Cisco Switching/Routing :: 6500 / Nexus OSPF Process Limit?
Jan 11, 2012
We are cutting over from 6500 IOS to Nexus 7000 and have hit "Maximum ospf feature instance limit reached." as we configured up the 7 existing ospf processes - the limit is 4. These existing processes are for various vrf contexts we have. I see you can run multiple vrf contexts under one process - but how does that work in a mixed environment where the ospf neighbours are still ios 6500s? They still expect to see different ospf process id per vrf.

I've been reading the documentation for the new 3750v2 switch, and I'm wondering is the IPBase license supports FULL OSPF. The product sheet notes that it supports OSPF in the IPBase license, but then further down the page it notes that for advanced routing functions (EIGRP,OSPF) you need the IPServices license. Are there any limitations to the OSPF process on a 3750v2 with the IPBase license?

I have two ospf processes running on a single 3570 edge router that has a dedicated transport circuit back to our network core. We are adding an additional "transport" only circuit into a new location that is also apart of the second ospf process backbone which will connect back to our core. There will also be a 3750 for this new circuit termination. Currently we are only redistributing ospf process 2 into ospf process 1 (1 = core backbone).
#router ospf 1
#redistribute ospf 2 subnet
We have no need to have ospf process 1 redistributed into the process 2 tables. That being said, when we add an additional transport ciruit, or path back to our core backbone, will this configuration present any issues with the redistribution process and failover.

We have an existing network with a core 6500 as a VSS connecting 4 buildings with 4500 chassis under which number of L2 switches are connected. Currunlty we are using RSTP in ring for redundancy but we want to use OSPF in LAN for faster conversion. All the VLAN's are created on 6500.

I manage a small/medium sized campus network consisting of 4 Cisco 6500 series chassis (each with SUP720's) and a couple hundred Cisco 3550/3560/2960 edge switches. We recently completed a new leg of fiber that will make a completed loop between all of the 6500's .... before I make the pyhsical connection I need to figure out my OSPF entries on each 6500 switch.

We will be converting two 6500s to VSS. Each chassis has a Sup2T module, fwsm, 6908-10G blade, wism1 blades and two or three 6748-SFP blades. I was wondering how long the conversion process takes? If I remember correctly at the 2012 networkers lab it took maybe 10 minutes while using Sup720s. The instructor mentioned that with Sup2Ts it would convert a lot faster.

I have 2 Nexus 5596UPs with a layer 3 cards that are exhibiting some very peculiar behavior. The systems are running 5.1(3)N1(1).I have configured 2 VRF contexts each running their own OSPF process. There is a static gateway of last resort configured on each VRF, which is to an upstream pair of 5585X's in Active/Active. Each OSPF process has the "default-information originate always" command configured, however, backbone neighbors are not recieving a gateway of last resort from the 5596UPs. The applicable configurations are show below. All other routing information is passing correctly between devices in the network. This network is not production, it is a proof of concept for a larger implementation.

Currently the OSPF network consist of 2 segment route via static route. One is AREA 0 and another AREA 10.Both network are seperate entity, only static route to route between 2 networks. But the static route do not provide the dynamically and flexibility, I plan to run routing between 2 networks via VLAN160 and VLAN162.
I still want to manitnace it was 2 different OSPFrouting domain. Can I run OSPF with differrent OSPF porcess ID?

I am observing some strange behaviour related to the routing table, almost all external routes and some inter-area routes are getting refreshed every 10 seconds.
I am getting more than 1000 entries after running 'sh ip route | i 00:00:0', these external routes are being advertised by a neighbor 6500 which redistributing these static routes.
Platform is 6500 with SUP-720

We have an OSPF network with four 6500 Distribution Switches. They are fully meshed and see each other as peers and are sharing routes. Off of one pair (Border) there is a setup of 3750G siwtches that go off to another network and they do not run OSPF. Between the Border Dist and the 3750G Switches we run HSRP. The 3750G side uses HSRP GP 192 and the Dist Side uses HSRP 192.There are static routes on the 3750G pointing to the Dist HSRP address to get back to network.Pings fail from the OSPF side to the HSRP address on the 3750G side.If I do a trace from the OSPF side to the HSRP address it hits one border dist switch then the other and fails. If I have static routes on both border dist switches pointing to the HSRP on the 3750side, do we need to change the metric on one dist so that it is preferred over the other or should the router Id take care of that?

I'm looking to redistribute static routes in to OSPF on a Nexus 7k. To do this I'll be using a route-map with a match statement. My question is can you match routes using an ACL, a prefic-list or both. The reason that I ask is that in some docs I've read it states the following:
IP access lists—(For policy-based routing only). Match based on source or destination IP address, protocol, or QoS parameters. This tends to indicate that you can't use IP access lists for the match criteria for redistribution.

