Configuring Digital Fax To Network Folder Located On A Home Media Server?

Feb 13, 2012

I am having difficulty getting my HP Officejet Pro 8500(A910) configured to save digital faxes to my Iomega 2TB Home Media Sever (cloud edition). My home network is setup through a Linksys E4200.I was able to successfully configure it to save to a folder on my PC, but I do not want to leave it running 24/7.I believe the breakdown is in the Authentication part of the setup... It asks for the Windows username and password, which works fine for the PC setup but not for anywhere else. Do I use the UN & PW for the home media server if I'm saving to one of its folders? If so, how do I correctly type the path? It is communicating with the folder and leaving an alphanumeric file saved inside the folder when I use the 'save and test' option, but it breaks down from there.

Reason: Kids share DSL and Parents have the cable all to themselves. We are currently wanting to setup a media server where both networks would have access to a database of media files. It would be in the middle of the house and each network would connect to it wirelesslyI guess first off, is this possible

Linksys Wireless Router :: E4200 Media Server Ignores Folder Hierarchy?

Jan 5, 2012

I have a 1TB drive attached to my E4200 that contains several videos sorted in a folder hierarchy, like this (these are just examples):

TV Shows
Supernatural
01. Episode 1.mp4

[Code]....

As you can see, all of my videos are in a carefully constructed heirarchy.  This works with my old media server (Rivet for Mac).  On the E4200, however, all of these MP4 files are merged together.  My Xbox shows folders like "Albums" and "By Date", but these don't really mean anything -- all of my videos are jumbled into these folders and there's no way I can find anything.

Here's how the media server is configured:

If I can't find a solution, than the media server feature of this router is absolutely useless to me.

Home Network :: Switch Need To Be Located Where Patch Panel Is

Sep 18, 2011

I am renovation my own house, and I have started to hard wire for the network/s, but I am also trying to incorporate so much more than any previous “wireless” setup I have had, well I am a bit confused to say the least.I would like to set up a home network and media server system which includes:Internet browsing (multiple rooms and wireless) File sharing, printer sharing, scanner etc Music/Video sharing/streaming, TV etc.I have started wiring (we are renovating) with Cat5e, and have just replaced the old POTS (telephone) wiring with Cat5e and taken the individual telephone wires (including the incoming telephone cable) back to one central connection unit in a network patch panel. This has improved the speed of my DSL download connection speed from 1.2mbs to 6.2mbs. unreal!, so that did get me a bit fired up!I am currently wiring data points (Cat5es from each room) back to the same panel, but to be honest I am not really sure where to go from there! Also, I have wired Sat cables back to this point ready to be connected to sat TV (dish) in case if we get it. This patch panel is in a small passageway that goes through to the garage from the house. It is conveniently located next to the mains board which I have just replaced. My original idea was to put any extra needed equipment in the same location, but looking at it, I think that I may have to think again, for there is little room. I have found a small alcove in the upstairs games room which has a shelf, and which could take any hardware, also it will be dust free (unlike the place leading to the garage). I can run as many cables as needed from this location to the patch panel, but obviously I would like to know how many, as I am not familiar with networking on this scale, my only other experience being wireless setups. For example, would the switch need to be located where the patch panel is, or else can it be on the shelf with the other stuff? (away from the panel), and the existing D-link 4 port router?? is this no longer required?Im presuming i will need an old PC or some sort of media storage device here too... no ideas with this either. Have tried asking three different computer stores, got three different answers...?!

Have I dropped a clanger wiring to the passageway, when infact any server/switch or whatever wont be in the same location? Also, I am planning on getting a MAC book, and would like to use this on the system sometimes (might not be relevant), just thought to mention. And, I was thinking of trying Linux, as I am fed up with all the windows problems. But not sure if that is a good idea either. We have TVs in the (when its finished) media room, also three other areas, which I would like to get connected so that they will be able to get either TV or watch a film from storage wow this is getting complicated and if it matters I do have a PS3, which we only really bought to use as a TV storage system/recorder.

Home Network :: Get The Most Out Of New 100mbps Virgin Media?

May 11, 2012

Virgin Media just upgraded my broadband to 100mbps. My main PC is in a place where unfortunately I cannot hard wire it to ethernet, and also the wifi signal is a bit rubbish - therefore I have been using D-Link Powerline AV Homeplugs DHP-307 200Mbps (N.B. I am fully aware that 200mbps doesn't really mean that through homeplugs, please read on)

Ages ago when my I first set this up my connection speed from Virgin Media was 50mbps and, after installing, I tested it a few times and got about 45mbps, which I was happy with.

