TP-Link TL-WR1043ND - Extend Network Via Power Line Adapters Or Second Router
Nov 23, 2012
My situation is as follows: A modem in the hallway closet with an internet connection via a coax cable. A living room with an i Mac and a Philips PFL9604 TV connected to the wireless network. The wireless network is provided by a new TP- Link TL-WR1043ND router which is setup next to the modem.
I would like to do the following:
Stream content such as HD movies, shows etc from the i Mac to the TV. Use the TV to watch missed shows with the apps on the TV via internet. Make use of the internet speed upgrade (75 - 150 m bit/s) which will come in a few months. However the signal of the router currently isn't strong enough to maintain a stable connection since it's too far away. The distance from the router to the TV and the i Mac is 12 meters and 6 meters with a wall in between as well. Now I can't move the modem from the hallway closet else the signal to the modem will be too weak nor can I wire an utp cable from the hallway to the living room and put the router there.
I have come up with two possible options now:
Use power line adapters by plugging one into the hallway socket and one in the living room so I can put the router there.
I currently have these power line adapter to try out, however my internet connection occasionally drops while using these adapters. Take the old WRT54GL router or a second TP- Link TL-WR1043ND and use WDS to create 1 network and have good coverage in the living room. The i Mac and TV can then be connected via Ethernet cables to the second router if necessary. I assume it would be best to place the second router closest to the first one for the strongest signal.
The second options seems the best to me as the power line adapters don't seem very promising based on my experience so far. I would like to know if connecting two routers is a viable method to obtain good and stable coverage in the living room?

Two of us were using power line adapters to connect to the router. We had no problems whatsoever. Then my other friend got a power line adapter and starte connecting that way too. Then pretty much both mine and his stopped working. Yet my other friend can still use his no problem.I ran and ipconfig /all and I'm noticing that its not giving me a default gateway address. I tried inputting it manually and still nothing. My windows 7 pc keeps saying it can't identify the network.I also have this problem when I try connecting my Xbox and he has the same issues with his ps3.Yet we can both connect wirelessly with no problems. The router in question is a Netgear N300+.

(My router says Version 1.9).Had this router about a month. It works fine. Using it in Wireless mode wpa2 security. Get excellent speeds. HOWEVER> It freqently drops connectivity and fails to allow wireless clients to connect at all. (You can see the SSID via wireless clients, but not connect to it). To restore it, I have to disconnect from Power, wait a moment, then reconnect to power. It recycles and connections are working again with no problems (UNTIL NEXT TIME). Seems to happen every few days.
I checked the web site and I appear to have the most current firmware.I have a Trendnet router on different channels in another part of the house which has never had this problem. I disconnected it to test if it was somehow involved, but the TP-Link router had same symptoms when it (trendnet) was not connected. Our Actiontec Router (VERIZON provides this as base connectin to them serving the Cable TV DVRs also) ) has its wireless disabled and is the DHCP server provider to the home network. DHCP is disabled on the TP Link.

I have got a TP link wireless router connected by TP link power line ethernet adapters connected to my sky box, one to Samsung Smart TV, which both work fine the third I have connected to my computer. This shows up as as a local area connection but with no internet access. I have similar problems to other people with internet access dropping out after installing Windows * and had hoped an ethernet connection would be more stable. Any thoughts on why I can't connect to the internet via my powerline adapter.

I have a wireless router (TP-Link) which I want to use to extend my wired dorm room cable connection. The "blue" network cable currently goes straight into my laptop and I have no control over its configuration. Is it possible to plug the blue cable into the WAN port of my router and then wire the computer back into a LAN port?BUT that's not really the major problem. Mainly I would like to know how the router must be configured to allow me to use other wireless devices in my room (phone printer etc).Someone told me that I "just" need to use the "bridge" setting but that turned out to be complicated by warnings and messages about other SSIDs.Is "bridge" really the right mode? It seems it's for connecting two wireless networks together.

I've recently upgraded my internet provider to BT and received a BT Home Hub 3 as the new wireless router.Previous to this I was using a wireless Belkin G + MIMO ADSL router (model number F5D9630-4).There are places in the house where the wireless signal is very poor. Connecting to the internet using either of these routers is difficult in these spots. However, since the Belkin is now spare, I've been thinking about trying to use it as a low cost repeater (i.e. free) to extend the wireless range in the house. There are several good articles that I've found on this site which address the connection of two routers together (e.g. John Will's article on connecting two SOHO routers is a good example), but they rely on an ethernet connection between the two routers. Any way to establish a wireless link between the two routers to extend the range of the current wireless network.

