I'm an experienced user with pcs but an absolute newbie with networking, so apologies if this is in the wrong section. I've moved into a new house that has a wireless widi (sp?) that my flatmate uses to play videos from his laptop on the tv. I asked if he still has the software he installed when he got it but he doesn't, and the software i've tried installing from searching the web hasn't worked. What should i do?

I run three computers of the wireless router (1 desktp and 2 laptops) Since making the wireless network secure I can not connect with my business laptop IBM Thinkpad X40, but thother e computers work just fine.

When i tried to assign the PC it gets disconnected from Internet.The problem is : i want to access the PCs through internet from a Laptop. When I ping the Public IP of that lan network, it works. But when i use the Remote Desktop to connect to the PC or when i use the DOS command NET USE x: \IPaddressharename /USER:username password - It doesn't work. In DOS prompt error 1231 or Network path not found error occurs.I followed the instruction to configure Remote Access like disabling firewall, no installation of any firewall software, My computer -> properties -> remote -> allow users to connect remotely this computer.

It is on a wifi but I tried it at a local wifi spot & wont hook up there either , it shows a good wifi connection at both places . I am a novice so should I just take it to a repair shop or is there some tricks I can try ?

But although this Samsung Laptop shows as been connected to the new router it wont access the internet. I am using an ethernet cable at the moment. I checked the drivers, and i am not sure if im missing any. There is a yellow mark on my network controller, but there is no description or details for it. The internet works while connected to an etherent cable directly to my router. I went to the manufacture website (dell), and downloaded/updated the drivers. Today I took out my old HP zd8228ea and tried to fix it. I inserted the XP home cd and got it running. Now I'm trying to get it on my wi-fi connection. Im pretty sure it has a wi-fi chip, though im not sure how to tell. And under my connections, it doesnt show wireless connection.

I got a new isp today and it worked with a new modem connected with a wire .. When I connected the router it wouldn't find the network so i connected the modem again with just the wire and it still won't go online.

The router is a Sagem provided by my ISP (Sky). The wireless connection works fine on my MacBook, and various other devices connect no problem with the security key.
However, his laptop (Windows Vista) will not connect wirelessly. After entering the password, it says it can't connect because it 'times out' (we are obviously entering the password immediately with no delay). It connects fine with an ethernet cable. It will also connect to an unsecured wireless network we can pick up.
The security setup is WPA-PSK with TKIP encryption, and we've made sure he is using these settings.
If it might be important, he has just moved here, and previously his laptop was connected to another Sky router with no problems.

The password provided by the ISP is 25 characters (letters and numbers). I would hate to have to change the password on all my devices for one Windows XP laptop.
