Run Server Off Network - Hard Drive Attached To Router?

I want to know if it is possible, and how is so, to run a server OS or any hosting software from a hard drive that is networked and attached to my router and not to a computer? I currently have a mixed home network of OSes, Mac OS X SL, 2 Windows 7 machines, and various tablets and smartphones. I have a 2TB hard drive attached to an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (current generation.) The main thing I want the server for is to host for media, iTunes. The Home Sharing function is kosher for in home network use, but I would like to be able to access my media on from outside as well. Optimally I would love to have OS X server on just the drive

I recently purchased the Belkin PLAY N600 router to create a private network for my home theatre setup.I have a primary home network 192.168.0.x (NetGear) which I use for all my computing needs. I extended a network cable to my Home theatre area and plugged in the N600 router. After this, I attached a USB external hard drive to the router and it works great. I can see it from the 192.168.2.x home theatre network (Belkin).I would like to expose the USB hard drive hooked to the Belkin Router to my primary network so that I can copy over my music and pictures without having to physically move the hard driveonto a PC connected to the primary domain.The Belkin router has a DMZ function which exposes an IP on its internal (192.168.2.x)network to the external (192.168.0.103) network.Is it feasible to expose the USB drive to my primary home network?

I have mapped the attached hard drive to my EA4500 on my PC and can access folders and files on my LAN PC. However, when I come in through the Internet via an iOS device, I can see folders but when I try to enter the folder, all I get is a message that displays "|Folder|Enter Into Folder|Select|. There is no click-through capability other than "Return to Upper Folder", which takes me back to folders.

EA 4500 seems to work fine. Have a Seagate 3 TB HD connecfed to USB. Have LG Smart box connected to EA4500 by Cat5e cable. HD hard drive contents shows and accesses ok on PC via wireless. Smart box showed HD but only media files in "documents" directory, did not show "TV" & "Movies" directories.
Reset Router Media Server Access with "TV" & "Movies" directories - presto LG smarbow showed directories now and worked fine. This morning will no longer show "TV" & "Movies" directories on Smart box. Have tried deleting and resetting Router Media Server Access with "TV" & "Movies" directories several times, no luck.

I just installed this router and connected the hard drive (Western Digital 1TB) which worked fine at first. When I moved some movie files to another folder they lost all of their data. The file names are still present, but all the media files show zero bytes and are no longer usable. Is there anyway to get these files back? I have been digitizing all our movies to the tune of about 90GB. What could be going on here? I disconnected the HD from the router and plugged directly into the laptop. Still shows the file names, but each file is still at zero bytes. Not a cool way to have a media server for your house!

I recently purchased a NAS enclosure to use my WD IDE hard drive as a networked drive. I configured the hard drive's jumper setting as single (no jumper). I installed the hard drive in the enclosure and connected the Cat 5e cable to the back of the DIR-655 router. When I tried mapping to the drive, I receive the error:
\STORAGE-3B25 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Network error (1208).
I suspect perhaps that I might need to change a setting on my router to allow me to access the NAS. The NAS ip address is visible on the router's admin page and I am able to see it when searching for network drives in my laptop. But I just somehow can't connect to it. I am running Windows 7 Professional 32-bit.

I have an E4200 with a 500GB WD hard drive attached to the USB port. I also have 3 computers on the network named "THINK", "PC", and "DELL". THINK is mixed Wired and Wireless - depending on what I'm doing - Win7 Professional, DELL is plugged into a Range Extender. (RE1000) - WinXP (This one isn't as important: It's an older machine) PC is always hardwired. - Win7 Ultimate, Recently, THINK has unable to see DELL, OR even the HD connected to the router, but it can see PC. It can also see the HD as a media device - just not as a computer or device I can browse as it does on PC.However, PC can see everything: THINK, DELL, AND the HD and can access them all the way I would like it to be. Also - MY PS3 DOES see the Media Share and can access it. Edit: Also just discovered both internal and external FTP no long works. Why can't THINK see the HD connected to the router regardless if I'm wired or wireless? As far as I can tell, all the settings are identical on both THINK and PC. Is there a router setting I'm missing? IPV6 is disabled and I've treid the basic disabling of HOMEGROUP and anything that goes with it - but nothing yet.

I'm running a windows lan that connects 3 computers and a shared storage external hard drive. The whole network, including the external hard drive is connected by ethernet back to my adsl modem/router. I want to convert the external hard drive into an ftp server to enable secure file sharing on the internet by allowing remote access (for the purpose of downloading files) to anyone that I offer a username and password to.The external hard drive is a Western Digital World Edition (blue light)I believe it's a 2008 model.The adsl modem/router is a Billion Bipac 7300(G) RA.Is this doable?

I want to make the contents of my pc's hard drive available via my network (ie for use on the laptop), not just the media player library but the actual directories and files themselves. is this possible without a vpn? assuming so, how do I make it happen, and is there any way to secure this access further than just network access? I have a apple time capsule feeding into a tp link ethernet switch, connected to this i have a macbook pro, apple tv2 and a wd ethernet hard drive. I have just bought a wd firewire hard drive and would like to know how i can connect this to my "home network" as far as i can see the only way is straight into my macbook, if i do it that way will i still be able to back up onto my other drives and vice versa.

I have a Seagate 1TB USB External Hard Drive that I want to share on my wireless home network, and I'm having difficulty finding a cheap, reliable solution. I would also, ideally, like to connect a USB printer for similar sharing.I have two XP PC's on the network, and will probably be getting a Windows 7 machine.The router is the generic one supplied by my ISP.

