Not sure where the best place to drop this question.  It is a DIR-601 router.  I have it configured in the virtual servers list as; internal system ip, public port/private port both 23, protocal tcp with inbound filter, allow all and schedule set to always.  I have a second system with a different public port.  I can connect to either one but after a short amount of idle time it appears to just drop the connection.

Cisco Infrastructure :: 1841 Dialer Profile - Connection Exists But No Telnet Session Possible

Jul 11, 2012

I have a big problem with my Cisco 1841 and the WIC-1AM-V2 in Slot 0.I got the task, to test if it is possible, to build up a connection (Dial on Demand Routing) to a remote modem, which is connected to a console port of another Cisco 1841, with the integrated modem card over POTS from the CLI of the router. My router will only dial out to the remote modems and only if its needed.I am connected to the router with the integrated modem card over a console cable on the console port. The remote modem is also connected to the console port of the remote Cisco 1841.

I found out, with my Dialer Profile configuration, it is possible to build up a connection. I configured a dialer list, that specifies that all ip traffic is permitted an interesting for my dialer interface. So a telnet or ping brings up my dialer, which brings up my Async interface. With the "show line" command, I can see that the TTY line, connected with the Async0/0/0 Interface is in use for 5 minutes, because of the "exec-timeout 5 0", which is configured on the remote router. Now the problem is, in this 5 minutes, I can not use a remote telnet on this line with my loopback interface, because the line is already in use and I get a "connection refused". The first telnet I use runs in a timeout, because the remote host is not responding. When I dial out directly from the modem card and not from the CLI with the AT-commands, I get also the connection and with a return i get the login prompt. I will post my actual config, so that you can see maybe a mistake I did or which command I must use, to get a working connection. [code]

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Pasting Script Into Nexus 7000 Telnet Session?

Feb 27, 2013

Any issues with pasting scripts into a Nexus 7K and having the scripts get all messed up even though they are logically correct?  I've had this issue over the years with IOS devices and the console port and tweaking some of the line feed/character delays fixes the issue but that was always with the console port and not a telnet session.  Telnet has always worked flawlessly on IOS.

I've determined that if I tweak my line feed delay up to 1000ms it seems to work fine, but it just doesn't make sense to me that I have to do that.I have a customer with 3300 ACL lines that need to be put into a Nexus as part of a migration from 6500 to Nexus.  And yes, I've already tried to convice them to offload these VLANs behind an ASA!

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Unable To Ping VPN 3005 Concentrator From Telnet Session In 3750

Feb 7, 2012

The network is set up like this.

Host -----> 3750 (classic) running IPSERVICES stack ----> 3550 router -----> VPN 3005 Concentrator.

IP routing is disabled on the 3750 (it's acting solely as a switch) IP routing is enabled with an EIGRP process running on the 3550 router that has the network for the 3005 broadcasting.

I can ping the vpn 3005 concentrator from a telnet session in the 3550 but not from the 3750.I can ping between the 3750 and the 3550 vlan management interfaces.  Visually speaking it's like this

3750 ------> 3550  [Success!!!!]
3550 ------> VPN 3005 Concentrator [Success!!!!]
3750 ------> 3550 --xxxx--> VPN 3005 Concentrator [Timeout....]

I know this because I tracerout to the 3005 from the 3750 and it resolved the default gateway configured for the 3550 properly but then started timing out.

The 3750 is trunked to the 3550.

3750 is vtp client mode
3550 is vtp server mode

I'm wondering if there's a layer 2 issue involved here as it is a VTP domain and maybe it's not returning properly.

Cisco VPN :: 5520 / 5550 - VPN Using Outside Ip With NAT?

Aug 13, 2012

I'm trying to setup a tunnel from our Cisco 5520 to a 5550 using one of our external ips natted through this tunnel. For some reason traffic that should hit this tunnel goes through global nat. Here is the configs I have for this tunnel:

access-list policy-nat extended permit ip host 66.77.88.170 host 1.2.3.4
access-list Outside_cryptomap_60 extended permit ip inside-network 255.255.254.0 host 1.2.3.4
access-list Outside_cryptomap_60 extended permit ip host 66.85.99.170 host 1.2.3.4

[code]...

If I ping 1.2.3.4 from a inside ip host I see in the logs that it uses 66.77.88.136 as the NAT and not 66.77.88.170. Do you see something wrong with this configuration?

Cisco VPN :: ASA 5550 Blocks Traffic For Some IP

May 14, 2013

In our company we use ASA 5550 as a VPN server (failover pair, FW 8.2(5)). Long time we used Cisco VPN client (easyVPN) only and some time ago we started to use L2TP/IPsec VPN from Windows clients.From this time we can see strange behavior. Some ip addreses (we use ipv4 only) from local VPN ip pool are getting unusable for clients. When client gets this ip address the traffic from client to intranet is ok but the traffic from intranet to the client is blocked. This behavior affect both L2TP/IPsec and easyVPN clients with this ip address.The packet trace shows that the traffic will be blocked because implicit deny ACL but ACL for the connected user is created:

Phase: 10
Type: ACCESS-LIST
Subtype: vpn-user
Result: DROP
Config:
Additional Information:

[code].....

