Alignment Errors - Does Frame Length Need To Be Even Number To Be Considered Valid?
May 11, 2012
I'm reading this definition in the cisco T-shoot student guide:
"Align-Err: this is the number of frames with alignment errors, which are frames that do not end with an even number of octets and have a bad cyclic redundancy check"
I don't understand what "frames that do not end with an even number of octets" actually means. Did they mean even number of bits? or does a frame's lenght need to be an even number for it to be considered valid?

I've heard that a method to optimize traffic is to use variable length packets. They say that the worst case is in minimum length packet (64 bytes). But I can't understand why.

We have 4 data T1s providing our office with 6Mbs of internet bandwidth.I have been trying to track down the reason(s) for the steadily increasing frame and abort errors on the Multilink interface of our new router. We have a new 2961 with 2 2 port T1 interface cards (VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1).
At first it looked like the T1s were completely clean, but after diving down a bit the last of the 4 T1s does appear to have a decent amount of slip and error seconds. Is that something that would cause the Multilink interface to show input, frame, and abort errors?Any config or debug commands I should start with to narrow down what might be causing this problem?
Config snippets:

I set the password for the router management consisting of 115 characters. Now I can not log into the router.
1. What is the maximum length of passwords to manage the WAG320N router?
2. What are valid characters in a password for this router?

I`m trying to come up with a couple of equations to determine the characteristics of residential networks.Basically, what I`ve got so far is that the bandwidth is determined by the interval in which PSACR (power sum attenuation to cross talk ratio) has a positive value.I do realize that bends in the cable will modify the impedance and thus modify the twisted pair characteristics. So, what I am looking for are the equations that would give me length and bend (corner) dependencies (for example, if I have a 130m link that has 4 corners, my link will have a bandwidth of X,attenuation of Y and max data rate of Z).

I can ping R2 to R5 but not R5 to R2. I have spent about 10 hours going through my network and code to no avail. I think it is the frame relay that's causing the error but not sure.. I just checked and I think R6 and R5 are not getting their OSPF updates by trying show ip route
Here are my configs: http:[url]....

If a router receives EIGRP (AD90) routes, and is configured to redistribute thoes routes into BGP(AD20), why does the RIB show only the incoming EIGRP routes and not the redistributed bgp routes? Are redistributed routes considered for RIB entry in the router that is doing the redistribution

I am using two Cisco Aironet 1252 (cisco AIR-AP1252AG-A-K9) to setup a point to point link (one is configured as root bridge and is as a non-root bridge). Both Aironets are running software version Version 12.4(25d)JA.
Is there a way that I can that I can perform an antenna alignment test on the Aironet that is configured as a non-root bridge?executing the following command dot11 dot11radio 0 ? does not show the antenna-alignemnet option.

We have a Cisco 881 router, which is crashing. We have seen that the ARP cache fills up so much it causes things to crash, our phones go down.. We dont know why this however IP CEF seems to be doing it, when we disable it goes away however disabling IP CEF causes our L2TP tunnel to become inoperable also. So why does IP CEF cause thousands of AR entries and how can we limit that!? Below is the error, sample of the ARP cache and our config. You will notice we also have a /31 given to us on WAN interface, this was given to us by our service provider. This is really strange I cant find other examples on internet.
The error:
Nov 1 04:21:57.474: %SYS-2-MALLOCFAIL: Memory allocation of 65536 bytes failed from 0x81F083F4, alignment 16
Pool: Processor Free: 55176 Cause: Not enough free memory

we have a couple of AP1262N-E-K9 APs with firmware version 12.4(25d)JA1 operating in autonmous mode. One AP is setup as repeater while all others are in root mode.
The repeater has setup one parent MAC address so it associates every time to the same parent root AP. Given this setting, I am logging into the repeater via SSH and start the antenna-alignment scan: "dot11 dot11Radio 0 antenna-alignment timeout 4"
During this scan, the repeater disconnects from its parent to perform the scan so no output is visible at the SSH console. After the scan is finished, the repeater re-associates to its parent and some output appears on the SSH console.
8 of 10 times this procedure works fine: the scan is finished and I can continue entering commands on the SSH console. However, in some cases the repeater is not reachable any more for about 7 minutes. I.e. pings to the repeater's IP address are unsuccessful and the SSH connection hangs until it is automatically disconnected after a timeout. Also, the web configuration interface is not reachable. After about 7 minutes everything works fine.

we have a couple of AP1262N-E-K9 APs with firmware version 12.4(25d)JA1 operating in autonmous mode. One AP is setup as repeater while all others are in root mode. My goal is to perform the antenna-alignment test through an SSH console on the repeater with a given timeout-value, e.g.:
"dot11 dot11Radio 0 antenna-alignment timeout 4"
However, the behavior of this command is inconsistent as the timeout value is ignored in 20% of the tests. I.e. in 80% of all tests, the scan really runs only 4 s as specified using the "timeout" parameter. In the other 20% of the tests, the "timeout" parameter seems to be ignored: Often the antenna-alignment scan runs for about 140 seconds and in some cases even for 420 seconds. This is problematic as the access point is completely unavailable during the test, i.e. the configuration ssh/web interfaces are not reachable and no clients can associate to the access point. [URL]

I have some tunnels which terminate to my home router. I'm allowing the other ends of the tunnels to use my voice setup. I need to prepend *67 to all called numbers which don't originate from my house. I don't want people calling my home number based on the caller-id number they see when someone across one of the tunnels calls.
So if 5008 calls 212-333-4444 I want it sent to my provider as *672123334444. If 5001 calls a number, I don't want it touched. Can I do this? I can use IOS or CUCM here.

I am installing a network in my small business and was given a spool of Cat5 cable to run wires... I know the length in feet of cable that I was given, but I was wondering if there is some kind of markers on the cable to tell me how much is left... I will be charged for it by foot after I'm done, and I want to know how much I've used. Do I have to just use a measuring tape? Seems unnecessarily complicated... I've checked the wire but can't see any marker of the length remaining.

Provider T1 handoff with two PVCs to their MPLS cloud to a 2911.One Internet PVC and one for the MPLS including a SIP trunk .
Is there a way to use QOS to have the router prioritize one PVC over the other.Always service the MPLS/SIP PVC over the Internet ONLY PVC?The MPLS/SIP PVC will have QOS for voice but needs to be prioritize.Other option will be to police down the Internet PVC to a value which will leave the required total Kb for the voice priority KB.(FR PIPQ works if the PVC is for voice only.)

I have something I assumed but I am not sure if this wrong or not. I assume that every say 1 meter, I can send say 1 bits, so if I have 10 meters of link length, I can send 10 bits of data on that link. Do you have any argument to strongly support this assumption, preferrably a reference.
