View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been involved in the Networking of a museum with a set of "Show" computers which display video, and for this reason cannot have anti virus installed becuase of the performace hit, and also the risk of pop-ups on the videos. They do however need to be connected to the internet as some are interactive and allow people to send simple emails, and they all need to allow remote support when things go wrong. It seems the networking was not thought out very well initially, and there is a single wireless router which serves the staff and public on a secured wireless network, but also serves the "Show" machines via a wired connection from one of its ports, which then connects to a master switch which serves the show machines. Now the wired and wireless is on the same network, and everything shares the same IP subnet (192.168.1.xxx), and this is not a good situation in terms of the securuty of the show machines on the wired network. So I need to work out a way to totally separate the wireless network (which will be very prone to people opening viruses in their emails etc), from the wired network (which will be the show machines which wont be touched by anyone).
I want to achieve this in the simplest and easiest way, and have been reading about the possibility of setting up a second wired router behind the current wireless one, with a different subnet IP address, to which the "Show" machines could be connected. The WAN port on this second router would connect to a LAN port on the wireless router, and thus the show machines could get their internet, but separated from the dangerous wireless network.Does this sound like a sensible start? Will the fact that the wired router (and show machines) are on a completely different subnet to the wireless router (and wireless devices), mean that the wired network will be protected? Or do I need to do more? And is this likely to work?
I was just wondering what the best way to secure my network would be. I was reading this article then the comments from others were saying that most of that info is laughable and really no good besides creating a password or encryption key. I have in the past had my wireless router set to not broadcast the SSID as well me creating my own SSID so it's not just Linksys or whatever and I had mac filtering enabled as well use WPA2 Personal and had a password. But I had some problems such as my Aunt's Laptop wouldn't connect unless I broadcasted the SSID and now my brother came back from Colorado and he said he never had any problems connecting to his friends Wireless network, I am assuming his friends was unsecured but here his Laptop won't stay connected unless I have an unsecured network so if I had it set to having a password it would connect but then disconnect after like 3 seconds but now it's staying connected but I have it completely unsecured. His drivers are completely updated from what I can tell.
His laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1500 series not sure exactly at the moment but I think it's the e1505. It's like 4 years old he got it in 2008 which when I was at dells website and typed in his service tag and found drivers the newest wireless card driver was from 2008. Anyways my router is a Linksys WRTU54G-TM Wireless G router with 2 phone ports. Anyways my network would consist of 2 Desktop PC's one running windows 7 1 running XP but both are right next to the router and are wired so nothing there then as for wireless there are 3 laptops at this time my brothers Dell E1505 I think (It Won't stay connected) and it runs Vista, my Dell Latitude C840 running XP (No problems)and an Acer extensa 4420 running XP (also no problems). Also my younger brothers friend comes over a lot and bring his Laptop which is an HP something running XP (no problems) Also we have a PS3, A Wii each have connected fine and possibly my brother from Colorado's Xbox 360. Also my younger brothers friend also brings his PS3 over and has no problems. There are also 3 ipod touches no problems either. We also have Ooma VOIP telephone service and that's just connected directly to the router

View 1 Replies View RelatedHave HP Mini netbook running Windows XP. At work I used to be able to connect to the secure wireless network, but can't anymore. All of a sudden, it now has a lock next to the name in the list of wireless networks and asks me for a password when I try to connect. My roommate knows NOTHING about computers and has no idea how it happened. She has an Arris modem, Windows 7. I tried typing in the common IP address for Arris and I did get to a screen giving a lot of info about the system. But there was no where to log in or change any passwords.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've tried two operating systems (Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows XP) two different wireless adaptors (Dell M1530 internal adaptor and Alfa USB Adaptor which I get full bars on) and tried a different Dell M1530 laptop which I'm also having issues with. I've also tried to diagnose the network with a tool, but I'm totally unable to connect to it so I'm unable to get any more information. If I try to connect to an unsecured network, it works perfectly. I'm totally stumped about this, due to the fact that I've used two different operating systems, two different adaptors and two different laptops (albeit the same brand).

I have also tried typing in my Default Gateway and ip address that I got from cmd/ipconfig and those will not work either..I'm not understanding why this wouldn't work, and yes my internet connection is fine and nothing is wrong with my browser..
View 6 Replies View RelatedI came home and was unable to wirelessly connect to my secure home network. I can connect to it secure and wired as well as unsecured and wireless, but not secured and wireless. I have done malware scans and checked for driver updates for both my netowrking card and the Linksys WRT54G router firmware...both are good. All of the other systems in the house can wirelessly connect to it while secured, so I've narrowed it down to clearly being a problem with my computer. I am using Vista Home Premium 64 bit on an ASUS G50VT.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying map the USB hard drive connected to my EA4500 router as a network drive in Windows 7, and it works perfectly until I enable secure folder access on the router.
After enabling secure folder access, and not changing any other settings on the router I first unmount the drive since it was set up without credentials and doesn't work that way any more. When I try to remap the drive I use the same address, but select "Connect using different credentials" When it prompts me for the log in info I try using the router admin account, but it fails to connect. Windows network diagnostics tells me the device refused the connection. I proceeded to set up an account on the router under the folder access settings with the same username, and password I use on my computer, and tried to connect it without checking "Connect using different credentials" (And typing them in manually if that matters) with the same results.
Even with secure folder access enabled I can still reach the drive just fine by typing "ftp://192.168.1.1/" into file explorer. It prompts me for a username and password, I put in the admin credentials, and I'm in. Even the account I created with the same username/password as my computer works this way.
After disabling secure folder access everything works perfectly fine again... I would MUCH rather do this with it though.
Following these directions: [URL] When clicking the browse button the router shows up when secure folder access is disabled, but does not after it is enabled. I've looked through my windows sharing settings, and haven't noticed anything that should cause problems, pretty much everything is enabled. I've also tried turning off my firewall with no success.

I tried all possible security combinations the router can give me, always using a second wifi device to check if connection and browsing was possible.I tried everything I googled: drivers, firmwares, ipconfig reset renew, started and stopped services, to no avail.

However, I want to make sure the NAS is both encrypted and password protected on the network to make sure someone doesn't just walk off with our company data (by taking the whole NAS with un-encryped info) or logging on through our network.
What would be your recommendation for a NAS setup that would offer total data encryption, great security from non-authorized people on the network, and 100% Windows 7 compatibility?
I'm a head of computing at a senior school and currently have the following predicament. All of the computers we have are quite rightly networked with certain restrictions on them. Now I have just purchased seven machines for my departments use alone. All other computers in classrooms are for general use and have to be usable by any teacher for any subject. The machines I have purchased are so we can install whatever hardware / software I need with no restrictions. These machines don't need network file shares or printer access, the only shared service they need is the schools internet connection.Originally I had a router plugged into a printer port and created wireless network in my room which gave us this functionality - full unrestricted internet access, could download exes and visit any site. However the network admin (and I understand why) didn't like this and asked me to remove it. So now I have some nice machines with no internet access. When I asked the network admin what we could do about this while keeping his networked machines safe, he said it would be a long process as we would have to buy in an entirely new internet connection.
