View 4 RepliesJust a few questions. We are looking to deploying Cisco ASA 5545 into a network. I have a couple of issues with designing the network correctly.
We need to be able to scale out to more hosts than a single VLAN, we would also be considering adding 4948E switch behind the ASA and potentially a stack in front.
The problems are:
1) If we have an outside stack of public 4948E (so we can connect some hosts outside the firewall, such as additional ASA's running in NAT mode) for VPN. Is this a reliable, recommended configuration? The reason being we need to have the ability to add other seperate ASA protected networks that we don't want going through the 5545 as it's going to quickly run it out of capacity. If I have the L3 switch stack in front I'm guessing we would have a small subnet to link upstream and then sub-subnetwork into two blocks, one on the inside interface and one on the L3 switch for the other hosts? Or would it be better to let the upstream provider do this, and then just get them to provide us with two smaller subnets rather than one big one? As below if we do L3 stack ourselves we would need to small subnets, one to communicate with upstream and one to link ASA subnets. This seems like a waste of IP's. I was wondering if I could use Internal IP space on the L3 > ASA link, but I thought that could be an issue for BOGONS list.
2) If I want to extend the inside network (Cisco ASA would not run NAT, just public IP's on the inside, routed to the outside interface of the ASA) there are two ways. Use the ASA to create subinterfaces/VLANs (but that would be routed via the ASA - may be a performance hit?) or use a L3 switch behind the ASA. How does one accomplish running L3 switch behind ASA properly?
Currently have an ASA 5545. What I want to do is allow our support team to perform ALL show commands (up to and including show run) but not enable them to perform ANY configuration changes on the devices (not get into config t). This is to allow them to check ARP tables, routing protocol status, etc
i don't have access to the ASA at the moment and haven't been able to figure it out in IOS, i'm assuming its not too hard.
I have 2 ASBR routers, AGFR01RTR03 and AGFR02RTR03, performing OSPF to OSPF redistribution in both ways for the same ***. They also do summarization for our private addressing scheme. It is all working just fine for that part (neighbors, summarization, redistribution).

Currently the OSPF network consist of 2 segment route via static route.One is AREA 0 and another AREA 10.Both network are seperate entity, only static route to route between 2 networks.But the static route do not provide the dynamically and flexibility, I plan to run routing between 2 networks via VLAN160 and VLAN162.
I still want to manitnace it was 2 different OSPFrouting domain.Can I run OSPF with differrent OSPF porcess ID?
I've just got my hands on a Cisco PIX 515. I mainly brought it too learn and play with, i done some Cisco stuff in the past but not much.
I just need too get this up and running with a IP Address on ethernet1 (192.168.1.254) but when I run the command "name if ethernet1 inside security100" in enable mode all I keep getting is ERROR % Invalid input detected at '' maker
Whenever I use the following command I get an invalid input error

I have reset the firewall (cisco 5505) to factory default. The marker ^ is under the subnet
I am trying to connect to a PIX 501 firewall via serial connection. My problem is that I cannot issue commands to the firewall. Whenever I try to type something into the terminal, nothing happens. I have the connection settings configured properly (9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, no flow control) and have tried PuTTY and HyperTerminal and have the same results. I get output from the firewall, but my keystrokes do not seem to be going to it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a need to utilize two factor authentication using a machine certificate and users AD crednetials. What we would like to do is to have the ASA and AnyConnect verify the certificate exists, check against our in house CA for validity, if valid pass the user credentials to the AD servers and establish the tunnel. If not valid quarantine the session and pop a message to the user to contact the help desk ASAP. My guess is the following (using ASDM 6.6, ASA 8.6.1, ASA 5545-X):
1. under the connection profile I have select BOTH for authentication and added a AAA server group.
2. under Cert Management I have added the 3 certs that are present on all company mobile assets
- Cert America
- Cert Europe
- Cert Root
3. I have an identity cert installed from the company CA and it is selected as the device cert under connection profiles
4.Local Cert Authority is Disabled
5.Under Remote Access>Advanced>Certs for AnyConnect>
- I have mapped DefaultCertifiateMap pri 10 to Company_Cert connection profile
- The mapping is looking for Subject: CN: <Contains> (string) ----where string is a common component of each Cert listed in #2.
Question #1 - Is this correct for utilizing certs and AD auth or have a missed any steps?
Users are directed to a an initial installation URL - where the AnyConnect client performs the installation and passes down the intial AC profile which auths using only AD creds. On subsequent connections users who pass the certificate mapping check are migrated to the connection profile which uses the dual authentication method.
Question #2 - When I attempt a new installation of AnyConnect using the two factor URL . I receive an error "certificate validation error" and the installation fails - for the life of me I can not figure out why???? The machine has all three certs, using IE9 as the browser.
I have two switches and two ASA in active/standby as connected below. These devices are running OSPF 128 in one area (Area 0).I'm pinging from both laptops to each other both ways. The ASA has the latest "8.6.1-5" image. I've configured the firewall failover polltime to 1s with holdtime of 4s. Pings both ways OK.