However, due to the upgrade I thought I would test it again, and now I'm only gettin about 20-25Mbps. I did some diagnistic checks as follows:

A laptop plugged directly into my router via ethernet got 97 Mbps My laptop sitting next to my PC connected via wifi got 54 Mbps My PC connected via wifi with the ethernet/homeplug disconnected got 26 Mbps (I think my wireless card in the PC and the aeriel are both a bit rubbish though anyway)My PC connected via ethernet homeplug with no wifi got 23 Mbps

What I don't understand is:

1 - In the configuration utility for the homeplugs it says that the link speed for this plug is 96 Mbps, so how come that's not coming through?

2 - Why would it have one time been higher and now not? If it wasn't for point 1 above I might put it down to interference in the elecrical circuits, but I thought that's what the link speed would be showing me

I guess the best option would be to try and get VM to install a proper ethernet port in my study, however I can't imagine how they would do this without running cables through the house, which I don't want, so I'm trying to exhaust other options. I'm happy to ditch the homeplugs if there is something better.

Linksys Wireless Router :: E3000 Media Server Not Seen By Windows Media Player?

Apr 18, 2012

I've enabled the Media Server on my E3000 router.  My PS3 can see the server and play media from it by my PCs can't!

I'm using Windows Media Player v 12.0 on Windows 7 and some older version on Windows XP and it's my understanding that the Media Server should appear under the "Other Libraries" section but it does not.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there a bug in the E3000 firmware (I have the latest as of this date) or is the Media Server simply not compatible with Windows Media Player? compatible media player for Windows 7?

I did read a post about a firmware upgrade on the 4200 that broke the media player, but I don't know if such a problem exists for the E3000.

Home Network / Configuring Internet Sharing

Jan 14, 2013

I have a home wi-fi network that connects through a router/modem to the Internet. There are three up-to-date Windows Vista (Home edition, I think) laptops on the network all of which connect wirelessly to the router/modem. The network is password protected (for security purposes I turn off network discovery. And I don't use file sharing between the laptops). In other words, I have three laptops connected to a common wireless Internet connection (the router/modem). I also have a desktop computer (that I use for projects and gaming), but I don't have a wireless network adapter nor a long enough ethernet cable to connect to the router. I don't have any technical problems connecting to the Internet using a crossover ethernet cable. It's just impractical as I have to dismantle the whole desktop computer system (printer, monitor, scanner, etc etc) and carry it to a different room within cable distance of the router every time I need to update the software or activate a new application.

Home Network :: Playing MPEG-2 File In Webpage From Home Server?

The web server is working great; I can get to my web pages from outside of my home by going to http://MyIpAddress/Anyway, the problem is with the Windows Media Player plugin I'm using. I want to embed 6GB MPEG-2 videos into my web pages. I have some videos on my PC and I want to be able to watch them remotely by connecting into my web page. It works fine when I'm at home; other PCs can connect and play the videos no problem. The problem is when I'm at work. When I'm at work, I go to my web page (via my IP address in a web browser) and the Media Player plugin says "Connecting" for a minute, then it says Ready, but the video will not play. I tried using a smaller, AVI file (680 MB) instead to see if the problem was streaming such a large file, but the video still would not play.Do I need to foward more ports on my router so that Windows Media Player can connect back and get the information it needs?

Setting Up A DNS Server On Home Network

Jan 18, 2011

I have a small home network. My goal is to use Windows Server 2003 R2 to setup a DNS Server that can create a few simple names for some devices on my LAN, such as my printer. My DNS server will forward other inquiries (like google.com) to OpenDNS. Additionally, I don't want to setup a domain controller for my network. I wish to continue using workgroups, how to setup a Windows DNS Server on a workgroup. My biggest confusion is the FQDN of my name server. By default, it's setup as "server.", where 'server' is the name of my Windows Server 2003 machine. My workgroup is named 'Home'. So I tried 'server.home', but this does not resolve. What DNS suffix do my other machines on the network use by default? Is my domain name on the network really my workgroup name? Another thing I want to avoid is configuring a DNS Suffix for every single client machine on my network in their NIC properties for IPv4. I have a D-Link router, and if I do an "ipconfig /all" on my machine, I see that my DNS suffix is 'router', which is the name of my D-Link router. I try setting my DNS Server FQDN as 'server.router' and that doesn't work either, so I'm out of ideas.
