View 1 RepliesHave HP Mini netbook running Windows XP. At work I used to be able to connect to the secure wireless network, but can't anymore. The computer has no problem connecting to any other secure or unsecure network. It detects a signal and sends and receives data, but the status remains at "Acquiring Network Address".

I've also tried to diagnose the network with a tool, but I'm totally unable to connect to it so I'm unable to get any more information. If I try to connect to an unsecured network, it works perfectly. I'm totally stumped about this, due to the fact that I've used two different operating systems, two different adaptors and two different laptops (albeit the same brand).

I can connect to it secure and wired as well as unsecured and wireless, but not secured and wireless. I have done malware scans and checked for driver updates for both my netowrking card and the Linksys WRT54G router firmware...both are good. All of the other systems in the house can wirelessly connect to it while secured, so I've narrowed it down to clearly being a problem with my computer. I am using Vista Home Premium 64 bit on an ASUS G50VT.

I recently bought a windows laptop running vista to do windows testing on for web development (I use macs normally).I was shocked to find that I can't simply push connect, enter a key and then be connected to our home wireless network... no of course not because it's windows and nothing is easy or practical.Anyhow, before I go on an anti windows rant, I actually need this working. So at home we have a wireless network secured by a 32bit WEP key.On our macs I simply push connect, enter this key and we're away. With my new vista machine I go to Network & Sharing Center -> Connect to a network and click our network.I'm then immediately met with a screen that says "Press the configuration button on your access point". I have no idea what this means.Down the bottom of the screen there is an option that says "I can't find the configuration button... I want to enter the network key or passphrase instead" Which I click. The next screen I click "Enter/Select additional log on information" but this brings up a user name/ password/ login domain screen... I just want to enter my 32 bit key and be connected. I'm using a D-Link DIR-615 wireless router. Also, when I run "ipconfig" in the command prompt I get."Media State....: Media disconnected"

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy laptop simply decided to stop connecting to my wireless network.I'm at a loss as to why and what to do. All other devices in my house are getting a perfect signal from the network but my computer either can't find it, or only has 1 green bar and says it cannot connect. I've tried a system restore, I've tried to troubleshoot on my computer and can't figure it out. The weird thing is it is picking up other wireless signals fine (like my neighbors, ect) but just not my home one. Again, it was working one minute, then simply stopped working and hasn't been able to connect at all.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy laptop suddenly stopped being able to conect to my home wifi router. It stays at "waiting for network to be ready" while at the back the wifi list stays at "acquiring network adress" for a couple of minutes and then resets to regular disconnected status. All my other wireless gadgets at home can connect with no problem whatsoever.Wifi strength is great and, when disabling security, the laptop connects without a hitch and very quickly. I tried all possible security combinations the router can give me, always using a second wifi device to check if connection and browsing was possible.I tried everything I googled: drivers, firmwares, ipconfig reset renew, started and stopped services, to no avail.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been involved in the Networking of a museum with a set of "Show" computers which display video, and for this reason cannot have anti virus installed becuase of the performace hit, and also the risk of pop-ups on the videos. They do however need to be connected to the internet as some are interactive and allow people to send simple emails, and they all need to allow remote support when things go wrong. It seems the networking was not thought out very well initially, and there is a single wireless router which serves the staff and public on a secured wireless network, but also serves the "Show" machines via a wired connection from one of its ports, which then connects to a master switch which serves the show machines. Now the wired and wireless is on the same network, and everything shares the same IP subnet (192.168.1.xxx), and this is not a good situation in terms of the securuty of the show machines on the wired network. So I need to work out a way to totally separate the wireless network (which will be very prone to people opening viruses in their emails etc), from the wired network (which will be the show machines which wont be touched by anyone).
I want to achieve this in the simplest and easiest way, and have been reading about the possibility of setting up a second wired router behind the current wireless one, with a different subnet IP address, to which the "Show" machines could be connected. The WAN port on this second router would connect to a LAN port on the wireless router, and thus the show machines could get their internet, but separated from the dangerous wireless network.Does this sound like a sensible start? Will the fact that the wired router (and show machines) are on a completely different subnet to the wireless router (and wireless devices), mean that the wired network will be protected? Or do I need to do more? And is this likely to work?
I was just wondering what the best way to secure my network would be. I was reading this article then the comments from others were saying that most of that info is laughable and really no good besides creating a password or encryption key. I have in the past had my wireless router set to not broadcast the SSID as well me creating my own SSID so it's not just Linksys or whatever and I had mac filtering enabled as well use WPA2 Personal and had a password. But I had some problems such as my Aunt's Laptop wouldn't connect unless I broadcasted the SSID and now my brother came back from Colorado and he said he never had any problems connecting to his friends Wireless network, I am assuming his friends was unsecured but here his Laptop won't stay connected unless I have an unsecured network so if I had it set to having a password it would connect but then disconnect after like 3 seconds but now it's staying connected but I have it completely unsecured. His drivers are completely updated from what I can tell.
His laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1500 series not sure exactly at the moment but I think it's the e1505. It's like 4 years old he got it in 2008 which when I was at dells website and typed in his service tag and found drivers the newest wireless card driver was from 2008. Anyways my router is a Linksys WRTU54G-TM Wireless G router with 2 phone ports. Anyways my network would consist of 2 Desktop PC's one running windows 7 1 running XP but both are right next to the router and are wired so nothing there then as for wireless there are 3 laptops at this time my brothers Dell E1505 I think (It Won't stay connected) and it runs Vista, my Dell Latitude C840 running XP (No problems)and an Acer extensa 4420 running XP (also no problems). Also my younger brothers friend comes over a lot and bring his Laptop which is an HP something running XP (no problems) Also we have a PS3, A Wii each have connected fine and possibly my brother from Colorado's Xbox 360. Also my younger brothers friend also brings his PS3 over and has no problems. There are also 3 ipod touches no problems either. We also have Ooma VOIP telephone service and that's just connected directly to the router

My roommate knows NOTHING about computers and has no idea how it happened. She has an Arris modem, Windows 7. I tried typing in the common IP address for Arris and I did get to a screen giving a lot of info about the system. But there was no where to log in or change any passwords.

When I try any encryption, however, I can't connect at all. I have tried temporarily having it unlocked and I could connect without a problem. It also works fine when I'm using my Ethernet cord.

I recently had an issue with my laptop that required a complete reinstall of windows. As if this wasn't bad enough, I lost the password that I had for my router. Thinking it was no big deal I just went ahead and reset the router back to factory settings assuming I would be able to set up a network and encrypt it as I had before. Just testing the functionality, I was able to access my router while it was not encrypted and with the DSL modem plugged in, I also had internet access. I did this both wireless and with Ethernet cable.
Happy to see this, I decided it would be a good idea to re-encrypt my router to prevent any outside access. So as I had done before I went to the setting page where I set up a network with a web key. The only thing I entered at all was the paraphrase for the key then saved the setting to test it out. I refreshed the available wireless networks and mine was there and was now listed as secure. I then proceeded to click on the network, entered the key, and then waited for it to connect. The problem is, it never would connect. It continuously tries to connect, and says it is trying to "acquire the network address" but never does. Since then I have been on the hunt trying many different suggestions I have seen online, but none of the situations were quite like this one.
I have a model number BEFW11S4 ver 4 Wireless-B router that I got second hand. There is no setup CD. I need info about how to secure the network. Just simple password protection. I'm on an old Mac PowerBook G4 OSX 10.4.11.
