Setting Up New Sub-network

I am trying to setup a new lab in an existing network. I have the following requirements: Some users should be able to connect to the servers from their home. i.e. over internet. All other users outside the lab should not be able to access it. I am thinking something like, creating a new subnet for the lab which can then be protected from the rest of the network through firewall settings. And VPN to allow access over the internet. Are there some better solutions or issues with my approach?

I run a certain program in my PC and I need to make its data available to an iPhone app.I would like to broadcast it over WIFI from the laptop.How can I set up a simple wifi network so the iPhone can connect as described?I was thinking of wireless router connected directly to the PC.

I'm a head of computing at a senior school and currently have the following predicament. All of the computers we have are quite rightly networked with certain restrictions on them. Now I have just purchased seven machines for my departments use alone. All other computers in classrooms are for general use and have to be usable by any teacher for any subject. The machines I have purchased are so we can install whatever hardware / software I need with no restrictions. These machines don't need network file shares or printer access,the only shared service they need is the schools internet connection.Originally I had a router plugged into a printer port and created wireless network in my room which gave us this functionality - full unrestricted internet access, could download exes and visit any site. However the network admin (and I understand why) didn't like this and asked me to remove it. So now I have some nice machines with no internet access. When I asked the network admin what we could do about this while keeping his networked machines safe, he said it would be a long process as we would have to buy in an entirely new internet connection.

I want to setup a VPN, probally more just for the experiance and to learn how to etc, but i also print remotely and view cameras remotely etc and i though it might be safer then port forwarding hundreds of different ports.First question, would it be better or safer to set it up in Windows XP or windows Server as i would have to purchase windows server. I have XP and windows 7. and, what exactly is a VPN. I have done some reading up, but was woundering how exacly i would for instance, remotely view my DVR (cameras) over a VPN. Also, i want the server to be a remote HDD to store and access all data remotely, Backing up etc. This i think VPN is more made for right?And, i will need a server (computer running at all times) to setup a VPN right? as where the router is always on and accessable. I can acheive this and i think this is what i need.So there it is, im new to this side of things done about all i can with the old router and looking at extending my knowledge. Also i wouldnt mind it being SAFE.

I want to set up VPN at home so my friends can access network shares on my LAN and stuff. I have used this tutorial:(url) ?v=1s5JxMG06L4&feature=related so users are set up, and port forwarding on router is done as well. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate, and VPN is set up on this machine. The issue is that my friends cannot connect to my VPN from another Windows machine. When they try to connect it is asking them for user and password but later on after authentication they receive error 720 which says connection could not be established. When I went to the network connections and then to the properties of VPN (incoming connections) it says no hardware capable of accepting calls is installed.

Network setup. This are its features:I have a Cisco modem/router in 192.168.0.1 DHCP is ON. Only the (following) linksys router is connected to the modem.There's a Linksys 160n router in 192.168.1.1. I need it because the wireless range of the modem is very limited (the router gets the gateway info via dhcp from the modem). DHCP is ON, and the office computers are connected via cable or wifi to this router, using its dhcp server to get their ips and network information (the gateway is still 192.168.1.1 in the computers.There's a HP printer which has to be on the 192.168.1.x network, otherwise it won't work.I need to connect an Amahi NAS (Amahi Home Server - Making Home Networking Simple) to this setup. Apparently, it needs to have its dhcp server on, otherwise it won't work as expected. I need to access it from the rest of the computers in the 192.168.1.x range, but also from the internet.

I am trying to set a little network in vmware (for do some testing on GP)in a vmware installed server2008 and win7 both are in one team Both has only one network adapter which is set to LAN1 Segment Both can ping each other Installed AD and configured DNS configured dhcp with scope 192.168.2.100 to 192.168.2.200 Set domain - [URL]Assign static to server 2008 192.168.2.101 Windows 7 can connect to domain no problem both machine got no external connectivity means cant open any webpage Do i need to add another network adapter in server2008 and set as NAT so it can connect to external network as well Can i set static IP address to 192.168.2.2 to server2008 or its has to be only within the loop basically need to setup a netwrok within a team that should be able to connect internally and externally as well ( Wont be able to connect to my host machine as need to set up VLAN for that but atleast access to internet) So wt type of vmware connection should i use

I'm setting up a small office network and the best way to do it,I have three pcs , I want to use one as the main data base/ server with all the main data to be stored on, I'm also installing a small data base software called lotus for everyone to access to update when needed, I'm just wondering what would be the best way to link all three pc's together as a network , this is something I've not done before, i have plenty of expirence with computers but I've never set up a network.

