My Laptop stopped having internet access. I am able to connect to my Linksys (says Limited Access) but then it states I do not have internet access. I read other forums and tried to do the "command prompt" but when I try to run as administrator it tells me "The specified service does not exist as an installed service". I am using Windows Vista and McAfee as my spyware.

My mom wanted to use it to check her email. she didnt download anything, but after she turned it off, and i turned it back on, the computer would not detect any type of internet activity. i put in a new ethernet card, and it still would not work. The sound on the computer has also stopped working. i checked windows audio service, and it says its running, and there is no detected problem with any of the hardware.

Turned out in the end all I needed to do was update my Atheros and Realtek drivers. Months down the line, now having the same symptoms, I decide to update my drivers only to find out there are no updates available and my drivers are up to date and working. The only other thing that may be the root to the this problem is the fact last night I connected to my girlfriends router at her house with this same laptop. Now I come back to my router this evening and I'm having these symptoms I had months ago. It's also saying the network is 'Undentified' eventhough it SAYS it's connected. It doesnt allow me to access the internet at all. I removed the history of my girlfriends connection on manage wireless networks, including my own.

Everytime I try it seems like I connected (the little blue globe symbol displays) but when I try and go to a webpage, the connection times out or moves slow. When I run diagnose and repair it tells me that this computer has "limited or no connectivity" even though I'm able to connect to other networks. Selecting the "automatically get new IP settings" and "reset network adapter" options don't work. After selecting these earlier it was telling me "unable to connect to primary DNS server", then it was telling me "windows has confirmed this computer is currently experiencing a network connectivity problem". Now it's telling me there is no problem in spite of the slow connection.
I don't think my wireless adapter is the issue, I'm able to connect to other networks fine. I don't think the router/modem is the issue, there's another computer in the house (that I don't own) as well as my xbox hooked up wireless to it with no problem.
I am having trouble connecting to the internet in Windows Vista Sp2. I have looked in device manager for any type of ethernet device, and I don't see one. I do not have a wireless adapter installed, but when I plug in an Ethernet cord I don't see any type of bubble saying I have new connections. I don't Even have the icon that should say local area connection in network connections

I have found many well meaning suggestions to resolve this annoying aspect of networking between Windows 7, Vista and XP but it seems like we are all banging our heads against a brick wall. I have tried every suggestion I can find on other forums but still my Windows 7 computer cannot access my XP Home or Vista machines. The message I see each time I try is as follows:- "\WINXP (or \VISTA) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have permissions. The account is not authorised to log in from this station." You will of course appreciate that the 'administrator' is myself. I can access files and a printer on Windows 7 from the other two computers providing I place shared files in the public folder ... no problem with this.
I have checked that all three computers have the same Workgroup Name. Yes, I have got Network Discovery turned on. Yes, I have turned on file and printer sharing. Yes, I have turned off Password protected sharing (and tried it turned on). Yes, I have set my network location to Work network. Yes, the computers I am trying to access do show in my network window ... each and everyone of them can be pinged from each other. I even have a little utility called Wireless Network Watcher that shows that the IP addresses, MAC addresses and each computer by name can be seen on the network.
I have one laptop (Windows Vista) and one PC (Windows 7) in my house and I am trying to share folders between them. The problem is I can access my laptop's files from my pc, but I can't access my pc's files from my laptop.
And when I go to Network and Sharing Center, on "View your active networks" part, I click joined to give check mark on Pictures, Music, Videos, Documents, and Printers (the default setting: only printers that got checked). After I checked those all, I click "Save changes". But, if I go back to click "Joined" It was set as default, it is like it doesn't save my setting.
My Laptop will only connect to the internet if I directly connect the ethernet cable from the router to the computer. Otherwise it will 'connect' local only[CODE]

I tried setting both computers up on a homegroup network but they cannot look at each others music and documents my sister has Win 7 64bit and my brother has Win vista 32 bit ? The win7 is in English so it does not seem to hard to find things. I downloaded for my sister -Advanced IPscanner - and Netcut but netcut does not seem to work on 64 bit and the IPscanner recognizes my brothers computer but will not shut it off - they wanted to be able to know when the other is online and also be able to cut one another off when they choose to.

edit I tried to disable the autoscaling feature in windows and it did not work /I am running windows vista home 32bit/I can connect to the router now I had the wrong security type selected WPA instead of WPA2, but it still reports local only, I checked my router logs and it shows that it connects but it does not give me information on if it is blocking the laptop from the internet or if my laptop is. I have tried turning off the windows firewall and resetting it as well now.
I have tried the things listed below
- uninstall and reinstall windows wireless adapter drivers through computer managment
- disablied IPv6 through wirless adapter properties (unchecking the box)
- reset my rounter entirely (after which I can no longer connect to the router at all, where as before I did this I was able to connect to my router but it was local only) held the reset button for 10 or more seconds plus unplugged my modem and router for 5 mins, I know its alot of time for that but I was eating but regardless, after which I turned on my modem let all the lights go through their setup then I turned on the router let all the lights do their thing, and then my laptop to make sure everything picked up new settings.
-something threw me off also under computer managment under the network adapters there were ipv6 to ipv4 "tunnels" or something, they had the yellow warning sign on it.

Today, my sister gets on my laptop and leaves the boxes checked, so now when I connect to my WiFi, I don't have to enter in a password anymore. Personally, I don't like this, and want to revert back to having to enter in the password each time. Is there a way that I can do that in Windows Vista, without having to reset the password itself or fooling with the router?

The engineer turned up for the appointment, which I was out for, then urged me over the phone to keep his number, and call me if I had any problems. I got home an hour later and my modem wouldn't sync. My guess is he did something with it outside so he would still get paid for the job. I called him up, and he came round and instantly replaced my old Virgin modem (which I was using with my own Belkin wireless router) with a new Virgin (Netgear) hub.I'm giving this bit of background to demonstrate, everything was fine before. I have been traveling all over Germany and automatically detecting internet wherever I go however I cannot detect the dlink wireless access point directly across from me. My work computer is detecting and connecting just fine. I see other wireless networks just not the one I have a password for so I cannot connect. I have reset and seperately restarted the wireless access point but no luck. I am in desperate need of this wireless access. There is no line I can plug into manually either. I have also tried to manually set up the network and that either did not work or I did not go about it correctly.