I fail the primary firewall (ASA-ACTIVE). I get a 4 seconds ping loss which is expected (holdtime) however after 10 seconds of pings I get another outage which last anywhere between 5 and 15 seconds. I've done a fair amount of debugging and I did notice that the second outage occurs with the OSPF neighbor goes from "loading" to "full". This doesn't make any sense because the routing table is fully populated when going to “full”.
When perfoming a manual fail back (type failover active on ASA-ACTIVE), pings goes on for approximately 10seconds and then an outage between 5 to 15 seconds. Agsin this outage occurs when OSPF neighbor goes from "loading" to "full".I've tried debugging on the switches and found nothing.
I have an issue with input errors, overruns, and input reset drops on the inside interface of an 5580-40 (v8.2.5: Transparent mode) The box is not stressed at all according to the 'show' commands in the Cisco troubleshooting performance document for PIX/ASA v8.2.5. Nothing stands out because is pretty much normal, nothing (processes, RAM, blocks, IO...) really being highly utilized. I have replaced the 10Gig card and that seemed to work because the rate of errors has gone down tremedously. The next step is to RMA the whole box.My question is what would be the cause of the inside interface to stop processing traffic (I say that because the syslog server stops receiving messages) for some periods of 30 seconds periodically throughout the day and clients lose their connections (ie Outlook, IBM Sametime, Oracle, MSSQL..etc). Can the issue be somewhere related to the overruns and input errors?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWe are planning to upgrade the ASA license in an A/S pair by adding the ASA5500-SC-20= license. The ASA is 5545 and runs 8.6. According to documentation, after 8.3 version, the ASAs can share a license features and do not require the same license on both boxes. I run a test in GNS3 with 8.4(2) images and I saw that by adding the 'activation-key' command only on the primary unit did the job as the 'show activation-key' output shows. In order to be 100% sure would like to verify the following:
Putting the activation-key only on the primary unit is enough and there is no need to do anything elseIn case the primary unit is standby, again we have to put the actication-key command on the primary unit (I am asking this because the 'activation-key' command is not listed under the commands that are not replicated to the other unitk, but doesn't make sense to be replicated since the activation-key is 'tied' with the S/N of the device).
I've configure Ldap authentication on ASA 5545 to allow only a certain user group. I mapped the the memberOf group but this seems not to be working as it allows all AD users. [code]

ASA 5585-x10, ver 9.1. I have about 10 public sub nets that will be used for NAT translation on the outside interface. These sub nets are different from the sub net the outside interface. Is there a way to advertise these routes using OSPF from the ASA?
I tried to redistribute a static route, but can't make the destination router an interface that is on the ASA. I don't own or control the upstream router.
I am getting this error on my PIX 535 with 8.0.4 code. The error is Error : OSPF/RIP cannot be enabled on failover interface, I am getting this error while trying to enable RIP on the firewall. The context is single mode and failover is enabled. When I am disabling the failover the Firewall is accepting the RIP configurations.

Vlan1 is the internal networkVlan2 is the network to cable modem
Eth 0/1 is connected to a 2960G switch with hard coded 100mb Full Duplex at each end, this is the inside interface. Eth 0/0 is the connection to the cable modem, this is the outside interface, set at auto at both ends.
Im getting on the vlans eg. 51253 packets dropped however network traffic isnt impacted and everything runs fine, as well as 46532 switch ingress policy drops.