I moved out to a farm recently and am trying to set up a wireless network.Currently the house has a PC with a DSL modem. My PC is in a cabin about 450 feet away and does not have it's own phone/internet line.I bought a wireless router, network card and a more powerful antennae. Both have removable antennae so I can replace with better ones. [code] The wireless aspect works fine and I'm able to connect both PC's.I connected the DSL modem to the WAN port on the router and then the router to the PC.I can access both devices from the PC and configure them and it shows that it's connected fine. But I can't seem to access the internet through them. It works fine if I connect directly from the modem to the PC.

The company I work for has a system that our employees clock in on called UNIX (ancient program). I have an iSSH app on my iPhone that I can now log in to as long as I am on our wireless network here at our office. However, I have to travel alot and usually I'm gone during the day that all our time corrections have to be adjusted and turned in. I just log into my Unix program and adjust it...however if I'm out of town I have to do the entire thing over the phone with a lady in our book keeping department and it's incredibly annoying and time consuming. So we're looking for a way to be able to access our system through my iSSH app while on cellular network rather than being here at the office. My administrator wants me to find this out so that all our department heads can do this. I don't have any way of getting our internet provider to set up a port forward, so the only information I have to work with is our static IP address, our default gateway, our subnet mask, and the primary and secondary dns servers.

(i have 2 PCs (1 desktop and 1 laptop) both running Windows XP connected to my modem/router. the desktop is connected through a wireless adapter, and the laptop is connected directly using an ethernet cable. i have run Windows "Network Setup Wizard" on both PCs and they are part of the same workgroup with File and Printer Sharing enabled. this is as far as I've gone in setting up my LAN and everything works fine. i am able to see both PCs under My Network Neighbourhood and can access files from either PC just fine. both PCs are also able to ping each other by IP address and comptuer name.the problem is this only lasts temporarily. for some reason, after a random amount of time (anywhere between 1 hour to a few days) the desktop will "drop off" from My Network Neighborhood on the laptop. when i try to click on the desktop or workgroup in Network Neighbourhood i suddenly get the error "You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have permissions. The network Path was not found." after this happens i am no longer able to ping the desktop from the laptop either by the IP address or computer name.however I am still able to ping the laptop from the desktop by IP address and computer name, although in Network Neighbourhood the laptop can no longer be seen as part of the workgroup. I am still able access the laptop and its files from the desktop using the \*computer name* command and this will bring up the laptop name again in Network Neighbourhood.one more thing i noticed is, once I've pinged the laptop from the desktop i found that i can again ping the desktop from the laptop, but only with the IP address. If I try to ping the desktop by computer name it still times out. oweer, this also lasts temporarily... after a while, the laptop is also not able to ping the desktop IP address again.the only solution so far is to restart the router. once the router restarts and both PCs reconnect to it, then the LAN is working fine again... that is, until the problem above starts up once again! cry.gifmy modem/router model is D-Link DSL-2640B.some additional info:
- i've assigned static IPs to both PCs so they always have the same IP address from the router.
- i've tried disabling the built-in Windows firewall on both PCs but the problem remains.
- i do not have any other anti-virus or firewall programs installed.
- i've disabled "Computer Browser" service on the laptop so that the desktop is always the Master Browser.

My current set-up is: my laptop connects to the coaxial outlet with a cable so I can access the internet. So I can't really bring it somewhere else since the cable is short.
Now, I am planning to buy 2 more computers and a printer. The printer will be shared by all 3 computers. what else I need to buy (modem?? wireless router??) and what type. I also request that you let me know how to set it up. Of course, I will follow the manufacturer's instructions.

I have a small home network. My goal is to use Windows Server 2003 R2 to setup a DNS Server that can create a few simple names for some devices on my LAN, such as my printer. My DNS server will forward other inquiries (like google.com) to OpenDNS. Additionally, I don't want to setup a domain controller for my network. I wish to continue using workgroups,how to setup a Windows DNS Server on a workgroup. My biggest confusion is the FQDN of my name server. By default, it's setup as "server.", where 'server' is the name of my Windows Server 2003 machine. My workgroup is named 'Home'. So I tried 'server.home', but this does not resolve. What DNS suffix do my other machines on the network use by default? Is my domain name on the network really my workgroup name? Another thing I want to avoid is configuring a DNS Suffix for every single client machine on my network in their NIC properties for IPv4. I have a D-Link router, and if I do an "ipconfig /all" on my machine, I see that my DNS suffix is 'router', which is the name of my D-Link router. I try setting my DNS Server FQDN as 'server.router' and that doesn't work either, so I'm out of ideas.

