Cisco Application :: 6509-E SUP720 And SLB Limitations?
Mar 21, 2012
We are looking into replacing our current Windows NLB configuration with a SLB solution as NLB creates some nasty multicast traffic.
We are currently curious about the limitations for running SLB without a dedicated ACE Module, will it handle line-rate speed (1 and 10 gbit) with SLB?
Does VSS introduce any limitations for SLB? Any other pitfalls/limitations we should be aware of?
Hardware info: 2x WS-C6509-E in VSS with VS-S720-10G (VS-F6K-PFC3C) running s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-33.SXI7

I wanted to find out how many times can I apply a healthcheck in a single context. I have 50 farms that are using the same port and instead of creating 50 different healthchecks, I want to just create 1 healthcheck for the 50 farms and apply it to each farm. I also need to know if the same limitations (whatever they may be) is the same for the 4710, ACE20 and ACE30.

Currently we do not have multicat routing enabled on either of our 2x Sup720-10G 6509 Switches. We have no intention of doing so either. I am looking for clarification on how mutlicasting operates within a Vlan.
IOS: s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-33.SXH2a.bin
Our Vlan has IGMP snooping enabled. Here is the output.
6509Switch#sh ip igmp inter vlan 25
Vlan25 is up, line protocol is up
Internet address is 10.1.1.254/24
IGMP is disabled on interface
we do not want to disable IGMP due to this one concern that I can't find documented. If we disable IGMP snooping on the vlan, what happens to multicast packets with a TTL > 1. Do they get flooded to the entire switch and all Vlans? Or does it stay within the Vlan?

I will be installing a secondary SUP720 in a 6509-E and will be upgrading the IOS on the existing SUP which is on 122-18.SXF6. I've read that this release has passed End of Critical Maintenance earlier this you. I thinking of upgrading the IOS to 12.2.33-SXJ1(ED) or 12.2.33-SXI8(ED) (possible more stable), but i'm not sure if i need any step upgrades from the current version. The SUP meets the required hardware specs and I will also be upgrading the ROMMON to 12.2(17r)SX7 first.
I have alot of experience upgrading IOS on routers and switches, but i just need to now if there are any gotchas that i need to know for the upgrade on the SUP.
The other issue is i don't believe the current IOS has been installed, are there any issue running on an IOS not installed. Patching is not available since the system is not running from an installed image. To install please use the "install file" command.

I support an active VSS cluster using 2 x 6509E chassis with single Supervisor 3C modules in each chassis. I want to replace these with Supervisor 2T modules. All my service modules and line cards are supported with the Sup2Ts (I will also be implementing 6908 modules). Is there a document on the Cisco site for this? I haven't found one though I can find plenty that describe how to do a software upgrade.
(Note, I have a 3rd (non VSS) 6509E chassis that is also part of this core network and that will maintain VTP/V LAN's etc).

Last month I was reviewing following Cisco document, in which Cisco mentioned that ""To avoid possible memory fragmentation in the forwarding information base (FIB), Cisco recommends that the switch processor (SP) DRAM to a minimum of 1 GB ""
[URL]
Since this document has been revised in Oct 2011 and, I can't no more find the above memory recommendations.
I want know if any one using WS-SUP720-3B with IOS SXI6 and Cisco ACE30 has gone for upgrading the SP DRAM from 512MB(default) to 1GB ?

We've just invested in a pair of Sup2Ts to upgrade a Sup720 6509 chassis but I'm unsure exactly how the management port(s), aka the Connectivity Management Processor (CMP), should be configured (and patched) in a dual supervisor system? Is each CMP an independent entity or is the management interface configuration (IP address, gateway, etc) replicated between supervisors? If it's the latter then do both management ports need to be physically connected at the same time?

I'm fairly new to networking and need to migrate an old core to a new core. I have a 6509-e Switch that I had an RMA on one of my 720 sup cards. After receiving the sup card I swapped my slave out with the new one, expecting it to boot into ios. It booted into Roman. I tried to boot the image manually and it did the same thing. I also tried to boot from my flash and, again, booted into ROMmon.
Question: If i configure and change the boot to boot from image it tells me i need to reset or power cycle first. Will this reset the entire switch? As this is production I'd rather not.
I am at home now, but I can supply any logs/hardware model/configs tomorrow. I thought I would see if this is an easy fix.

I have a two fiber connection from our Central Office(6513) to Remote office (6509). I have a requirement that on the remote office if one of the fiber goes down, the second fiber should work as a failover. I am planning to use SUP720-3B SFP to connect to the CO.
Can I connet one fiber to Sup720-3b G5/1 & another fiber connection to G5/2? or Can I connet one fiber to Sup720-3b G5/1 & another fiber connection to G6/2? I am running EIGRP between sites. Any sample config.

I have ACE10 Module in my switch core 6509, my context "Proxy" was criated for balance connections to Forefront TMG Servers, this balance needs original client IP Address connections end to end in the solution.
My problem is: The clients are complaining of slowness connection to the internet, i captured the traffic in the ace capture feature and i see some RST packets and severals checksum error packets in pcap file.
The topology is:
Client -> ACE VIP VLAN 81 -> RSERVERS VLAN 80
Vlan 80 is in L2 mode(no interface vlan in the switch core 6509, route occurs through the ace appliance).
The IP address 10.96.200.6 is the gw for rservers.

