Cisco VPN :: Routing With ASA 5520?
Apr 7, 2013
I have setup IPsec remote vpn users into the Cisco ASA 5520 using Radius into my main network. Works just fine. I have site to site tunnels from my Cisco ASA5520 going to other sites, some of the tunnels have Cisco ASA and some have SonicWalls. I would like my IPSec remote VPN users to be able to traverse into those site to site tunnels to access the remote subnets attached to those tunnels. Do I need to use a combination of routing and ACL's? Or do I just use ACL's only? Or do I just use routing only?

I am working for a large campus network. The network has more than 70 VLANS in a Layer 3 Switch(Catalyst 4503). Customer wants to stop intervlan routing between all vlans except 2 vlans. How will i do that? I have also a Firewall (ASA 5520) & a Router (2811) in up of the switch. Besides this, I have run HSRP in Layer 3 Switches for redundancy.how will i stop intervlan routing between VLANS except 2, with ACL or any other process has?

The network design is a hub and spoke using a carrier provided MPLS network with a ASA 5520 at the hub that has a IPSec tunnel to another part of the company. This configuration has worked for sometime now (long before I came to the company a couple of months ago). The thing that does not make sense to me is that the those networks out on the spokes did not have a route to the inside interface network of the ASA. With the way this MPLS works, if a network is not in the MPLS network routing tables it will not pass that network. The network was not in the MPLS network, nor was it in any of our edge routers connecting to the MPLS.
These hub networks did have routes both in the MPLS and edge devices for the networks on the other side of the IPSec tunnel and have been reaching them for some time.So what I am trying to understand is how it is possible for these hosts that have no route to the ASA inside interface network, but do have routes to the remote networks, how are they able to successfully pass that traffic? There are no NAT devices between these WAN hosts and the ASA.

I have an interesting situation that I can't find a Cisco supported configuration for. My customer has a pair of 5520's setup in a failover pair and has two internet connections. The primary ISP has an Adtran router onsite, but the backup ISP did not provide a CPE router. I only found this out when I was onsite and needed to get it working otherwise I would have suggested purchasing another router.
I am trying to find out if this would be a supported configuration.
Here are the important parts for the way I got it working to fail over to the backup ISP and still provide outside access to critical applications. I substituted private IP addesses to protect the customer's identity.
interface GigabitEthernet0/0
nameif outside-primary
security-level 0
[Code].....
So as you can see the primary internet is all on the same IP subnet, but the backup NAT object is an IP address on a completely different subnet than the "outside-backup" interface. As a note, this is working perfectly and it is only a temporary situation, but if it would be supported I may end up using this configuration again as a perminent solution.

If I have an ASA 5520 with an INSIDE interface, a DMZ interface and a WAN interface what would be the best way to configure NAT? If I configure nat-control and a nat (inside) 1 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 this will configure everything to be NAT'd when passing from the INSIDE interface out.My question is what about the devices I want to access in the DMZ from the inside for management etc? I'm guessing the ASA isn't smart enough to realise you're accessing hosts in it's DMZ interface so do you have to configure a nat 0 rule for every subnet within the DMZ you want to access or is there an easier way to do it? It's worth noting that the same devices will be accessing the OUTSIDE network and the DMZ network from the INSIDE network.

We have an ASA 5520 which is in multiple context mode. We are trying to pass traffic from the outside interface to the dmz interface. We have a /27 public ip range. We need a small amount of those addresses to be in the DMZ for SIP servers specifically. The rest of the addresses are NAT'd to the inside interface. So i created the outside interface GigabitEthernet0/0 with 1.2.3.192/28 Inside Interface GigabitEthernet0/2 with 192.168.20.0/24 DMZ interface on GigabitEthernet0/2.1 with 1.2.3.208/29 So all i want to do is route traffic that comes in the outside interface and out to the DMZ interface for the 1.2.3.208/29 subnet. I set the gateway address as 1.2.3.214 which is the DMZ interface address on the ASA.

I have two ASA 5520 units, both running version 8.3(2) code. Among many other uses, they have an IPSec tunnel between them to link office 1 and office 3 together. Office 2 does exist, and is connected to a different port on the ASA in office 3; there is no IPSec involved with office 3. [code] SAM can ping JANE. JANE can ping SAM. The Office 3 ASA can ping FRED. FRED can ping the Office 3 ASA. JANE can ping FRED. FRED can not ping JANE, by design. When SAM pings FRED, FRED receives the packet, but NAT has not been applied to the source IP address (which is what I'm trying to do, and which does happen when JANE pings FRED), and therefore FRED does not have a route for the response.
As you can see, I want to NAT any traffic going towards office 2 to have as a souce address the interface address of the Office 3 ASA. This is because office 2 has a restricted routing configuration. Recall from above that when JANE pings FRED, this NAT happens and everything works. When SAM pings FRED, the NAT does not happen, as seen in debugs collected on FRED.

