Cisco Switches :: Nexus 5K Multicasting
Mar 24, 2013
We have configured multicasting for our Nexus 5K switches. and for the most part everything seems to be working until recently.
Setup is we have 2 Nexus 5k switches connected via Dark FIber from Site A to Site B. Site A is sending the multicast traffc and Site B is receiving it.

I am not a network person, but I am not sure our Network Team is qualified either. For a long time we have been using a dying Cisco 2950 100/MB switch for imaging our computers using GhostCast. Multicasting on the 2950 was never an issue other than it was flooding the switch and making all the other ports unusable. But at least the multicast portion was imaging with decent times. We had two Intel Pro NICs teamed to get 200 MB/s and a typical multicast session was about 6.5 minutes. When using only 1 NIC, it takes about 8.5. Running two concurrent unicast or multicast sessions, well that is a different story. It then triples or quadruples the time.
Now we have a 3560G setup. A single session takes a little over 3 minutes. If we multicast off of this switch, the time is about 12.5 minutes. That is 4 minutes longer than the 2950! If I run 3 concurrent unicast sessions, it takes all of them between 3.5 to 4 minutes. So obviously there is an issue with multicasting.
The switch is in a lab separate from the production network. The server with our ghost images is plugged directly into the switch and so are the computers we are imaging. From what I was told from the Network Team is that IGMP snooping is on, but multicasting is off. He said that multicasting does not need to be turned on since all traffic is going through the local switch. Probably true since our old switch didn't have multicast turned on either, but it still imaged using multicast faster.
Below are some screen shots of the imaging. The first one is the 2950 using multicast to 3 laptops. The second one is the 3560 using multicast to 3 laptops. Finally is the 3560 using 3 unicast sessions to the same 3 laptops.

Here is my basic network layout for multicasting for Syn-apps
Multicast Source-->3750 SW (add PIM SM-DM? Yes/No)-->3845 WAN Router (add PIM SM-DM? Yes/No)-->T1-->2821 (add PIM SM-DM? Yes/No)-->3560 SW (add PIM SM-DM? Yes/No)
OK, in this is it necessary to configure "IP Multicast-routing" on the switches? Do I configure PIM on all interfaces that will handle multicasting (router and switches?) If PIM is enabled on the 3750 do I need PIM configured between the 3845 and the 2821 ? Do I configure the Auto-RP on the 3750 or the 3845 ?

going through the article below looks like its not supported

What are the options I have next ? Can I upgrade to LMS 3.3 or only do an upgrade for DFM ?
Want to avoid LMS 4 as that's an installation from scratch.

I've been asked whether we can use HP-branded 10G SFP+s (P/N 455885-001) in Nexus 2Ks to provide 10G connections to HP C-Class enclosures. We've used HP-branded twinax, and Cisco-branded SFP+s and twinax, but we have a raft of HP 10G SFP+s sat in a store room gathering dust and now we want to save some money by not having to buy the Cisco parts to match.

Currently we do not have multicat routing enabled on either of our 2x Sup720-10G 6509 Switches. We have no intention of doing so either. I am looking for clarification on how mutlicasting operates within a Vlan.
IOS: s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-33.SXH2a.bin
Our Vlan has IGMP snooping enabled. Here is the output.
6509Switch#sh ip igmp inter vlan 25
Vlan25 is up, line protocol is up
Internet address is 10.1.1.254/24
IGMP is disabled on interface
we do not want to disable IGMP due to this one concern that I can't find documented. If we disable IGMP snooping on the vlan, what happens to multicast packets with a TTL > 1. Do they get flooded to the entire switch and all Vlans? Or does it stay within the Vlan?

It act's about the CISCO WC210 WLAN Camera.
We are using the WVC210 WLAN-Cameras (URL), this camera has a web server, so is accessible over a normal web-browser, to see the video transmission.
We just set it up with a normal WLAN-Router, so the camera is connected wireless to the router, and this router is connected to the internet (WAN). With the cisco video-software or the web-interface, it's now possible to stream the video.
Now we like to stream the Video on our Website, so people what visit our site can take a look at our company and so on.We are able to stream the Video with the MJEPG-Format, like the camera web-interfaces offers...
The problem is, with normal ip-transfer method, each user would connect directly to the camera and increases the data-transfer, the internet-connection will than overload easily. But the camera supports multi-casting, so the camera only transmit one data stream and all clients connected to this stream will receive the packages.
Our problem is, we do not have any knowledge about multi-casting and how it works, the camera has a normal ip-address and a pre-configured multicast address with group name, so how can we connect a client to this multicast group, without increasing the data-transfer with each new user? Would you recommend us to use the multicast function of this camera or put a server between the camera and the website?
How we can set up this multicast service and easily get a player for the stream on our website, without using many plug ins or special apps ?

