Cisco Switching/Routing :: SFP-H10GB-CU3M Not Working In 2960S

Feb 15, 2013

We have a 2960S using a single SFP-10GBase-SR to our Core switch. We are planning connecting the 2960S to a pair of Nexus 5k switches using Copper SFPs. We are already doing this on another 2960S so I didn't expect any surprises.

When I removed the unused SFP-10GBase-SR from te1/0/2, the interface was removed from the config and a gi1/0/50 was created in its place. Once I inserted the SFP-H10GB-CU3M, I expected that it would create a new te1/0/2 interface, but it didn't. I got the following errors: %GBIC_SECURITY_CRYPT-4-VN_DATA_CRC_ERROR: GBIC in port Gi1/0/50 has bad crc %PM-4-ERR_DISABLE: gbic-invalid error detected on Gi1/0/50, putting Gi1/0/50 in err-disable state

I didn't personally order the cables, but there is no Cisco label on them, so I'm assuming it is a 3rd party SFP. After looking at other posts related to unsupported SFPs, I ran the following commands: no errdisable detect cause gbic-invalid service unsupported-transceiver

After reconnecting the SFP, it didn't go into err-disable, but I still received the following error: %GBIC_SECURITY_CRYPT-4-VN_DATA_CRC_ERROR: GBIC in port Gi1/0/50 has bad crc

My other working 2960S appears to be using 3rd party SFP as well, but I can't see the brand. Is there anything else worth trying or should I just suck it up and order Cisco SFPs?

Cisco Switches :: SFP-H10GB-CU1M SFP+ Copper Cable Module Speed Shows As Unknown

Jul 17, 2012

I have connected 2 SG500x switches using an SFP-H10GB-CU1M SFP+ Copper Cable module.  Since the port shows as a 10G port, I would expect the speed to show as 10G as well.  However, it shows as "Unknown".  This doesn't leave me with confidence that it is being recognized properly.  The link is working properly, but I haven't run tests to verify if I'm getting full 10G throughput or not.  Shouldn't it show 10G as the link speed?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750 - L2 Trunking Versus L3 Switching

Dec 9, 2011

some of our switches have the switchport mode trunk command configured between the 3750 switches but other 3750 switches connected to our 6509 core switch do not have the switchport mode trunk command to permit Vlans from going across the swtiches instead it has an ip address and says no switchport what is the difference between does two. Is trunking used only for Layer 2 and L3 is used to route  interface vlans?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 892W / LAN Versus WAN Ethernet

Feb 14, 2012

I own a Cisco 892W router. The router has 2 WAN ports and 8 switch ports. Now I know -

-WAN ports can create sub interfaces, assigne IPs, cannot be assigned to a VLAN - sounds very much like a routing port. (sh interface gives - Hardware is PQII_PRO_UEC)

-Switch ports are for VLAN assignment, trunking, IP assigment etc,. (sh interface gives Hardware is Fast Ethernet)

I know they are different but at the same time confuced what the difference are? I also know on some 3xxx series switchs you could say "no switchport" and translate a switch port to a layer 3 port. But on 892W you can't do this? Struggeling to understand the difference.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3850 Versus 3750x For New Deployment

May 6, 2013

What is the preferred access switch for new deployment. Choosing between 3850 and 3750x. I have to say that the 3850 wireless features will not be used in this deployment and 4 switch for stack is enough... Looked and read everything that I found in the press, I can not make an informed choice. I bow to 3850, but I was apprehensive following circumstances:1) not too positive reviews2) to long list of open caveats3) to long list of features are not supported in Cisco IOS XE Release 3.2.0SE4) IOS XE : (With regard to the first three points - yes, I understand that the product is new and it has not gone further stage of "childhood diseases" ...Regarding the fourth point - I understand correctly that this is the direction to be moving Cisco Systems  and soon all products migrate from classical IOS to IOS XE and so on?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Ghost Multicast Versus 3750G

Feb 13, 2013

I manage a network with a ghost server, a 3750G, several outside access, and some vlans.This is a very simplify view of this network:

The ghost server is on all vlans connected to a trunk port on the 3750G which is used as a central switch and for basic routing.All equipements connected to vlans 1, 2 or 3 are on 2950 switchs themselves connected to the 3750G on dedicated access ports, each in there respective vlans.

