Cisco Firewall :: How To Log Incoming Traffic (SMTP) On PIX 515E
Mar 6, 2013
I'm new to ASA's and PIX units. I've setup a few VPN's now but know next to nothing about logging on these units. I read the config guide for the PIX, but cannot figure out how to get a log of incoming SMTP traffic going on the console.Do I need to use a SYSLOG server? I can probably set one up on my laptop.

Most examples of NAT translation using an ASA 8.4 are based on servers within a DMZ. In my case it's not because the mailserver also functions as an data and Active Directory server for my local domain. If tried to config the ASA for a while now and throw it in the corner for a couple of months out of frustration. Now I got some time left during christmas break I decided to start again. My purpose is to NAT SMTP / POP traffic from the internet, trough the ASA to my (inside) server. This is what I got so far. With this config I'm unable to telnet the inside server (192.168.1.10) from a remote location.
ASA Version 8.4(3)!hostname ciscoasaenable password cE8UUNd encryptedpasswd 2KFQ.2KYOU encryptednames!interface Ethernet0/0switchport access vlan 2!interface Ethernet0/1!interface Ethernet0/2!interface Ethernet0/3!interface Ethernet0/4!interface Ethernet0/5!interface Ethernet0/6!interface Ethernet0/7!interface Vlan1nameif insidesecurity-level 100ip address 192.168.1.253 255.255.255.0!interface Vlan2nameif outsidesecurity-level 0ip address 95.*.*.218 255.255.255.248!ftp mode passiveobject network obj_anysubnet 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0object network server1_smtphost 192.168.1.10object network server1_pop3host 192.168.1.10access-list outside_access_in extended
[code]....
I can ping 192.168.1.10 from the ASA CLI. I can Ping DNS 4.2.2.2 from the CLI (internet access). I can Telnet the server from the inside LAN, using: telnet 192.168.1.10 25.But I can't Telnet from an outside location using: Telnet 95.*.*.218 25 Because my server is on the Inside interface (diffenrent subnet) do I need an additional route?

A recently added outbound rule has left my SMTP communications broken. I have since removed the rule, and had Cisco do some damage control, but it's still dropping some of the SMTP traffic. I get a number of NDR messages each day like the one below:Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. Subject: RE: Christopher, Curt Sent: 8/19/2011 9:38 AM The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

I've attached an image of my configuration (ASDM GUI). The part of the image highlighted in green are the SMTP rules. The part highlighted in yellow is another rule that I added about a month ago to block a SYN attack. This rule may be part of the problem because of the order it is in the list. Not sure, though.
I have had two Cisco techs Putty into my ASA to check things out. I think they've done all they can. I wonder at this point if it be wise to just reload the last good running-config I have prior to the Outbound rule being added.

Up until recently one of my sites was able to get to a postilion subnet. Then we started receiving "host unreachable" e-mails. Posting told us SMTP traffic was not getting let in. I've compared the current config to a config that was saved before the issue popped up and found really no noticeable difference.
I tried a packet tracer trace with no luck: SiteB- Firewall# packet-tracer input outside tcp 11.2.2.36 12345 65.19.0.0 25.
Phase: 1
Type: FLOW-LOOKUP

Result: ALLOW

input-status: up
input-line-status: up
output-interface: outside
output-status: up
output-line-status: up

Drop-reason: (acl-drop) Flow is denied by configured rule
Attached is a sanitized config. I'm not entirely convinced it's a firewall issue, but I need to some successful testing to prove otherwise.

I am trying to switch out a cisco pix 501 firewall with a cisco ASA 5505 firewall. I am not very familiar with all of the commands for the firewalls and have always relied on a standard command line script that I use when building a new one. Unfortunately, my script is not working with the 5505. What I am doing wrong with the following script? I've masked public IP info with xxx.xxx.xxx and I run it right after restoring the firewall to the factory defaults. I am able to get out to the internet if I browse directly from one of the servers, but cannot access a web page when trying to browse to it from an outside network. [code]

It is also possible to accass services on VLAN 10 (DMZ) from outside. The only thing I see in syslog is "Built Outbound" and "Teardown".

We are using several Cisco ASA 5505 with the 8.05 OS on it. The problem is that the SMTP traffic of my ISP(Telenet) isn't passtrough the ASA, I'm using outlook 2010. Before there was also a problem with our local exchange server but I solved this by disabling ESMTP checking in the policies, but it didn't worked for my local ISP.

I am new to the ASA series and I am at a complete loss as to why I cannot configure this router to forward SMTP and RDP traffic to an internal host.
The packet trace tool in ASDM shows complete end-to-end connectivity for RDP but it still fails to connect from outside. This is my config file, what I need to change in order to make it work?

Ive got a problem with passing traffic through a Cisco 515e firewall.im trying to telnet to devices on the inside net, 172.16.x.x fom an outside net 10.x.x.x? ive configured a group called infrastructure and added the 10.x.x.x addresses.ive configured acl 101 inbound on the outside interface:
access-list 101 permit tcp object-group INFRASTRUCTURE any eq telnet
theres a route to the inside net:
inside 172.16.0.0 255.255.0.0 172.16.163.1
and theres a translation:
static (inside,outside) 10.4.4.34 10.4.4.34 netmask 255.255.255.255
when i try and connect, using a packet capture I can see traffic from 10.4.4.34 to the inside device 172.x.x.x on the inside interface but i cant see the traffic leave the outside interface ive used the same group infrastructure group before to connect to VM machines on the 172.x.x.x net on RDP and this wrks ok. access-list 101 permit tcp object-group INFRASTRUCTURE object-group VMs eq 3389

We have configured ASA 5510. We have configure Ethernet 0/0 ( Outside ) connected with ADSL line and Ethernet 0/1 ( Inside ) Local LAN. we have configured NAT and all the traffic is passing through outside interface. Now we have connected ethernet 0/3 ( leasedline ) interface with static public IP. Now we want to allow SMTP traffic to pass through from this interface.
How to configure it if we want our local lan SMTP traffic sending through new leased line ( Static Public IP ).

