Cisco Firewall :: ASA5520 Individual Ports Versus Ranges
May 27, 2013
Best practices for an ASA5520. I'm currently running a pair of these as internal firewall for my organization, and have about 750 rules dictating traffic. A lot of the rules are for individual ports to specific server(s), some of them having 50+ ports opened. For example, Exchange has about 115 ports opened right now, anywhere from port 25 to 55000.
My question is that would it be better (faster, less strain on the ASA) to open a port range, (ie 52000-55000) or would the individual ports (ie: 52112, 52336, 52698,53441,53495, etc...) be ok?Obviously the individual ports are much more granular for security, but I don't want to take that into consideration now. Just strictly individual ports vs ranges.

A client is thinking of putting in a srp527w. they get assigned a static ip on the adsl interface (165.228.204.x), and then have been assigned another block(203.39.183.x/29).how can i have it so that i am able to forward individual ports from the external ip's, to selected internal ip's.

Our firewall expert has gone off on long term illness leave and I am trying to pick up the pieces :-(
We have an ASA 5520 (local office) talking to another ASA (remote office) via a VPN Tunnel.
My 1st problem is that I cannot ping from my inside network (local) to the outside interface of my remote ASA.
My 2nd is that I have debug enabled on my rules but am not logging anything.

Alright, well I have a Cisco 891w router and have just about everything up and ready to deploy. I'm primarily using Cisco CP 2.4 to provision the router with minor tweaks being done in the CLI. I want to set up a filter to allow access to roughly 20 websites for the majority of my network which is all on the same VLAN. The ip ranges are x.x.x.10 - x.x.x.169 which I have set into a Network Object group called limitac. The second group ranges at x.x.x.170 - x.x.x.199 and is called allowac. I have set up DHCP bindings for all the devices that will connect to the network but I want to set up a web filter for only the first group. I cannot seem to find anything in the Cisco CP manual or the IOS manual for setting up filtering for a range of IPs only. Primarily there are a few computers that need full access to the web while the others should only have access to the sites I set up in the filter.

I am wondering if this is possible. We have multiple internet connections with fixed IP's coming into the office. We'd like to use one for FTP backup and another to service our websites. From what i have read a 5510 doesn't do policy based routing, but we'd like to configure our ftp server to use one of the internet pipes and our webserver to use another internet pipe. Is that possible?
We'd have two outside fixed IP interfaces and two internal interfaces. I could then use one of the internal interfaces for the web server and the other for the FTP server. consequently if the internal web server and FTP server use the fixed IP"s corresponding DNS server wouldn't that effectively route all FTP traffic out one interface and all web traffic out the other?
Then the FTP traffic would be NAT'ed to an internal interface and the HTTP & HTTPS traffic would be NAT'ed to a separate internal interface.
Then if each of the internal servers used the corresponding internal NIC on the ASA as it's gateway and the fixed IP's that correspond to the external DNS server, then it would affectively only use that gatway out for traffic? Would that work? Does it should route traffic out those pipes correct? Will the asa support two different next hop routers for the two different interfaces?

I’ve been trying to figure out this for quite a while. I have a range of public IP addresses directly assigned on my dmz servers. The inside interface of ASA 5510 has one of those public IP addresses assigned (the default gateway for all dmz servers). Now I have a new range of public IPs that I also want to directly assign to new dmz servers. My goal is to have two distinct public IP ranges on dmz that should communicate between them. The inside ASA interface should be the default gateway for both networks.

We recently had a Port Scan done on our external IP Addresses. One of those IP Addresses scanned was our Concentrator 3000. The report came back with the following TCP ports being open on the Concentrator 3000 - 80, 443, 1723, 10000, 10001, 10002, 10003, 10004, and 10009. I am unsure if it is necessary to have any or all of these open. The Concentrator 3000 is in front of our ASA5520.

We were having a discussion of ios firewall vs. asa for smaller clients(less than 50). On using ios firewall(zbf or cbac)and an asa 5505/5510. One of the arguments brought up on using ios firewall on the router is that a router will do an ip sla failover. I have configured a number of isr's for this and i know it works good.

We have an ASA 5505. 5505 comes with two default vlans 1&2 with each of them marked as inside & outside respectively. My query is , if i do not want to use vlans on 5505 and only want to use the Ethernet ports as pure physical layer 3 ports, is it possible?i.e. i want to assign a layer 3 ip address on eth0/0 and eth0/1 and make them as the inside & outside interfaces rather than vlans. is it possible to do away with vlans in 5505 & will it work otherwise?

Is there a way to associate spare firewall ports with another port that is being used..For example...int gi 0/2 is being used currently for my web dmz. Its ip is 192.168.10.1..Is there a way for me to associate gi 0/3 with the same layer 2 as gi 0/2 ?
In my webdmz I use 2 ACE 4710 proxys in FT mode. I used a layer 2 switch to connect firewall and proxys together.
I would like to eliminate this switch if possible..and connect both 4710's (layer 2) direct to firewall. If I could make gi0/2 - 4 part of the same vlan, then I would be good to go.

we are running 8.4(2) on the asa with the below configuration we basically have a static for .7 on .25 and a nat for .7 for port direction with manual nat that takes precedense over auto nat within the object group am I correct that I dontneed the dynamic statement and that its redundant?
-object network obj-10.X.0.25-02host 10.X.0.25
-object network obj-10.X.0.25nat (any,INSIDE) static X.X.X.7 dns

I am using a Cisco E4200 router today but I am moving to a ASA5505. I have a device that sets up a VPN tunnel that I want to put in my DMZ. It's called the ATT Gateway. I have attached the diagram. When I use a Cisco E4200 all I do is put the outside private ip address of 192.168.0.99 of the ATT Gateway into the DMZ of the E4200 and the VPN tunnel of the ATT Gateway comes right up. I cannot configure the DMZ to do the same with the ASA. I also need to have the laptop behind the gateway access the printers in the inside network.