All equipements connected to vlans 1, 2 or 3 have as gateway a vlan interface on the 3750. (10.0.x.3)All the vlan interfaces have route-maps applied on them to redirect traffic to their dedicated outside access.The route-maps match only traffic destinated to the outside.

Everthing is working well but the multicast.When I create a ghost session on the server, I can see computer connecting on it, but the multicast never start.If I use directed broadcast it works with good perfs, but the CPU processes of the 3750 go high because of the IP Input (Till 99%).If I remove the route map from the vlan interface which is on the ghosted network, the multicast works but with poor perfs.If I shutdown the vlan interface the multicast works well with good perfs.

It seems my problems are tied with the Vlan interfaces but I don't know why.

This is a sample of the config:

switch 1 provision ws-c3750g-24ts-1u
system mtu routing 1500
vtp domain SM
vtp mode transparent
ip routing

Cisco Switching/Routing :: IGMP On 6500 Versus 4500

Mar 11, 2012

I encountered a problem migrating configuration from Cisco 4500 with IOS 12.2(53)SG4 to Cisco 6500-VSS with IOS 12.2(33)SXI7.

With 4500, we had  2 servers with JBoss running multicast to build up the cluster. They used 239.X.X.X multicast IP. There was no need to configure "ip igmp snooping vlan XX static XXXX.XXXX.XXXX interface X" neither static arp entry.

When we migrated to 6500 in VSS, we had to do:

mac-address-table static XXXX.XXXX.XXXX vlan XX interface X disable-snooping

With this command, the JBoss cluster worked well. The question is, ¿Is there any difference regarding IGMP in 4500 versus 6500?

Mar 17, 2013

I want to configure accesslists on my Catalyst 3750X-switches to protect different VLANs/networks. Any best-practices about inbound versus outbound accesslists? In my head it is more readable and easier to understand the config when accesslists are assigned outbound on the VLAN to protect instead of assigning them inbound on all possible source-VLANs. But of course, from a performance point-of-view it is better to use inbound access-lists to avoid un-necessary routing etc.

LAN Set Up Versus WLAN

I run my business from a home-office, and have a program that operates off a database.This database is run on what I'll refer to as the "server" computer.I have other laptop and desktop pc's that run this same program, but are referred to as "clients" since they don't house the database and only pull the data from the "server".I can connect wirelessly through my WLAN, but the connection is slow due to the database server. However I am told that a wired network would increase the data transfers tremendously between the machines.I have plenty of ethernet cable and a brand new switch.I run windows 7 64 on all machines that I'd like to connect.What steps do I need to take in order for the "client" machines to connect to the "server" via the LAN and not the WLAN?

Cisco VPN :: ASA 5505 256MB Versus 512MB

Nov 21, 2011

recently I had a power cut in the office and my Cisco ASA 5505 512MB Base 10 user License stopped working.it was not possible to establish L2L VPN.I replaced it with another ASA 5505 with 256MB RAM Base 10 user License.I restored the configuration and everything is working now.The main problem is that before (with the 512MB ASA)  I had two L2L tunnels established  and many clients (up to 30 clients)using the two tunnels. Now with the 256MB ASA when the clients being in the L2L reach 10 clients,the other clients stop working inside the VPN, they cannot reach hosts which are on the other end of the L2L. This could be due to te less amount of RAM ?? Otherwise I can't explain this behaviour.Could I solve this buying the 50 user license upgrade ?But in my previous ASA I had the Basic 10 user license and everything was working with many clients reaching hosts behind the two tunnels.

Cisco Linksys Ea4500 Versus Asus Rt-n66u

Jun 18, 2012

Does the CPU speed make any difference?I'm reading that the Asus offers great Wifi Coverage - which is nice cause both the wife and myself use the laptops a fair bit.. However - most of my devices are currently on a wired setup..through a belkin 1gbit powerline setup.I run a NAS for storage - a separate machine for media serving, 2x ps3s for media streaming a seagate HD+ media player + a sonos bridge and my desktop on the wired setup..As for wireless normally I'd have 3 Androids along with 2 laptops & 5 sonos players...

[code]....

I might have been talking rubbish there - I was sure I'd read somewhere that the Asus unit had a whopping 1gb ram installed vs. the 256mb of the Linksys/Cisco ea4500 - however looking at the specs again, both read @256mb.
