Cisco Firewall :: 5505 - Ping And SNMP Broken After 8.4(4)1 Upgrade?
Sep 19, 2012
Before upgrading to 8.4(4)1 I was able to ping our inside interface accross the VPN. Now I cannot. Because ping is not working, my SNMP server thinks that the device is offline however I know the VPN tunnel is still up and the remote branch office is working fine. Here is the config of the branch office ASA 5505 in question. How to get icmp working again?

How I can actively monitor the interfaces and overall status of 2 x ASA 5500s in an Active/Standby configuration?
I can setup monitoring of the interfaces on the Active member but I'm not sure how to manage the Standby member?

I am trying to monitor my ASA 5505. This asa is connect via a ip-sec tunnel to our network. I have no problems with snmp monitoring devices behind the ASA, but when trying to monitor the asa itself I do not get a SNMP response.

I've got a little problem with my ASA 5515-X after upgrade from version 8.6 to 9.1.
I've got two 5515-X in A/S-mode and upgraded both as described on cisco's website (first standby-unit, failover, etc.). Everything worked just fine except pinging the ASA-interfaces themselfes. Before upgrade it was possible to ping from any subnet to the internal interface, but now it's not. If I'm on the router next to the ASA I'm able to ping, but every ping from behind that router fails. The ICMP-packets get into the ASA (counter on ACL raises up), but no reply is getting into the source.
The configuration fir ICMP was not changed and says "permit 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0" for any ICMP on the internal interface. The router betwenn my subnet and the ASA has no ACL installed and - as said above - the ICMP gets obviously to the ASA but doesn't come back!?

I have a TAC case open, but it doesn't seem to be making any progress.I upgraded my 5508 controller from 7.2.111.3 up to 7.4.100.0..Most of my APs are fine. 3500s, 1100s etc.except for 602i APs. The APs associate, they update software etc, but they won't broadcast the WLAN.An interesting thing, on the 602 AP, in the log, I see this:*Mar 06 15:08:12.667: SSID remote, WLAN Profile Name: RemoteOEAP, added to the slot[0], disabled..So the AP is definately talking to the WLC and being pushed the correct WLAN profile. On the controller, the AP shows the the Admin status of the radios is showing DOWN, but the Admin status on the AP itself shows UP
I've done a factory reset on the APs to no avail. I have a 2504 WLC as well that i'm in the process of implementing in a DMZ specificially for these APs, and for testing purposes, I associated the 602 Ap to that WLC as well. This one is running 7.4.100.0 too, same results. It would appear to be a problem with this version of software?

We currently have a central hub using an ASA5510 and then a few site-to-site VPN connections to our support staff homes. The devices at the homes are Cisco routers. We were running version 8.25 on the ASA and all was working fine. We recently upgraded to version 8.42 and although all the functionality of the network is ok and it does what it should, our support staff cannot ping, ASDM or telnet to the ASA inside interface anymore whereas they could before the upgrade. The home VPNs all run on a 10.30 subnet (i.e. 10.30.1.x, 10.30.2.x etc etc). I can post our config (security edited of course), but it is quite a big config. The command management-access inside is specified and the 10.30.0.0/16 subnet is permitted to ASDM and Telnet. Are there any extra things that have to be done in version 8.42 to get this to work as the support staff do have to access the firewall for configuration purposes. At the moment, they have to telnet to one of the routers on the local LAN and then Telnet to the firewall from there.Prior to the upgrade, they were all able to ping the inside ASA interface and also telnet and HTTPS to it from their PCs at home. Now they cannot and the only change made was an upgrade to 8.42. Immediately after the upgrade none of them can ping the interface anymore and it seems it can only be accessed from the local LAN. I cannot find any access-lists that might be blocking the packets so can only assume it's something in the way 8.42 works.

I'd like to see some REAL LIFE comparisons of ASA firewall throughput (a bit like this one for ISR G2 Routers - [URL].
The reason I ask is that I recently upgraded a firewall from an ASA5505 to an ASA5520 on a small network where the only outside connectivity was a single 10meg Internet circuit with an IPSEC VPN (not landed on the firewall but on a router) to another site.
When I swapped out the firewall the users noticed a big improvement. The firewall is not doing anything out of the ordinary - no IPS or VPN, just standard state full inspection.

We want to use an ASA as a pure routing device. Our network has several internal subnets (10.1.x.0/24), and we want to be able to reach them from outside and to allow access between them.
We have a defined a VLAN for each subnet range with the same security-level, added it to an Ethernet port and made the Ethernet that acts as outside as a trunk, and defined it as the global routing.
We cannot ping any of the subnet IPs defined in the ASA from outside nor we can ping it from the internal IP addresses.

