How To Deploy Large Wireless Network
Apr 11, 2013
deploying a large wireless network (about 14 access points) spread across 9 buildings that are in relative close proximity to each other. I have included a picture with a rough scale (it's editable, so feel free to play around with it). Anyways, here is the basic idea. I do basic IT consulting for small businesses and some friends of mine work for an apartment complex in my local area. They came to me with this idea of deploying a wireless network on the campus to provide their tenants with "free" basic wireless internet. Basic meaning, not intended to be a replacement for a private connection. But suitable for basic web browsing, school work (I live in a university town), and email. So I got to scratching my head and quickly realized that I need to dome some learning and refresh on my skills.

I am trying to set up a network that is over a larger area than I am use to. I have experience setting up wired networks for small and medium sized businesses, as well as setting up multiple access points to cover a larger area. My goal is to set up a work site trailer to provide wireless coverage for a farmer's field. The largest distance I am dealing with is a half a mile. Depending on the field the direction the signal ranges from 90 to 180 degrees. My problem is my lack of experience with the hardware to accomplish this. I am trying to figure out what is the easiest cheapest and most reliable way to accomplish this. Currently my plan is to use a Cisco WAP4410N access point and hooking it up to multiple high gain unidirectional antennas. Is there a reliable website out there to accomplish this without wasting money on trial and error? I don't like starting a project before can this be accomplished? What should I be looking for in an antenna? How many degrees offset should they be? What kind of wire should I be running from the antenna to the access point?

I've got a home network running on a Linksys WRT150-N router. The network consists of 2 desktops running Windows XP SP3, and a laptop running Windows 7. I am able to transfer various files without a problem between and among all machines, EXCEPT when those files are beyond a certain size (less than 1 MB or so transfers fine). Most of my photos are in the 2 MB - 3 MB range, so I have to run around like an idiot with a thumb drive to transfer them.
Is there anything I can adjust on my router or for my network settings that will allow me to share larger files?
Additional Details The error message I get is different for Windows 7 or XP. On the remote XP machine, it says "Cannot copy filename: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected, and that the file is not currently in use." Obviously, none of those conditions is true.
More random symptoms:
It seems that the problem is limited to JPG files, and appears to be affecting only the vast repository where I keep all my photos. I've got all my photos stored in a main directory, then in sub-directories by Year, then by Date. e.g. PHOTOS 2011 2011_12_25
Moreover, this problem does NOT appear to have much to do with file size. Some large files will copy, while others will not.
It's very random. Some sub-folders are filled with readable pictures, while others are unreadable. But this follows no discernible pattern based on file date -- and they were all taken with the same camera. Smaller files seem to always be readable, even when larger ones in the same directory are.

Im trying to rebuilt my parents home network. This is the general layout of what Im trying to go for when everyting is said and done.
modem---router1----switch1----router2---switch2
l l l l l l l l l l l l-direct-tv box
l l l l l l l l l l l-blu-ray player
l l l l l l l l l l-xbox 360
l l l l l l l l l
[code]....
and i dont know what switch 2 is yet because my dad ordered it and it has come it yet, all i know is its a linksys Now the big problem I keep having is keeping everything up and running for more than a day. Ive already configured router 2 to a staic ip address of 192.168.1.151 and disabled DHSP server thing which cleared up some of the inital issues I was having. But I continue to be plagued with issues of computers saying there are duplicate names on the network and the internet only working on some devices most of the time and the internet going out completely after a day or two. Now when the internet only goes out for some devices its usually limited to everything thats not hooked directly into router 1.but everything hooked directly into router 1 still has internetand the basic hard restart of everything does nothing to solve the problem. The only real way Ive been able to solve things on a large scale for a short time frame is to unhook everything and setup reouter 1 and the computers that hook into it on day one. come back on day two and setup switch one and comback the next day and so on and so forth. and usually by day 5 everything has worked for about a day or two then Im back with nothing working.

