Linksys Wireless Router :: Accessing Files On Attached Hard Drive To EA4500
Sep 2, 2012
I have mapped the attached hard drive to my EA4500 on my PC and can access folders and files on my LAN PC. However, when I come in through the Internet via an iOS device, I can see folders but when I try to enter the folder, all I get is a message that displays "|Folder|Enter Into Folder|Select|. There is no click-through capability other than "Return to Upper Folder", which takes me back to folders.

I recently copied files to my hard drive that was connected directly to my computer (via USB).When I connected the disk back to E3000 the files were missing. I connected it back to PC directly and verified the files are there. My PC runs Windows 7 Enterprise. Why can't I see files copied via local connection when I connect the disk to E3000.I carefully compared the permissions with files that I can see just fine and there is no difference - same permissions, same owner.I also get all kinds of permission errors when I try to delete a files from the network drive.

EA 4500 seems to work fine. Have a Seagate 3 TB HD connecfed to USB. Have LG Smart box connected to EA4500 by Cat5e cable. HD hard drive contents shows and accesses ok on PC via wireless. Smart box showed HD but only media files in "documents" directory, did not show "TV" & "Movies" directories.
Reset Router Media Server Access with "TV" & "Movies" directories - presto LG smarbow showed directories now and worked fine. This morning will no longer show "TV" & "Movies" directories on Smart box. Have tried deleting and resetting Router Media Server Access with "TV" & "Movies" directories several times, no luck.

I just installed this router and connected the hard drive (Western Digital 1TB) which worked fine at first. When I moved some movie files to another folder they lost all of their data. The file names are still present, but all the media files show zero bytes and are no longer usable. Is there anyway to get these files back? I have been digitizing all our movies to the tune of about 90GB. What could be going on here? I disconnected the HD from the router and plugged directly into the laptop. Still shows the file names, but each file is still at zero bytes. Not a cool way to have a media server for your house!

I bought a seagate USB hard drive today from Target. Its a 2TB and I was going to use it via USB attached to my router. I connected it and the Linksys firmware detected it and I was able to create the appropriate folders on the drive for storage through the linksys GUI.My issue is that I am now trying to move my movies and tv shows over to the drive and it isn't allowing me to do that.
I get an error message that says "You don't have access to //myshare. contact your administrator".
I'm not sure why I was able to create folders on this drive but am unable to move files to it. Makes no sense to me. Write permission is write permission no?My machine which currently stores the media files is windows7 utimate. The router is E3000 using up to date stock firmware.

I want to know if it is possible, and how is so, to run a server OS or any hosting software from a hard drive that is networked and attached to my router and not to a computer? I currently have a mixed home network of OSes, Mac OS X SL, 2 Windows 7 machines, and various tablets and smartphones. I have a 2TB hard drive attached to an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (current generation.) The main thing I want the server for is to host for media, iTunes. The Home Sharing function is kosher for in home network use, but I would like to be able to access my media on from outside as well. Optimally I would love to have OS X server on just the drive

I recently purchased the Belkin PLAY N600 router to create a private network for my home theatre setup.I have a primary home network 192.168.0.x (NetGear) which I use for all my computing needs. I extended a network cable to my Home theatre area and plugged in the N600 router. After this, I attached a USB external hard drive to the router and it works great. I can see it from the 192.168.2.x home theatre network (Belkin).I would like to expose the USB hard drive hooked to the Belkin Router to my primary network so that I can copy over my music and pictures without having to physically move the hard driveonto a PC connected to the primary domain. The Belkin router has a DMZ function which exposes an IP on its internal (192.168.2.x)network to the external (192.168.0.103) network. Is it feasible to expose the USB drive to my primary home network?

This is troubling and I don't know why it is happening. For some odd reason files seemingly related to my DIR-655 are being put in the root directory of my hard drive on my Power Mac G5 running Leopard 10.5.8. Two preference files and a folder named ''D-Link'' and another folder named ''Shareport.''Why is this happening? I have given D-Link/DIR-655 no access to my hard drive.Furthermore, why this is only happening on that machine while my MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.7 is not being ''invaded.''

