I've just set up an old netbook as a secure ftp server on my network. As part of the process I locked the server host IP by making the lease permanent in the DHCP/Address Reservation page of the routers web GUI.However I later noticed the MAC binding page which seems to achieve the same thing (lock an IP address to a specific adapter). I was wondering what the practical differences between the two techniques are? i.e is it better to use binding than reservation?
I have the gut feeling that binding is more robust as I'm not sure what happens to a reservation if the specified host device is removed and then the router rebooted, is the address released back to the pool of available addresses? Binding feels like that address will never be made available to another device even if that device is no longer present, or is that completely wrong? Also does the binding survive a router reboot?

I recently bought an new router TP-LINK TL-WR842ND. After configuring it I connected it via an cable connection to my PS3. The Internet connection works correct and I'm able to use all network feature on my console.
Then I connected a USB Hard Drive to it USB port and I enabled Media Server feature on the router. I have done steps described here url... but with no results. My PS3 sees the Media Server, but when I open it it shows no files.

The wireless drops out on my router every 1 or 2 days. I checked the LED on the router and it goes off when this occurs.I have attempted to turn WiFi back on using the 'on/off' button on the rear but it still won't work. The only remedy is to pull the power plug for a few moments and plug it back in.

I'm having a problem as my PS3 keeps showing up as UPnP not available even though it is turned on in the router menu. What can be the cause? I want to say there is something wrong with the PS3 and not the router.

My normal FTP download speed is 1-2 GB/Sec but downloading from the routers USB port only gives 200KB/Sec. How to improve the server speed? Another question: How many users can log in/download at the same time?

Everything seems so good until I setting up the printer server. Resources CD contains the "USB Print Service Client Setup" but the User Guide said that I have to install "TP-LINK USB Printer Controller Setup". First, I tried to install "USB Print Service Client Setup", nothing change but a small icon in taskbar allow me to start and stop service, no dialog box said me how to install printer driver. I look in tp-link website and get "TP-LINK USB Printer Controller Setup", install it but it can not detect my printer. What should I do now because I cannot uninstall "USB Print Service Client Setup"?

I am trying to set up a VPN access to the office Windows network by setting the pptp options in the WAN area of the networks settings.
I have entered the public IP address of the office network and also the username and password required by the system. When clicking on the connect button the router attempts to connect but then returns a "disconnected" message.

Philips support says it has to do with the router, firewall or something. Not much good from them. But I dont know anything about firewalls or anything, all I know is that my wireless internet works fine and that the TV is linked with the router but doesn't access internet. Streaming from pc to tv works fine though

I can access the USB storage via FTP, but I wanted to access files using a Windows Explorer format. Also, anyone access the Media share ? Manual tells you how to setup the USB functions but not how to access from a PC.

all my systems are configured under "IP & MAC Binding". Binding is activated globally and all check marks for every ID are set. After i finished my configurations, the "ARP List" status shows, that everything is bound - so far everything is great. The problem appears after a router reboot or after shutting the router down and powering it on again. The "ARP List" then shows only a few of my IDs and their status is unbound. I need to go back to the "Binding Settings" and hit "Save" - after that all my IDs appear in the ARP-List and everything is OK again.
Ever since I updated my firmware to 1.01 my web interface for the network settings screen has been random. Somtimes it shows a DHCP reservation list, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes there are reservations, sometimes there are selectable radio buttons. I guess I'm just trying to figure out if this is a firmware issue or not. Ever since I updated the firmware it has been flakey.... But I was having issues with other stuff before that. When there are no reservations, sometimes i can't even select any computers because there aren't any in the drop down, when all of my hardware is online?
I have a DIR-615 Rev. A1, and i'm trying to set up a DCHP reservation. Whenever I try, I get an error saying my MAC address must start with 00. I'm running Firmware 1.10.

