Cisco AAA/Identity/Nac :: 5508 / ISE / BYOD / Windows Clients Reject ISE Local-certificate
Mar 26, 2013
We are deploying BYOD with Cisco ISE 1.1.2 and WLC (5508) using 802.1x authentication.Windows clients cannot connect to 802.1x SSID with the following error on ISE:Authentication failed : 12321 PEAP failed SSL/TLS handshake because the client rejected the ISE local-certificate
The client doesn't have preconfigured wifi profile or root certificate installed. The concept of BYOD suppose that you can connect your device without any installed certificates and preconfigured wifi-profiles.
The problem is that Windows 7 supplicant does not send TLS alert in pop up window, when connecting to 802.1x SSID.If this alert is seen, than you can accept it and proceed the connection. After that you will be asked to install ROOT-cert, get your own cert and etc.So, the question is: how to make the windows supplicant to show the pop-up window with TLS alert?
p.s. the attached file shows the example of pop up TLS-alert window

I have a problem where wireless clients at a remote site cannot successfully authenticate through their WLC to my ACS 5.2 (Linux on VM). I have three sites where this authentication is functioning properly; at my fourth site the wireless clients fail with a PEAP error: "12321 PEAP failed SSL/TLS handshake because the client rejected the ACS local-certificate". My wireless clients are Win7 using WPA2-Enterprise security type with AES encryption. The authentication method is set to Microsoft PEAP (EAP-MSCHAP v2) and the 'Validate server certificate' is not checked. My wireless access rules on ACS 5.2 are working well at three sites. My ACS 5.2 has a self-signed certificate that doesn't expire until August 2012. A laptop that can successfully authenticate at other sites cannot authenticate at the fourth site.
Phase one of the PEAP process is where the client authenticates the server certificate and the TLS tunnel is created so that in phase two user authentication credentials are sent through the TLS tunnel using EAP. My clients do not seem to be able to create the TLS tunnel because they reject the ACS local certificate; thus, user credentials are never passed and authentication fails. I have renewed the ACS local certificate and rebooted the ACS server but the problem persists. My WLAN on the WLC has its security policy set to [WPA + WPA2][Auth(802.1X)]. WPA uses TKIP and WPA2 uses AES; Auth Key Mgmt is set to 802.1X. The remote site where authentication fails is a different domain; the other three sites are the same domain.
I can see the failed authentication attempts in my ACS "Monitoring and Reports | Reports | Catalog | AAA Protocol | RADIUS Authentication" report. They all fail with the same PEAP error: 12321 PEAP failed SSL/TLS handshake because the client rejected the ACS local-certificate. The ACS local certificate works fine at three sites--just not at the fourth. Is my problem the certificate or is it an 802.1X client problem?

Been tinkering around in our ACS 5.2 appliances today to setup PEAP. I generated a self signed certificate under local certificates which I want to remove now. But when I try to delete it I get the following message:
This System Failure occurred: Certificate is associated with a protocol. Hence it cannot be deleted.. Your changes have not been save. Click OK to return to the list page.
I assume this is because it is associated with the EAP protocol, but I cannot uncheck the box when I edit the local certificate. How can I get rid of this test certificate?

We have the following BYOD environment:
WLC 5508 (7.4.100.0)Cisco Identity Services EngineVersion : 1.1.2.145 Patch Version : 3
During BOYD implementation we faced some problems with Android devices:
1) The Netwrok Setup Assistant (NSA) download process corrupts during the self-provisioning process (captured on 4.1.1 and 4.2.2 version)
2) If NSA is already installed, the network setup process (downloading profile, certificate) stops at last step: connecting to network, meanwhile the connection itself successfully establishes. This bug is captured on 4.2.2 version, 4.1.1 is ok.
Google ACL is configured according to TrustSec docs and permits all traffic to google networks 173.194.0.0/16 and 74.125.0.0/16.

I need this SSL certficate installation on my acs appliance 1120 for PEAP clients.I have exported SSL server certficate from my old acs 3.3 server which is under acscertstore folder issued by CA vendor . I need to reuse this same SSL certificate on my acs appliance .ACS appliance certficate setup requires following two certificate to be installed for PEAP clients authentication
1) Server Certificate
2) CA certificate
Server Certificate : For server certifcate , I have my old certificate which is exported from my old acs 3.3 server , when i tried to download my server certficate via ftp server on my acs appliance , its looking for private key & private key file .Private key & file is generated intially on CSR request when this server certificate is requested to CA vendor for my old acs 3.3 . I dont know the private key password . If i need private key & file , then i need to generate new CSR from my acs appliance and i need to submit this CSR output to my CA vendor to generate new SSL server certificate .which is something like new server certificate request .CA certficate : For CA certficate , when i open my existing SSL certificate under detials tab in CRL distribution point , i could see below URL . whn i open this URL it giving certificate revocation list . [1]CRL Distribution Point.

We use a combination of Cisco ACS and Cisco catalyst 3560 switches for network authentication and authorization. Clients (Windows XP) have a certificate installed which will grand access to the network and put them in the correct VLAN. So far, so good. Some users are testing with Windows 7 in the same set-up as above and run into strange behaviour. The problem is that after a random timer the machine gets de-authenticated and nothing besides a reboot works to get the computer authenticated again (from a Windows point of view). It looks like this only happens to users who are using a certificate to authenticate, Windows 7 MAC bypass users have no such problems. If it occurs, the following logging appears in ACS: [code] We are using ACS 4.2(0) Build 124 and 3560-48PS switches with IOS 12.2(55).

