I have a Cisco 2940 switch and a Cisco 1841 router. I want to build two different VLAN networks on the switch, which do not have to communicate one with each other, but those VLANS should communicate with the router.
 
I read a lot of articles, i tried to configure properly the switch and the router but i still don't get them work.
 
I set on the switch, the GigabitEthernet 0/1 port to Trunk port and i had to set it a native VLAN. The problem is that only from that native VLAN, i can ping the router.

We have a cisco 3750-48 port switch.We have a few SVI's configured and some static routes configured.I had created a new interface vlan and gave it an IP. I can ping the gateway.
 
Now I want to add a static route to go out that interface.when I add: ip route 10.x.x.x 255.255.255.0 10.52.10.1
 
it eccepts it (no errors) But, it does not show in the routing table nor in the config? How to add the static route to go out that vlan interface.

scenario: configured IPv6 iBGP link between this switch and a router. the router is announcing 1 (test) route. the switch sees the route properly, but doesn't add it to routing table (the route never gets to be "best path", although it should be).

why the QoS deployment causes ports on 2960 switches to drop packets although there is no bandwidth contension? (output bit/second of the interface)packet drops at threshold 1, queue 2 ( queue 3 in config)
 
We are using Catalyst 2960 switches and are experiencing issues with QoS. After the QoS, we experience a lot of packet drops and it make the network slow. It appears that the slow performance relates to the egress queuing of each port.

I have a Catalyst Switch that is been used as a SAN switch providing ISCSI connection for servers.The total output drops of the interfaces connected to the SAN and some connected to the servers keep increasing.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Catalyst 4948 Drops Truncated Packets?

I'm using a Catalyst 4948. It seems to drop all truncated packets. I don't know whether this is an expected behavior.I'm developing a program which processes packets in the following steps:

1) capture packets
2) if a packet is too long, truncate it to a certain length
3) insert a vlan tag (say 100) to each packet
4) send them to the switch
 
Mac address learning is disabled on the vlan 100, so the packets should be seen at all ports of the vlan. However, I only observed untruncated packets. Truncated packets seemed to be dropped by the switch.The summary of the source port is:

Almost no packets were output.I see a Cisco document says "ingress port drops corrupted packets" [URL] then my questions are:
 
1) Is this the root cause of dropping truncated packets?

2) What criteria does a switch use to check corrupted packets? My understanding is that truncated packets could have wrong L3 and L4 data, but they can't be detected at L2.

3) If switch drops mal-format packets, can we disable this feature?

I have a Cisco Catalyst 2940 switch, eight ports. Ports 1-4 are connected to a media converter A. Ports 5-6 and 7-8 goes to two separate servers, B and C. Let's say I want traffic from B->5->1->A then through some equipment (which just pushes the data) and back through A->2->6->C without the data just recognizing a shorter path B->5->6->C and thereby skipping the equipment in between. Is this possible without a router? Ridiculous set-up? Yes, though the switch is the only means I have to connect to the media converter in this case.

We're having kind of a problem with our Catalyst 4507r switches. If we do a "show interface" command we're getting a lot of "Total output drops" on some of our interfaces. It seems to be most of the time on the same vlan.I was wondering if it has got something to do with QOS or queue selection As we don't have any QOS markings configured, is it possible that all traffic is using only one of the four tx queue's?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2940 - MacBook Pro - Can't Reach ISP

I have this strange problem with my Macbook pro, when I connect it to my cisco 2940 8 port switch then I can reach my ISP (websites eg. google.com) in like 2 minuttes, then something is happening on my router, because suddenly I can´t reach my ISP 
 
This is what I have found out so far:
 
1. when I lose connection to my ISP then I can only ping internal ip addresses eg. another computer in my network

2. if I renew my ip address on the Macbook then it works again in 2 minutts, then the same happens again. This is my network setup:
 
Router -> Switch 1 -> Switch 2
 
I also know that it is not the Macbook, because it have got a new motherboard, and it have been reinstalled
also if I use the Macbook on a other network then it works fine.
 
All my other computers ( windows and linux ) works fine, no problems.
 
To me it looks like it is a Nat and/or DNS problem, but I can´t fine out what it is.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Bonding Two Interfaces On Two 2940 Switches

I have two switches (sanitized configs attached) and I am trying to bond int gi0/1 and gi0/2 between the two. Then I need int gi0/3 back to the main LAN switches. These are new Vlans created 982 and 983 for these switches. Question #1: do the configurations look correct? I haven't placed any laptops on the interfaces to test interconnectivity yet but I am wondering if it will work with no default routes.
 
The admin team needs these switches at location A for setup then they will be moved to Location B. The only thing that sucks for me is that the network admin before me created gateway interfaces for all the local Vlans on a main router as sub interfaces. For example, for these two subnets, I need to create subinterfaces below (at location A), which is why a gave the Vlan on the switches, ip addresses.

I have been looking into this for a while and I can't seem to figure out why my 2nd vlan is not able to connect properly to the net.
 
My switch has 12 ports where my devices connects directly, they are all on Vlan 1 and they all work perfectly. on Port 12 I have a dlink router that is connected to a cable modem. the dlink router has an Ip address of 192.168.0.20
 
I created a second vlan (vlan2) and enabled dhcp relay on it. then I assigned port 9 on the switch to  (vlan2)my laptop which is connected to port 9 seems to get an ip address fine and able to ping only some devices on my network (vlan1) and is not able to go out to the internet.  I think it has to do with the routes. i try to implement layer 2 qos in 2960. when i complete to configure the switch, i want to test the qos.PC1 conect to switch port 1,PC2 conect to switch port 2 . PC1 is source teminal. i use skydata.exe and FTP for the test.

when use the skydata ,the PC2 speed can reach 10mbps.when use the FTP , the PC2 only can reach 1.2mbps. why?