I am trying to configure Nat on a clean ASA 5505, but can't get it to work. I ran the commands below. On the ASA I can ping the internet and inside vlan ip. On my laptop I can ping the ASA inside vlan ip, but I can't ping the outside vlan ip. From another network I can ping the ASA outside public ip. Is there an access-list that denies inside from accessing outside?
I am running version 8.4(3) and I erased the existing configuration.
ASA(config)# interface vlan 1
ASA(config-if)# ip address 10.0.0.1 255.255.255.0
ASA(config-if)# nameif inside

I have been tasked with replacing our company eSoft router with a Cisco ASA 5505 with the upgraded security license. I have been working on the configuration for a couple of weeks now, after reading hundreds of forum posts, watching youtube videos, and endless google searching, and despite my best efforts I am still having an issue I can’t figure out.
I have a couple of subnets, that when the ASA is connected, I cannot ping, nor can they get to the internet or our Exchange server. At this point I’m not sure if it’s an access rule issue, NAT issue, or DNS issue.
Here is the network layout:
ASA: 192.168.0.2 (Primary Gateway)
192.168.0.0 (Primary facility, ASA is the gateway)
192.168.2.0 (Second facility, connected via Verizon point-to-point)
192.168.3.0 (Third facility, connected via Verizon point-to-point)

I am trying to troubleshoot an ASA5505 connectivity issue. My initial tests are to ping the Internet router from the ASA This is failing and also a sh arp only shows internal addresses.
I have to go to site to check this out to confirm the following.
1: Should I be able to ping the Internet router from the ASA?
2: Do I need to permit any icmp to do this?
3: Should a sh arp show the address of the internet router?
I tried entering the command permit icmp any outside
However I got the error route already exists 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0

I have been delaying an upgrade past 8.2.5 because it is stable and I didnt feel like learning a new way of doing NAT because of the way the code was changed. What is forcing me to go down this path is that I need to be able to let protocol 41 pass through the firewall which doesnt work in 8.2.5 and is what is making me look at 8.3 or 8.4
I know that I will have to install a memory upgrade on both my lab 5505's before I can install the upgraded binary. Will be ordering that in the next few days.
Any suggestions on going to 8.3 or 8.4 based on the reason for the upgrade ? I had been told by TAC to stay away from 8.3 but never got a good reason for that. My lab config (i.e. home ASA) is pretty straight forward (no SSL or IPSEC config), so I would hope it would go fairly smooth. I had heard a lot of horror stories early on but wanted to see how things had been going for everyone with the later versions of code.

I configured a new Asa 5505 with Ios 8.44-1-k8.bin and when I installed the Asa the client's after about 1 hour were unable to ping or map drives to the Asa. I got the following error,%ASA-2-106007: Deny inbound UDP from XXXX to XXXX due to DNS Query. I added the command same-security-traffic permit intra-interface they were then able to ping the server and connect to the Internet, but still unable to map drives i could see the connections from the Pc's to the server in a show conn with was tcp port 445 with Saa? I reverted back to Ios 8.25 and everything works.

I have been browsing the forum and the support notes for a couple of hours and haven't found a definitive answer to my question. Our ASA is on the subject versions. I watched a video on YouTube stating that upgrading the ASA is easiest if you upgrade ASDM, then the ASA. Problem is, I don't think I can upgrade ASDM first because I don't see a version that is compatible with ASA 7.2.x and 8.0.x.

1. if i upgrade, did it change any of my present configurations ?
2. is there any name change or property changes for VLAN's or VPN's
3. did it affect the firewall functions
4. If anything goes wrong, can i restore it in to my old state using my previous dump.

I have successifuly upgraded ASA and ASDM image. My question is how to make it to boot it as default when you do a factory reset of the device. For the ASA image I found out that it will boot the first image it founds on the flash, so I left only the latest bin file and if I do factory reset it boot the latest. But for ASDM it still boots the old one, because there is no "asdm image disk0:/asdm-645.bin" command in the config. I`m not sure how, because I only left the new ASDM bin image. Is there any variable or something that still points to old asdm image?
My ASA version is 8.4(2) and ASDM 6.4(5). The old one was ASA 8.2 and ASDM 6.3.

I have, what I believe to be, a simple issue - I must be missing something. Site to Site VPN with Cisco ASA's. VPN is up, and remote hosts can ping the inside int of ASA (10.51.253.209). There is a PC (10.51.253.210) plugged into e0/1.
I know the PC is configured correctly with Windows firewall tuned off. The PC cannot get to the ouside world, and the ASA cannot ping 10.51.253.210.
I have seen this before, and I deleted VLAN 1, recreated it, and I could ping the local host without issue. Basically, the VPN is up and running but PC 10.51.253.210 cannot get out
