New Laptop No / Slow Internet
Mar 17, 2013
I have a new Win7 Toshiba laptop here which can hardly connect to the internet. Sometimes, it cannot even see the router. When it can see the router and connect to the internet, speeds are so slow that most web pages cannot load (Google comes up, searches are slow, can't open any sites). The new laptop is attempting its connection through wireless. My Device Properties says I have an Atheros AR8152/8158 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.20). Wireless Network Connection Properties says I'm connecting using Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230. I'm sending and receiving millions of packets, getting great signal quality, and have 144.0 Mbps. IPv4 is connected but IPv6 is getting no internet. The router is a Linksys, though I don't know the model number.I am typing this on another laptop that is connecting via wireless, also a Toshiba. I have another laptop and desktop which can connect via wireless and three desktops which connect via ethernet cable. [code] I'm reasonably good with computers but step-by-step instructions don't hurt. How to get the internet working well on this new laptop.

I've gotten a Lenovo Laptop recently. As soon as I got it I went home and set it up. As soon as I got use to Windows * I went to Desktop and the following happened.I tried to go to Internet Explorer to try to search for a different browser and everything loaded up slow, the connection is 4 bars but it still is slow. It was a miracle I even got to download anything. After I got Google Chrome I decided to go on YouTube to test if it was slow as well. The videos need time to buffer even if on 240p. On my PC the internet loads fast, no need to buffer videos at all and the other webpages load fast too. I have a Ps3 here too, but it's YouTube app's videos load fast too, no need to buffer. I can play online with 4 bars and no problems at all. Why is the internet so slow on my laptop?

So recently got broadband in the new house, and the line got activated last night. All my housemates seem to be getting the internet fine on their laptops but I can't. When on wireless, the speed is VERY slow. Some pages, like google's home page can take 2 minutes to load and image heavy sites such as Youtube home page, with all their thumbnails will not load at all, except once in a while albeit without the images.

I have 3 laptops, an ipod and an Xbox connected wirelessly to my router. I have no troubles with either of them but one laptop which runs really slow through wi-fi. I have been reading on people with similar examples and here are some stuff I noticed.
1. The laptop is new and I ran it as a virus check with no viruses
2. I did notice two wifi adapters as follows. Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter and Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter #2. They both show that they are working properly and I have checked for updates.
3. My router is a Netgear DGN1000 modem/router. It is also updated on firmware.
4. I have the right password etc.I do however have my xbox set up as DMZ and ports forwarded on the static IP for my xbox

we have 3 laptops connected to our home network, 2 Gateways and my Sony Vaio. We have AT&T U-Verse and the 2 gateways get speeds of ~12Mb/s while I get speeds of less than 3Mb/s. I've searched countless forums but I can't seem to find the problem. We got U-verse installed in January and the internet on my laptop was on par with the other ones. But I went back to school and came back home for break and it's as slow as mollases.

I recently acquired a laptop from a friend, he was having problems with it and decided to just give it away and buy a new one, I took and it examined the problem, it is a HP Pavillion laptop running on Windows 7.When I booted it up it said "NO BOOTABLE DISK" or "NO BOOTDISK INSTALLED" or something of that nature.I realized that the harrdrive was fried so I bought a new harrdrive and installed it into the new laptop, reinstalled Windows 7 onto the laptop and installed all the required drivers.I don't understand why, my old laptop running on Windows XP, it runs fine and smoothly, pages open quick and downloads finishing fast and smoothly. But when it comes to the Windows 7 laptop, A 2mb file takes almost 30 mins just to download, web pages take forever to open up.

I have a year-old Sony Vaio laptop which connected to the internet without any problems on my BT Homehub connection. However, I recently moved in with my girlfriend who has a Virgin media connection and, although I can connect to it without problems, it is extremely slow (around 0.30 mbps) whereas my girlfriend's laptop is fine (9.74 mbps), we both have iPhones which are also fine therefore I'm pretty certain the problem lies with my laptop. I have tried updating the wireless card's drivers (windows tells me they are up to date) and I've also tried disabling my Norton 360 but it didn't make any difference.

