Cisco Switching/Routing :: Nexus 7K Power Budget Configuration
Sep 10, 2012
I would like to know if the power the Nexus 7K allocates per module is configurable? For example, we are only using the 8 didicated ports on our N7K-M132XP-12 card. The Nexus budgets 750W for the module, but given that we will only ever use 8 of the 32 ports we would like to allocate the remaining power elsewhere.

What is the power consumption of the 6-port 40G M2 module for the NExus 7K?
It says "TBD" on the data sheet for the M2....and it says nothing about power for the Supervisos.
I need to know what the power draw is on a 7009 chassis, with 1 SUP and 5 of these cards....

How to properly power down the Nexus 5000 and the fabric interconnect switches? I have looked up and down cisco's and google web for steps, but they are all coming back with the answer to just disconnect the power cables after you have power down all the windows os and exs servers. Before i do that, I just wanted to make sure that that's the correct way to do it or if there are actual commands that I will need to run on the devices to properly power down. I know that the FI do have a command to reboot, but i need them to completely be power down.

We just purchased a Nexus 7010 switch and we are at a stand still with our COLO trying to figure out what power source should be provided. APC recommends a 50amp 3phase vertical cabinet PDU (AP7867). What type of power sourcereakers will be sufficient in handling the Nexus 7k /w (3) power supplies? Do the COLO need to provide single phase or 3 phase power recepticals?

Any issues are reported while configuring power stack ? We did several times with 12.2.58SE1 and SE2, sometimes the power stack is created automatically, sometimes needs to be configured manually. Looks like the behavior is not the same. Maybe it depends on the number/type of switches and number/type of power supplies.

I am seeing an issue that after deleting/recreating one of the VDC in Nexus 7K, VLAN is not been able to be configured within the VDC although it is not actually a reserved VLAN. Could it be anything missing in the license installation? the version of the image is NX-OS 6.1.2
StorageVDC(config)# vlan 100

We have two Nexus switches in our network, one of them is Nexus5020 other Nexus5596UP. System image is identical on both switches 5.2(1)N1(4). When we try to setup VPC between these switches we see that all configured vlans on VPC peer link between Nexus switches are blocked by spanning tree protocol with message "Bridge Assurance Inconsistent, VPC Peer-link Inconsistent". We still can't solve this problem.

I am looking to implement a QoS policy on a pair of Nexus 5548 UPs. FCoE is a factor here. I have created the following configuration and would like to get a few pairs of eyes to take a look at this for a quick sanity check.
How to make sure this config is valid. Also, I realize I'm applying an MTU of 9216 to all classes right now, this will be phased out incrementally.
class-map type qos match-all class-platinum
match cos 5
class-map type qos match-all class-gold
match cos 4
class-map type qos class-fcoe

I have a Cisco Nexus 3064 that I am using as part of a flat network for the Lab. I have 30 Virtualization Servers(MS HyperV and VMware vSphere) connected to this switch and I want to enable jumbo frames. The Virtualization Servers are able to ping the local VM's using 8K bytes. However I am unable to ping from server to server using 8K bytes. I have configuration (in abbreviation). All the servers are in the same network which I configured as L2 ports with the "switchport" command. However, the interface "MTU" command is unavailable in L2 mode. I am only able to get the interface "MTU" command only in L3 mode with the "no switchport" command on the interface.
# int eth1/2-45
# no switchport
# mtu 9216
# no shut
I can ping the servers with less than 1500 bytes, but anything larger fails.

What is the purpose of these default configuration lines? What do they mean? I can't find an explanation of them anywhere. I believe some are written to the config when FCoE is enabled..