I have two virtual interfaces on my ASA 5520:
GigabitEthernet0/1.338 172.30.0.81/28
GigabitEthernet0/1.345 172.30.0.129/28
I have the security levels for both set to 50 and in the ASDM I have checked off "Enable traffic between two or more interfaces which are configured with same security levels"
But now the need has arisen that we allow each subnet to be routable to each other for SMTP traffic, how can I accomplish this?

I have ezVPN configured on an ASA 5520 for my server with 5505s as my clients at several remote sites. The tunnels come up no problem and I can hit everything I need to on both sides of the tunnel, but I'm not able to get to another remote network from a remote network. The traffic goes out the tunnel on the 5505 but on the 5520 all I see is a bunch of scrolling tear down messages.

We use Cisco Any connect with a Cisco ASA 5520 firewall. Today I changed the inside interface of the firewall's IP because i needed to do some inter vlan routing and needed to move the inside interface from the lan vlan to a routed port on our 3750.
Now people can vpn and authenticate to the MS radius inside but cannot access any network resources nor ping anything inside.

We have an ASA that has 3 IPSEC VPN tunnels and standard interenet trafic coming in on Int E0/0 that I need to have go out Int E0/1. E0/1 is directly connected to a Steelhead Riverbed 2020. The Traffic will need to come back out of the Steelhead Riverbed 2020 and into the ASA to Int E0/2. From here it needs to go out either Int E0/3 which is connected to a Catalyst 3560 Switch or back out Int E0/0 though one of the VPN tunnels. I attached a PDF with a diagram if that works.
The reason we are doing this is we have Riverbed's at all our locations and they need to talk to each other to optimize traffic. Is this routing possible any other way than PBR (Policy Based Routing)? I am of the understanding that PBR is not supported on the ASA or PIX.

I have a customer that wants to change their Nortel 5520 switches to a Cisco solution, and I wanted to ask what would be a good solution for this customer. presently they have 4 48 port PoE and 2 24 port PoE stackable 5520, and they are interested in redundant power supplies for the switches. I was thinking that the 3750 is good for this site.

I've just completed a port security project at a site on numerous Cisco switches and all works well, however they have 2 Nortel 5520 switches (which I left until the end) which they would like to lock down. I have logged a message on the Nortel forums and I have heard nothing for days. I just need to lock 2 ports down to the Mac address of 2 computers stopping any other computer being plugged in.

I am a complete novice at networking, but I was tasked to have an ASA 5520 do inter VLAN routing (since my shop doesn't have a layer 3 router). As a basic setup, I am trying to have three workstations on three different VLANs communicate with each other. I have a Cisco 3560X 48 port Ip base switch with v lan configured and ip routing. Ports 1 and 2 are in ether channel and routed ports to ASA and have their own network of 192.168.22.49/30. The ASA is configured with the same config for ports 1 and 2. The channel group ip address on the 3560X is 192.168.22.49/30 while the other end of the up link is the ASA and its configured with .50/30.
I have 6 v lans plus the one native v lan. They are all configured with ip addresses. Each V lan should be able to talk to one another other than DMZ v lan which is trunk and routed directly in the ASA. On the switch I can ping the IP address on the ASAs up link .50/30 but I cannot ping the ASA from any host on any of the V lans. My switch config file is posted below. The ASA seems to be able to ping any host in the VL ANS due to static routes that are in place. Why I'm not able to communicate to other v lans or even ping the ASA?

I've just started a CCNA course and my lack of knowledge has me a bit stuck. My network is comprised of Cisco components and I'm semi familiar with them just from reading and looking through options. I currently am using a Cisco ASA 5520 on my network and I am trying to join another network via one of the interfaces. My network is 192.168.0.0 255.255.0.0 and my inside interface is 192.168.1.1 255.255.0.0. I enabled a second interface using a static ip of 10.0.0.1 with a subnet of 255.255.255.128. Connected to that interface, I have a Fortigate firewall at 10.0.0.2 255.255.255.128. I can ping just fine from the Fortigate network to the 10.0.0.1 interface on the Cisco ASA 5520 network, but I can not ping the 10.0.0.1 interface (or anything past it) on the ASA 5520 from any computer on the Cisco network. I've read that ACL's and NAT have to be done as well as enabling traffic between interfaces with the same security levels. (both interfaces have security levels of 100 and the option is checked to allow traffic).
Note: each network has it's own internet connection. The connection is to share information on servers on both networks with each other.

Currently, we have a Cisco router (28xx), ASA 5520, and a core switch 4500. We have different vlans. We also have Auto QoS running for our Cisco IP Phones. My manager just asked me to see if I can either reserve some certain bandwidth for one vlan, or give that vlan higher priority on internet traffic than the others.
1.) Anyway we can reserve some more bandwidth for one vlan than other vlans?
2.) If #1 cannot be done, how can we provide higher priority on the internet traffic to one vlan than the others?
3.) Is #1 or #2 the same config? If not, which one would be easier (without changing our current QoS settings)?
4.) If 1 or 2 can be done, which device I should config the settings on?
5.) This question may be duplicate, but do we need to reset our current QoS to achieve the goal?