My WLSE 1030 hard drive failed and I have replaced it with a new drive but when I boot from the 2.15 recovery CD the disc boots and runs, within the console connection I get the error "ERROR: version information not found in flash" the disc is the ejected and the system reboots.How can I reload the system software.

I'm currently in college, and do most things with my laptop, and I have wifi just about everywhere. It has a generous 500 GB of storage, but I'd like to store non-essential files on, an external hard drive. However, lugging around 3 TB of storage isn't exactly feasible, and with my experience with my current 1.5 TB portable drive, me running around everywhere with it bouncing in my bag is just going to abuse it until it stops functioning (which it has...)[URL]

I have a simple wireless network in my home run through a Linksys WRT54G Router connected to a cable modem. I set up a Western Digital 1TB external hard drive as a network drive through use of a Seagate FreeAgent DockStar. (The HD connects to the DockStar by a USB cable, which in turn connects to the router by an Ethernet cable.)
The hard drive functions as a network drive and I've configured Windows 7 Home Premium on my laptop computer to recognize it at start-up so it can essentially be used read and written to like a local drive.
Is there a way to make Windows 7, either by built-in software or third party software, automatically backup certain files or directories when changes are detected?
For example, I have a folder on my internal HD where I organize the vast amount of photos that I take so that I can easily find them through the operating system instead of having to go through a photo manager. In my ideal situation, something would be monitoring to see if I have made changes in only that folder (either adding new folders, deleting photos, or modifying files) and simultaneously make the changes to the network hard drive. Effectively, I want something to mirror the changes on my local hard drive on the fly and update the network hard drive accordingly. I do this all manually at the moment and it sucks up a lot of time that could probably be done automatically.

I have a Western Digital 500GB external hard drive and I want to know how can I share this particular drive throughout my house?Currently, it's connected via USB on my Windows 7 Ultimate desktop computer. In the medium term, I will consider getting an wireless router that has a USB port on it - so that way, I won't need to have my Windows 7 desktop computer to be on all the time - just to share my external hard drive.I also plugged in this particular external hard drive on APC backup UPS - so that way, if the power goes out - I can safely shutdown my system - until the power goes back on.As for the wireless router, I currently have the Linksys E2500 dual-band wireless N router - to share my computers with a single internet connection via Cable TV. how do I share my external hard drive on my network. I have an old computer (Dell gx280) that has a external usb 2.0 hard drive connected to it. I was trying to copy the files over a gigabit network connection to another computer and it was only transferring at approx. 2.5 megabytes a second. This was only using a small fraction of the gigabit network card in both the source and destination computer. I saw the CPU was maxed out on the source PC b/c of an application. Once I quit that application the CPU usage went back to essentially nothing. The copy job then jumped up to 14 megabytes a second and was using 30-35% of the gigabit connection.
The NIC and the USB ports are on the motherboard. How did the CPU usage slow this whole process down and was it impacting the network card, the USB port or both?

I replaced my router with a Motorola Surfboard cable modem/router combo. Since then I cannot access my backup hard drive (buffalo linkstation 250g about 8 yrs old). Everything worked fine before I replaced the router.The only thing I have on my network is my HP laptop, vonage box and hard drive. Windows 7, Explorer 9.Router: 192.168.0.1 HD: 192.168.1.150I've tried "tracert" and only get back the router address. I've tried connecting directly from my laptop to the HD and tried the ip instead of the 'name'. I replaced the cables, rebooted the laptop, router and hard drive. I also went through the whole "add devices" on "devices and printers" and "search network for devices"

I have a Netgear Rangemax Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router (model WNDR3700). I used to live in a small place so I connected my external hard drive direct to my laptop. However, now that I have a bigger place i want to connect the ext hard drive to the router so I can take my computer where I want. However, I cannot connect the hard drive to the router. I can plug it into the router, of course, but it will not appear under the Network folders (I use Window's Vista).

My desktop internet was working fine earlier today. I bought a new hard drive and installed it without any trouble. I plugged my machine back in and received a "no internet connection" message. I have tried (what I think is) everything: unplugged my modem and router and plugged it back in as if it was the first time with the 60 second pauses and whatnot; tested the connection with my cable modem service provider; unplugged and checked cable connections; did ipconfig/flushdns ... I'm really not sure where to go from here.My wireless configuration works fine, as I am able to connect both wirelessly and wired to the router on my laptop. I cannot connect via the modem or router to my desktop PC.Windows 7 running 64-bit, Motorola Surfboard modem (brand new), Medialink router (also brand new), custom built machine.

I have my router setup fine to the internet, as well as the media server. I can't figure out how to access the hard drive from my laptop, however. The manual says put 192.168.1.1 in the address field of windows explorer, but it just gives me the "Setup" page for the router.

I'm looking to be able to access (read and write) a networked external hard drive which is connected to a home router - specifically the Netgear WNDR3400, which has a USB port explicitly for this purpose - from outside the network, via the internet. This is for work purposes (specifically for a small business that I design for). Is this doable? I've been using Dropbox but that's proving too problematic as more and more files need to be managed. I would prefer it not be through software that has to be running on a computer, as there is no "machine" running 24/7 here besides the router itself.

I recently copied files to my hard drive that was connected directly to my computer (via USB).When I connected the disk back to E3000 the files were missing. I connected it back to PC directly and verified the files are there.My PC runs Windows 7 Enterprise.Why can't I see files copied via local connection when I connect the disk to E3000.I carefully compared the permissions with files that I can see just fine and there is no difference - same permissions, same owner.I also get all kinds of permission errors when I try to delete a files from the network drive.