I am going back to college and I will need a router. Both my roommate and I were on the same router went over our bandwidth usage a number of times last year. I've done a bit of research and have come up with a few options: Asus rt-n56u, netgear wndr 4500, and the apple airport extreme. Both my desktop and laptop pc so I'm not sure if that effects the outcome. I am going to need a usb port for an ext hdd, which all of them have. All of the routers have a 5hz signal for better streaming. Would I be able to use the apple airport? It seems the have the best reviews. But I question the compatibility and some of the reviews due to possible fanboyism. Also, If I connect my desktop to the router via a crossover cable and have an ext hdd hooked into the router can I transfer files to the ext hdd and stream that data over a 5 hz signal?

I have an EA-4500. Unfortunately I often have to hard-reset it:
- every time I update the firmware (last time I updated to 2.1.38.138827 via Cisco Connect Cloud)
- sometimes whenever there is a black-out
The first time it happened upon the automic firmware update which released Connect Cloud. In such cases, the router stays with the white Cisco logo on and no other lights work (i.e. the ethernet lights on the rear side of the router are off). The only reset procedure working is: unplug Internet cable, press reset for 30 secs, turn off while keeping reset pressed, wait 30 more seconds, turn on again always keeping the reset pressed.
I've tried to turn off for 2 minutes but it doesn't work. The strange thing is that the above reset procedure does not always work, sometimes I have to do it like 10 times before the router Cisco logo light starts blinking on and off (like breathing).
Besides this, which is very very annoying, I'm satisfied with router functionalities and performance.

I have an E4200 with a 500GB WD hard drive attached to the USB port. I also have 3 computers on the network named "THINK", "PC", and "DELL". THINK is mixed Wired and Wireless - depending on what I'm doing - Win7 Professional, DELL is plugged into a Range Extender. (RE1000) - WinXP (This one isn't as important: It's an older machine) PC is always hardwired. - Win7 Ultimate, Recently, THINK has unable to see DELL, OR even the HD connected to the router, but it can see PC. It can also see the HD as a media device - just not as a computer or device I can browse as it does on PC.However, PC can see everything: THINK, DELL, AND the HD and can access them all the way I would like it to be. Also - MY PS3 DOES see the Media Share and can access it. Edit: Also just discovered both internal and external FTP no long works. Why can't THINK see the HD connected to the router regardless if I'm wired or wireless? As far as I can tell, all the settings are identical on both THINK and PC. Is there a router setting I'm missing? IPV6 is disabled and I've treid the basic disabling of HOMEGROUP and anything that goes with it - but nothing yet.

I had previously posted about problems with the E1550 not being able to recognize NTFS formated hard drives. After multiple retries and reformats I was finally able to get it to work and was able to backup my system files to that NTFS hard drive.
Now, little more than a week later I setup to run my backup to run again and once again the E1550 is not accessing the hard drive. The same one it had previously acknowledged and allowed me to save to.
The E1550 sees that there is a hard drive out there but all it says is "Detecting..." this does not change.
I need this to be fixed and stay fixed. If it is going to do this every time I turn on the drive to do weekly backups, then I need to get a different wireless router.

I have realized that E4200 V1 I have, with 1.03 firmware, seems to be dying when I reboot it and it tries to load the USB HD I have connected to it. By die I mean the web server does not work anymore (http://192.168.1.1), and new computers can't connect to the router. I suspect it is due to the amount of files I have in the External Disk Drive -I used to have Media Server enabled, but I disabled it because this problem was happening, and I only left File Server enabled. Now since I moved many of my pictures to it, it seems even File Server is causing problems, and if neither one work for me, then this router does not justify its money, since that was the only reason I bought this E4200 hardware. These problems are solved in V2? Since it is still under warranty, I could try to exchange my V1 for a V2 version.