We had some issue with Datacentre ACE modules. Both primary and DR ACE modules got restarted in 16 hours difference. Unfortunately Syslog was not configured on the ACE and local logging got cleared after restart. The current IOS version is A2(3.2). The modules uptime was around 300 Days. Here is the log from 6509 switch during the restart. [code]

We have a 6509 with an ACE module. For reasons I don't fully understand the ACE is running using a BVI in bridge mode. It has loads of secondary interfaces.
[Code]...
I can ping all of the IPs on the BVI, but only servers in Subnet 10.7.42/42 can ping out of the the layer 3 on the 6509. I have all the routes configured properly on the 6509 pointing to the ACE for these subnets. The question is though the config has been excepted, is there a limit to the number of secondary on a BVI.

I have a ace board(Acsm) in my switch 6509.I need provide access for clients over https, my scenario looks like this post [URL] .But, i have only one interface, and need to configure nat for inbound clients, to access the server with ip address of the interface vlan of my ace(if i set ace gateway in a rserver, the ssl termination works). The Topology is: Client(https) -> Ace(Https) -> Ace(http) -> rserver (http). Need to configuring this nat? I need that external clients arrive at the server with the ip of the same network as him, he did not right back the packet to the default gateway, but the origin of the same network as him, so that the communication function successfully, end order.

Current topology in network is such: web servers with content needing to be load balanced are in vlan 35 and these servers are directly connected to Core switch (two 6509 VSS) via 20 Gb EtherChannel. Vlan 35 also spans some other switches with other servers residing in this vlan. Additionally, there are dozens of another vlans (including external users) that need to communicate with web servers. IP addresses of these two web servers are: 192.168.35.1/24 and 192.168.35.2/24 accordingly with default gateway 192.168.35.254/24 (SVI on Core switch). Currently these ip addresses are used by management and other purposes and need to be reachable for same purposes after configuring load balancing with ACEs - it is needed to have direct access to servers behind ACE. How I can do that using ACE in routed mode?

I trying configure ASN traffic load balance, but doesn't works.I have one Cisco Catalyst 6509 and onde Cisco Ace10 module, in my context "PanWEB" i have the interfaces above: [code] If i try to establish a telnet session(telnet 10.96.202.10 80) i see the SYN packet passing through the ACE and going to the real server, but, the server do not response the SYN packet. I done a capture in the server using wireshark and could see that the IP address of the destination is the VIP and not the rserver ip address , this is a problem? Why can not I have the SYN + ACK from the server?

We have the following architecture for Internet access:
LAN ---- CISCO-CHASSIS----FIREWALL-----INTERNET
My concern is about PAT, for LAN users Internet access: I would like that PAT is performed by Cisco chassis(in my case, a C4500), not by firewall (which means: local IP addresses for flows from LAN to Internet are all natted with the same public IP address). Are there some drawbacks to this design? I guess there is no problem for classical flows, but what about flows with specific comportment (such as FTP) on Cisco routers?

I'm currently running 8.3(2) on my 5520s in an active/standby config. The 5520s have the 2GB RAM upgrade and 256MB flash card. Are there any CPU limitations in going to 8.4? I read the release notes but didn't seen anything about CPU. I heard through the grapevine that a 64-bit processor may be needed. We currently have the Pentium 4 Celeron 2000 MHz CPU.

I've setup a Cisco Secure ACS server 5.1 in VMware ESXi everything seems to be working fine, however under the options for Policy Elements > Authorization and Permissions > Device Administration > Command Sets there is a command called "DenyAllCommands" that was there when i first installed the ACS. Is there any way to remove this? When I try to remove it i get an error that thats it can't be removed or modified. I'm writing a report on the Cisco ACS for university, if this is a limitation of the evaluation licence I will need to reference it. If this is a limitation and provide a link to a cisco page that confirms this.

we have a RV082 and have the DMZ option enable for a range of IPs within the same subnet of WAN IP and this works great. I have another range of Public IPs from our ISP that is not in the same subnet of the WAN IP and do not see a way on the RV082 to include this 2nd bank of Public IPs in the DMZ. Our ISP internet feed plugs into the RV082 WAN port and we have a switch pulgged into the DMZ port of the RV082 that is used to connect the public devices in the current DMZ. Both banks of Public IPs from our ISP come over via the ISP internet feed plugged into the WAN Port. My question is, if I cannot configure a DMZ rule to allow this 2nd range of Public IPs to "travel" to the RV082 DMZ port.

A need for a Wireless LAN Controller to perform advance settings.

What are the limitations of Net flow v9 support on the 7600 platform for the SR code releases?
I know that Flexible Net flow is only available on newer releases with some newer hardware. Flexible Net flow gives you the ability to provide full support for Netflow v9 as well as IPFIX.
However, the documentation indicates that Net flow v9 is still supported in the SR code. So I am just trying to find out what are the limitations in how Net flow v9 is implemented without "Flexible Net flow". The Cisco TAC was unable to provide me any documentation about this.
