Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5515-X - After Upgrade From 8.6 To 9.1 No Ping?

Apr 21, 2013

I've got a little problem with my ASA 5515-X after upgrade from version 8.6 to 9.1.

I've got two 5515-X in A/S-mode and upgraded both as described on cisco's website (first standby-unit, failover, etc.). Everything worked just fine except pinging the ASA-interfaces themselfes. Before upgrade it was possible to ping from any subnet to the internal interface, but now it's not. If I'm on the router next to the ASA I'm able to ping, but every ping from behind that router fails. The ICMP-packets get into the ASA (counter on ACL raises up), but no reply is getting into the source.

The configuration fir ICMP was not changed and says "permit 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0" for any ICMP on the internal interface. The router betwenn my subnet and the ASA has no ACL installed and - as said above - the ICMP gets obviously to the ASA but doesn't come back!?

Cisco Firewall :: ASA5510 - Cannot Ping Inside Over VPN After Upgrade

Jan 16, 2012

We currently have a central hub using an ASA5510 and then a few site-to-site VPN connections to our support staff homes. The devices at the homes are Cisco routers. We were running version 8.25 on the ASA and all was working fine. We recently upgraded to version 8.42 and although all the functionality of the network is ok and it does what it should, our support staff cannot ping, ASDM or telnet to the ASA inside interface anymore whereas they could before the upgrade. The home VPNs all run on a 10.30 subnet (i.e. 10.30.1.x, 10.30.2.x etc etc). I can post our config (security edited of course), but it is quite a big config. The command management-access inside is specified and the 10.30.0.0/16 subnet is permitted to ASDM and Telnet. Are there any extra things that have to be done in version 8.42 to get this to work as the support staff do have to access the firewall for configuration purposes. At the moment, they have to telnet to one of the routers on the local LAN and then Telnet to the firewall from there.Prior to the upgrade, they were all able to ping the inside ASA interface and also telnet and HTTPS to it from their PCs at home. Now they cannot and the only change made was an upgrade to 8.42. Immediately after the upgrade none of them can ping the interface anymore and it seems it can only be accessed from the local LAN. I cannot find any access-lists that might be blocking the packets so can only assume it's something in the way 8.42 works.

Before upgrading to 8.4(4)1 I was able to ping our inside interface accross the VPN.  Now I cannot.  Because ping is not working, my SNMP server thinks that the device is offline however I know the VPN tunnel is still up and the remote branch office is working fine.  Here is the config of the branch office ASA 5505 in question. How to get icmp working again?

Cisco Firewall :: Migrating Netscreen Firewall To ASA 5515 Version 8.6?

Mar 5, 2013

I am currently migrating a netscreen firewall to a asa 5515 version 8.6 The issue is setting up the management connectivity.

basically the management IP of the cisco asa is not advertised. But, we want to route a management IP through the management interface to interface Gi0/2.

so IP of management interface is say - 216.10.100.10. and the IP of the inside interface is say - 198.1.1.10/24 on our router we have a static route sending 198.1.1.0/24 to next hop of 216.10.100.10 (management interface of cisco asa).

On the Cisco ASA can I send the traffic to the inside interface and manage the firewall via ssh that way?

Right now my issue was when I use the existing NAT configured to our router into firewall, it seems that the translation was not successful actually I used Dynamic NAT. When I use the Dynamic PAT(Hide) all users are able to translated to the said public IP's. I know that PAT is Port address translation but when I use static nat for specific server. The Static NAT was not able to translated. Any conflict whit PAT to Static NAT?

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5515 - Two Interfaces Cannot Be In Same Subnet

Dec 5, 2012

I am working on translating configuration from a firewall named Joe box to ASA 5515. On Joe box, it has 5 continuous public IP addresses (xx.xx.xx.73 -77/29), first one as interface IP and others as alias, on the Internet-facing interface. I need to configure ASA 5515 in the same way, however it seems not simple.

- The way to configure sub interfaces on 5515 is by configuring V LAN.
- The interface can hold xx.xx.xx.73/29 without a problem.
- The first sub interface can have IP address xx.xx.xx.74 however with different mask(/16), as it doesn’t allow /29.
- The second sub interface doesn’t allow to enter IP xx.xx.xx.75, saying "Failed to apply IP address to interface GigabitEthernet0.x, as the network overlaps with interface GigabitEthernet0. Two interfaces cannot be in the same sub net."

Cisco Firewall :: 5515 - Way To Rate-limit By IP Address?

Jun 3, 2013

Worried about denial-of-service attacks. They have 11 vm's that share a connection and want to set it up so that there is a maximum amount of traffic allowed to hit each vm, so if there is a DDoS attack it will only affect that one VM instead of all the VM's on the same connection.