My E4200 works beautifully, and was working fine with the Toshiba 500 GB portable drive that I had on it for a week or so. I tried to plug in my WD MyBook Essential (Passed on the list of compatible drives), but the router is not detecting it. Further, when the drive is plugged in, the router stops receiving new wireless connections. Even if I reboot a laptop that was previously connected, it says that that the passkey is incorrect. When the drive is plugged in, I can't even log in to the 192.168.1.1 - it's as if the router creates a firewall around it and refuses every new connection on every port.

I just bought a Linksys E4200 from bestbuy tonight, mostly for the feature of plugging my hard drive into it to use it as a media server, and being able to read & write to it from any computer on my network. I have searched for hours on end trying to fix my problem. I login to my router (at 192.168.1.1), I go to the storage tab, I then click the "Create Share" button next to my WD hard drive in the list and nothing happens. Ive tried this on four different computers, and three different browsers now to no avail.
Some random information:
Computer: Dell XPS 420
Router: Linksys E4200
Hard Drive: WD 1TB

I have a 1TB Western Digital drive connected to my home EA4500 router. Connecting to media server using SMB protocol (192.168.1.1) works fine. I am moving abroad for an extended amount of time, though, so I would also like to connect to this USB drive using FTP. Using the new Cisco Connect Cloud interface, I have enabled FTP sharing for the USB storage device with port 21 and using standard UTF-8 encoding. Whenever I try to connect to the FTP server using my router login credentials, I get the following error message:"There was a problem connecting to the server xx.xxx.xxx.xx. This file server will not allow any additional users to log on. Try to connect again later"

I am using a LinkSys Model: WRT54G Version: 6 wireless router configured to use WEP.I have two computers, the main desktop and a laptop for mobile operation. How do I configure the LinkSys to allow the laptop to access a external (mapped) USB drive on the desktop?
The laptop can access the mapped drive on the desktop when it is hardwired to the LinkSys (i.e., not wireless) but I cannot find a reference in the Pdf manual or online on how to access the drive on the desktop from the laptop when the laptop is connected via the WiFi.The desktop is running XpSp3 and the laptop is Vista.A second and more important question is should I do this. Can the accessing of the drive via the WiFi be done with adequate security. I would rather err on the side of caution.

I just now installed a new EA4500 Router. It installed itself automatically without a problem, by running the setup CD. No devices other than my hard wired computer and modem are connected yet.
When I went into Start > Cisco Connect to look around and check it's version, etc., I immediately got a "There's an important update for your router" notice. My concern is not wanting to install The Cloud at this time (although I wouldn't rule it out later). There has not been a trace of it so far.
I currently have Firmware Version: 2.0.36.126507 and Software Version: 1.4.12100.0. What this Important Update may be? Is it the "dreaded" Cloud? I'd rather avoid the whole rolling back to pre-Cloud issue for now, if possible.

I bought an EA 3500 refurbished through linksys. I can't configurate it using the CD-Rom. Always said "can't find your router". So I flash with the classic firmware, and it fixs the problem and automatically upgrade to smart Wi-Fi. That being said, whenever I plug in a portable hard drive, the router disconnect from internet after a minute. I tried my seagate HDD and also my flash driver. Both Lost internet after a minute or so. So I think it is probably the router's problem.

I have a E4200 router, and I had previously plugged in a small external hard drive just to test the functionality. The router seemed to recognize the storage, and the computers on the network could see it as a shared drive. Now I have plugged in a Seagate 7200 internal hard drive inside a Rocketfish enclosure, but the router is not recognizing anything. I just upgraded the firmware to 1.0.04, but there was no change. Are there problems using an enclosure rather than just plugging in an external hard drive?

I had an Iomega 1TB External Hard Drive connected to my E4200 router. I had shares confgured and they were properly running on the network.
As of yesterday, this all stopped working. The router does not see the drive; it is as though it is not plugged in.
I rebooted the router and it still does not work. I've connected the hard drive directly to my PC to verify that it works there, and it does. The router is running Ver.1.0.03 (Build 14) of firmware (the latest).
