Unable To Map Drive On Xp Box
Sep 28, 2011
Odd issue with a Win XP PC with SP3 in a company network. The computer can browse to the network shares using the UNC path via the run command, but can not map a network drive to the same path. Explorer says the path is not valid or can't be found, but the account has no issues accessing the share via the UNC path. At one point this worked fine as there are existing drive mappings on the computer, but none of them work any longer saying the the location is unavailable.

I'll start by explaining my setup. I have my desktop computer running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I have a home server running Windows Home Server 2011 Vail. I am trying to map a network drive from Windows 7 to the hard drive in Windows Home Server. The issue is, I'm unable to set permissions.
I setup the share by right clicking the drive and click "Sharing", then advanced sharing. Click permissions, and add my username (HOMESERVERKeith), and give the account full permissions. Hit apply a couple of thousand times. I go to my desktop, right click computer and click "Map Network Drive..." and fill in all the details. Folder is set to HOMESERVERMovies HDD. Because the user "everybody" doesn't have permission, I click "connect using different credentials." For the username I type in "HOMESERVERKeith", and of course type the password. I don't get an error, the login box just shows itself again. There is no permission error, no incorrect password, it just prompts for another login.

I've spent several hours trying to see if it's even worth trying to upgrade my old Thinkpad i1400, which has Windows 98 and only a modem internet connection. Obviously in today's world it's wireless or nothing. So...I've read that I could upgrade to Windows 98SE, and on [url]... the used disk is only about $15. I also read that 98SE has a lot of glitches. However, I already have an XP disk (don't know how I got it) but it may be corrupted, because it never finishes the installation on the thinkpad---goes completely blank after about 10 minutes. One problem is the limited hard disk space on the i1400 --- about 2.5 GB for both the C and D drives respectively. There is less than 1 GB on the C drive free and XP takes up almost 800 MB. I'm afraid to wipe clean Win98 and replace it with XP, and for some reason I can't install XP to the D drive. Even if I could accomplish this, will XP be the magic bullet that gets me wireless on this dinosaur of a laptop?

Two physical drives. Drive 0 has two partitions C and D. C is operating system (XP Pro) and D is data only. Drive 1 has one partition F and is used for internal backup. Drive F can be set to be shared. Partition D on Drive 0 will not accept sharing. It reverts back to the $D admin share after setting up a new share. The icon (hand) that indicates shared drive does not appear either. I assume there is a registry setting that has drive 1 blocked, but am unable to find it.

I bought a seagate USB hard drive today from Target. Its a 2TB and I was going to use it via USB attached to my router. I connected it and the Linksys firmware detected it and I was able to create the appropriate folders on the drive for storage through the linksys GUI.My issue is that I am now trying to move my movies and tv shows over to the drive and it isn't allowing me to do that.
I get an error message that says "You don't have access to //myshare. contact your administrator".
I'm not sure why I was able to create folders on this drive but am unable to move files to it. Makes no sense to me. Write permission is write permission no?My machine which currently stores the media files is windows7 utimate. The router is E3000 using up to date stock firmware.

I'm currently in college, and do most things with my laptop, and I have wifi just about everywhere. It has a generous 500 GB of storage, but I'd like to store non-essential files on, an external hard drive. However, lugging around 3 TB of storage isn't exactly feasible, and with my experience with my current 1.5 TB portable drive, me running around everywhere with it bouncing in my bag is just going to abuse it until it stops functioning (which it has...)[URL]

I am currently using a backup program that I thought would back up from any location including a NAS drive but this is not the case. The backup program does not show the NAS drive directory... I was just wondering if there is a way of making a NAS drive appear as a local drive. I've mapped the drive and created symbolic links for it as well and it still does not appear. I was planning on using the iSCSI method but I believe my NAS does not support it.

We have a user that works from home and connects to our network through a VPN when she needs to access files on our server (mapped as a shared drive.)I created a new shared folder on that same server and she can't map a drive to it. It just continuously prompts for username/password.She is running Win 7 Pro, server is Server 2008. The server is on a domain, she is not. She already has a mapped drive to a different folder on the same server as well as to a folder on another server. We are trying to map using the IP address (\IPFolder) and have tried putting the username as IPUsername and just Username with no luck. Tried mapping with net use. Found some stuff online about changing some registry values - tried that. Change the network type from "Home" to "Work" and still no luck.

Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."And its only on my pc this happens, on all the other pcs its working fine. And from my pc I can map any other shared folder/drive.

I have a 1TB internal SATA HD that I want to turn into a network drive. Since the MB in the desktop I had this drive in fried, I'm looking for options to network this drive (that stores photos, music, utilities, etc). So far after brief research, looks like my most reliable option would be an external enclosure with USB and a router with a USB share port.
-what other options do I have?
-what would be a good wireless N/G router with a USB share port, great range or range extender option and can handle multiple devices online (xbox, ps3, wii, droid phones, 2x or more laptops, wifi Tv all not connected at once, but a few can be, so I need a router to handle the demand)
-a good reliable external enclosure
I need a router that has a good strong signal. The current G router I have (d-link di-524(?)) works ok, but the signal cuts out in the kitchen and virtually non-existent in my garage (to use Pandora on phone).

I shared a cd-player on a different pc and am able to access it as a shared folder. I tried copying the files to my HD and making aan ISO out of em. This worked, but my Virtual Machines(VMware Player & Oracle VM VirtualBox) don't detect it as a windows install, also tried to mount this ISO. detect the original XP cd with one of these VM's. But in order for this to work I have to make my system think that the cd-player on the other pc is part of the local setup,

Any way to enable the USB port of a TV to access video files held on a NAS drive?
My aim is to access the drive via wifi or ethernet.
Presumably it would need to present the drive as a mass storage device to the TV's USB port since that's basically what the port picks up.
The TV does not support DLNA and I'm trying to avoid having to buy a separate media player e.g. WD Live TV box.