I have a Catalyst switch that is redistributing some static routes into OSPF. These are received on a Nexus 7K and appear in the database however the 7K does not add them to its routing table, one of the routes is ignored and not added. I haven't got a clue why this is happening.
The routes on the Catalyst are as follows with ID of 172.30.255.22:
ip route 172.24.59.0 255.255.255.0 10.56.7.46
ip route 192.168.168.0 255.255.255.0 10.56.7.62
on the 7K the database shows:
172.24.59.0 172.30.255.22 1374 0x80001a44 0x1a48 0
192.168.168.0 172.30.255.22 1374 0x80001a45 0x6c5b 0
The routing table shows:
sh ip ro 172.24.59.0/24IP Route Table for VRF "default"'*' denotes best ucast next-hop'**' denotes best mcast next-hop'[x/y]' denotes [preference/metric]
172.24.59.0/24, ubest/mbest: 1/0 *via 172.30.253.10, Po7, [110/20], 20w4d, ospf-NCC, type-2
sh ip ro 192.168.168.0/24IP Route Table for VRF "default"'*' denotes best ucast next-hop'**' denotes best mcast next-hop'[x/y]' denotes [preference/metric] Route not found

I have an environment where i have two nexus 7010 switches, along with 2 nexus 5510's. I need to run OSPF as a layer 3 routing protocol between the vpc peer links. I have 1 link being used as a keep alive link, and 3 other links being used as a VpC link.
1) Is it best to configure a separate Vpc VLAN i.e 1010
2) Is it best to configure a vrf context keep-alive
3) just have the management address as the peer ip's.

Ok I didn't setup my OSPF on my 7010. Today I found out that any static route I put into my 7010 gets sent into to my MPLS network. My 6509's you have to "Tag" the static rout for this to happen. Was under the impression the same was necessary for the 7010 or at least it had to "match" an access list. How can I fix the below so that by default all static routes are not resdistributed into OSPF?

I'm currently working on a plan to migrate our 6500's over to our new 7010's. At the time of the migration I want to tighten up our OSPF design and configure OSPF for "passive-interface default" then allow only those interfaces that should have OSPF neighbors to send the hellos. The issue is that the command is not showing up under the OSPF process. What's even more interesting is that the Nexus 5.x Unicast Routing Configuration Guide shows that the "passive-interface default" command should be an option to enter.
I'm currently running version 5.1(4) (though looking to upgrade to 5.2 during my migration testing). I would rather configure the passive-interface via the routing process versus having to enter it on every interface.

The diagram below is the configuration we are looking to deploy, that way because we do not have VSS on the 6500 switches so we can not create only one Etherchannel to the 6500s.Our blades inserted on the UCS chassis have INTEL dual port cards, so they do not support full failover.
Questions I have are.
- Is this my best deployment choice?
- vPC highly depend on the management interface on the Nexus 5000 for the keep alive peer monitoring, so what is going to happen if the vPC brakes due to:
- one of the 6500 goes down
- STP?
- What is going to happend with the Etherchannels on the remaining 6500?
- the Management interface goes down for any other reason
- which one is going to be the primary NEXUS?
Below is the list of devices involved and the configuration for the Nexus 5000 and 65000.
Devices
· 2 Cisco Catalyst with two WS-SUP720-3B each (no VSS)
· 2 Cisco Nexus 5010
· 2 Cisco UCS 6120xp
· 2 UCS Chassis
- 4 Cisco B200-M1 blades (2 each chassis)
- Dual 10Gb Intel card (1 per blade)

I'm trying to get ERSPAN working with an ERSPAN source on a Nexus 5548 and the ERSPAN destination on a Catalyst 6500.
The configuration on the Nexus is as follows:
[...]
interface loopback0
ip address 192.168.2.133/32
[Code].....
If I do a netdr capture I can see ERSPAN traffic sourced from the Nexus reaching the C6500, but there doesn't appear to be anything sent out the ERSPAN destination inerface (Gi4/6) and there's nothing being received by the probe connected to that interface. I know the traffic seen with netdr is definitely the ERSPAN traffic sourced from the Nexus as I've changed the TTL and DSCP values within the monitor session on the Nexus and can see those changes reflected on the C6500 netdr capture. The attached is a screen grab of the show netdr capture started with debug netdr capture soure-ip-address 192.168.2.133.
When I look at the interface I see it shown as up/down (monitoring), but no output or counters clocking up. If I run a local SPAN session on the C6500 it works fine.
I've tried changing the destination IP address from that assigned to the C6500 Loopback interface to an IP address assigned to a physical interface, but that still doens't work.
The hardware in the C6500 is WS-SUP720-BASE Hw version 3.2 with WS-F6K-PFC3B Hw version 2.4. The IOS version is 12.2(33)SXI6.

need to know the OSPF best design. I have a customer currently running their OSPF only in two area. Area 0 is provider reside and area 1 reside 700 hundred over of router including HQ router and remote branch router connecting to metro-E 10Mbps networks. Is this design have any weakness? Area 1 about 800 hundred router reside in, the HQ model is cisco router 7200 and remote end is cisco router 1841.Let's say they want a solution, for 3G remote router connect back to the HQ using Lease line with a fixed IP. Using DMVPN and OSPF communicating back to HQ. What should we aware when designing and implementing for the OSPF best practice. They have 700 hundred over remote branch need to terminate back to their HQ. I read cisco recommend an area should not be more than 50 router and per-area no more than 28 area.
