View 1 RepliesAfter reading posts in this forum and others, and reviewing MSFT tech docs, I'm still not able to establish file sharing between the wired PC and the wireless-connected laptop. Maybe I'm working under some stupid assumptions. I am able to ping each computer by their IP address - I can ping the laptop from the desktop, and vice versa. The desktop shows the Basecomputer under network places, but on the laptop, nothing at all shows up under network places. Laptop missing something?
The details:
a) Connecting to internet via DSL, Qwest ISP, Actiontec PK5000 Advanced Networking Network Router. Advanced Networking router, to me, means that home networking shouldn't require any other hardware. Stupid assumption?
b) Desktop PC is connected to the modem/router via ethernet cable
c) Laptop is connected to the modem/router via wireless, (Dell Wireless WLAN 1350 WLAN Mini PCI Card). Assocation tab of the wireless properties gives the network authentication/data encryption types as Open/WEP.
d) Some settings of the modem, viewed via the browser (192.168.0.x)
- Wireless security type: WPA
- MAC authentication Enabled
- Firewall security level: Off (NAT only)
e) Desktop PC is Windows XP Home Edition, SP 3
f) Laptop is Windows XP Professional Version 2002, SP3
g) Both are running Windows Firewall; File and Printer Sharing is checked for both, under the Exceptions tabl
h) I ran the Network setup wizard for both, using same Workgroup name, called HOME. Desktop is called BASECOMPUTER, and Laptop is called LAPTOP. No errors in the setup. On the desktop PC, under Windows Explorer, Network Places -> Entire Network, I can see a 'Home' network under a Microsoft Windows Network icon, with the Basecomputer listed. However, LAPTOP is not listed. This is after a couple of restarts.
i) ipconfig and nbtstat ouput
From the desktop:
Windows IP Configuration
code...
I have set up the workgroup and named each other and now i can see the file shared from my XP laptop and Windows 7 and it shows me that communicate with PC is OK.But throught the Remote I typed the computer name as mentioned on Remote and it says This computer cant connect to the Remote Computer.
I just want to remote the computer locally in the same network. when i browse for to remote PC and tried to click workgroup but the error appear as do not contain terimal servers.
i want to copy file from desktop to laptop.

The speed of a file transfer via router + LAN cable (or only the LAN cable) is about 600KB/s. I tried to turn off firewalls on both PC's, but it increases the speed by only 100KB/s.

I am facing some issue in LAN network.I have connected one desktop( win 7) and another desktop (win xp) to the TP link router. Both the computers got ip address and able to share the internet. But both the computers are not in the same network. That is they cant PING each other. hence they are not visible to each other.
I need to connect two LANs together with hardware VPN, for some file sharing. I was thinking to use a Linksys router and a dedicated ADSL line at each site, in order to setup the VPN. There is also an extra ADSL connection at each site for user internet access. how am I going to separate the two, without having to install two network cards on each user PC?If I set the user's gateway to the VPN or the internet router, how can I use the other?

I click on the icon and get error messages when I type the correct username and password. I also entered the shared secret key correctly. I do not know where to enter the "group" name that coincides with the key I was given.

