Network Share Permissions And Security Groups?

Apr 17, 2013

I have a department network share that has several sub folders within that share. The director of this department doesn't want her employees to have access to everything in said share. We have a blanket security group for the dept that grants read/write access to the share. I tried creating a limited view security group and added it to the permissions on the share (right click the share, security permissions etc) but I am still able to go into folders that I shouldn't have access to.

How To Share Files Between Computers With Different OS

May 2, 2013

I know this is sort of a stupid question, but I just spent over an hour with a Microsoft Tech Support guy who had absolutely no clue what he was doing. He frequently paused for five minute intervals to "confer with his resources" (I suspect he was reading an outline that told him what to do), and every time I explained that an issue did not work precisely as he expected, he had to put me on hold and talk to someone else. It was hellishly aggravating

Cannot Share Files Between Windows 7 And XP

May 18, 2012

I have 3 computers in my home network: the main computer, a laptop, and an old computer used for streaming vids and pix to the TV. I recently upgrading the main computer from XP to Win7, as well as upgraded the TV computer from Win98 to XP. The laptop and main computer are fine. The problem arises when I try to access files from either the laptop or main computer from the TV computer.I've also read something about that the user name and password has to be the same on all the computers on the network, but that doesn't really make sense. The laptop and main computer don't have the same user name and they work fine. Besides, before I disabled password file sharing, I entered the proper name and password for the main computer and it still wouldn't let me connect.

Can't Share Files Between Windows 7 And XP

Oct 2, 2011

I'm running a desktop pc with Windows XP Professional SP3 32-bit, connected to the network via ethernet, and a laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit connected to the network via ethernet and wireless. The homegroup name is the same on both machines.

When I go to network places on either computer, the other is not visible. I tried pinging the desktop's IP address from the laptop, and the request timed out. I tried pinging from the desktop to the laptop, and it timed out.

Can't Share Files Or Printer

Jan 3, 2013

We've got two computers in the Homegroup on our network -- call them computers A and B. Computer A (info below) is running Windows 7 Professional, Computer B is running Windows 7 Home Premium. Computer A has an ethernet cable to the router, Computer B is connecting via WiFi.

The problem is: Computer A can access files and the printer on Computer B, but Computer B cannot access Computer A. When I'm on B and attempt to add A's printer, I get a message that:

"file and print sharing device A is online but isn't responding to connection attempts"

In the HomeGroup window on A, all sharing options (pictures, documents, music, printers, videos) are checked.

Sharing :: Can't Share Files / Printers

Jan 24, 2012

I am having trouble with my network, specifically printer and file sharing. I have 3 computers, (2 wired, 1 wireless) The network hasn't worked for quite a while. I just hooked up a new (wired) computer and it won't work on the network either. With the wireless computer, if I click on "view workgroup computers" I can see all the computers but cannot access them. With the 2 wired computers, I always get the message, "MSHOME is not accessible," etc. Funny thing is, the network used to work. I don't know what happened to it. I just formatted this new wired computer and loaded XP on it, used the network setup wizard, but keep getting the "not accessible" message. However, last month, I was working on my mom's computer and I put it on my network (hardwired). I had just formatted it and put XP on it and with that computer, I was able to access the laptop computer through the network.I have tried several times to create a new network by using the network setup wizard but it keeps saying that MSHOME is unavailable.I am using XP service pack 3 on all computers, Zone Alarm on 2 of the computers (the router and the new computer), and Windows Firewall on the other wired computer. I can access the Internet with all 3 computers.

Share Data Files With Someone In A Different Location?

Feb 24, 2012

How can I share data files with someone in a different location?

I have a particular question, and I get different answers from different tech people and salespersons at Fry's and Best Buy.

Here's my dilemma: my business partner works from home, while I am in the office using a Windows 7 desktop. This desktop contains most of the files. There are many times when he needs to access the files, so I have to e-mail them to him. It's become a distraction and slows down our work process. My question is what's the best solution to remedy this? What's the best way to share files and work independently of each other? Do we need to get a server? We're trying to keep down costs and I've seen that they can run pretty expensive. Do we need a NAS? Can we use another desktop computer as a "server"?

Best Connection Options To Share Files Across 2 Offices?

Feb 18, 2011

Have 2 office locales. Currently have a Site to Site VPN over the public domain with 1 T-1 line on each side (different carriers). The performance is _poor_. A 2MB Excel file takes over 1 minute to open at the remote location (takes less than 10 seconds at primary location).Have approximately 20 users at the remote location (about 200 miles away); entry level firewalls; and primarily only work with MS Office files.

1) What are the differences between "Private Ethernet", "MPLS VPN", "Point to Point T-1s", and just old fashion Site to Site VPN? and is there one in particular we should focus on given we only have 2 offices?

2) Do we simply just need to increase our pipes on both sides from T-1s to 2 T-1s or a 10/10 IDE line to make our S2S VPN acceptable?

3) Is all that's really needed for P2P T-1s is to have the same carrier at both locations (this is available)? Do we still need VPN or if it's all over the same carrier it is secure?

4) If we go with Private Ethernet or Point to Point T-1s, would we then need another pipe to just get to the internet?

1 - everything on the Internet went VERY slow and call to my ISP resulted in a new router.

2 - I also subscribed to McAfee Home Protect through my ISP rather than ther free AVG.

Since then, I have been unable to share the files on my desktop with my netbook; it can not see them on My Network Places.

Cannot Connect Or Share Files With Other Computer On Same Network

Sep 28, 2012

I am trying to transfer files from my laptop to my desktop, but when I open the 'network' folder from the start menu to access the desktop from the laptop, the desktop computer is not shown. I ensured that the workgroup names are the same, all sharing is turned on on both computers in Network and Sharing Center, since it is a private network, I checked the router settings and nothing seems to be wrong. The desktop is running Windows Vista Business x86 and the laptop is running Windows 7 Home Premium x64, so there is no way to make a Homegroup connection. However, I can see the laptop computer from the desktop's network folder. I click on it to gain access, but I get an error message: "Network Error, Windows cannot access \****-PC, check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. Error code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found." have checked all wiring, router settings, and nic card settings, have done a successful ping, even Network and Sharing Center, I have also checked sharing permissions and permission levels, I see nothing that could possibly affect the access of the computers.

The only thing I can think of is that when I click on the 'Network ID' button under the Computer Name tab in System Properties on the desktop, it asks join a domain or workgroup, it will not let me save the selection "This is a home computer; it's not part of a business network," that may or may not be the issue, because it will only remain on "This computer is part of a business network" probably because I am running Windows Vista Business.