set up the wireless network at a friend's house, which is a large solid-brick house that winds from one end to the other. The current location of where the cable comes into the house is unfortunately on the far-left end of the house, which means that the right end of the house receives no signal from their DIR-825 wireless N router.
What I've been looking into is the best way to wirelessly extend the wireless signal to the other end of the house. It seems straightforward enough to use an ethernet cable and access point to extend a wireless network, but that is not really a good option for this house. After reading many forum posts (and not being an expert myself) it seems like it may be possible to wirelessly extend the wireless network with another router, although it appeared that this is much less common (if at all possible) with wireless N routers.
what device I need to accomplish what I've described above? Another router, or some kind of access point/bridge? I saw at least one rather expensive wireless N repeater online (a Hawking brand, I believe) but was hoping to avoid that option initially, but if that is the only way to go then so be it :-)

I'm having to reboot what is now my 2nd router every 1-2 days in order for all connections to resume working. My 2nd router was working great since Saturday afternoon, and just now I needed to reboot in order for my laptop to connect to the network. Now that it seems pretty clear the router in general isn't faulty, I suspected that the issue was IP lease related, so I was looking at DHCP settings and changed the lease time to 2880 (max setting), from 120 (default). However, this should only prolong how often i'll need to reboot the router. So, what is it that's causing my devices to disconnect or not being able to connect to the router for a prolonged period of time?

I've just installed DD-WRT (DD-WRT v24-sp2 build 21676) into my TP-Link (TL-WR1043ND) router. I've setup port forwarding for port 80 to my machine port 80 and it works well under LAN access (checked from my PC and cellphone connected to LAN).
I'm trying to access the testing server from outside through a web proxy, and other sites that check whether my public IP is up, but I can't figure out why I'm unable to access from outside while LAN access is fine.Server is on OS X Mountain Lion with disabled firewall.
I've find it strange to not have an Hairpin NAT issue (I'm able to access the server from LAN through the public WAN address), which is generally a common problem, but still, have this issue.
I've used a web based port scanner and it tells my serving port (9999, not 80) is open (other ports are not), even though I'm unable to browse it.I've learned people can access my server on 9999 port from outside! Now I don't understand why I'm unable to access it with the web proxy tools I've tried.
How can I check, from my machine, that It's serving content correctly, with some online tool or proxy that would access it from outside?

I have installed my new E4200 and it works beautifully. I have several wirelss adapters and a few wired connections through powerline adapters. I also have a second VPN router attached to the 4200.I can see the wireless connected devices with the associated IP addresses. If I plug a laptop directly into the Cisco, I can of course see it.However, I can see none of the devices attatched to the powerline devices? I have a securty cam connected via the powerline and want to know the IP address. I checked with cisco technical support via chat and they said it is impossible. I have used 2 previous routers with the same configuration and can see all devices.

Every 5 to 7 days my router loses connection with WAN (ISP modem) but connection over LAN is fine. It seems that 1043ND tries to connect to DSL modem from AT&T by username and password (that does not exists) instead of doing Dynamic IP. I understand that AT&T modem is of type of PPPoE but there is not a password or user id and connection must be dynamic. Page 192.168.0.1/logininfo of modem complains that I was trying to login with incorrect user id password. Every time I have to
1- connect the modem directly to my computer so the modem resets.
2- I have to reset 1043ND to factory default, reboot, and connect cables back how they were, Then go to WAN page do a release and renew to get connected to WAN again.

I have a flaky internet connection, and it drops every few days. I've thus far powercycled my router by unplugging and plugging it back in, which fixes the issue.
I'm traveling soon, and would like to be able to have access to my stuff remotely, even after the connection drops.
I have two ideas:Run a script in Windows 7 which would soft reboot the modem - free, not sure if soft reboot is enough though. If that doesn't work, Get a hardware which would powercycle the router - haven't researched if these are readily available and cheap
Is there a way to schedule a soft reboot of my router using Windows system tools? I'd schedule it to reboot every night.

I currently have a issue with my TP-link WR941N.When I first connected the router I had a good internet speeds of about 70 mbps. My max provided by the ISP is 120Mbps but 70 was acceptable for me. Recently however the connection is terrible. I regularly have a speeds of 6Mbps via the router, When i directly to the modem via kabel I get a speed of 120Mbps. Therefore I ruled out that the connectivity problem is due to my ISP.

I have a broadband connection through a TV cable connection to a ISP provided modem/wireless box. I have a wireless network set up already from this box. I wanted to extend the wireless network to a hard to reach area so i bought a seperate router (d-Link DIR-615 revE3).
I connected one of the 4 LAN outputs from the modem to the router's "Internet" input. Windows 7 detected the new router's wireless network and guided me through setting up a name and password for it. However there is actualy no internet access on this network even though it's directly connected to the modem.I was thinking that i wanted to just extend the original wireless network but a new network is fine if only it would use the internet from its LAN connection... a desktop computer has connected from the same LAN output of the modem without any security and been able to access the internet from it.

Even after a factory restore it still doesn't work with those websites and after talking to my friend it turns out he too has a tp-link router but a different model.
