Sharing :: Limited Users On SME Network Loose Shared Printer

May 18, 2012

I thought that there are more security issues than LAN issues, I have a network with 11 computers of which 1 is SME server and 10 are clients (mainly 256MB DDR1 tech machines withceleron D processors, onboard VGA and sound; there are few 1024MB DDR2, AMD Sempron LE processors). All clients have XPSP3, .NET framework 1.1+2.0, Office 2003, AvastFree 7.0, Mozilla Firefox 7.0 and several utilities not very important. Every client has 2 users (Admin and User) on Local Machine and 1 on DOMAIN (UserDomain). Both User accounts are limited. First, all computers were in same workgroup and not part of DOMAIN. In that time, printers on clients were shared among themselves and worked flawlessly. After joining the clients to the DOMAIN, the work continued without issues. One day, I have changed the name of the SME SERVER computer and the issues have started. Several clients can not connect to those shared printers, even others are using them well. When I want to add shared printer I can not browse the particular computer on which the shared printer is (through ADD PRINTER wizard). I manage to do it writing the full path of the particular computer and there I can choose the printer.

After selecting it, username and password is required to finish the adding. Of course I use the Admin username ad password, and after typing it error message pop up (printer is unavailable or can not connect to it). After this I close all windows, start the adding procedure again, and then I can add the printer normally. The problem continues, because, on those computers on which I have had this complicated way of install, after several days shared printers refuse to print saying Access denied. Then I have to delete the printer again, install it twice and hope to work after that for a weak at least.

The problem is getting bigger, as on one client computer I can not print from browsers (Firefox 7, IE 8) but from Office there is no problem. Of course I have checked other topics about this and use setups-modifications-advices but they did not solve printing problems. I have even reinstalled that computer, but the problem remains.

Cisco Switches :: SG-300 What Is Referred To As Four Shared Ports

Jul 16, 2011

I just purchased an SG-300 52 port switch.  I'm not sure I understand the use of the extra ports.  To the right of the 48 ports are a group of 4 ports.  Are these what is referred to as the four shared ports?  In practical terms, if I wire the 48 ports to different rooms in our office, and I have two other devices at the rack I want to connect to the SG-300 (a cable modem and a NAS Drive), what port numbers should these two devices be connected to?

Cisco Switches :: SG300 - Can't Able To Access Shared Folders

Jul 9, 2012

I supplied 3 numbers of SG300 series switches for the sole reason to have inter-vlan routing. I created 4 VLANs in the switches and made one switch as Layer 3 switch and other 2 as Layer 2 switch. Inter-Vlan routing is working fine. I am able to ping PCs from different VLANs. But I am not to access shared folders. Customer has installed Window 2003 server installed and it is in VLAN 1. There are some folders created in this server and it is very important for users to have access to the folders. Also, I am not able to access shared folders in other VLANs. I have created a case with Cisco small business and I got a reply saying that the switches will not support shared folder feature, which I think is not real. I am getting a very time to implement this solution in the network. I have a Sonicwall firewall after Core switch which is connected to ISP.

Cisco Switches :: SG 300-10MP Multiple Vlans But Shared Up-link

Aug 30, 2011

I have 8 apartments that have a single internet connection coming into the building, I then have a PoE Access Point in each of the 8x apartments.

What I would like to be able to do is to have each apartment within its own vlan, but to be able to use the internet via one of the non-PoE ports (port 9 say) but do not want residents in different flats to be able to see each others devices on the same network.

I have a Cisco SG 300-10MP which has 8x PoE ports and 2x Ethernet ports, one of which my Internet connection is plugged into (using WiMax).

Cisco Switches :: ESW-520 / Setting Up Two Separate Networks With Access To Shared Resources?

Jan 19, 2013

We have a two separate businesses in the same building who will both need access to shared resources and the same internet connection. They will need to remain on separate subnets and cannot communicate directly to each other. The current switch is a Cisco ESW-520-48P and we are looking at purchasing an SG-300-20P for the new business moving in. Heres how we envisage setting it up:

ESW-520 will host Company A's network. Workstations, servers etcSG-300 will have two VLANS. VLAN1 will host all Company B's network. Workstations, servers etc. VLAN2 will host the shared resources such as printers. The internet gateway is a UNIX based system with 3 NICS. 2 NICS are taken up by ADSL connections while the other NIC is the LAN, which would connect to VLAN2 on the SG-300. We would like to define which ADSL connection to route through depending on which subnet traffic is originating. The ESW-520 will need access to the shared resources and internet gateway on VLAN2 on the SG-300.

Cisco Routers :: SRP520 IPsec With Complex Pre-shared Key

Jan 7, 2012

I had lots of trouble creating an IPsec VPN tunnel between a SRP527W (FW 1.01.24 (003) Sep 7 2011) and 2811 (Version 12.4(25e)) Router. The message on the 2811 was "IKE message from x.x.x.x  failed its sanity check or is malformed". The reason was the password complexity (or length, which I did not try out). The password I used was "$SIMA$B3nlXySl-q+C&PnI" which is not in use any more . Now I use a password without special chars and it works fine.

I think this is a bug on the SRP527W, because it works fine with an old 836. How to report a bug to cisco? I'm Cisco SMB partner, but I'm not allowed to create a TAC service request.

Cisco Routers :: Symantec VIP Users Out There SA540

Jul 16, 2012

We have a Cisco SA540.  It has been an extremely reliable UTM  router.  Other than SSL VPN not working for Mac OSX, we are very pleased  with the unit.We have a 3 year contract for IPS, a 3 year contract  for Trend Micro Protectlink Web, and a 3 year contract for Small  Business Support Service for the unit.Right now we are trying to setup the VIP functionality  but it is not going very well.  To sum it up in a few words, we cannot  get the SA540 to prompt the SSL VPN users to enter the 6-digit access  code.