Configuring OSPFv2 on a Nexus 5K switches, after configuring area 0 or area 10 it shows as 0.0.0.0 or 0.0.0.10 instead, I'm planning to uplink a couple of ASAs with OSPF enabled, just wondering if the area format showing will be a problem, is this how is supposed to look in the Nexus 5K? and will the 5K be able to form adjacensies with other non-Nexus devices that have area 0 and 10?

Within our small lan we have a core 3750, that handles our intervlan routing and is the core of the network. I recently looked into multicasting and set up a lab test with a 3550 with an EMI image and got the config to multicast to all vlans from one vlan, ready to go, at which point I found that our 3750 is IPBASE and doesn’t support multicasting. Currently upgrading the switch or image is not an option due to funding. My question is would it be possible and advisable to install our lab 3550 as a leg off the core, and in some way route multicasting traffic through that?I just cant get my head around the concept of having a core switch essentially routing all vlans, and then having another switch route the same vlan traffic again for multicasting to all the vlans again.

How do i enable InterVLAN MultiCasting. I have a WS-C3560G-24TS as my core switch and it does InterVLAN Routing. I have a Server VLAN (70) and Workstation VLAN (71). I have a server that i have set up to deploy images to computers. Up to this point i have only done one computer at a time, so unicasting was ok. I would like to be able to Multicast to multiple computers, but am unsure what i need to do on the switch (if anything) to enable this.

I've got a DIR-655 that I use as a wireless access point/switch (dhcp off) behind my Actiontec Verizon Fios router. The DIR-655 is in the basement and has my PS3 and Xbox hard wired to it.I've got playon server setup on my pc upstairs which is connected wireless to the Actiontec router. If I connect my ps3 wirelessly to the Actiontec, it immediately sees the playon server and streams movies without issue. However, when I hardwire the PS3 to the DIR-655, it will not pickup the playon server connected to the Actiontec router.I've got dhcp turned off and multicasting turned on under advanced settings of the Dlink.

I have 2 NEXUS switches in VPC. When I create/delete a VLAN gets updated in the same switch, but the VLAN information does not get propagated to the neighboring switch. Revision number remains the same even if I modify the VLAN. Had also tried changing the VTP status to transparent mode & reverting it to client mode but no luck.Have double confirmed on the VTP domain names & password. However the same setup in different location which works perfectly fine.

I am trying to understand what load balancing method is used on a port channel on a Nexus switch . I have a server connected by a VPC to two Nexus switches. The nexus switches are only acting as layer 2 switches. I have a 6509 connected via a upstream link that does all of the routing for my VLANS. If have a server connected to the Nexus switches and it talks to a server on my 6509 what load balancing happens on the Nexus going across VPC 27 which is a layer 2 trunk going up to my 6509. Is it done on layer 2 or layer 3 flows?
My Nexus shows the default load balancing configurations
Port Channel Load-Balancing Configuration:System: source-dest-ip
Port Channel Load-Balancing Addresses Used Per-Protocol:Non-IP: source-dest-macIP: source-dest-ip source-dest-mac

We are looking forward to implement IBM BladeCentre Swiches connectivity with Nexus 2k module.I would like to brief you about my network over as follows:
Coreswitch : 6513 ( Layer 3 switch + Spanning Tree root)
Nexus 5010 : Layer 2 switch
Nexus 2k 10G ports based module.
Currentl Solution : we want to connect the IBM Blade Switches (4) as demonstrated in the attached diagram which will be connected to Nexus 2k module as Ether-channel Access port.
Initially we been proposed by our vendor with this design and Now vendor is recommending us to connect the Blade switch etiher to Nexus 5k switch or directly to 6513 core-switches instead of Nexus 2k modules as they say Nexus 2k modules are only to connect the Edge devices .
We do not have ports available on Nexus 5010 to connect the cables from IBM Blade Centre Switches. Otherthan that, incase if we go ahead and connect the IBM Blade switches as access ether-channel access port with Nexus 2k module what are consequences we have to face realted Spanning tree or any other.

Connecting a legacy Nortel switch (425/450/470/BPS) to a Nexus 7000 via gigabit fiber? I have a customer trying to do it and they say that the connection never comes up. The support on the Nortel stuff is long since expired, so Avaya is not being particularly useful. Apparently Cisco says the issue is "fast link pulse to the BayStack to determine the capabilities of the uplink and the BayStack is returning all zeros." I have not verified this and actually have not yet gotten my hands on the Nexus side of things