I have an ASA that houses 11 VLANs, and I am trying to add a 12th.One of the VLANs is for PCs that have internet only access. The new VLAN will be similar, but for multifunction printers only.VLAN 99 is for internet only and works fine, I can ping the gateway of 10.99.3.33 from any PC in that VLAN.I am creating VLAN 98, modeling it after VLAN 99, and I cannot get a PC in the vlan to ping the gateway of10.98.3.17.Both switch and ASA show the new VLAN 98 as UP, switchport is UP/UP.I have deleted and recreated VLAN 98 a few times, but I cannot get a PC VLAN 98 connectivity.Once it is working on the core switch, I will add it to the trunk to the IDS switches. VTP is not in use, everything is manual. [code]

I'll have to replace an old WS-C3550-24. Reasons for this: EOL/EOS & we'll need a NAT capable device...
As I understood, the only L3 catalyst that is able to perform NAT is a 6500? Is that correct? If the above is correct, it seems I can only replace the setup by using a router/ASA with a L2 switch. A router with high throughput (+/- 300Mbps) is hard to find, especially as NAT will require CPU resources...
So, my best (affordable price) solution is getting an ASA5520 (450Mbps FW throughput) and a L2 switch?

I am desperate to make some kind of translation which convert an outside IP Address of our web server to its inside ip address so that requests can be routed internally to the server.
This is what we have: A wireless network with an SSID to serve visitors. We also have an in-house web server which can be accessed internally and externally. We have a ASA 5520 that protects the internal network, including the Web server, and also routes all traffic from the all visitors connected to the public SSID to the outside. The DHCP server for the wireless network for visitors is configured to give the 8.8.8.8 as dns server. The problem with that is that the www.ourwebserver.com is resolved by Google's dns server to the public IP Address of our web server! The traffic then is sent to the outside interface of the ASA 5520. The visitor who wants to access our web server cannot connect!
How can I configure the ASA to route that traffic to our web server with the public ip address to the inside ip address of the web server?

I'm attempting to configure two ASA 5520 for active/standby failover. When I enter the “failover” command to enable the config on the primary ASA, the entire routing table disappears. There is no routing process running, only static routes are configured.
Is this an expected behavior of the failover process and if so, how long should I wait for the routes to come back?

How to configure traffic flow between computers inside VLANs and a routed port? Here is the setup details:
1. Switch 3750-X
2. VLAN 100 - ( SVI IP address 192.168.100.1 /24)
3. VLAN 200 - ( SVI IP address 192.168.200.1 /24)
4. routed port gi1/0/48 (IP address 192.168.150.1 /24). Note: this port is directly connected to a firewall ASA 5520 port IP 192.168.150.100 /24
Ip routing is enabled on the switch and inter vlan traffic is flowing ok. I can ping the routed port gi1/0/48 from any computer connected in the VLAN 100 or 200. For example computer with IP 192.168.100.25 can ping the routed port 192.168.150.1. Switch can ping firewall port 192.168.150.100 and the 'sh ip route' command shows the network 192.168.150.0 /24 as directly connected network.
any computer in the two VLANs CANNOT ping firewall ASA port 192.168.150.100 Is it because inter VLAN routing does not work with a routed port on L3 switch? I looked up fallback bridging, but it is meant for non IP traffic. The goal is I am trying to set the ASA port as an internet gateway for VLANs.

We have 3 sites, with a Cisco ASA 5520 at each location.
HQ (Headquarters) internal network: 172.16.110.0/24,
DR (Disaster Recovery) internal network: 172.16.120.0/24
BO (Branch Office) internal network: 172.16.150.0/24
HQ and DR have a 100Mbps permanent MPLS link between each other.Branch Office has a Site 2 Site VPN connection to HQ. If it fails, it establishes a Site 2 Site VPN connection to DR. This works perfectly. Now the routing issue... There is no route to the BO in the routing table at HQ/DR. The default gateway is used to reach the BO and that works for HQ when the VPN is between HQ/BO. If the VPN fails over to DR/BO, HQ can't reach BO anymore.I need to have some kind of conditional route injection from the ASA where the VPN is established. I was considering a tracked static route, but I was wondering if the S2S VPN itself has a functionality to do so. I thought the Reverse Route Injection was it but it's enabled on our crypto map and doesn't seem to work...

After having a hard time getting the VPN back to default, I logged into the ASDM and reset to factory defaults. After it reset, I logged in via the management port and configured everything to work. When I clicked on "apply", it gave an error saying that the inside interfaces, g0/1, IP address is on the same network as the management interface. When the ASA restarted, I am now unable to get into the unit via the management port or the inside interface.
I had set the management port to 10.0.1.254. WHen I connect an ethernet cable to it and place my mac on the the same network, I can ping the management interface, however I cannot SSH, Telnet or ASDM into it.
Here is the big problem, I don't have a console/rollover cable to connect to the console interface. Is there another way I can default the box? Maybe via the reset button on the back somehow? Or, is there a way to figure out the ip address of the inside interface? I'm assuming, since it did not take the IP I set, that it defaults to something right?
