TP-Link TD-W8960N - How To Use Thomson Speed Touch TG587nv2 As Secondary Wireless Repeater
Feb 10, 2012
I am using a TP-Link TD-W8960N as my main router with ADSL connection. It works fine but on the top floor our signal is pretty low. I want to us the Thomson SpeedTouch TG587nv2 (O2 Wireless box IV) as a secondary wireless repeater. I can't use a ethernet cable between them. I want to make a wireless bridge or use WDS.

AOL are a complete waste of time and space in my opinion as for one you cannot understand what there tech support is saying and even when you email there tech support they seem to answer with a totally different answer to my questions.I have just installed a pci card ethernet connection on my pc windows xp now all I want to now do is connect and configure my router on the internet, I currently use aol dial.bb broadband adsl connection so far there are no connections from the router connected to my pc as i am still using a bt voyager 105 modem. When i did connect the ethernet cable to my pc and into the router also i connected the adsl cable into the back of the router but aol have not explained how to connect to the internet to configure this router and get it to work.

Ok, so i never had problems with this before until i reformatted my computer. I have used a program called simple port forwarding and i've also manually added the port seeing if theres a difference, but every time i check my port which is 25565 for a minecraft server it says either failed or not open etc.. I checked netstat -an and it showed it was listening to my ip address and port 25565.

Just got myself a new Modem/Router (TD-W8960N), and it wasn't until I had it all up and running that I realised it didn't have USB port on the back.Anyways, I was wondering how I could go about fixing this? I stumbled upon this (TP-Link TD-8817) on Amazon and wasn't sure if I could attach this to it in bridged mode or something. This has the USB socket I need. If this was all I needed, how do they connect together? I have a BT connection btw. Also, I have a Justop Android 4.0 TV Box (media player). Would this be able to see the HDD for streaming movies.

According to the manual, when I go to edit my WAN connection, I should be able to enable/disable the SPI firewall. However, on my firmware I get no such option. My SPI firewall is always enabled.
I would like to be able to completely disable it when I'm testing so that I can ensure the firewall is not interfering with my tests.

First a bit of background. At the end of December, my centurylink modem finally had enough problems with disconnects(was 6 or 7 years old), and Centurylink sent out a new router/modem. The new modem/router, a Zyxel, worked great, and all was good in my house hold. Then I got the bill and found out that unlike the previous modem they had sent me, this one I was paying a lease payment for. At which point I returned the Zyxel which gave us the best service we'd ever had, and bought this TD-W8960N. The reviews were glowing, setup was easy, but we started rather quickly to have disconnects. A call was made to Centurylink and they confirmed service was working, and since the modem/router was not theirs, referred us back to you. I called and after considerable time on the phone, all I was basically told to do was a hard reset to the modem. When the unit finished booting back up, internet was restored. Of course it was restored everytime we reset it for a while. At that point I was told that since the unit was working, that there was nothing left to be done. Since that time, it has disconnected us from time to time, and then in the last 2 days, sometimes it won't stay connected for more than a couple of minutes. My wife is very unhappy-she is a gamer, and a disconnecting internet is very very bad for an online gamer.
It seems that the further it gets away from a hard reset, the more it disconnects. After 6 soft resets (unplugging) today, I had to do another hard reset to get back on to register here and post this message. Is this a known problem for this unit? Is there a fix for this unit? Or, do I just need to return it to Newegg and try another manufacturer?
Again, the "leased" Zyxel gave us no problems for the month or so that we used it.

How to successfully get VPN passthrough working with the W8960N?
I have the W8960N providing internet to local device. I want to setup a second router, TP-Link 1043ND with WW-DRT and PPTP set up to provide a separate access point for PPTP tunnelling to VPN servers outside of the UK. HideMyAss are providing VPN servers I wish to connect to.
I have followed instruction to set up both routers but would like to know if I am missing something.
First router 192.168.1.1 is basically untouched but with ports under NAT added: ports 1723 and 47 for my second router at local IP 192.168.1.111
Second router is set up according to [URL].
I know VPN work via just my first router. I can tunnel through using an Android tablet and connect to any HMA VPN server without changing anything on the 8960N.

I've been having some issues with my BT Broadband for a while, so decided to switch to a new router, a TP TD-W8960N, however setting up QOS isn't as easy as I had anticipated (I'm fairly new to this!).
My main issue is that we have a fairly limited broadband connection, but I need to backup work using backblaze. This is a pain because as soon as it starts to backup it eats what bandwidth we have. What I want to know is can I just limit the range of ip-addresses which they use for their backup? Is there a simpler auto-QOS approach I could use? The router is currently running the latest firmware that isn't in beta. Also - do these routers auto-update firmware?

I purchased this TD-W8960N cause I thought it was a powerful beast, but it is not unless mine it is defective. On my mobile phone it shows -25 to -30 dBm at less than 10 inches away from the router antennas. In some places at home my phone disconnects when the signal drops below -70bm, however my laptop it is always connected because of the better antenna.
That's fine BUT, I installed my old Linksys WRT54G and the phone shows -3dB at the same distance from the antennas. Or is it that I overvalued the TP-LINK?Does anyone have compared signals with other routers. Should I assume that mi router is defective? Any trick to squeeze more power other than replacing antennas?