I've been asked to deploy an ASA in Transparent Mode because of concerns of putting another layer 3 hop between PE and CE routers running BGP.
Is there some problem with allowing BGP to flow freely through an ASA the is also terminating site to site and remote access vpn tunnels?
I just don't see the need for Transparent Mode here and you cannot have a standard DMZ setup with Transparent Mode: you have to use bridge groups to provide for multiple interfaces on the ASA and then have an external router route between those bridge groups.
what I'm missing here as to why Transparent Mode is needed (not needed)
ASA is 5512

I have two asa 5520 firewalls. one at my primary data center connected to our production Internet feed, and one at my fail over data center connected to a backup internet feed. I was wondering if there was an easy way to keep the firewall rules in sync between the two firewalls. We have failover with our isp that will move our public facing address block from our primary site to our dr site in the event of a disaster so the ip addresses will not change if we were to have to fail over to the DR site. currently i just have to do any changes that i make on the fail over server but would like a way to at least simi-automat this if not fully automat this so that i can eliminate the possibility of human error of a change happening at primary but never getting don at DR.

I have a asa5520 with five Internet IP.One for the internet interface and the others are static maped to dmz hosts. It runs rightly until yesterday. Now it will lose the connection to the gateway many times everyday and the dmz hosts can not connect to internet any time. configuration(simplified):
!
interface GigabitEthernet0/0
nameif internet
security-level 0
[Code]....
I called ISP to check, when ISP clear their router's ARP, the asa will lose the connection at the same time and then the ISP's router couldn't learn the ASA's MAC. After I 'clear arp' manually,The ISP's router can learn the ASA's MAC and the connection recovered, but the DMZ's cann't access internet still (of course,There is no problem between DMZ and ASA ,I ping the internet gateway from DMZ host and can not get any reply.).

We have 2 x ASA5520 and I upgraded this to 8.2.2 last year, I see 8.2.5 and now 8.4 is out. If we are having no issues, is it best just to leave it as it is? I can see a couple of features I may find useful in 8.2.5, but 8.4 seems like a huge jump and a risky one too.

I am trying to introduce an ASA5520 to my network based on the following diagram: ISP Internet ------> ASA5520 ------- > Cisco Router ------> LAN. The problem is I cannot ping the ASA from the LAN. I can ping it from inside the router. I already allow ICMP within ASA. If i remove the cisco router and replace it by a swich, I can ping the ASA with NO problem.

We have 2 firewalls on PIX facing the Internet and connected to interface e1 (behind it) an ASA version 8.3 Both the PIX (Firewall facing) and the ASA are on the same subnet.
By using Routing statements and statics I have been able to reroute specific traffic to the ASA5520 version 8.3 Now I need to inverse the 2 devices. The ASA5520 will be facing the Internet and the PIX will be behind it.Unfortunately the ASA5520 is refusing to route the traffic to the PIX. The access-lists are open accordingly and a NAT on the ASA has been created.

Get the following log message on secondary ASA console output when turning on the ASA failover function?
"Mate's service module (CSC SSM 6.6.1125.0) on slot 1 is different from mine (CSC SSM 6.6.1125.0)"
After that the secondary cannot join as a failover unit and shows in disabled status. We have the same model ASA & CSC module and each pair of them are in same firmware (CSC 6.6.1125.0 with ASA5520 8.4(4)1), when I shutdown both the csc modules, the ASA failover works fine.

I am using a squid proxy behind an ASA5520 firewall to collect the users to the internet. Squid is just necessary to log what is going on in order to find a quick solution when the internet slows down.
Considering that I have unlimited licenses and I would like to get rid of squid, I wonder if the ASA has some functionalities to track which websites are being used and how much traffic is generated. If there is not, I would like to know if Cisco offers a good product to replace Squid.

Any limits on the number of IPSec sessions an ASA5520 can support over a DSL connection?
Currently, as we increase the number of IPSec VPN tunnels, our LAN switches connected to the DSL/ASA start seeing CRC/input errors. Tried different LAN ports for both DSL/ASA connections - same reults (CRCs and errors). Swapped ASA for PC running 1 IPSEC w/HD video and no issues.
VPN connection bandwidth demand 50% of DSL capacity, so not exceeding DSL bandwidth. Errors get so bad that all VPN sessions drop - sometimes VPN sessions re-establish while other instances a DSL modem reboot is required.
cause of LAN switch connections seeing errors with 4+ VPN sessions established on ASA across a DSL Internet circuit?

I have a question about access-lists on ASA: (5520 running 8.4)Often I want to permit all traffic from networks behind an interface (let's say DMZ in this example) to Internet, but NOT to internal networks. Then I first configure a Deny from DMZ to all internal network and then a Permit to ANY. If I forget the first Deny I will allow all traffic also to my internal networks. Is it possible to configure an access-list that permit all traffic from a network to all networks that are reachable via a given interface? In this example: Permit all traffic from DMZ to all networks that are reachable via the Outside-interface? This should permit traffic to Internet and deny traffic to internal networks in one statement. If I specify the outside-interface as the destination only traffic to the interface itself will be allowed.