There is ASA with remote access VPN and users are authenticated using third party signed certificates (CA is not local in ASA).When user certificate expires i can see it in syslog messages. For example:
%ASA-3-717009: Certificate validation failed. Certificate date is out-of-range, serial number: (...)
I would like to know if there is an opportunity to view user's certificate expiry date beforehand, say, 3 days before?

I have installed a new SSL certificate on our ASA 5500. I removed the old one, installed the new one. And associated the trust points with the interface we use for Web Connect and Any Connect connections.
They are still seeing the old expired certificates. Users can still log in and authenticate but I would rather them see the correct certificate.

ASA 5510 configuration for Csco anyconnect vpn client. Currently ASA is configured for self-signed certificate acces thru anyconnect ssl vpn. So the cert is being generated with every connection (of my understanding, I haven't found any identity certificate on the current configuration, at least on ASDM). Now I need to use a certificate from our local windows CA that we have at the office. I.e. self-signed certs should be changed with another one issued by our local office authority.
1. Generated new rsa key pair on the ASA
2. Generated CSR from identity certificates
3. Applied CSR to the windows CA and generated the certificate
Now I need to understand what is going to happen after I install this certificate on the ASA's identity certificates and apply it to outside interface. Is there anything to be done on the users side to use new certificate? Do they need to download and install the root certificate from the same CA? Do i need to have the root certificate installed on the ASA or identity is enough?

We are moving forward with a mobility project which requires our network to authenticate/authorize based on certificates.
WLAN_1 has 802.1x enabled passing the cert through to the MS CA which authorizes the cred, which in turn passes the AD creds of the user to the MS RADIUS server for authenticate/authorization.
Hardware: WLC 5508 running 7.2.110.0 3600 APs ACS 5.2 not used for AAA
1. As we turn up additional SSIDs, we need Mobile SSID to accept ONLY the Mobile Cert, our Internet SSID to only accept the Internal Cert and our GUEST SSID to deny ANY Cert issued by our CA.I know ISE makes this much easier, but I dont have it and need this to work as best we can until next fiscal cycle..

I bought a new WRVS400n recently because it had Gigabit speed, wireless n and a built in VPN server. The device works perfect except for the Quick VPN client. I'm a system engineer so I thought I could set it up quite easy just like any other device I configured in the past. Painfull but it isn't like this.
I set up the VPN on the WRVS4400n and generated a certificate. I saved both the client and admin certificate to my pc, I gave them a name to easily make up the difference between both of them. When placing the certificate in the installed QuickVPN folder, it doesn't seem to get recognised by the QuickVPN software. When I try to connect, it says 'Server's certificate doens't exist on your local computer'. I guess the naming convention must meet some kind of format, is that correct? If so, this should have been described in the documentation.
Besides that I checked if the required ports used by the VPN server are open on the public port of the device, that is the case. So It seems I'm quite close to get it working.
The version of QuickVPN I used is 1.4.2.1. The WRVS4400n has the latest firmware loaded.

i have a Setup as Follows
- 5508/1142
- heterogenous Client with WZC, XP, SP3, SSO
- ACS 5.2, MS AD
Target is Songle Sign On wih Machine Cerificates against AD. For testing purpose we tested with EAP-PEAP/MS Chapv2 and Machine Auth, works fine. Now we installed a Machine cert in the Machine cert Store (no User Cert) and reconfigured the WZC for using certs and Machin Auth. What we see is an Error Message in the System Tray that there is no certificate available. We checked it again, the MMC shows us a Machine cert in the Store.

We have setup laptops that are part of domain to use internal CA for authentication to WLAN. Ipads are not part of domain so we are not able to use the same model, or can we use the same model for authentication? How to setup WLC to authenticate ipad users via certificate instead of PSK while connecting to the WLAN?

I am using webauth and need to install a SSL cert to prevent the "There is a problem with this website's security certificate" message. I have a Wildcard cert that was issued by Network Solutions that I use on a couple web servers I run, and want to know if I can use that for the WLC? It's a pks cert and I think the WLC needs to use a pem cert, so I converted the wildcard to pem. Or do I need to purchase a cert that is not a wildcard and is in pem format?

I have two Cisco WLC 5508 controllers that I'm trying to set-up for our new corporate WLAN. I've gone through most of the configuration fine but have ran into an issue uploading a signed certificate to one of my controllers. I should point out that I have managed to upload the certificate successfully to one of the controllers, I just can't seem to upload it to the second. The issue is as follows:
- I've logged into the controller, gone to Security -> Web Auth -> Certificate -> Download Certificate
- I've specified my tftp server details and selected apply
- the process begins and I can see through my tftp client that the controller is attempting to copy and install the certificate
- The controller tries to install the certificate but fails, reporting the same

I am planning to migrate from an old 4400 to a new 5508. I am happy with migrating the access points but I need to know if I can migrate the web authentication certificate used for guests. The new WLC will have the same virtual interface and DNS name to match the CN on the current certificate. Will this work or will I need a new certificate?

Currently I'm using a self signed cert issued by ACS. We are having an issue where occasionally we see in our Windows 7 logs that Windows did not like the self signed cert from ACS when doing dot1x authentication for our Windows 7 clients. We are using the built in dot1x client that comes with Windows and have the "Validate Server Certificate" unchecked but still see this error occasionally. I've tried issuing a CSR from the ACS server and going to Thwate and getting a test cert but everytime I paste the CSR into the field at Thwate I get an error about invalid cert type. You have to choose from a list of server types. I've tried several different ones. I've also tried issuing the request from a WIndows server and when I try and import the files I get a invalid key error. How to get certificate working from Thwate or Verisign?