I just bought an alienware M18x, and set it up a few days ago. all of the drivers are up to date. Yet my internet is still slow (about half the time). I run a speed test, and it says my download speed is 0 mbps for a few moments, then it skyrockets and averages out to about 8. The upload speed is more consistent, but only at 0.3 mbps. I have centurylink at up to 12, and they've told me that the connection itself is fine.

My Sony Vaio laptop is experiencing slow internet speed even though the signal level shows as excellent. This is only when using it upstairs, where it is normally used. In the same room as the router it is fine. This has only just starting happening and it was OK anywhere in the house until a couple of days ago. To make it even more confusing my wife's notebook and my iphone work fine on the network in the bedroom.

The issue is that one Dell laptop is experiencing slow or no internet connectivity at all using wireless. Sometimes 1 to 2 minutes to load a page, other times the dreaded 'not able to display webpage' message. It's fine using Ethernet. I have another laptop (same exact brand/model) and it has no problems. I also have a Macbook Pro and other Apple IOS devices (iPod/iPads) that are fine. Several Ethernet connected devices are fine as well. The laptop in question had no issues with my previoius Linksys devices, which are a BEFSR41/WAP55AG as well as a WRT-54GS v2. This one laptop was fine the first day or two on the EA4500 but something happened which is causing this issue. I had to add the WAP55AG back onto my network so my son is happy again, but my plan was to decommission the other devices. All of a sudden the wifi on my laptop has been really slow lately. I remember before I could stream 720p videos without any buffer on Youtube. Now I'm lucky if I can somewhat stream a 340p without the occasional stutters/buffers. Sometimes I would be getting 39 Mbps or 52 Mbps (if I'm really lucky) , but most of the times I would get either 26-19 Mbps. On all my other devices (iPod, Family Desktop, iPhone) the internet speed seems just fine as they can stream in 720p and browse without any network problems. Also I am upstairs with the router downstairs in the family room.
My results from Speedtest.net - 25 ms, 2.56 Mbps Download Speed, 0.38 Mbps Upload Speed.
This result is VERY UNSTABLE, sometimes I couldn't even get 1 Mbps download speed (more like 0.8). I would also have like 50 ms. I am running Windows 8 Pro with a Realtek RTL8188CE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC on a Toshiba Satellite Laptop.DHCP is enabled. IPv6 is not. I made sure everything was updated using Windows Update. And I'm only using the windows defender firewall which I made wasn't blocking anything by disabling it and seeing if it cleared up any problems - which it did not, the same thing happened.

I recently purchased a new HP ENVY dv6 laptop which runs on Windows 8. I've noticed a significant drop in wireless speed on my network compared to my previous laptop, a Sony VAIO, which runs on Windows Vista. I don't believe that it is my network's problem; when I ran Speedtests on my two laptops, side-by-side, the VAIO had a greater download speed. Both computers are also fully updated, including the drivers; the VAIO laptop is four years old, and the HP ENVY dv6 just came out of the factory two weeks ago.

The WRT54G is located upstairs in the game room. The entire house is also wired with Ethernet. I mean every single room except the nook. Well guess where my wife has her laptop set up, yup the nook. She wants wireless. And she insists on staying in the nook.
If I take the laptop in the living room (downstairs and closer to the router) It gets 12Mbs. If I take it upstairs near the router it gets 18Mbs. But in the nook (downstairs) it gets 2Mbs. My wired desktop is currently pulling 19Mbs. I have half a dozen WRT54G's stored in a closet. Should I setup a wrt54g as an AP or should I buy a WAP54G (ebay $20)? I have an Ethernet port in the living room, which is directly across from the nook. I tihnk If I had an AP there then problem would be solved.
Does the signal supposed to degrade that much when passing thru walls?

Earlier today Comcast came to our house and upgraded our internet from 12 MB/s to 22 mb/s speed. We have a larger house using wifi internet with 3 laptops (2 XP, 1 Win7).Our wifi has always slowed down speeds on the computers. Our laptops were generally getting 3-6 download speed via speedtest.net.Then when we plugged in directly we got full 12 mb/s.So we figured, hey lets upgrade our internet to get faster speeds around the house!Today we are doing speed tests with the new 22mb/s and only my dad's win-7 laptop is getting 21mb/s via wifi. Even when right next to the router the other 2 laptops only max out at 6mb/s and can not go any higher. When directly connected they get the full 22mb/s.
why is it that one computer gets full speed via wifi when the 2 XP computers do not? It really seems like the speed has a cap at 6.35mb/s download, never goes higher on the speed test.Currently using a Linksys WRT160N Router. When I check the DHCP Client Table it shows that all computers are connected via Wireless-G so it's not a connection type.Is there a specific setting on the XP computers that are capping speed?

