View 5 Replies View RelatedI share an unsecured network with my next door neighbor. The Norton Antivirus trial ran out on my new Sony VAIO laptop. Immediately after, it stopped connecting to our network (and any other unsecured network). I've tried turning off Windows Firewall, turning off Windows Defender, did a system restore, uninstalled Norton, used the Norton removal tool, installed and uninstalled another antivirus program (the one that Google Apps recommends... starts with an I), verified the wireless switch is turned on, rebooted my computer, did every update for both Windows and VAIO, booted in safe mode w/ networking, created a new profile... nothing is working!!!!

However, whenever I go in a coffee shop or anywhere else that has a unsecured network for customers, it won't connect, no matter how strong the signal is.
Unable to connect to a unsecured wireless network that ive been connecting to for the last year for about a week today i was able to connect when first starting my laptop but after shutdown and restarting an hour later same problem odd thing i find is there are two other laptops in my home that have no problem connecting to this network at anytime i have very little knowledge of laptops or wireless networks.

View 10 Replies View Relatedwe were having problems with our netgear router (DGN1000) mainly with connection when online gaming with PS3, generally poor connection - so purchased a TP-Link router (TD-W8960N). We could usually access the netgear wirelessly on our laptops Dell and Acer Aspire 4820T (both Windows 7) without any problems and were still doing so last night. However hubby attempted to install the new router last night and all seemed to go fine but after installing we couldn't connect to the wireless network through laptops, iphone ps3 etc - even though we could see the network with excellent strength, after hours of trying called TP-Link they went through everything they could think of and still no joy. Gave up in the end and went to reinstall the netgear Router and now we have the same problem with this router, even though earlier in the night it wasn't a problem - we deleted the previous networks so there was nothing stored in memory & tried everything we can think of (although neither of us are brilliant with IT we do usually get by).We even set up an unsecured wireless network (on both routers) and still couldn't connect .

The router is a Sagem provided by my ISP (Sky). The wireless connection works fine on my MacBook, and various other devices connect no problem with the security key.
However, his laptop (Windows Vista) will not connect wirelessly. After entering the password, it says it can't connect because it 'times out' (we are obviously entering the password immediately with no delay). It connects fine with an ethernet cable. It will also connect to an unsecured wireless network we can pick up.
The security setup is WPA-PSK with TKIP encryption, and we've made sure he is using these settings.
If it might be important, he has just moved here, and previously his laptop was connected to another Sky router with no problems.
I tried to set up an ad hoc access point on my laptop, but it won't connect to the network I made. I'm using xp sp3.

This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters.I have an iphone, 3 ipads, one windows 7 pc and a mac connected to the network with no problems. The password provided by the ISP is 25 characters (letters and numbers). I would hate to have to change the password on all my devices for one Windows XP laptop. I've called Netgear who make the wireless router and they said the only solution was to change the password for all devices.

I'm not sure why the guest net work is unsecured. I would have thought that would not be an option but it is unsecured. How to secure the guest network [2.4 GHz]? Also when I view the guest list some devices stay displayed whether they are in the vicinity or even turned off. That adds to my paranoia with the guest network being unsecured. I also can't edit the screen names to know who the device belongs to like is available in "my devices", forcing me to keep a MAC address list.

I believe it is a Netgear but I can get the specifics if necessary. Either way I have security set up on it so you need a password to access. Also I have it setup so I must add each device to the accepted list before connecting. I have successfully connected 3 iphones, an ipad, a Samsung tablet, an Xbox, and at one time an HP Mini laptop.
However, for some reason I can no longer connect the HP Mini to the network. In every try I receive a message that says "Windows was unable to connect to "name of my router"". I definitely remember being connected to this router at one time in the past so I have no clue what changed. Also I can currently connect the HP Mini to the wireless router at work.The interesting thing I find is that I cannot identify the MAC address in the list of devices on my router. I run an ipconfig to identify the MAC address for the HP Mini and then try to manually enter it into the router with no success.A couple of other information points, I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on the HP Mini and the Wireless card is a Broadcom 43224AG 802.11 a/b/g
my hp laptop suddenly will not connect to our wireless router. It was fine but now it just stopped connecting. It says wireless connections are available but will not connect to ours.
