Ping Response?

Mar 20, 2012

I'm trying to configure an ASA firewall (FW2) for syslog and tacacs and am experiencing strange behavior.  Both the syslog and ACS server are on the inside of another firewall (CoreFW).  Whenever a log message is generated on FW2 the request is dropped by CoreFW and message '%ASA-4-313004: Denied ICMP type=0, from laddr FW2 on interface outside-b2b to syslog01: no matching session' is displayed.  The same thing occurs for tacacs.

It appears that the syslog and ACS requests are generating ICMP echo replies, which the core firewall drops since no session exists on a lower security interface.  I have access lists configured on CoreFW to allow the syslog and tacacs requests.

FW2 is running asa825-k8.bin, CoreFW is asa824-k8.bin

Linksys Wireless Router :: E1500 / ISP Blocking ICMP On WAN Side

Oct 5, 2012

Device: Linksys E1500 - firmware: 1.0.01? I've got a static IP setup for a small remote office and want to keep tabs on their internet connection by pinging it via a monitoring program we use. However, the router seems to not responding to ICMP.

- Filter Anonymous Internet Requests is unchecked.- I've verified that the Static IP is correct.

- I've tried pinging from several remote locations on different connections, with no avail.

I can't seem to figure out why i can't ping this device. I just want to make sure there isn't a setting in the wireless router that is preventing echo replies. The only other thing i can assume is that Comcast is filtering ICMP on their side of the WAN connection.EDIT: Here's a traceroute from my PC to the WAN side of the Linksys....

Cisco Routers :: ICMP (ping) Protocol Binding With The RV042?

Aug 7, 2011

Is it possible to use protocol binding to route pings only over the WAN1 connection, even if WAN1 fails? It seems like the protocol binding feature of the Linksys RV042 is ignored once WAN1 fails.  I would like to use a ping from the LAN to an external IP to verify if the WAN1 connection is down, or is up and then use that information to power up, or power down a secondary communications system (WAN2).  However, if the protocol binding is ignored when WAN1 fails, then I will not be able to use the ping to establish the state of WAN1 connection. Addtionally, is it possible to use protocol binding to only route pings and allow all other traffic to use either WAN connection? I have seen these feautures on a different brand of router that failsover to a cell connection, but it is not a true dual WAN router. It would be nice if the RV042 would allow this kind of control. Are there any other dual WAN routers out there that have this kind of protocol binding feature?

Linksys Wired Router :: RV082 ICMP And HTTPS - Computers Only Can Navigate Through HTTP Web Pages?

Oct 21, 2012

Let's see if you can with this one:

DSL Internet Router (Dynamic IP) -> Linksys RV082 -> Firewall PC -> LAN

DSL Internet Router: 192.168.3.0/24
Linksys RV082 WAN2: 192.168.3.0/24
Linksys RV082 LAN: 192.168.5.0/24
Firewall (2 Nics): Nic1 is 192.168.5.0/24 and Nic2 is 192.168.1.0/24
LAN: 192.168.1.0/24

RV082 WAN 2: Configured with a DHCP IP Address from DSL Internet Router so it has 192.168.3.0/24 range IP.
Load Balancing enabled
Static Route added on RV082: 192.168.1.0 mask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.5.x interface LAN
Firewall PC is completely Open as i was using it before.

I had a Fortgate 60B and everything worked fine, then a bought a RV082 and now i can get this up and running properly. The thing is this....whit the actual setup i have, computers only can navigate through HTTP web pages, other ports seem to be closed, but if the Firewall PC was blocking this i guess i'll know because it shows a message on screen when a policy is being applied. If i try to open HTTPS Pages it doesnt work, Even a simple pinng to google.com doesn't work from my LAN (192.168.1.0/24), but if i connect a computer on a local port on RV082 i can PING and i can browse anywere i want.

It seems to be that Firewall PC is causing problems but i execute a tracert to [url]...., the packet get stuck in the RV082.What im thinking is that maybe the RV082 doesn't allow to go trhu at all if the traffic comes from other networks that doesn't belong to the one configured on its LAN side.By the way the Firewall PC connected to the RV082 directly navigates perfectly.

PS. The reason im using Firewall PC is because that way is much easier and flexible to handle policies for Internal users than in the RV082 Router. I use this ume basically to set up VPN IPSEC and Dual WAN Load Balancing.

Linksys Wireless Router :: Cannot Ping Between Two E4200s

Jan 30, 2012

I think I've managed to stumble through setting up two E4200s to work together, with only one acting as DHCP server (Benny) and the other in bridge mode (Frida).  I can Ping various other devices on my home network, including common items like a NAS drive (wired via ethernet to the server Benny.

Most other devices are wireless so when I Ping, I guess I cannot be sure if each unit is speaking wirelessly to each device I Ping, or if the packets are being passed to the 'nearest' of the two E4200s.  I cannot Ping Frida from Benny nor Benny from Frida.  I've set Frida up on a static IP at 192.168.1.150 and Benny is 192.168.1.1.  They can Ping themselves, but not the other. I can reach the browser utility for each E4200 on its respective IP (and I'm using that utility to do the Pinging).

In the case of Frida Pinging the NAS drive, I think the only way is via Benny.  I've tried the Traceroute diagnostic but all I seem to get is results that begin with 1, and then tell me the IP I was aiming for and then repeating that IP.  In the case of wireless devices, I interpreted the 1 to mean 1 'hop' (I'm totally trying to decipher the use of English words in networking jargon).  I would expect when Frida, the access point, Pings the NAS drive, there ought to have been two hops and I should have seen a trace through 192.168.1.1, but the result reads quite similarly to the other (wireless) devices.  My iMac is connected via ethernet through Frida, onto Benny and the internet, and I get good speed and ping results when I check my internet connection.  Airport is off, just in case I was circumventing a faulty Frida.  But Frida seems to be working in some ways... the browser utility, ethernet.

Oh, in the E4200 manual, it recommends connecting the access point via one the LAN ports back to Benny, rather than through the Internet port.  I thought this was weird and things were working when I had it hooked up either way.  Right now, it's set up on a LAN port, meaning that Frida has two ethernet LAN ports connected, and nothing else (except wireless).

I have a Sonos sound system 'riding' this network and I can Ping all of the Sonos units from each of Benny and Frida but the Sonos system went down this morning, which is why I started to look into the network itself.  Everything worked well, including the Sonos units, before the weekend.  Right now, Sonos desktop controller software wants to update itself but cannot seem to see the internet.  Is not being able to Ping between server and access point normal?
