Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5520s Secondary FW Sub-Interface Failure
Mar 3, 2013
I have two ASA 5520s in Active/Standby. I try and test this quartely to ensure it is working correctly. Everything works fine, except I have an issue with one interface. When doing a show failover, it shows the interface as failed on the secondary unit, and I am not sure why. It shows it as normal on the primary.
This host: Primary - Active
Active time: 9277305 (sec)
slot 0: ASA5520 hw/sw rev (2.0/8.2(4)) status (Up Sys)
Interface WaterworksCanopy (192.x.x.x): Normal

We already have a subnet defined to inside interface and is in produciton. the default gateway is this interface ip. In that setup now I have to add one more subnet and as the first subnet is been defined in ASA indside interface, I have to assign secondary Ip to the inside interface so that new subnet users can easily reach here and go outside.

I'll be upgrading an HA pair of ASA 5520s next week, and wanted to clarify the procedure. I read "Upgrading an Active/Standby Failover Configuration" at [URL] which suggests placing the image on both units, updating boot statements, then issuing failover reload-standby. But I was wondering if there's a way to a way to be a bit safer. I'd like to modify the standby unit, without affecting the config on the active. So I'd like to modify the boot statement on the standby without modifying the active config. That way incase there's a problem and the active reboots, it won't upgrade.
Can I modify the config on the standby without affecting the active? Then I'd like to test the newly upgraded unit with our production traffic. Would that simply be no failover active, and then once the standby becomes active -- test traffic? Once everything is okay, I would upgrade the second unit, and fail traffic back.

I am in the process of upgrading a client's firewalls from 5520s to 5525-Xs. I have 2 independent firewalls that are merging into a single firewall. Both of the source ones have a TON of user accounts defined for remote user VPN, is there any way to move these user accounts with passwords in tact?? The goal is not to have to tell the 250+ users that they need to reset their passwords at once.

I have a pair of ASA 5520s in active/standby failover mode, single context. I'll be migrating to multiple context mode later this week. Do I need to break failover first? Or if I don't need to, should I? Or can I do this while maintaining failover? Can either of these scenarios will work (or fail). I'll be remote, doing my work via SSH, but have somebody local who can console in if needed.
Migration option #1
Log into active/primary ASA
Configure Multiple Context mode
Reboot both devices
Login to active/primary ASA

I currently have the managment interface set to my internal network using our DHCP server. We also provide another interface to WLAN for a chartity organization. Their interface and WLAN are locked out of our network (no routes, no nothing) with only VLAN tagging sending out over our backup internet connection. I have been tasked to take over their DHCP scope (255.255.240.0). I added the scope into the 4404 just fine but can't seem to assign it. So, for the sake of argument lets say:
Interface:
management VLAN 10 10.10.10.10 DHCP = 10.10.10.15
charity VLAN 20 192.168.160.2 DHCP = ????
[Code].....
If I tell the charity interface to use 192.168.160.2 for the dhcp scope it errors out. I also tried the DHCP override in the WLAN with no success. If I set either DHCP option for the charity to aim at the managment interface it does nothing as it can't find it..

how to configure the backup port for the management interface for a WLC 2112. I see in the documentation that it states:
"Each interface is mapped to at least one primary port, and some interfaces (management and dynamic) can be mapped to an optional secondary (or backup) port. If the primary port for an interface fails, the interface automatically moves to the backup port. In addition, multiple interfaces can be mapped to a single controller port."
But nowhere can I find where it says how exactly to do it. Google seaches have come up empty as well. I am connecting the WLC to a 3750 stack, and would like to have a secondary port from the WLC connected to the second node of the 3750 stack. So far I have connected port 1 (management) of the WLC to a port on node 1 of the stack which is configured as a trunk and everything is workign fine. I have also connected port 2 from the WLC to a port on node 2 in the stack that is configured the same as the port on node one. how to tell the WLC to use port 2 as the management backup if needed.