Since the power failure two days ago, my -ASA stops forwarding traffic to internal servers, for no apparent reason. Packet trace shows all OK, packet capture buffer stays empty when I try to http into the mail server. The only way to get it working is to change the Outside Ip to the one used for mail, then to change it back. It will work OK for a few hours, then stop, with nothing obvious in the logs.

I use a mail filtering service that delivers mail to me via SMTP on standard port 25 on one of my 5 static external IP's. I wish to restrict this to their IP's only (they have two) and I am unsure on how to do so? As it stands now, anything on the net can talk to my mailserver and my logs are filling quickly with failed attempts as a result. Here's my setup and what I am trying to accomplish:
mail filtering service -> my public ip:25 -> internal mailserver at 10.0.10.2:25, deny everything inbound except traffic from the mail filtering service, I am thinking an ACL would fit the bill here, but unsure of how to implement. Router is an 1811 with version 15.1(4)M3 IOS. WAN is on fa0, lan is on fa1.

I click save and get this pop-up: Incorrect source ip address. Invalid format of the start IP address. Current Firmware Version : 2.11 The ip is obviously valid, what should I do?

We have a customer using a 2911 router with 3 x DSL WAN links.
The customer runs a building with shared office space which people rent.
Customers in the building are experiencing a problem where they cant email other tenants i.e...
One tenants exchange server tries to make a connection to another tenants server by going out to the internet and back in via the same interface.I believe this might be called "Hair Pinning"

We have the next Settings in our SW. We crate an ACL and aplied to a SVI for Incomming Traffic, I understand that is not necesasry to allow the returning traffic in ACL, but we can't access to rdp for example when we add the ACL, if we remove it, the acces is ok, buet when we add again the access is deny, even we have a log entry, and the ACL i just for Incomming traffic. There is no another ACL.

I have a licensing server. Other computers need to turn on a program, they send a message to the licensing server, and it responds that they have permission to run.Until today the licensing server was plugged into its own ethernet wall socket and configured with a static IP address. Today I put a router into that wall socket and now the server's plugged into the router. The router (WRT-54G) was set to the static IP - and now the internet on its network works. I set all ports to be forwarded to the server's internal IP address - and now my programs can detect and ping it. But now the server won't send back permissions to use licensed software, or even reply with a list of the software which it can license.

We have a switch gc2960. It has ports configured on vlan 27 and vlan 29.It is connected to switch ch3550. It has presence of vlan 27 vlan 29 and also vlan 18 and several other vlans. Our internet firewall is connected to ch3550. It is a fortinet product, so this is not indicated on the diagram.
When the two switches were connected on vlan 29 access ports, pc's on vlan 29 on gc2960 worked as expected. vlan 27 clients of course did not work. When we switched the connecting ports to trunk ports, some weird stuff happened. Clients on gc2960 on vlan 29 could ping and resolve dns, but not browse the intenet. The same was true for clients on gc2960 vlan 27. We verified that packets from the web were coming in through the firewall. What we were thinking, is that they somehow were not being tagged to vlan 29 even though we were trunking.
When we set native vlan 29 on the trunk, then clients on gc2960 vlan 29 operated as expected. However, clients on gc2960 vlan 27 are still having this problem, we can ping and resolve dns but not browse.Consider the other switch ch2960-jstreet which has presence of vlan 18 and vlan 27. It is also connected on trunk to ch3550. We are not using native vlan on this trunk, and traffic works as expected. Is the lack of presence of vlan 18 a factor as to why gc2960 is not receiving the tagged packets correctly? Should the interface vlan18 on gc2960 have an ip address on the vlan 18 network?

We have Cisco ASA 5505, 90.x.y.2/29 IP is assigned to outside interface. We have one internal HTTP server so that I use static (inside, outside) tcp interface [URL] to forward all incoming HTTP traffic to internal HTTP server 1. Now we need to add new physical HTTP server 2 so that I would like to forward
HTTP traffic to e.g. 90.x.y.3/29 to 172.16.0.11.
How can I do that? See scenario image (scenario.png) if needed.

I need to block incoming traffic with Dlink DIR 600. I know how to create the rule source (WAN) to destination (LAN) to deny all protocols. But what IP will I put in WAN? IP address of my Internet? Or how can I enter the ALL IP range in source...format for the IP (it's not 0.0.0.0).
I want to do this because in the DIR log section I'm being PING Flooded. I already un-check "Enable WAN Ping Response" but still receiving the message.

IOS Firewall (ZBF) Limit SMTP connections from same IP
we are running a Postfix MTA behind a IOS Firewall (ZBF) on a CISCO1921. Sometimes we get more than 2000 smtp login attemps like
postfix/smtpd[123456]: connect from (...) (...) postfix/smtpd[123456]: lost connection after AUTH from (...)
in one second. May be bruteforce or DoS ... nevertheless - we like to protect the Postfix MTA from this stuff.
Can we inspect the smtp and limit connections in a time period from the the same IP? Something like "not more than 10 smtp connections during 60 seconds from the same ip" .

Here it is:
