Apr 11, 2012I have a WAP54G in my basement shop, wired to our main router upstairs, which is a Linksys BEFSR81. I'm not sure if this is an issue with the WAP or the router.
I only use the laptop computer in the shop every couple of days, but I leave the laptop plugged in and on most of the time. I used to have the power settings such that it didn't power down completely even after a long time. With that setup, if i didn't use the computer for several days, it would find that the connection to the router had died. The wireless link would report that it had a solid connection, but I couldn't connect to anything. Power cycling the WAP always fixed this.
Recently, I decided to save some wear & tear on the laptop drive, and adjusted the power settings to go to standby after a couple of hours. Now, it seems I can't even go one day without losing my connection.
I am running the latest frimware in the WAP, and the router is version 3.1. I can't check the firmware version on the router at the moment, because the web interface is giving me a blank screen. I know from past experience that I will have to power cycle it to get it to talk to me again.
In any event, it seems like the router connection to the WAP is timing out. I set the router "client lease time" up to 10000 a while back when I first had this problem, but that is clearly not doing the trick.

Apr 8, 2012Problem (1)I was told that having two (2) gaming systems on the BEFSR81 router will cause both xbox machines to loose connections. My kids demonstrated this lockup with the Xbox. I think its because the Xbox connection is seeing 1 IP address for both game machines. Question is there a way to fix this without getting two DSL modems with two different IP addresses ?
Problem (1)My router BEFSR81 locks up at least once every 3 days and then randomly also. We reset it is by unplugging the power to the router and it reboots and returns to normal. I also notice that the router is quite hot on the top, so I put a small quiet fan on top and the router now works longer before it locks up. (All green lights flash together or all on solid). So I thought gaming machines might be the reason for the lockup, we disconnected the xbox(s) and the router still locks up on occasion. I have read the other forum and found that Amazon could be a problem since I have been logging, I turned logging off but I still have the same lockup....Is my router dying a slow death...

Mar 14, 2009I'm trying to upgrade the firmware on my BEFSR81 v3 cable router (firmware version 2.45.xxx) on a Mac. I accessed the interface via Safari browser, followed the instructions, got a message saying not to interrupt the process, but it never completed. So I tried it again (downloaded another copy of the firmware update), and same thing. No choice but to interrupt it. My internet connection seems to be working fine, but now I can't access the router via the browser. I don't think the firmware actually updated.
Should I power down the router and then reset it?

Sep 13, 2011I currently have a LinkSys BEFSR81 connected to my cable modem as I need at least 6 wired ports for my house network. I also have a WRT54GS that is currently unused, but I would like to add it to the network so I can have some wireless connectivity as well.
Assuming that it's possible, what's the best way to combine these two units into the same network? Can the WRT54GS simply be connected downstream from the BEFSR81 via one of the open ports? I'm assuming that I'll have to change the IP address on the wireless unit to make it individually accessible for configuration, status checking, etc.

Feb 20, 2011I recently updated the firmware on my BEFSR81 v3.1 but would now like to revert to the previous version.
Where I can find the earlier version? I've got 2.51.4, build 006 Aug 21 2009 and need the one before.
It's not a critical problem, but more of an annoyance. I power everything here off one big switch which goes off overnight. Before the update I'd just switch it all on in the morning and everything would, after a minute or so, work fine. Now, however, I have to power up the router a minute after the modem or it just sits there doing nothing. That's OK when I'm here, but if it's just the wife she can't reach the back to do it.

Jan 28, 2010BEFSR81 v3.1 Current firmware 2.51.4 build 600 (09-4-2009)The Web Admin pages become dysfunctional after the router has been up 3-4 days displaying only a blank white page. Viewing the page source shows that the HTML is incomplete.I am not sure of the exact firmware version where this problem originates, I noticed it after flashing to 2.51.4 build 400 but cannot remember which version was running before the update. Just flashed to 2.51.4 build 600 last week hoping the new version had corrected the problem. Still broken.The router remains completely functional but the Web interface does not work correctly after 3-4 days.I have tried re-flashing the firmware and have gone as far as resetting the router both before and after the flash, even tried 30/30/30 resets but the problem with the Web interface remains.Re-booting the router every 3 days is not the best “solution” as my network is running DHCP. I would rather not fall back to older firmware as ver 2.51.4 build 400 corrected the DHCP errors on my Windows machines and decreased the initial connection time when machines boot up. I have read in this and other forums where others are having the same problem with this router/firmware but have been unable to find a working solution which leads me to believe the actual problem resides in the later firmware builds.

Mar 2, 2011My BEFSR81 router has never been a problem for over 10 years.All of a sudden I can not connect to the internet..I only use the router for connecting 2 PCs to the internet modem. I have not changed any configuration. tried my IPS COX recommendation to disconnect the power for about 1 minute then try again with no luck. CoX said they tried pinging my router but could not get a reading. While waiting for them to come up with a solution, I hooked one of my PCs directly to the modem. It worked. So I tried it with the other PC. But it didn't work right away. It kept trying to dial up for a connection. I finally got the WIZARD to get it configured correctly. I assume it must be a router problem because either one of my PCs can get an internet connection when hooked to the modem. I did not pusue any further with COX, THEIR AUTOMATED TROUBLE SHOOTER WAS GETTING ON MY NERVES.Should I take the time to resolve the issue with the router or buy a new or refurbished router? If the task isn't too complicatged, I am willing to try and fix it.