What is the best way to go about this from the ASA? This is behind a 5515 with asa code version 8.6. Is there a way to rate-limit by ip address?

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5515-X Route With Branch Locations?

Apr 17, 2013

We installed a new ASA 5515 about a month ago for the corporate office we also have 40 branch locations that feedback VOIP, camera, and Citrix to the corp location.  Each of the branch locations have a separate DSL connection with a local provider and all of them are dynamic IP addresses.

The problem I have is that I cannot figure out a access rule to make the voip traffic work 100% of the time what ends up happening is five or six random locations change IP address's every day and I could not figure out how to create a access rule for that so I create a static route with that dynamic IP and then it will change a week or so later.  That's a horrible security risk and a lot of manual work.

Cisco Firewall :: 5515-X Management Access To Transparent Multi-mode Security Contexts

Jan 23, 2013

I have setup a 5515-X in transparent multi-mode and setup 5 security contexts with inside and outside ports, one admin and 4 others. The problem I have run into is setting up a management IP for each context. On one of my other transparent firewalls in production we were able to apply an IP to the security context (not interface) however the new firewall is running the latest software and this same functionality is not available. The only options for IP in context mode is IP AUDIT. So my next plan was to create sub-interfaces of the management interface and assign one to each context however the 5515-x does not allow sub-interfaces on the management interface. How I setup a management IP on each context?

Another interesting thing i read is that the managment IP assigned to a context  (if i could figure out how to set it up), has to be in the same subnet as the data interface which if fine but it also says that the management interface should not be connected to the same switch as the data interface because of MAC address table update issues, meaning that i could not use a sub-interface of one of the already configured context ports.

Cisco Wireless :: 2x WLC4404 After Upgrade Some APs Can Only Ping One WLC

Jan 9, 2012

i have 2x WLC4404 they are in the same mobilitygroup and worked since a long time. Three days ago, ill upgraded one of them from 6.0.199.4 to 6.0.202.0. I have nearly 90 APs (1231,1242, different models)

The upgrade was successfull and i moved the APs from WLCA (6.0.199.4) to WLCB (6.0.202.0) almost all APs worked fine without 6 of them. This 6 APs cannot ping the AP-Manager-Interface from WLCB. But they can Ping the Router in this vlan, WLCA-AP-Manager and all APs in this subnet. They only cant get to the AP-Manager-interface from WLCB. Ping to Managementinterface of WLCB is also ok. Management and AP Manager are in different subnets. All APs and the AP-Manager-Interfaces from WLCA+WLCB are in the same subnet.

Switchportconfig and routing are ok. ive resetet the APs to default, checked switchport config, resetet switchport, power down ap for a while. ive tried many things, but nothing worked.I ever only can ping AP-Manager from WLCA, but not WLCB (again same subnet, and about 80 other APs work fine)
If i install a new AP on the same switchport, it works fine, without any issues. when i than unplug the "newAP" from this switchport and again connect the "oldAP" it can ping WLCA+WLCB and anything is fine.

Now i have the next and bigger problem nearly 15 of the APs that worked fine after upgrading, for now 3days+. Now they cannot ping the WLCB-AP-Manager-int too. And they dont failover to the WLCA with (6.0.199.4), i can reboot but they ever try to connect to WLCB. But they know both controllers.I only can get them to WLCA via ssh: capwap ap primary-base WLCAsname WLCAsmanagementIP..why the APs dont fail over if they dont reach WLCBsAP-Managerinterface?why i cannot ping WLCBs AP-Mana-Int from some APs.

Cisco Wireless :: 5508 - Mobility Ping And SSH Errors After Upgrade To 7.2.110.0

Aug 7, 2012

After upgrading my 5508s to 7.2.110.0, they are reporting mobility data path errors to one of my WiSMs running 7.0.235.0.

I get these messages on the 5508s reporting that it can't send a ping to the affected WiSM:

*ethoipSocketTask: Aug 08 21:15:41.175: %ETHOIP-3-PKT_RECV_ERROR: ethoip.c:341 ethoipSocketTask: ethoipRecvPkt returned error

But maybe there is another clue because I also see in the same log these errors referencing the same WiSM:

*bcastReceiveTask: Aug 08 21:15:45.310: %LOG-1-Q_IND: mm_dir.c:1969 Failed to recreate the SSH Rule for <ip address>.
*mmSSHPeerRegister: Aug 08 21:15:44.829: %MM-1-SSHRULE_CREATE_FAILED: mm_dir.c:1969 Failed to recreate the SSH Rule for <ip address>.

Why is the controller trying to SSH to another controller?  Was some SSH related feature added to 7.2 that has been accidentally enabled?