I set up my router and it does not get a WAN IP.The PPPoE user/pw ist 100% correct but in the "status field" it always says: "connecting" and i can't get an IP.The router is connected with the modem via RJ45 cabel that was in the box.My PC has no problem getting to the internet with direct modem communication (pppoe).
I am currently running a TL-WR851ND Wifi Router whith the latest build 3.13.27 Build 121101 Rel.38183n() published last November 2012. Now is there any new firmware?

Just purchased the WR940N to use as a wireless bridge. I expected to be able to have the router join my wireless network, and provide Ethernet connectivity to 4 devices behind it. But I'm missing something in the configuration. I can get it on the wireless network, and manage it via the wireless network. But devices plugged into the Ethernet cannot get out to the Internet. Basically, I have a 192.168.1.x network, and the router is node 192.168.1.3 on the wireless network. I've turned off the firewall and DHCP on the router. The Ethernet devices behind it get an address from my network, but the router inserts its own address in as the default gateway, and my Ethernet devices do not have a route to my 192.168.1.x network, despite having an address on it.
I tried to connect a WD MyBook Essential 3tb hdd NTFS, but it never recognized it. Of course, I connected it with the external power supply. With a 15gb pendrive FAT32 it works OK.

I have a machine called 'survtest' on my lan with a permanent ip addr of 192.168.0.112. I can't ping that host by name from any other machine on the lan, although I can ping the ip address. Not only that but this machine appears in the DHCP client list within the router with its name 'survtest' and correct IP addr.
There is another machine on the lan called 'bsd' that also has a permanent IP addr of 192.168.0.110. It can be pinged by name from any other machine on the lan. However it does not show up in the DHCP client list at all.
Neither of these machines can be pinged by name from within the tplink admin diagnostic screen.

I recently bought a wireless N router (TL-WR841ND). I could connect my laptop to internet using the router but the problem is whenever I try to connect my phone to the wireless network, it goes on and off. It'll be on for a few minutes and then it is off and so on. By the way, the phone says you're still connected to the router but actually there is no real internet connection. But anyway, my laptop is connected to internet anyways!
I am living in a dormitory. And the website of the ISP is url... which provides dynamic IP. I have already tried different LAN IP adresses.I have already tried MAC Clone for WAN but nothing changes.I'm in a dormitory, there is also other routers here, could it because of conflicts with the other routers? I just got one of these to replace my old wrt54g. Seems to me a lot of people are flashing theirs with dd-wrt or openwrt. I was wondering why exactly. Unlike the old wrt54g, the tp-link stock firmware supports a lot of features in my view, especially the so wanted QOS. Do the CFW give the wr1043nd more stability or maybe better performance? Or is it about features? What features a CFW would add to the stock fw?

My house has thick internal walls, so WiFi does not propagate easily. I am fortunate to have FTTP. Therefore I have the following setup: At one end of the house there is a Genexis HRG1000 Fibre Optic Modem / Router with WiFi and 4 ethernet ports. One of its ethernet ports links to a Devolo 200Mb homeplug and there is a matching homeplug at the other end of the house which is linked to a WR1043ND. We have tried two configurations each with various settings. If we link into the WAN port it creates a separate network which cannot be seen from the fibre modem end (since the 196.168.1.n addresses are non-routing) and although this works, we cannot stream / transfer files from the PC (connected to the fibre modem by ethernet) to the smart TV connected to the WR1043ND. The TV can "see" the internet and things like iPlayer work. Various other gadgets can connect either by ethernet or WiFi and get successful internet access. Alternatively If we link into one of the LAN ports, AND disable both the DNS service and the DHCP server in the WR1043ND it all appears as one network, but although it is disabled, all the gadgets and computers try to use the DNS in the WR1043ND rather than that in the fibre modem and consequently there is no internet connectivity. We have tried several combinations of fixed and dynamic IP addresses, rebooting the WR1043ND and the PC etc. but nothing seems to work. What does work is giving both WiFi routers the same SID and password so that moving from one part of the house to another with, say, a smart phone transfers what connectivity there is seamlessly.
