My desktop with Windows Vista is connected to the modem with a standard ethernet cord, and when I try to plug the same cord into my laptop I don't get any internet access. My laptop is running Windows 7. I have tried powering the modem off for 15 seconds multiple times, but to no avail. I am just trying to make this connection work until I purchase a router.

When I connected it to my desktop, the orange led on ethernet port do not light up and the desktop is unable to detect the ethernet cable and hence the internet connection. On the router, a light of ethernet keeps on blinking every 1 second. I was worried whether my ethernet port got fried. So i inserted another ethernet cable, but then the ethernet orange light came and the pc detedted the connection. Therefore I thought the cable might be faulty. Therefore I connected my laptop with that 25m cable. But my laptop detected it and showed the internet connection. But now when i again connect the cable to my desktop, there's no light and the pc does not detect it. However, if i connect the 25m cable to my desktop then during boot the ethernet light on router is stable just as when it is normally connected to the internet. But when i go into windows it starts blinking every 1 second.

I have a printer connected to another computer (Win XP) and it wasn't showing up on the network so I followed some installation process to install a network driver or something. Now the printer is working fine. BUT... Now that computer is having internet problems. It connects to the internet fine but some programs say it doesn't. Like Microsoft Outlook. A message always shows up saying "Must work offline" or something. And I cant listen to some things on the internet because a message comes up saying you must connect to the internet.

I've had trouble connecting to my own internet and have no wireless. I'm using my neighbor's wireless and it's really slowing her's down. I've tried restarting my laptop (it usually works) and then reinstalled the device under "device manager". It's not the cord, I've checked with my neighbor's laptop and it works fine.I use a Sony Vaio VGN-NS140E with Windows Vista SP2.

My housemate just got a second hand laptop which i restored to factory settings for him. the computer is running windows vista and everything is working fine, however the computer will connect to the wireless network but wont get any internet. the network itself is fine as we already have 3 computers connected to the internet with no problems.

I also have two laptops connected to the same router. The laptops connect to the internet fine but the desktop doesn't. I connected to the internet fine (satellite) before I moved but won't connect now. Norton 360 can update automatically and Skype connects but I can't open web pages. I am trying to bridge internet connection received from my laptop to my desktop with an ethernet cable. Both machines are running win 7.When I try to connect to my local area connection on the desktop most of the time it fails and I'm left with 'Unidentified network' and no internet connection. My wireless router is downstairs in the living room and my desktop PC is upstairs in the bedroom. Theoretically, My PC's wireless card should be able to reach the router perfectly, being as I have several other PC's in the house that I use from my bedroom and the connection is 'Very Good' to 'Excellent'. Although with this new computer the connection's strength is very weak and it's so slow using the internet or trying to download things. It's internet is almost unusable. I've tried swapping the wireless card, but to avail. The connection is still awful.
Or of a way to boost the signal of my wireless card?
I have a toshiba laptop with windows 7 installed(IE 9)and it connects to my wireless modem just fine i have 2 othe home puters that is networked so that i can access both on my laptop. the problem i have is this i have to take my laptop with me to work and hook up to customers modem no problems there. when i get home and reconnect to my wireless modem i have no problems accessing then internet. but for some reason i am not able to access the other 2 puters that was networked previously. I have tried to repeat the netork setup with no luck the only way i can get my network setup the way it was before i have to do a system restore.

Modem seems to handshake correctly with the ISP, password is accepted, then I get the normal message "Registering the Computer on the Network". This never goes away ( it should in a few seconds) and the machine freezes with no cursor/mouse movement or keyboard. Only way to get out of this is to hold the power button until computer powers down. Reloaded the modem driver. Tried an external USB modem and the same thing happens. Used another computer of the same make and model and it works fine on the same phone line/ISP.

At the beginning of the year, my parents bought me an extremely long ethernet cable ( about 15 feet I'm guessing). I have been using this ethernet cord with no problems up until now. I find it difficult to maintain the long cord as it gets tangled everywhere and I switch it between my laptop and my xbox (I can't get a switch to work). View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I have a Westell 7500 Modem/Router with Century Link DSL. I've been running a couple of laptops and my wifi enabled TV on the wireless. A few days ago I got a new desktop PC (Windows 7) and plugged the ethernet cable into it. Everything was great but the wireless was a bit slow for the TV so I plugged that in with an ethernet cable too. No problems for a few days. Today, we had a power blip and everything reset and I noticed that the internet light on the modem was solid red and I couldn't access the internet on any machine (ethernet or wifi). I called the ISP who said there was an outage in the area. A few hours later, solid green light on the modem BUT the TV (ethernet connected), my iphone, and my laptops could NOT connect, despite the network showing up with a full signal. Oddly, my new PC, connected via ethernet was fine so I played some Diablo (side note). Here's the deal: the new PC connects just fine but nothing else will. If I unplug the ethernet cable to the PC or disable the LAN connection, the red internet light appears on the modem. It seems as though the PC has hijacked the modem in some way. Even the TV won't connect with the ethernet cable. The only way the internet works now is if the modem is connected to the new PC. I've done all the resents - unplugged the modem and let it sit for 10-15 minutes, accessed the router settings, etc etc. Why would this start happening now after everything was working well for several days and how do I fix it? I need the wifi connection! Update: Plugged my Macbook Pro into the ethernet cable (took it out of new PC) and it works.

This has only occurred over the last 24 hours and is frustrating. I've read some other recent posts and have gone back and done the System Restore to before the installation of Windows Updates a day or so ago and that has worked twice today. But I'm not a PC expert and I would like to know how I could resolve this issue permanently without having to undo the updates with System Restore every time I power up and log in. Daughter is at college with brand new Vostro 3450. Was working on school network during summer but drops the connection multiple times during the day. She runs the Troubleshooting which then allows her to connect and 30 minutes later the connection is dropped again. The laptop works fine when connected to the internet via the ethernet cable. Here is what has been done by the IT support at the school.
1 - Deleted the Intel wireless utility as they thought it was "fighting" with the Windows software for control over the wireless.
2 - Increased the power for the wireless card to "high performance".
3 - Reinstalled Windows 7 to eliminate that there is a software issue.
4 - Replaced the Intel Wireless Card with new part sent by Dell.
Now the IT supports recommendation is to "get a new system" and that perhaps the Vostro's wireless card is "not compatible with their network". For Dell computers they sell the Latitude to the students.
My daugther likes the Vostro. She doesn't want to give it up. Wants the system to work. She had the laptop during the summer session and had problems with connection. The Windows software was reinstalled thinking there was a virus (although no evidence of one) and then she had no connection problems for the whole summer. She came home for 2 weeks and returned back to school and then the system would not work again.
I don't know what to do. Can I buy a USB wireless adapter for her to temporarily use until I can figure out how to fix this problem. Personally, I think there is a design flaw with the vostro.