I have a router supplied by my ISP which is effectively locked down, the wireless on that router give me a massive 35 Mbps (yes i know... awesome) so I wanted to get something that would allow me to stream movies wirelessly in the house. The setup I had before was Thompson DSL router downstairs (ISP router) running the DSL connection and Wireless, a TP-Link 200Mbps Power over Ethernet connecting upstairs to a Netgear ADSL Wireless router (somewhat flaky device). This router had DHCP disabled and a static IP address, I had configured wireless with the same SSID, password and channel as the ISP router and they were all happy and everything was working (most of the time except when the netgear would crash or the 35MB wifi was too slow to achieve what I wanted).
What I would like to do is this... ISP router downstairs with wifi disabled so it just handles DHCP and DSL connection, router upstairs (New TP-Link) running new WiFi, DHCP disabled (static IP address for Router) but connected to router downstairs through TP-Link Power over Ethernet.
I was hoping it was as simple as the Netgear router where disabling DHCP was enough for it to see the other router and just work but it isn't doing that
I can ping the ISP router but cannot get to the internet,

In the past everything was working fine (had same computer connected wireless + wire) never had this disconnection. Now, I have a laptop connected using wireless & desktop wired but this disconnection is becoming so irritating. It is not only that I lose the internet connection, I lose the DSL like (as if the modem is turned off then on) and all my files over the LAN are either lost during transmission or something else.

All working well except Net Radio on my Yamaha AV amp. When attempting to listen message receive 'access error' never had this with Linksys router. The amp has been setup with the internal lan gateway address and used dns from talk talk detail. IP has a static IP address . I have tried placing amp in dmz address which didn't work also tried port forwarding 8000 - 8001 which someone said was the port used for yam net radio. none of this works. Never had to do any of this before simply used local gateway address and local internal dns from the old router and always worked with tp - link just cannot get it to go.
Tried lots of variation gateway and dns addresses none which worked...

I have an Optus Home Zone (mobile cell tower) that requires ports open.
Port
123 UDP
500 UDP
4500 UDP
I have assigned the Home Zone a Static IP outside the DHCP range and set the above Ports on the NAT, Virtual servers to that IP address.
I have used nmap to scan the ports and it provides open/filtered status for all of them.
Here is the kicker for me, i use a DGN3500 netgear (which keeps dropping WiFi hence its replacement) and enter the ports and it works straight away. Un plug and put the Tp-Link and nothing.
I use Eset Smart Security, could that be the problem?

I enter the key and hit connect again, it comes up with the 'Connecting' pop-up and then loops back to the Available Networks screen again. There are no error messages, it just goes back to the starting screen and it hasnt connected. The Laptop in question is a Lenovo T60 with a Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG card. The router is a TP-Link TD-W8960N.

I just bought a v3 TD-W8960N and I'm trying to see what is the latest firmware available? On the modem it came with 1.4.0 Build 111130 Rel.56405n.When I look on the website the listed latest version is w8960nv1_un_1_4_0_111108R40398.up (that is the file inside the zip package/link TD-W8960N_V1_V3_111108)Which is the newer version? I am having a rather annoying problem. I run a small hotel (just 3 floors) and my modem gives a strong enough signal to provide wireless access to everybody in the house however I'm finding that a lot of people, whilst they can connect to the modem, cannot browse online. Connection just times out when they open their browsers.Recently a guest gave me his laptop and asked me if I could do anything with it. I'm by no means an expert when it comes to this kind of thing so I chanced my arm by putting his MAC address into the CP's Wireless/MAC Filter page. He connected immediately and was able to go online much to my relief.
Thing is, I don't want to have to do this for every guest that comes through my door! Is there any way everybody who has a laptop can connect without me manually entering their MAC addresses? MAC restrict mode is set to 'disabled' but I thought that would allow everybody unrestricted access?

We have a WDS connection between two AP541 access points, where one AP is connected to a SA540 with cable. The AP in the other end of the WDS does just act as a repeater, broadcasting using the same SSID and channel with WPA-PSK, as the cabled AP. For the WDS channel, we have tried WPA/WEP/none encryption without any difference. Spanning tree is enabled. 802.11 mode is 'bgn'.
Sitting physically beside the remote AP (the "other" and uncabled end of WDS) with a laptop using Intel 802.11bg adapter, we get a speed in the range 5-7Mbit/sec connecting to the cabled AP (3 of 5 bars signal strength in the traybar icon on Win7). But switching to the remote AP, which is beeing feed by the WDS from the same cabled AP previously being connected to, we do just get a measured bandwidth of 1-2Mbit/sec. I understand that some throughput is lost using WDS, but this does still look like a big decrease?Any experience using WDS with AP541, who can comment on if this is expected or not, and eventually any thing we can do to increase the speed?