I am trying to set up a network that is over a larger area than I am use to. I have experience setting up wired networks for small and medium sized businesses, as well as setting up multiple access points to cover a larger area. My goal is to set up a work site trailer to provide wireless coverage for a farmer's field. The largest distance I am dealing with is a half a mile. Depending on the field the direction the signal ranges from 90 to 180 degrees. My problem is my lack of experience with the hardware to accomplish this. I am trying to figure out what is the easiest cheapest and most reliable way to accomplish this. Currently my plan is to use a Cisco WAP4410N access point and hooking it up to multiple high gain unidirectional antennas. Is there a reliable website out there to accomplish this without wasting money on trial and error? I don't like starting a project before can this be accomplished? What should I be looking for in an antenna? How many degrees offset should they be? What kind of wire should I be running from the antenna to the access point?

I recently signed up for Centurylink Prism TV and internet, they use a Cisco DDR2200 (modem+wireless router combo) which I've come to realize is only a "g" router, so I purchased a cheap Belkin N150 (which I intend to use as my main router). I've turned the wireless function off on the Cisco and have an ethernet cable running from a LAN port on the Cisco to the internet port on the Belkin.
The issue I'm having is how do I set up the IP addresses/DHCP servers for both routers? By default, the Cisco's IP address is 192.168.1.254 (I know, weird right?) with a DHCP range of 192.168.1.63 - 192.168.1.253. Whereas the Belkin's IP address is 192.168.2.1 . I guess I'm sort of at a loss on how to set this up to optimize my network.

I have heard there is a way to have these 2 routers connect wirelessly (one threw the other) so that i can hook up direct tv dvr to the internet w/out running a long cable.

I want to set up my own home wireless network for the first time. Also this is the first time I'm using wireless router.nd trying to set up the network.Currently, I have ADSL+ router device that is configured in route mode and it has PPPoE credentials stored, so until now, I use ethernet cable to connect it to the ADSl router and everything works fine (Automatic IP, DHCP on notebook). Notebook also has wireless adapter, so I bought asus wireles router.This was supposed to be an easy install. According to the instructions all I need is to use this ethernet cable to connect to WAn port on wireless router and to follow Quick set up instruction. But this quick installation procedure fails.When I try to figure out why, I came accross to the fact that existing ADSl router has 192.168.1.1 and this new asus WiFi has also 192.168.1.1

I am buying a router with wireless soon and i am setting up an ADSL account.I only have one computer that will connect to this router.The router will be based in the living room area where the phone line is.My room (where the computer is situated) is quite far from the living room and i am not keen to drilling holes through roofs to wire some LAN cable.My plan is to use a wireless dongle in my pc to connect to the router for internet. Will this affect the speed of my downloads off the internet at all? will it be the same as if i was using a lan cable?I know file sharing over the network via WAN is slow but will my internet be?

i have just bought an external hard disk which i want to use as an ftp server. my internet connection setup at home is like so. I have a standard wireless router that my isp provides, and a wireless router(TPLink tl-wr1043nd). When i first connected the HDD to my tplink router, i had successfully made an ftp server, but just for local access. Now i cannot get how i can make my ftp server externally(access it from outside my LAN).

So I have AT&T U-verse and am teaching myself networking and am wanting to mess around in creating my home network and set up static IPs for my devices. I know how to set them up, but I guess AT&T is saying that they have to allocate the static IPs....pretty much they are saying I have to pay them so they can say ok I can use the IP addresses from xxx-xxx-x-10 to and then depnding on how many I want to have depends on how much I pay. This makes no sense to me. Why should I have to pay my ISP for static IP address, from my understanding those are things

Im trying to rebuilt my parents home network. This is the general layout of what Im trying to go for when everyting is said and done.

and i dont know what switch 2 is yet because my dad ordered it and it has come it yet, all i know is its a linksys Now the big problem I keep having is keeping everything up and running for more than a day. Ive already configured router 2 to a staic ip address of 192.168.1.151 and disabled DHSP server thing which cleared up some of the inital issues I was having. But I continue to be plagued with issues of computers saying there are duplicate names on the network and the internet only working on some devices most of the time and the internet going out completely after a day or two. Now when the internet only goes out for some devices its usually limited to everything thats not hooked directly into router 1.but everything hooked directly into router 1 still has internetand the basic hard restart of everything does nothing to solve the problem. The only real way Ive been able to solve things on a large scale for a short time frame is to unhook everything and setup reouter 1 and the computers that hook into it on day one. come back on day two and setup switch one and comback the next day and so on and so forth. and usually by day 5 everything has worked for about a day or two then Im back with nothing working.