I have two 5548s as core. 8 FEXs are multihomed (advanced vPC topology?) to both the cores.Suppose, I have to configure a bunch of ports on the FEXs, say Eth101/1/10 - 20. I would login to the first core and apply the configs.
My question is - do I have to do the same on the second core also? Or would the first core replicate the stuff to the second core? I know about port-profiles/CFS and such. But, without that would it automatically sync to second core?
For testing purpose, I went to Core 1 Eth101/1/10 and put a description "TEST". Wrote the config. After 5 minutes logged into second core and did show run Eth101/1/10. But, the description "TEST" didn't show up there.
Also, doing sh run on any FEX port is faster on one of the cores and very slow on second core... all the FEXs have 20 GB uplink to core 1 & 2 (so total 40GB in vPC, max pinning 1)

we've been using IOS for a long time, but are relatively new to NX-OS. We've got a central syslog server that all our devices log to. No matter what we do, we can't get our Nexus switches to log there. Here's my current attempt:
Nexus 7009, NX-OS 6.0(1)
# sh logging server
Logging server: enabled
{redacted}
server severity: debugging
server facility: local7
server VRF: default
[code].....
The default VRF is working. I see log entries in the logfile, but nothing arrives at the syslog server. It's not a config issue on the server, because tcpdump shows that no packets arrive from the IP for loopback 0.

After stacking two 3750X switches, with four equal power-supply's, with StackWise and PowerStack , still got the next message every few hours %PLATFORM_ENV-1-FRU_PS_ACCESS: FRU Power Supply is not responding (gn4m-rt1p08-04-2)( note that the message revers to the second switch in the stack ) although the stackwise and powerstack on the switches is oke and are working correctly. !
Config : Stack-power in power-sharing mode/strict With CLI on the switch : All the power supply's and stack-power details, prio look OK.
Only: LMS prime /inventory/cisco-view/configure/power supply status result : some power supply's are marked as disabled.with the command > power supply 2 slot a off/on I manage to get the status back to "normal", but after a few hours some power supply's are again marked as "disabled".
Looks like SNMP en IOS difference from opinion.

I have a 6500 chassis with 2 power supplies. At the moment I am using the default configuration:
power-redudancy mode redundant
The problem is that an inserted module is in "power deny" state due too insufficient power.
I know, that It's not a good idea to change into combined mode (loss of redundancy), but my customers requested this anyway.
So I will change to combined mode. So here's the 1 million dollar question: "Which modules will go into power deny, if one of my power supplies fails?"
The 6500 config guide states:
"Power supply is removed withredundancy disabled
• System log and syslog messages are generated.
• System power is decreased to the power capability of one supply.
• If there is not enough power for all previously powered-up modules, some modulesare powered down and marked as power-deny in the show power oper state field."
Well, do you know if there's any way to configure some kind of priority? E.g. I definetly don't want by 10Gig Module or WiSM module to be in power deny. Can i statically make sure, those module will be powered on for sure? Like: "power enable module slot_number" How is this calculated? Or is random?

In a stand alone 3750x switch configuration, can the secondary power supply only act as a redundant power supply (active/standby), or can it become a "pool" of power similar to power sharing mode for StackPower (somewhat active/active)? I understand there is no stack involved here but I'm curious if this functionality is possible.

we are planning a Nexus datacenter project with this layout:Our experiences with Nexus switches are not so large until now and the manuals are very extensive. Both N5K´s should be connected directly with all 4 N2K switches. I did not find a layout like this in the manuals. Only a design, where only 2 N2K are connected to one N5K, with this fex config:Now I´m not sure if it is right to make a config like this with the same slots and fex´s or with different slots and fex´s.

If you have a PoE capable switch, is there any way to increase the PoE budget? Especially the 3750 range. I've heard people say that by adding another power supply in the switch you can increase the budget.I've got a 48-port 3750 and I may need to connect a lot of Class III (15.4W) PoE devices. Power budget of a 3750 is 370 Watts, enough for 24 Class III, but likely I'll need more.

I have a 3640a, 3550 and airopoint 350 I use for my home internet connection. I know it's old equipment, but it's all I could afford at the time. Directly plugged into my modem I get about 10 mb/s, plugged into a switch port no greater than 6, and about 5-6 when connected to wireless which is understandable because it's only wireless B. I'm going to downgrade my connection for the time being as I'm paying for excess bandwidth that I'm unable to use, but any more recent, affordable cisco routers that can handle a high speed cable connection? What kind of throughput does the 3550 get? Cisco states a throughput of approximately 45-60mb/s for the 3640a.