I have three computers wired to it and their Host names (as specified in the set-up of each computer) show up in the router's DHCP device table. I also have two printers (one old Brother HL5250DN laser printer and one new HP Photosmart Premier C410a inkjet printer) connected and there are blanks where the Host name should go. I would like to be able to tell which printer is which when I am looking at the DHCP device table. How can I get a names associated with each printer's IP address in the router's DHCP device table? (The real problem is that the router seems to have both printers at the same IP address (192.168.1.100) and if I can get one of them to change I'd like to know which one it was!)

Dec 28, 2010I just discovered that my wireless download speeds are 5Mbps, compared to 16Mbps if my laptop is connected directly to the modem or wired through the router. Uploads are 2Mbps either way. I have a WRT54GS v.6 with firmware version v1.52.8 which I updated today, completed by setting factory default through the router webpage after I discovered this discrepancy. The firmware update did not improve the download speed appreciably, if at all.Should the wireless connection be that much slower than the wired connection through the router? If not, what sort of issues could I be having to account for this?
I did just replace my modem when I discovered I was having erratic speedtests and that corrected that problem. That is when I became aware of the wireless issue, so not sure how long that has been the case. I have Charter's 16/2 HSI, living in a sparsely populated area with solid internet service. There is no external nor internal interference on this 2.4Ghz band.

Feb 1, 2013I have a Linksys WRT54GS router that I have installed dd-wrt on.My household is overloaded with wireless devices, and living in a home of 6, speeds for everyone seem to slow down drastically later at night when everyone is simultaneously connected and streaming media -- whether it be Netflix, YouTube, etc.. My typical speed wired to the router with no other connections is around 25 mb/s down and 1-2 mb/s up.Obviously, it's going to slow to a crawl when we have an iPad, 3 iPod touches, an iPhone, a Wii (playing Netflix) and 4 PCs all connected simultaneously.What I need to do is give my personal computer priority and throttle all other devices. So that I myself will have decent speeds while hampering all of the other household connections. I rely on those speeds for my job and that should have priority over my brother watching music videos on YouTube.

Oct 25, 2007Networking isn't my strongest computer subject area, but I know I'm having a performance problem with my RV082 router. When I direct connect my PC to my cable modem, I can get very near the 7mb/sec rate advertised by my ISP. When I connect the modem to this router, then connect to the pc to the router, the speed drops to between 2-3mb/sec. All tests performed several time using dslreport.com speed test website. The result is very repeatable, so I figure it has to be some delay introduced by the router. I can't see to find any place in the router configuration to do performance tuning. I'm not using any firewall rules except for the default rules. Why I'm seeing a greater than 50% decrease in internet throughput using this router?

Feb 8, 2011I am using a Cisco RVS 4000 to test a new 10M/10M internet connection. I'm having a small problem performing the ISP's speed test (speedtest.cavtel.net). The download test consistently gives me 10Mbit/s, full speed for the connection, however the upload speed is usually about 5.5 Mbit/s. My ISP has been onsite and has checked the lines and tested directly, and we have determined that if connected directly we can test to full upload speeds, but when the RVS is connected, we cannot get full speed.
We've tried different cables, reseting to factory defaults, updating firmware, changing port settings, and toggling most of the other setting on the router. Some settings do have a minor effect on the upload speed, but nothing that gets me back up to 10Mbit/s.
I did notice that there appears to be no way to set speed and negotiation settings on the WAN port. Perhaps I am missing it, because that seems like a possible culprit.
Otherwise, the only only thing I can think of is a warranty return to determine if the unit itself is defective.
Linksys Wired Router :: E1200 Speed Test Faulty?
Dec 3, 2012I installed an E1200 router today. It automatically upgraded the firmware to the latest when I did this. Everything went smoothly.
I connected my desktop wired and my laptop wireless. I ran three different speed tests: Xfinity, speedtest, and cnet. All three showed 25-35 Mbps download and 4-5 Mbps upload. That is what my old router had too. So far, so good.
I ran the speed test that came with the E1200 router. It showed 0.30- 0.66 Mbps download and 0.58 - 2.09 Mbps upload. Note the decimal points!
Bottom line: The E1200 seems to be working fine, except that its internal speed test seems to be broken, at least when testing from a wired machine.

Jul 18, 2012I've got a 2 month old e3000 with the latest firmware. (1.04 i believe) I have run speedtests from wired and wireless machines on my network. All of the wired connections show a speed of around 15Mps (which is consistent with my providers guaranteed speed) but when I test any of the wireless connections I get somewhere between 3 and 7 Mps. I get the same degradation in speed when I stand directly next to the e3000.
Other then SSID and Passphrases I have everything set to the default settings. I have rebooted multiple times with no change. The e3000 is mounted on a 2x4 with several feet of clearance all around and is also located in the coolest part of the house. I am using Speedtest.Net for all the tests.

My downstream speed is just fine. This issue is only on wired computers, upstream speed on wireless computers is just fine.I retested router & modem several times, my upstream speed is normal when I connect cable directly from modem to my computer.Current Firmware Version is 4.30.14 build 5.