View 1 Replies View Related[code] Basically, we used to use Outlook for our customer management, but after I tried to design a custom form for customers that suited our needs better than Outlook's default form (i.e. we don't need state, country, region, etc. for each customer, and we'd prefer to have spots for Roof, Shingle, Shingle color, etc. in their place), we ended up turning OneNote into our new Customer Management System. Our problem is sharing files, and the security or lack thereof that goes along with it.We used to save all the files to a single computer, and use Windows 7 Home group to access them. That worked okay, but often we couldn't see the file-holding computer, and would have to disconnect/reconnect to the internet.
We recently bought a NAS HD, which actually works a lot better than I expected. Unfortunately, we've learned recently that new employees are not always the most trustworthy. So this is what we are trying to do:We want to set up some type of way for us to save, store, and access files, which allows us to keep track of who has done what (access, save, copy, delete, print, etc.), preferably one where we can set up alerts if certain things happen (i.e. someone copies and pastes the entire thing, or attempts to delete). We've run into the problem where, yes, we want people to be able to copy and paste certain documents, yes we want people to be able to print, but no we don't want someone to be able to print out our entire customer lists, current project lists, etc. This NAS HD (MyBook Live 2TB by Western Digital) could quite possibly have the most ridiculous set up I've ever encountered. I can set up accounts and passwords, but they are completely irrelevant because from "Computer" you can just select the z:/ drive and it will still take you to our files. We just brought on a couple new people, and its like, everyone tells them to come to me in regards to the computers, and I can't even hook them up to the internet because it would give them access to our network, which in turn gives them access to our z:/ drive, which contains every file our company has.
\toshibapictures is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of theis server to find out if you have permissions.
I have a little small network created with 6 computers. 5 of them are windows xp home and pro. jsut bought a new laptop with windows 7 64 bit home pre. All the xp laptops can share files easily but the windows 7 is giving me a really hard time.
The win xp computers can see the windows 7 folders showing up in my network places but when i try and open then it gives me this error "\toshibapictures is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of theis server to find out if you have permissions"
I need setting up File/Folder/Printer sharing in small office LAN and also secure Files (password protect) among users. I have attached two JPG files in which i have tried my best to show the network diagram and how i want to share the files and folders. All the PCs are connected and i have made one Windows 7 Ultimate PC acting as File Server keeping its D Drive in sharing with other five Windows 7 Ultimate PCs acting as clients. I just want to know how to protect Files as per my requirement. There are no fixed PC of any dept users. All the users or Dept Head use any PCs as per availability.
View 1 Replies View RelatedBefore I moved home I had one netgear router supplied by virgin media. On my home network I had my pc sharing it's printer and also some shared folders I.e. Music folder, my documents etc. Now I've moved I have had a new netgear box supplied by virgin media (which I call virgin media 7) which because of the shape of the building doesn't reach my bed room. To fix this I have had to connect my old netgear box (which I call virgin media 8) to the new one via 10m of CAT5e but now I can't access my shared printer or shared folders on my win xp pc which is connected to virgin media 7 via wireless if my vista laptop is connected to virgin media 8. I have tried looking in the setting for the option that makes it just act as an wireless extention to vm7 but they have removed the menu from the settings.
View 5 Replies View Relatedour workstations provide data (files) to this network by using RDP. RDP allows a user to share the entire contents of one's C drive. I dislike this and many others in my organization also dislike this (from a security threat point of view). I am looking for an alternative and more secure approach.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to connect my file server to my desktop and laptop through a workgroup, however while my Laptop and desktop recognize each other, they will not recognize the file server. I have tried what I can including setting firewall exceptions and even disabling it and nothing will change. Both the file server and desktop run Windows XP SP3 while the laptop runs Windows 7 Home Premium. the file server is connected to a 5-port router which is then connected to a 10-port hub that is connected to the gateway, while the laptop and desktop are connected to a different 5-port router which is connected to the same 10-port hub. I am saying thing also because I think it is a hardware problem since the laptop/desktop can connect perfectly as they are on the same router.
View 4 Replies View Relatedrecently i was trying to share files between two computers using a networking switch.(windows xp) I tried using network setup wizard on the host computer it only gave me two drive options f drive and the floppy disc drive. so i selected f drive to copy files. I inserted a cd and clicked next but nothing happened. i tried clicking format button and it asked me to 'insert a cd to f drive' so I avoided the format button. My computer has a backup system which someone installed and im not too sure about it so I was wondering if f drive was referring to the backup system (sort of looks like an external hard drive with lights on it connected to modem) or maybe referring to usb port. I did not try using my usb yet. The second pc I noticed did not have network setup wizard on control panel and was not sure if i needed it. I heard that a router has a firewall and is more safer than using a networking switch. at this stage i dont need internet connection for the second pc

I called telephone support and they informed me that the E3000 doesn't support file & printer sharing. WTH? Is this true? If so, I'm going to return the E3000 and get my money back. But I never heard of a router not supporting file & printer sharing. My WRT54G handled it just fine.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have 3 computers, all Macs. Two are hooked into my WRT54GP2 via ethernet cables, and one is using WiFi (Airport Extreme). All get an IP number from the router via DCHP (no hard numbers). The router is also hooked up to a Motorola Surfboard cable modem. The two Macs using ethernet have no problems at all, and can access the internet and share files and printers. The WiFi Mac, however, can access the Internet fine, but cannot mount the other machines as file servers. It doesn't even ping them. What is going on in the setup of the router that is preventing the ethernet machines from being seen properly by the WiFi Mac?

I want to get cleared is the routers which have USB sharing option like WDR4300, WR2543ND and WR1043ND (I know it's the wrong section to mention this model but I also have this one in my list.). How much users can connect to the USB drive at a time?. I'm talking about 40 or more than 40 users here. Can these routers handle the load on the USB port?. Would there be any problem if nearly all of the users are connected to the USB drive at the same time?

Since I upgraded to the latest firmware I can only use the USB storage sharing when "Access shared storage with password" is left UNCHECKED. If I check the box I can no longer see the storage shares in Windows 7. I have also tried "\tploginlink.net" in the Run box, and it connects but shows me no mounted volumes. Also, Is it possible to set up more than two user accounts in addition to "admin" and "guest"?
