Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6509 VSS Utilization On Solarwinds?
Mar 30, 2011
we are using solarwinds as monitoring toll for all network devices..the solarwinds shows proper memory & cpu utilization for catalyst 3750 switches but shows hogh cpu/memory utilization values for 6509-vss...when we log into vss via cli the util & memory values are normal but same are very high on solarwinds..i have checked the solarwinds site also and fond that there was issue for 6509 related to high cpu in relase before 9.2 and 9.2 release of solarwind has resolved this issue..is anything to be checked on 6509 or as such any known bug in this regard for 6509-vss i am using software s72033-ADVIPSERVICESK9_WAN-VZ.122-33.SXI4A on my vss.

From couple of weeks we have observed the cpu utilization of cisco 6509 with SUP 720 is high. During daytime from 9:00 to 21:00 it keeps increasing & reaches 98% & after 21:00 becomes normal.

I have having two Cisco 6509 both working are my main Core Switches with which I have all my Layer 2 VLANs configured and then distributed thru the trunks links to all the Access Switches. I have L3- Vlans also configured on them with which one switch in primary and the other is secondary. All of sudden last night I got this message on my core switch 2 this for VLAN 1 which is my users LAN, how can I check as to what would have caused the core switch 2 HSRP to be active and then in standby
*Nov 5 23:33:29.296: %HSRP-5-STATECHANGE: Vlan1 Grp 5 state Standby -> Active
*Nov 5 23:33:29.796: %HSRP-5-STATECHANGE: Vlan1 Grp 49 state Standby -> Active
*Nov 5 23:33:29.804: %HSRP-5-STATECHANGE: Vlan1 Grp 49 state Active -> Speak
*Nov 5 23:33:29.920: %HSRP-5-STATECHANGE: Vlan1 Grp 5 state Active -> Speak
*Nov 5 23:33:40.144: %HSRP-5-STATECHANGE: Vlan1 Grp 5 state Speak -> Standby
*Nov 5 23:33:41.280: %HSRP-5-STATECHANGE: Vlan1 Grp 49 state Speak -> Standby
Also last night i got call from office saying that we are getting huge delay in pinging the default gateway of the user LAN which is the same vlan as the above and it was just for few minutes and then it was back to normal and now when I came to office and check there were no logs in both the core switches. When I checked the cpu utlization it was showing me high on both the switches how can I check as to what would have caused the CPU utilisation to go high all of suddedn?

I am trying to setup netflow with on 6509 and SolarWinds NetFlow Traffic Analyzer v3.10.0
The problem I have is that after configuring the basic settings of NetFlow on both side I can't see all the traffic I expected to capture in NetFlow.
The details of my problem.
I want to monitor the traffic on VLAN 20.
In the general configuration of the switch I have entered the following
ip flow-export source vlan 10
ip flow-export version 9
ip flow-export destination 132.5.200.123 8080
Where vlan 10 is the management vlan. Vlan10 can ping 132.5.200.123 no problem.
On VLAN20 interface I configured this
ip flow egress
ip flow ingress
ip route-cache flow
When I go to SolarWinds Netflow Traffic Analyzer I can see maybe 1 or 2 packets flows, like nothing of the data. If I do a capture of the traffic on VLAN 20 I can see there is loads of IP traffic on that VLAN but why is netflow not capturing the statistics of those flows and reporting it to NetFlow ?
command "ip flow-export source vlan 10" ?

We have recently upgraded oor LAN and we are using couple of Nexus5548UP switches in the core with 2960 stacks as access switches. Each access switches stack is connnected to both core switches with link being port-chanels and VPCs. All is working fine, but our SolarWinds management platform (NPM) is being flooded with "Physical Address changed" events. Here is an example of messages:
NSW_Core_2 - Ethernet1/7 Physical Address changed from 000000003811 to 73616D653811
NSW_Core_2 - Ethernet1/7 Physical Address changed from 200B82B43811 to 000000003811
For each interface I have messages like these repeating.I am not sure what those messages means or if there is actually anything wrong. Performance of the network is good, there are no errors on any interfaces and I do not see anything related in the switch loggs.

I am seeing a strange situation on my 6500 switch?By having snmp walk on '1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3' (== cpmCPUTotal5sec), I came to know that there are two processor and the cpu util for switching processor is gone to 88 % and some time creeps to 99 %.
snmpwalk -v2c -c "removes" sw6500 '1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3'
SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3.1 = Gauge32: 12 (--- this is for CPU of Router Processor )
SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.9.9.109.1.1.1.1.3.3 = Gauge32: 99 (--- this is for CPU of Switching Processor )
but when I do sh process cpu on the console, all looks normal as it shows cpu utilization of RP. why the value is so high on the switching processor ?

I'd like to know what is "masks" in the output of show platform tcam utilization. What does 784 mean? What effect has the number of mask in the amount of supported unicast direct routes?
I'm having trouble comparing the capacity of theese two switches, regarding unicast directly-connected routes. I know the second switch has cpu utilization issues and ip unicast failed routes over 4096 arp entries. What would be the case for the first one?

We plan to implement a large number of ACL on our Distribution switch which is a HSRP pair of 6509C switches running on sup-bootflash:s72033-psv-mz.122-18.SXD3.bin WE need to divide the Network in three layers
unsecure layer
Proxy layer
Secure layer
We have approximately 250 vlans on the our distribution switches and plan to implement 15 ACL on different vlans Each ACL can contain upto 30 lines or less.
basic ACL example we will be applying on different vlan
vlan 200
ip access-group test123 in
My question is Can these ACL on a vlan can have a massive impact on the 6509 CPU ?

I've been looking at reported problems with our Vdeio Conferencing kit attched to a stack of 3750's (which I think is down to QoS) but this got me looking at the logs. We get a lot of high CPU utilization warnings mainly for SNMP (315), Hulc running con (95), Virtual exec (289). I understand the last two are normal, and the SNMP one is probably Cisco Works polling as it happens every 4 hours.
However I've got an odd one: Apr 25 07:34:58: %SYS-1-CPURISINGTHRESHOLD: Threshold: Total CPU Utilization(Total/Intr): 93%/0%, Top 3 processes(Pid/Util): 296/85%, 144/0%, 154/0%

First of all I purchased the switches with part no. WS-C3750X-48P with the following IOS c3750e-universalk9-mz.150-1.SE1 & IOS feature license to work as ipservice.
Symptoms:
1) - When running the switches in stack mode (connecting the booth switch with full-duplex stack) I found the cpu utilization on each switch reached to 34% The Hulc LED Process reaches to 20%
3) - After about 1 hour with no connections to the switch I found the status not changed.
4) - I tried to run each switch in stand-alone mode (without stack cables connected) & monitor the status of the cpu utilization. I found it the same problem exist. Actions taken:
1) - Refereeing to the internet I found a bug ID describing the status of the mentioned symptoms (attached)
2) - I made a down grade for the IOS version to be c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-58.SE2.bin
3) - The mentioned IOS solved the Hulc LED Process (became 1 : 3 % ) & however cpu utilization became 18% with no links or traffic connected to the switches.
4) - I guess that 18 % utilization is too much for a free switch (refer to the show run file) as I did not configure any advanced commands.

The device on the TenGigE port is echoing back all of the traffic received, so the 1 GIG links are TXing at 95% as well.When I do a "show controllers utilization", the port utilization numbers are correct, but the fabric utilization is higher than I would expect. The fabric should be 128 gigbits / second in this switch, and there is 7.6 gigabits TX/RX to the ten gig port. The fabric utilization is at 49%. I would expect 7.6 / 128 = 5.9% or possible double that. [code]
