Router only tells me when someone is on and can track total network traffic usage not individual hardware.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm setting up a small network (one server, two clients) to create photo sales kiosks at an upcoming outdoor event. I will need internet access for processing credit card payments but there won't be any wi-fi or ethernet internet access on the site so I'll need to utilize my iPhone's 3G connection. I recently installed "MyWi" app which can tether the 3G and even create a personal wi-fi hotspot but unfortunately it only works in ad-hoc mode, not infrastructure.So far, the wired LAN is working great on my three Macbooks, using a Linksys (DD-WRT) router. Also, the wi-fi hotspot is working great to provide internet to all the computers. The problem, of course, is that I can't have both connected at the same time or else everything breaks. I've tried doing an iPhone-USB-Macbook tether and then sharing the connection via ethernet but the internet doesn't get through the router (because I don't have a clue of how to configure the router for this). I've also tried setting my router (DD-WRT) to do a client-bridge of the iPhone ad-hoc wi-fi, but again, it's way over my head and didn't work.

I am able to setup a vip on ace using routing mode on ACE,as the servers need to see the client ip ,so we are not performing SNAT,this part is working fine.
when a request comes from the client ,it goes to the vip and to one of the backend servers ,and the request will be forwaded back to the ace ,as the default gateway on the servers is pointing to the server vlan on ace.
but if the transaction from the servers need to go to the visa card transaction servers ,how can we acheive this ,and after fetching the data from visa servers,does the reply will be fwd to the ACE or ASAs directly.

The scenario is that currently one of the client has a firewall Tie ring T1 internet facing and T2 internal which has multiple DMZ connected.
T2 firewall has a DMZ switch connected which has a router which connects to MPLS cloud to different site across the country. (around 10 sites) all static routing.
Now the client is thinking to deploy wireless at all 10 sites using H-REAP. The issue is that client has only one WLC and they are not willing to buy other as i was thinking to deploy two WLC one for corporate and one for guest users. (one in internal network and on in DMZ)
Now my question is as follow.
1- Keeping in mind that there is only one WLC where should i physically put it?
2- How guest users will work ? How the authentication will be done?
3-There are 8 SFP ports in WLC how physical topology will look like?
4-How many Vlans i have to make for wirless users will that be 10? (1 at each site) ?
my last question is that how these ports work on WLC are they just like switch e.g one port can be assigned to different vlan....just confuse about interfaces and vlans on WLC (interfaces concept)
I'm involved in setting up a new office for a business that's just starting out. I have some computer experience but not a whole lot in networking and security. We just have 3 people that will be working in the office and we need a way to store/backup/share files on the network as well as a way to access them remotely if need be. Our internet service is going to be providing us with a static IP. I was thinking that we could use an NAS with RAID 1 attached to the router, which is in turn connected to the cable modem, but I'm not sure if this is secure. Do we need some type of hardware firewall in between the cable modem and the router to protect us from the outside?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Time Warner Cable business class service with no static IP, with a wireless modem which is plugged to a CAT5 distribution panel. On the jacks (2 other rooms on the house) I have a Linksys E3000 and a Linksys Valet router for signal boost and gadgets usage (TV, cameras, etc).The main router (TWC) has it's own external IP which TWC assigns to me and internally distributes via DHCP the range 192.168.0.x. With that said:
- The E3000 has a 192.168.0.6 IP -- this is fixed setup on the TWC router (ubee brand) by MAC address
- The Valet has a 192.168.0.7 IP -- this is fixed setup on the TWC router (ubee brand) by MAC address
- The main router has the 192.168.0.1 as the gateway and web-interface
Whenever I connect something to the E3000, it is distributing the 192.168.1.x range and the valet 192.168.2.x range.That works perfectly for my home based business until I decided to use more stuff on the network such as a IP printer, IP cameras, etc.
- The IP cameras are connected to the E3000 due to signal strength and I have manually assigned them the 192.168.1.15 and 192.168.1.16 IPs and ports 9001 and 9002.
- The printer is connected to the E3000 and I have manually assigned the IP 192.168.1.30.
Issue 1: Port forwarding On the main router (TWC - UBEE) I have tried to setup a port forwarding by informing the Local IP as 192.168.0.6 (E3000 IP), Internal Port 0, Public Interface IP (0.0.0.0), Ext Start Port 9001, Ext End Port 9001, Protocol - Both, Enabled Yes. On the E3000 I did the same config (screen shot attached e3000.png).This is not working properly. I can't get into the camera.
Issue 2: Printer/ The printer is only accessible if I connect to the E3000 (because it is on the 192.168.1.x network)
Issue 3: How to configure all the devices on the same subnet? If I want everyone to be on the 192.168.0.x network, how to configure properly the E3000 and the Valet? I have tried to force them into the same network but it would not work properly. It would not get an IP from the UBEE router (main).
I just took a position and never had to work with networks that much before. Our lan is very slow and trying to figure out why. We have verizon business class 3 t1 lines dedicated 4 M. When I do a speed test we get about 4.05 average and 4.23 down. We have 11 computers on the network connected to a Dell power connect 2716. We have Two network printers and that is it. We are having problems with it being very slow when connecting to a share on the server or using RDP.