I have just updated a VLAN interface on my router. I have two 6500's with GLBP configured. The particular interface had a primary and secondary IP address. I shutdown the interface on one router and deleted the secondary address then assigned the orignal secondary address to be the be the only address associated with the interface and enabled the interface and it came right back up...all looks good. I proceeded to do the same thing to the other router and once again all looked good. Now, I am able to PING the devices in the subnet from router, but am unable to ping them from any place else. I have two ASA5510's set up in failover, and the secondary keeps crashing after doing the interface checks when bringing failover up. This only happens if I try to upgrade the image on the secondary to anything newer than 8.4.1 (I've tried with 8.4.1-11 and 8.4.2). The primary one run just fine with new images.
I don't have the exact error right now, as I need to do a screen capture from console. It's just a huge crash dump. Are there anything I might have missed during the upgrade? Should I cold-boot both the firewalls in the correct order?

I have a pair of ASA 5520s operating in failover pair as active/standby, having two contexts on them. I am planning to share the load and make it active/active making first context active on the primary unit and second context active on the secondary unit. My question is if this will disrupt any connectivity thru these firewalls when I do "no failover" on the active/standby and assign the contexts to different failover groups and enable the failover back.

I was planning to do in active /standby mode for failover .But i have a doubt , when i do "show version " on live asa output says Active /active failover , does this means that i can only configure failover in active/active mode not in active/standby (which i want to do )?

Just want to know if there is a way to configure secondary IP address on the outside/public interface of ASA/PIX.One of our clients have used most of their IP on the subnet given by their ISP. They use those IP's for staticallymapping to Servers inside their local LAN. Thus, they requested another block/subnet from their ISP. They will also use this for static mapping/port forwarding to other servers in their network. The current UTM they are using is allowing this but they would like to use ASA/PIX as their main Firewall. Is this even possible or is there a workaround for this kind of scenario?

I'm working on configuring two ASA 5520's in an Active/Standby configuration. I've got almost everything the same between the two units for AnyConnect to work expect the following two items:
AnyConnect Client Profiles
AnyConnect Client Software
If I upload the software manually to the Standby unit I get warning about them not being in sync and on the active unit if I do a 'write standby' it does not copy the profile or software.

We have 2 ASA 5505s in a data center at a remote site.
Whilst troubleshooting another issue I noticed the below. I don't know much about fail over but this would suggest that the secondary ASA is active and the primary ASA is on standby.
if the primary is "active" then how come the secondary is the active ASA? I would have thought that once the primary ASA became active this would assume the "main" role".

Clients in both networks can reach internet, but they can't communicate with eachother. Hosts on the additional network can ping the ASA inside network IP, but nothing else. I get incomming hitcount for inside interface when 10.200.12.x tries to ping 10.200.31.x. In the error log, I see: [code]

I have a single production 5510 with 2 contexts. Now I want to integrate the secondary failover unit. My question is: How much configuration needs to be done on the secondary firewall? How much of the configuration will be sync'd from the primary to the secondary when the secondary is connected?
For example, do I need to add the following on the secondary or will it be sync'd from the primary?
admin-context NAME
context NAME

I have a working DMVPN solution. I am trying to stand up a secondary DMVPN hub at our disaster recovery site. We are trying to deply to a Dual HUB SIngle DMVPN solution. The HUB2 DMVPN router has an INSIDE trusted interface and has an OUTSIDE UNTRUSTED interface.
The inside is 10.248.11.X...the Untrust/public is 192.168.93.11 which is connected to our DMZ 3 on the ASA 5520.....then I am trying to NAT the 192.168.93.11 to an outside public IP 199.248.30.X....just not working...have had 2 tickets open with Cisco this week and they still are unable to resolve. I am sure it is the ASA5520 is not configured correctly.

i just received a RMA for failed ASA 5520 that was acting as secondary unit in multicontext configuration. What would be correct procedure to install it back in production? Do i need to restore backed up config of the fallen unit or is it just enough to enable multimode and connect to existing (primary) unit? Any good link for documentation that deal with this issues.