Active Directory etc. I know so far I will need the server cabinet - But my main concern is how I will make this new site connect to the already existing network and the other things which I will need.

I have a salon with widows XP, At&t DSL modem (for credit card processing). I would like to hook up wireless internet (probably linksys for customers but also to hook up Pandora music). How do I hook up? DSL phone to modem to wireless? Or visa versa and many of the problems I have read about on line seem to be older posts (is it easier now). Do I need to go in and change to a "bridge" mode?

He currently has 1 server, and 11 workstations, he also has a network switch that we will be replacing.We have picked out a Dell server, running Windows Server 2008 R2 that will be used as the main file server, as well as the domain controller. Where I seem to be confused is on setting up the networking component, particularly how the machines will get IP addresses. As mentioned, I will be purchasing a new Ethernet switch, in order to get the fastest LAN speed possible; I have selected the Dell PowerConnect 2816, which is a 10/100/1000Mbs switch. My question is, will I be letting the switch handle the IP's/DHCP or would I be better off, setting up the server for DHCP? If so, do I also setup the server as the DNS server? From what I am reading online using the server as the DHCP/DNS server gives us more management capabilities and is more "secure". As a test, I loaded Windows Server 2008 R2 on a home machine and played around with this. I got a bit lost on the DHCP and DNS setup and it appears that one needs a Static IP from your ISP in order to setup your serve as the DHCP/DNS server for the domain. Is this correct? I haven't been to his office yet to check out all the existing equipment, is it safe to assume that his ISP provides a router or whatever is needed to feed the switch?

I have a router on which I installed DD-WRT firmware. I am trying to set up a virtual interface to use as a guest network. The guest network should be on the 192.168.8.0/24 subnet while our LAN is on the 192.168.1.0/24 subnet. The guest network should have full internet access, but no access to our LAN. I think I have everything set up correctly as far as creating the virtual interface and assigning it to a bridge (br1). I am able to connect to the guest network and the client gets an IP on the correct subnet. I am not able to access anything outside the 192.168.8.0/24 subnet however. I'm guessing I need to setup some iptables rules, but I'm pretty shaky with them. Here is what I currently have under firewall:
iptables -I INPUT -i br1 -m state --state NEW -j logaccept
iptables -I FORWARD -i br1 -o $wanif -m state --state NEW -j ACCEPT
Edit, more info: set up a wireless virtual interface (ath0.1) to be my guest network. Under Setup>Networking I then created a bridge called br1 with the ip 192.168.8.1 and assigned ath0.1 to it. I added a DHCP server to the bridge. Then under Services>Services I added the following to Additional DNSMasq Options
interface=br1
dhcp-range=br1,192.168.8.100,192.168.8.200,255.255.255.0,1440m
Finally, I added the iptables rules above to the firewall under Administration>Commands.

I'm trying to connect a wireless router modem (Belkin G F5D7634-4) to an already exisiting wired network in our home (Wired modem is a Scientific Atlanta EPC2100 series). The wired modem is connected to our home computer, and i want to connect the wireless modem so that i can pick it up on my xbox etc. Yet the home computer dosen't have wireless capabilities, so still requires the wired modem. I've tried, unsuccesfully to set this up, i've connected the 2 and the home computer so that the internet still works through the wired modem, an wireless signal is being put out (without internet and i'm unable to access the router's settings page) Is there any way for this to work? And if so, how would i do it. If not, what are the alternatives?

I've been trying to setup a wireless ad hoc network so I can connect to the internet using my iPod Touch. My wireless adapter is Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection running the most up-to-date driver.
- Set it so Windows configures my wireless network settings
- Created a wireless ad hoc in Wireless Network Connection Properties
- Changed it so that network access is given to ad hoc networks only
- For my LAN connection under Internet Connection Sharing, "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection" is ticked I am able to connect to the network that I setup but when I try to connect to the internet it fails.When I check the Wi-Fi Networks setting on my iPod Touch it gives this information:
IP Address: 169.254.1.158.228
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Router: (blank)
DNS: (blank)
Search Domains: (blank)
Client ID: (blank)
I checked and that IP isn't my IP?