First a little history, I have an electronics degree and a certificate in computer technology, so computers are not something new to me, however networking IS.I have a VERY LIMITED budget to work with, which I'm sure is not unheard of before, with the following equipment already available:
1 MFP currently on lease connected via network
3 totally junk PCs running 3 different versions of Windows from XP to 7
A DSL internet connection
A wireless router
A wired 8 port switch
What I would like to do is begin with a basic server, 7 clients, shared internet on all machines (including external via login), An MFP, at least 1 NAS for data storage, 1 NAS for backup of all drives.
He currently has 1 server, and 11 workstations, he also has a network switch that we will be replacing.We have picked out a Dell server, running Windows Server 2008 R2 that will be used as the main file server, as well as the domain controller. Where I seem to be confused is on setting up the networking component, particularly how the machines will get IP addresses. As mentioned, I will be purchasing a new Ethernet switch, in order to get the fastest LAN speed possible; I have selected the Dell PowerConnect 2816, which is a 10/100/1000Mbs switch. My question is, will I be letting the switch handle the IP's/DHCP or would I be better off, setting up the server for DHCP? If so, do I also setup the server as the DNS server? From what I am reading online using the server as the DHCP/DNS server gives us more management capabilities and is more "secure". As a test, I loaded Windows Server 2008 R2 on a home machine and played around with this. I got a bit lost on the DHCP and DNS setup and it appears that one needs a Static IP from your ISP in order to setup your serve as the DHCP/DNS server for the domain. Is this correct? I haven't been to his office yet to check out all the existing equipment, is it safe to assume that his ISP provides a router or whatever is needed to feed the switch?

The router is configured with bgp for 2 providers and local network is /24 rout able network (92.224.1.0/24). I think bgp is configured correctly because I can ping any ip from the router (92.224.1.1), for example I can ping 8.8.8.8.
The problem is that I can not ping anything from the local network, from example I can not ping 8.8.8.8 (Google dns) from 92.224.1.2.
92.224.1.2 has as default gw 92.224.1.1.
92.224.1.2 -> 92.224.1.1 -> BGP 2 ISP's
What are the best network engineering practises for a small/medium sized office?Currently I have set it up like this:The top floor has all the sales people, each desk has a hub underneath which connects all computers at that desk together, and the hum is connected to a switch under the floor. There are about about 8 desks each with about 4 computers, so 8 hubs.They all go into a 10/100 switch, which is then connected to an 1gb switch on the bottom floor via a 1gb port on the top floor switch, via a cat6 cable.We then have internet > modem > router > the 1gb switch. Our main server is also connected to that switch along with all the computers for the ground floor, except these computers have 1gb switches under the desks instead of hubs. The main server is the DHCP, DC, DNS and file server. We have also setup another server which acts as a backup DC and is also a DNS server.Is there anything wrong with this configuration? We have been having problems with the router losing connection to the internet and warnings on the main DNS server.
View 6 Replies View Related3 Computers 2 using vista - 1 using XP. Printer is a HP 2727nf. Will work for a couple of jobs then receives an error code and will not print anymore for any computer. Only a hard reset of turning the printer off and clearing out the queue will print the job that was getting stuck. Wondering if anything can be done so error code won't show up and we can get this printer to run smooth again. PS we have another HP printer that works fine on the network.

Cisco recommends the RV220 as the entry point Firewall/Router/Wireless and researching there are apparently some good and bad sides of having everything all in one unit depending on who you ask. The other option would be to get a dedicated Firewall/Router and then run the wireless on a seperate device(vlan). I'm fine with either solution but my main concern is performance on the physical connections as well as reliability with the wireless having good range and not dropping or having to reboot the router continuously. Behind the router/firewall I will purchase one of the Cisco 24-port gig switches for physical connections through the office. How to get for the router/firewall/wireless setup? Budget is not a problem although I don't want to pay for something that is overkill for 10-15 wired workstations and 5-10 wireless including a guest wireless.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI would like to setup a simple VPN on a small network, nothing special, just to provide access to some simple resources on the network from anywhere. Since I'm not a Cisco expert, I was advised to user a 861 router, but I just can't seem to get the VPN working on this device.
I've placed the router behind a modem and did some basic configuration. Hosts who are connected to the modem (on the Vlan side) can access the internet and can setup a VPN connection to the router. A VPN connection from inside the network is worthless, but I just can't get the VPN working on the FastEthernet4 connection.
Any VPN config for a 861 router for this situation? Or how to configure this device as a VPN server?
My office just moved to a bigger location, and we are having trouble with network connectivity.
Current layout: Modem --- Wired-----> 2wire 5012NV ------wired/wireless----> PCs
The 2wire is at one end of the office, and PCs at the other end experience poor wireless connectivity.I'm thinking of using a spare WRT54G2 in "bridged" mode, to extend the Ethernet, and wireless of the main router.
For wired bridging, I understand that that the WRT54G2 will do, is act as a "port multipler", where 1 port from the 2wire can be multiplied into 4. I also want the wrt54g2's wireless to extend the Ethernet connection (not extend the wireless connection).