We have a setup with a MS-TMG - ASA (8.2.4(4) in routing mode) - (internal) Router - FWSM - Router - Exchange with NLB. We have now the problem that IMAPS is not really working through this setup. It works from internal (without ASA and TMG inbetween), but not reliably through the internet. There is a rule on the ASA which permits the ports from the TMG to the Exchange NLB address.We opened a case with Microsoft and they told us that not all tcp-syn packets are received by the Exchange server which were sent by the TMG.Thus I sniffed on the ASA with a packet capture and indeed, a lot of syn packets were on the interface to the TMG, but not anymore on the interface to the internal router.This ASA also filters all other internet<->company traffic, so there's a lot of stuff running.
Maybe it's dropped in the ASP, or is the capture maybe not valid?Here the show asp drop:

I have a Cisco 871 router that used to have Access list based security. now I am trying the ZBFW for the first time. I thought I had a pretty good program until I found all my traffic was getting dropped. This is my first stab at ZBFWs and I am a bit confused esp with the default class part.
The router is for my house and thus also has to have priority for gaming. I will add the gaming and voice QOS once I get it working,

I happen to noticed the FWSM was dropping packets at about 387 packets every 5 minutes. My outside FWSM is WAN facing and has a 1gig link (35% utilized) my inside facing has about 100 downstream switches to the closets. I do not see my 6509's back plane is being over utilized and my understanding of the FWSM show be go for 5 gig so it isn't oversubscribe. Why i am seeing packets dropped?

All are working like a charm, from my virtual XP machine I can ping every site, e.g. www.google.com which replies nice with it's ip-address.
However, I cannot reach ANY website
When I connect through a Cisco 3700 router the webbrowser works perfect, so it must be something in the ASA configuration (I presume )
I've tried about all possible Access Rules, but still nothing.
Today I've received reports of slow internet access/activity and have noticed myself that it seems a bit slow today. On the dashboard of our asa 5510 the "outside interface" traffic usage is running constantly high. It's at the top of the graph. How can I tell what is causing the spike in utilization. It usually runs at about 1500-2000 Kbps, and now it's up over 10,000.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWe've had this firewall in place for years, and there haven't been changes to it in the past few months. Last week, however, we started having problems accessing one of our networks through the PIX, and after working with Microsoft, we determined it was an MTU issue. The maximum sized packet to the PIX and through the PIX is 1020 bytes, and it doesn't matter if the packets are sourced from a server or the PIX itself. From the server, we can ping 1500 byte packets to the core switch with no issues. All interfaces are set for 1500 byte.

I have done a "sho vpn-sessiondb detail svc" and I can see the dropped packets of the individual users, but cannot see why the packets are still dropping.how I can correct this and restore speeds?
I am attempting to FTP to a remote site through a IPSEC tunnel.When I am transfering large files the ASA5540 is showing syslog errors stating "connection timeout". What I think is happening is after about 1 hour the firewall is closing the connection control port for the FTP session and neither end is notified so eventually the transfer is stopped.What do I need to modify in the FW to accommodate these larger files?

View 6 Replies View RelatedWe have an ASA5520 running ver 7.0(8), nat-control is disabled. On the "outside" interface we have a closed network which is publicly addressed i.e. no access to Internet. We also have two Vlan interfaces on a trunk connection i.e. "inside" interface (Vlan7) and "dmz" interface (Vlan802). Traffic from the "outside" to "inside" is statically NAT'd such that the public IP is translated to a private IP when accessing the "inside" interface. However, our OSS servers on the "dmz" interface need to be able to receive packets from the public IP addresses on the "outside" . All is okay with the outside to inside traffic and traffic initiated from the OSS servers on the "dmz" to the outside works okay (snmp gets etc) i.e. the servers receive reply packets from the public addresses of the outside devices.
However, traffic that originates on the "outside" interface (snmp traps etc) which is destined for the "dmz" is actually being routed to the "inside" interface and therefore the public source address is being NAT'd by the static NAT command. The access-list "in_on_outside" has relevant entries to allow connectivity from outside to dmz, we have tried a static nat command (outside, dmz) to maintain the public addressing but this made no difference and also a nat exempt. With ########nat-control disabled - do I still need a translation or NAT exempt for the "outside" <> "dmz" traffic flow, if so how should this look ?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have 2 ASA 5510 firewalls at 2 different sites. Both running on version 8.0.4. Users are using an Instant Messaging type of application provided by a local telco here which is able to send and receive SMS using SIP (from the packet capture that I've done).
When users use the IM in site A, they are able to send and receive text messages via the IM from behind the firewall. However, when the users are in site B, users are able to send out text messages but not able to receive them.
I noticed that when I remove "inspect sip" from site-B's global policy map, users from site-B can successfully receive text messages. I have confirmed that it is the firewall that drops the packets as I have captured the inside and outside interfaces of site-B's ASA and I can see the incoming sip "request: MESSAGE" packet on the outside interface but I do not see the packet exiting the inside interface.
I have cross check both firewall configurations, and I do not see anything suspicious commands relating to sip that might cause this issue. Is there any command to troubleshoot why the sip inspection is dropping the sip packets on site-B?