We setup an account at Verisign and requested a trial  for VIP.  They promptly setup the trial account.  Getting everything  setup was a breeze.  The Verisign website is very well documented.  They  even had specific instructions for Cisco SA500 Series routers!!!  We  were very impressed with Verisign's implemenation.  We are able to get  our SA540 to talk to Verisign (basically, when we activate or deactivate  an SSL VPN VIP user in the SA540 web GUI, you can immediately see it  enabling or disabling the user on the Verisign website... it is very  cool).Unfortunately no matter what we do, we cannot get the  SA540 to prompt the SSL VPN user to enter the one time 6-digit code.  In  this case, we are using Verisign's iPhone app called 'VIP Access'.

I called into the SBSC and talked to a guy.  I felt  really bad for him.  He used WebEx to log into my desktop and I showed,  and explained, to him how all of it worked (setting up VIP in the SA540  web GUI, as well as, and the Verisign website).  He had no clue about  Verisign, VIP, or the two-factor authentacation concept at all.  I told  him that he needed to escalate my case to the SA500 Series team, but of  course he had to try.  He was supposed to  call me back yesterday or today.  I am sure he is dreading calling me  back as he probably still has no clue.

How to use the VIP functionality?  Or how it works and set it up?  We would like to  at least get it to work before our 30-day trial period is up.  I have a  distinct feeling that the functionality used to work, but Cisco hasn't  kept up the firmware with all the latest back-end API calls to Verisign  or something similar.

Cisco Routers :: SB RV180 VPN Users Not Showing Up?

May 15, 2013

I have a Cisco Small Business RV180 and I have several VPN users configured.  IPsec between my home router (also an RV180) and work router (router in question) is working fine, several PPTP users working fine and 1 QVPN user that works as well.  I set up another qvpn user and it didn't work.  I went back into the router to check and make sure I hadn't goofed something up and saw that I had 8 lines, 1 and 2 were the QVPN users and 6 other PPTP users, however, the "pages" footer (for lack of a better word) only displays 1 -5 of 5 instead of the 1-8 of 8 I would expect it to show.I dumped the cfg file and opened it up, all 8 user configurations show up.  One was my user account which showed negative numbers for the logon time, something like -1day -hours -minutes -sec, so I thought that that might be locking up the router or something so I deleted my PPTP account but it didn't allow the new user access.  I deleted all PPTP accounts and no luck there either.I'm running firmware 1.0.2.6.

Cisco Routers :: SRP527W Maximum Concurrent Users

Oct 11, 2012

We have a client that is looking to provide connectivity for up to 800 users at a conference. They have a SRP527W available to them. Looking at the configuration we have been able to provide the needed number of IP addresses through VLANs each with their own DHCP scope.

However we are doubtful that the router will be able to process such a high number of connections (NAT, Firewall etc.) even though they will be using a specialised application that pulls static content via WAN.

Thus far we have been told that the unit has supported 150 user no issue, my I am guessing anything over 200 and you would start to see stability issues?

Cisco Routers :: QuickVPN RV042 V03 Some Users Connect Others Can't

Feb 10, 2013

A client of mine has a Cisco RV042 Router. I've configured it to run VPN and it works, sort of. Some clients can connect, others can't, for no discernible reason.

Specific machine issues are Windows 7 x64 or x86, Quick VPN latest release, unobtrusive (Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials) security, etc. 2 separate machines on the same home remote network, 1 can connect just fine, the other can't. My laptop (Win7 x64) connects just fine, one of my techs can connect OK, the IT support guy that works for this client can connect.

Particulars of the router: Firmware version: v4.0.4.02;  PID VID : RV042 V03;  Firmware MD5 Checksum :     1f84d8d0a2a8b99f9bfa4409e64547aa

Cisco Routers :: RV220W Max DHCP Users (Max Connections) Per Vlan

Nov 19, 2011

We assign (reserve by MAC actually) static IPs to all of our devices.  Over time we have gotten rid of some devices but haven't begun (or finished really) re-using the old IPs.  On our WRVS4400N v2 routers we are able to set the max number of DHCP users per Vlan.  This prevents unauthorized devices trying to connect to our LAN.For example.  I set the range from 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.103.  IPs 100, 101, and 103 are in use (reserved via MAC address).  We set max number of DHCP users to 3.  This prevents someone from gaining access to 192.168.1.102.  Does this make sense?  Or at least this was the initial goal and it tested out successfully back when we implemented it.

How can I do the same for with the RV220W?  I can set the range, assign static IPs (reserve IPs by MAC address), but can't keep others from gaining accessing to our LAN via the unused IPs (not assigned a static IP).My initial thought was to create static IPs (for the unused IPs) using dummy MAC addresses.  I'm sure there is a much better way of accomplishing what I am trying to do.

Cisco Routers :: SRP527W Requirement To Run Split Tunneling For VPN Users

Apr 28, 2012

I've just deployed a SRP527W that I've had lying around for a while.Everything on the unit runs as well as can be expected, however I have a requirement to run split tunneling for VPN users.

Currently the only route that the VPN client receives is a default route. I noticed that on site to site VPN's and GRE tunnels you can specify secured routes, however I can't find anything that relates to the VPN remote users. This can be done on IOS without a problem but would be nice for the SRP.

I'm running the latest firmware 1.01.26, so if I haven't overlooked something would this be likely for a future release?
