Cisco Switching/Routing :: Catalyst 2960 Drops Packets After Enabling QoS

Nov 4, 2011

why the QoS deployment causes ports on 2960 switches to drop packets although there is no bandwidth contension? (output bit/second of the interface)packet drops at threshold 1, queue 2 ( queue 3 in config)

We are using Catalyst 2960 switches and are experiencing issues with QoS. After the QoS, we experience a lot of packet drops and it make the network slow. It appears that the slow performance relates to the egress queuing of each port.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Catalyst 4948 Drops Truncated Packets?

Jan 4, 2012

I'm using a Catalyst 4948. It seems to drop all truncated packets. I don't know whether this is an expected behavior.I'm developing a program which processes packets in the following steps:

1) capture packets
2) if a packet is too long, truncate it to a certain length
3) insert a vlan tag (say 100) to each packet
4) send them to the switch

Mac address learning is disabled on the vlan 100, so the packets should be seen at all ports of the vlan. However, I only observed untruncated packets. Truncated packets seemed to be dropped by the switch.The summary of the source port is:

c4948-01#show interfaces gigabitEthernet 1/22 summary
......
Interface               IHQ   IQD  OHQ   OQD  RXBS RXPS  TXBS TXPS TRTL
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
* GigabitEthernet1/22      0     0    0     0 4018000  7390  2000    3    0

The receiving speed was approximately equal to what I sent.The summary of another vlan 100 port is:

c4948-01#show interfaces gigabitEthernet 1/18 summary
......
Interface               IHQ   IQD  OHQ   OQD  RXBS RXPS  TXBS TXPS TRTL
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
* GigabitEthernet1/18      0     0    0     0     0    0  3000    4    0

Almost no packets were output.I see a Cisco document says "ingress port drops corrupted packets" [URL] then my questions are:

1) Is this the root cause of dropping truncated packets?

2) What criteria does a switch use to check corrupted packets? My understanding is that truncated packets could have wrong L3 and L4 data, but they can't be detected at L2.

3) If switch drops mal-format packets, can we disable this feature?

I want to be sure that these are the only needed comands and that they won t generate any disruption.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Catalyst 3560 Switch Won't Forward Packets To Or From MAC Address

Aug 9, 2012

I have some Ethernet-connected cameras that all have the same Ethernet MAC address FF:FF:FF:0A:0A:0A. They were originally designed to directly connect to a Windows PC, but they can also connect through a simple unmanaged switch.A Catalyst 3560 switch won't forward packets to or from anything with that MAC address, at least not by default. Is there a way to convince the switch to do so?

It was my hope to replace the dedicated connections we have for these cameras with a separate VLAN for each camera, and switch them through our existing switch network. Given that all of the cameras use the same MAC address, putting them on the same network is out of the question, but different VLANs, where the only two devices on each VLAN were the camera and the PC that uses it, would be fine.

The switches run IOS 12.2(55) SE through SE3. I learned the camera MAC address from the PC's ARP table while the camera software runs; it turns out the cameras don't have a full IP stack either and don't even do ICMP.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960 High Output Drops

Aug 2, 2010

I have quite a few 2960's in a manufacturing environment that are experiencing a large number of Total Output Drops.  The gigabit uplinks arn't even close to fully subscribed and if I'm lucky they run at a peak of 4 - 5 Mb on a 1Gb uplink.  Something really funky is going on.  The individual switchports seem to have the total output drops and the uplinks at 1Gb do not have any output drops and never peak above 20Mb over a 3 month span on a 1Gb link.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960 Drops Multicast Receiver

Jun 17, 2012

A 2960G switch is doing IGMP snooping and is configured as the querier. There is no multicast routing.

Port 1 - Video Set Top Box A
Port 2 - Video Set Top Box B
Port 3 - Multicast Source

Both Set Top Boxes A & B are set to receive the video delivered in the same multicast group.Every 60 seconds the switch generates an IGMP General Query message which is sent out all the ports in the VLAN.There is a 10 second timeout in the Query message. Devices that wish to join (or remain joined) to the multicast group have this amount of time to respond with a Join Message directed at the multicast group. Devices deliberately wait a random duration within the timeout time before replying.

For some reason (which I don't understand), if the switch receives a Join request message from a Set Top Box, it forwards that messages out of the port to the other Set Top Box. So, let's say Box A responded with the Join Message first. Box B now sees the Join message and now thinks there is another multicast receiver on its branch of the network, so it suppresses its Join Message to avoid sending an unnecessary message.If by chance Box A responds first 2 or 3 times in a row, the switch will not have seen a response from port 2 for awhile, so it prunes that port from the multicast. Eventually, Box B responds first and gets re-joined onto the multicast. It is now Box A that may get pruned if it is consecutively slower.

How do I prevent the switch from replicating the Join message out to the other Set Top Box? I have verified this behavior with Wireshark. But, I believe the Join message is only supposed to be forwarded to a multicast router (if there is one - and there isn't), not to other ports.The 2960 is running 12.2(58) SE2.

We plan on having Port-Channels spanning across Switch 1 - Master and Switch 2 (Member 3) of identical port types. Switch 3 (Member 2) is going to have 2 10GIG port channel created.

Is there going to be a problem renumbering the stack as they physically sit or should I just configure the devices based on thier logical member numbers.