My LAN speed is usually around 5100 via my SpeedTouch router ST585v6. When I am using my Laptop, an HP Pavilion dv6 running Windows 7 with an AMD quad Core cpu, not the fastest of computers!, I seem to get WIFi speeds as low as 1700 whilst at other times can get 5000. Laptop! Is the speed drop a "computer problem" or a router one? If I connect the Laptop to the LAN the speed will always be at about 5100. My desktop computer is connected to the LAN and has a speed of 5100.I have the usual security set on the Router.

ISP provides us with 20 mb/s download speed. Both Toshiba laptops used to be able to attain this but after reinstalling windows xp on this laptop, it can only achieve 8mb/s. The other laptop will get 20 mb/s whether connected wired or wireless. For the life of me cannot figure what has changed. I have installed all windows updates including SP3 and updated all drivers via Toshiba website. It uses the Intel 3945b/g network card and the router is a motorola sbg 6580.Connecting wired will achieve 20mb/s so it has something to do with the wireless setup.Have tried connecting to router with WPA, WPA2, and no encryption but makes no difference.Testing right beside the router or 30ft away makes no difference.Have uninstalled/reinstalled network card but made no difference

I have a Toshiba Laptop L10 which was running a bit slow, so I downloaded the AVG PCT Tuneup 2011 package and carried out the various recommended changes including de-fragmenting disc. Now I cannot access the internet via my router and Windows cannot repair the problem as it cannot complete "Renewing your IP address". I have followed advice on this site and implemented CMD re Winsock OK, but the second step "netsh int ip reset reset.log" is not accepted; it simply returns the cursor.

I just got a new Lenovo Ideapad y500 a few days ago, and the internet speed has been incredibly slow from the get-go. Loading images on pages takes way longer than it should, I can't watch streaming videos that last 4 minutes without it pausing to buffer every 5-10 seconds. It took about 20 minutes to download a 50mb file. My 4 year old laptop loads everything way faster, especially when downloading files. I did a ping test on both and everything was about the same, except I got a download speed of .75 mb/s on the new laptop, and between 12-17 mb/s on the old laptopI did a few ping tests, and this is what I got:Ping: 25 msDownload speed: .75 mbpsUpload speed: 4.10 mpbs.
And then I tried the same test with the laptop plugged directly in to the router with the ethernet cable and I got a ping of 20 + download speed of 25.12 mbps, and I tried loading a few youtube videos and they ran perfectly. Then I ran the test again over wifi, only this time I ran it sitting right next to the router. Still got download speeds of about 20 mbps. As soon as I got back to my room (which isn't that far from the router) the download speed dropped back to ~.80 and everything went back to loading slow again. The thing is, running the test from the exact same spot in my room on my old laptop, I still was able to get download speeds of around 18 mbps. My network card is an Intel Centrino Wireless N-2230 and the router is Linksys WRT150N wireless-n.I've tried downloading the wireless drivers from Lenovo, and it didn't change anything. So those are up to date. There were no firmware updates available for the router on Linksys' site

I use my personal laptop at work (an Inspiron E1505). To do so, I had to put it on the network at work. However, when I am home, my laptop runs extremely slow, sometimes taking several minutes just to open a simple program like the calculator. Web surfing is useless even with Road Runner. Any way to make this faster?
I go about removing the computer from the network and would that fix the issue or would I need to wipe the whole thing and start over?

Recently I bought a ASUS G Series G53SW-XN1 to replace my old laptop and it uses a Atheros AR9002WB-1NG wireless network adapter to connect to my network. On my older laptop I can get the full download speeds on my network of 500-600 kbs, but on my asus I can only acheive between 70-120 kbs. There should be little to no interference between me and my router and it sits only about 15 ft behind me.
My router is an old linksys wireless router which only transmits a B signal. I know wireless B is considered slow but it works perfectly fine for what I use it for and it works on my other laptop.