I can use Putty to SSH into my new switch (Directly connected to my laptop  with ethernet cable), but I cant log into my switch.

It doesnt like my password, but I have only set 1 password (king) on this switch. I've configured 3 other switches with SSH and had no problem. Been trouble shooting for awhile and It'd be great if I could have a 2nd set of eyes take a peek, Also, my running config is attached.

They are numbered J6, J7, & J8 respectivelyI found the jumpers inside and put the jumpers on them and ran the command expecting it to remove any old configurations I had on the switch and bring it back to factory state, but I was wrong.

I am using a catalyst 2970 switch for 2 vlans. Corporate data and a separate VLAN for backups. What I want to do is create an LACP etherchannel to the switch and also trunk these ports so the server is part of both VLANS.Due to fact that some of these servers are on totally separated networks, they really shouldn't be able to talk to the backup server. Creating the VLAN for backups works to achieve this. I plan to create inbound ACLs on each port to allow only the ports and IPs for the backup network and allow everything we need for corporate data.I read somewhere that you can't have ACLs on an etherchannel and I just want to get it all straightened out. I notice I can't add an access group to the port-channel itself but I can on the port- channel member ports. Is this all I need to do or does this not work?

This switch runs CatOS, not IOS.When power is applied to the switch, the fans turn on as normal, but no LEDs are lit on the front.  There are green LEDs lit next to the jumpers inside, but that is all.  I am not able to get any response from it on the console at all anymore.The LEDs that are lit green inside are labeled "CR5" and CR6".

I have inhereted a network in a school that is using a Cisco Catalyst 500 series switch. Previously, it appears that this switch was never managed (just plugged in and using it's default configuration). I am trying to change that and be able to control the switch using the Network Assistant or just the web-based device manager. I understand that you cannot perform the initial configuration with anything past Windows XP, because the broadcast flag setting past XP causes an issue where the IP address of the management computer is assigned but not the default gateway. Despite this, I am still unable to connect to the switch for management purposes. Here is a list of the steps I have taken, all of which have been unsuccessful:
 
1) I tried using a computer running Windows XP. The same issue occurred. It was assigned an IP address from the switch but did not get a default gateway. It was unable to access what should have been the default IP of the switch; 169.254.0.1

2) I tried it in Windows Vista by editing the registry to turn broadcasting off. It still did not work.

3) I tried it in Windows 7. Still no luck.

4) In all 3 operating systems, I tried using the "Advanced" setting in the TCP/IP configuration to add a default gateway of 169.254.0.1 to no avail.

is it possible to run a Catalyst 4500 as pure Layer 2 Switch, i.e. disabling "ip routing", but still managing the switch via Fa1, i.e. the defautl mgmtVrf vrf ?I tried the following:

I was not able to reach the Switch even from the same subnet. Only after enabling ip routing I could manage the Switch. I haven't found any command to set ip default-gateway for a vrf. Any workaround to keep routing disabled, but still manageable via VRF?

Cisco :: Configure A 2940 Switch To Trunk?

I'm trying to configure a 2940 switch to trunk. I just can't get it to work.On the interface I have added: switchport mode trunk The default is encap for this switch is dot1q, so there is no need, or ability to add/change the encap mode. Also all vlans are being allowed by default. I still can't get any port to trunk. Need to get G0/1 to trunk, have also tried to trunk f0/6 to the switch in my office. Also can't find the command to change the management VLAN. I do not use vlan 1 for management. Can I change the Mang VLAN on this switch?

Cisco LAN :: Using A 2940 As Extremely Simple Switch / Hub?

I am trying to find out if its possible to use an existing CISCO 2940 Switch that we have here at our office as a hub?  Im sure that borders on insane however, let me break down what we have currently and what I'd like to do.
 
We currently have a very nice setup here at work, with no problems whatsoever, however; we hired a new person and brought in some new printers and we are running out of wall jacks.  Rather then run all new cabling and adding new outlets/faceplates etc... We were just gonna go purchase a simple Netgear 5 port switch/hub from the Local Comp store here in town.  We found in our server room a what appears to fully functional and operational cisco 2940 8 Port Switch with a Gigabit port. 
 
All IPs in the office are assigned via DHCP, so....on to the meat of my question -- I tried to plug this into our network and I can't get any connectivity out at all. All the ports light up green etc when I plug in the comps but they aren't pulling valid IPs. 
 
I want to reset this thing and start from the ground up, I am not scared of going into the IOS and modifying what needs to be done...as long as I got a good enough walk through.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960G High Output Drops Only On Gigabit Switch

I just got a Cisco 2960G 24-port gigabit switch so that our HP servers can have a Gigabit connection to the network. I moved 2 servers to it (HP Proliant DL380's)  but they don't actually seem to be able to achieve even close to 1000Gbps. I ran same some LAN bandwidth tests and it was showing only around 200-300 Mbps between all of them. I also ran a network stress test utility, LAN Tornado, and it was showing packet loss as high as 60% when on gigabit, and only .07% when on 100Mbps.
 
-Both the NIC's and the switch ports are set to 1000/Full

-Currently using Cat5e cabling no more than 25Ft in length (I know Cat6 would be better but Cat5e is supposed to support Gigabit)

-All servers are on the same VLAN
 
Here are the port statistics when running just a stress test @ 10Mbps that had a 45% packet loss. What's odd though is when I set the servers and switches to 100Mbps, I get less than 1% packet loss.