We use RADIUS for authentication and ACL. Failover to the standby ASA solves the problem but this terminates all L2TP/IPsec VPN connections.We use Cisco Anyconnect VPN too and when Anyconnect client gets this „strange“ ip address he can communicate normally without problems. It looks like that this problem is related to IPsec. how to discover why ASA uses -implicit deny- instead of user ACL?

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5550 With IOS 8.0(2) Crashes

Jan 31, 2012

we had just installed our ASA 5550 with IOS 8.0(2) a couple of week ago.

2 interfaces from each slot are being used ie 0/0 for Branch users comming via MPLS cloud ,  0/1 for internal LAN users comming form Core Switch  & 1/0 for Server farm LAN   , 1/1  for Internet (outside)

the first 3 interface are considered inside with sec set at 100   while the 1/1 is outside with sec at 0.

Last night it suddenly started dropping all connections without any warning  or any noticible log form the ASDM logging.

the connection drop would happen for 2 - 3 minutes and would work fine for the next 15 minutes or so..

after conencting the console , we found out that the IOS would suddelny go abrupt and show this display ...

Cisco Firewall :: 5550 - How To Do NAT Exemption With V8.4

Oct 4, 2011

I have looked in the books I have (Cisco ASA, PIX and FWSM; ASA 8.0) and googled a good bit but can't seem to find any specific mention of how to do NAT exemption with v8.4. It seems NAT exemption (NAT 0 access-list) was deprecated. Using ASDM, there's no corresponding menu item for this that is obvious.

We have public addresses inside the ASA and want to allow in/outbound connections using these IP's without NAT. The ASA is a 5550.

Cisco :: Can't Telnet From Inside To 891

Jan 26, 2012

I have a 891 router I have been testing some things on. I have been able to successfully telnet to it in the past with no problems. Just yesterday I was trying to set an interface to have an IP of 10.10.10.2 which I realized was an IP I had forgot to exlcude from DHCP and it was handed out to the computer I was using to telnet in. So I wrote in the exlcude commands and did an ipconfig -release ipconfig -renew on my PC that had the 10.10.10.2 IP. After the renew I was given 10.10.10.7 (put in a few more excludes).However the release dropped my telnet connection and afterwards I was completely unable to telnet in, getting the error that says I cannot open the connection on port 23. I had made some changes to my entire config beforehand which had it switch to use a new public IP. I never saved the changes and did a hard reset by unplugging the router to get my old config back and see if I could telnet after that. Still could not get in, same error. Well I went through and remade my entire config to use the new public IP. My 10.10.10.7 PC can access the internet, DNS, ping the router, all just fine. Still can't telnet. I remade my line/vty config and made sure it matched up with a config I had on another router. Still can't telnet. Last thing I did was go in and manually clear all open line connections. All that is left is an idle 0 con 0 line that it wont let me close. Still can't telnet.What the **** is going on with this thing? I am completely at a loss to explain why I cant telnet. It must be something in my ACLs that I am missing?

Cisco Firewall :: High CPU Utilization On ASA 5550?

Mar 10, 2013

I have Active Standby ASA5550 setup with VPN premium license. A few days back we had a requirement of SSL VPN connection for and we got a temporary from Cisco for same, this license expired and the ASA reverted to it's original license. 3 4 days after this we saw a sudden increase in CPU utilization (upto 90% + -5%) on the ASA during production hours but were not able to figure out the reason, in order to restore the services we failovered the firewall to secondary and everything worked fine. We were suspecting one of the following but there were no logs for any of this

1. The ASA hardware was haivng problem

2. Some client was doing a DoS attack to bring down the ASA (no logs for this as well).

We took a downtime to look further by failovering the ASA back to primary and it worked fine without any issues ruling out the 1st option. We also came across a licesing doc [URL]

Downgrading any license (for example, going from 10 contexts to 2 contexts).

# Note If  a temporary license expires, and the permanent license is a downgrade,  then you do not need to immediately reload the security appliance; the  next time you reload, the permanent license is restored.

As per this doc, sooner or later a restart was required on the ASA. We restarted secondary ASA and everthing was fine but when we restarted the primary ASA by swtiching over to secondary some of the server (not all) in the DMZ stopped working (even ICMP unreachable) and only came back to normal when the primary ASA was restored and working fine (with failover).

The reboot was done by shuting down the physical link between the Core switch and ASA inside individually.

I am not sure what could be the issue that the servers in the DMZ wen unreachable.

Cisco Firewall :: ASA 5550 Sending Reset With TTL Of 255

Oct 3, 2011

I have the following problem, right now we have an ASA 5550 connected to the client´s side. A reset is being received on the client´s side, but when we run the sniffers on both extremes of the network, we can see that the reset is not being sent by the server´s side.

We have narrowed it down to the 5550 ASA, but have found no bug that matches the description.

The characateristics of the reset packet are the following:

- It is the only packet with a TTL of 255.

- Both server and client have very different window sizes, and the reset packet even though has the server´s ip and port as source of the packet, it has the client´s window size.

- It has a correct ack number.

-Before the reset is received, there are a couple of retransmissions of the last packet sent.

- We´re handling a VPN tunnel between both servers.