I'm trying to transfer files from my wired desktop to my wireless laptop, and smaller files seem to transfer okay. Whenever I try to transfer a really large file, however, the internet and connectivity totally drops on my desktop (which is giving the file) and causes the laptop to lose the file. The desktop computer stays offline for about 1-2 minutes afterward before it either starts up again on its own or I reset the network adapter. I suppose it's important to note as well that the file transfer can fail at the very beginning, in the middle, or even at the very end, but my desktop computer always loses its connection whenever the interruption happens... but sometimes it can successfully get almost all the way through the file transferI tried following some of the steps in this case to confirm that I can ping and do all that jazz to my laptop and all of the services are running, since our problems seem similar. I've disabled all firewalls as well. However, since one computer is actually wired to the router, I don't think the solution will be quite the same

Main PC wired
HTPC Wireless
Win7
I am trying to transfer some blu-ray rips from the Main PC (wired) to the HTPC (wireless), but after 20-30 minutes it give me this error message and it can no longer locate the HTPC. i made sure the HTPC didn't so to "sleep" mode..
Something wrong with my home network or is it time to get a new router/adapter? everything else seems to work fine, except trying to transfer these huge files (10GB-20GB).

In my house I have a BT Business Hub wireless router at one end of my house. I am looking to extend the wireless range of my network into the kitchen at the other end of the house, which is a rather large distance away. The house is 200 years old with large corridors and thick walls. There is absolutely no wireless range from about halfway between the office and kitchen. I initially tried two powerline adapters which did not work. Having spoken with an electrician who carried out a rewire on the house, I have been advised that the two areas are on a separate ring main.I considered using two wireless range extenders, but have been told that the signal is halved for each extender that I use.So, I have had the idea of trying to use two DSL routers at each side of the house. There is a phone point in the office and also in the kitchen, where the second router would plug into. These are both on the same telephone line.

I'm trying to setup my wifi at home and want to cover all the areas under same SSID and allow roaming cross since one router can not cover 20000 sq ft over 3-4 levels.I anticipate at least 8 if not more to cover everywhere. How do I setup a WLAN network for myself. I have a cat6 cable running in quite a few rooms.Basically my end game is have uninterrupted wifi access everywhere in the house Possibly run a SIP based PBX over wifi wherever possible, close to 24 extensions.I also laid down cat6 in most rooms to allow to setup my own central media server with that as well but that's a different topic and forum I guess. Can I use the cat6 coming into the rooms, connect it to the wifi router and provide Internet access over wifi and use the router as a hub to connect a cat6 from the router for the media player and another one to a sip based Pbx extension or have the Pbx extension be on wifi?Damn sorry for such a confusing and loaded sentence.

The client is interested to deploy 2x new ACS 5.x and interested to setup split deployment between two ACS in two separate locations for load sharing, and configuration replication. At the same the client want an ability to make configuration changes on both ACS servers. According to Cisco ACS 5.x deployment notes all
Configurations must me make to a primary ACS servers and secondary servers will obtain configuration from the primary server which defeat the client requirements of the ability and capability to make changes to both server.
Question:
If I deploy two ACS servers in two different location as an independent servers, can I still replicate information between two servers? I know ACS 4.2 I can do replication between two servers.

I'm looking to deploy the Cisco 881 3G routers for a few mobile assets. The assets will use WIFI / WIMAX as their primary communications via the Ethernet interface and roll over to a 3G cellular connection when traveling outside of the WIFI / WI MAX coverage area. The WIFI / WI MAX network will solely be for the corporate network and will not required any VPN tunnels. When outside of the WIFI / WI MAX network, the asset will use the 3G cellular network via an IPSEC VPN tunnel.
My question - is it possible fire up the VPN tunnel only when connectivity failing over to the 3G connection and not when utilizing the Ethernet interface?

Need to deploy ms office compatibility pack via a gpo to a network I work on. I've extracted the exe and have the msi and cab files which I've placed in a network share and given full control permissions to everyone (I did this after it not working a few times with modify), everyone has full control on the 2 files as well.
I've created a new gpo "software deploy" under computer configuration, software, I've assigned a new package and typed the path in the following format \servershareo12.msi. I've moved a test pc into a test ou in ad and back in group policy management I've linked the software deploy gpo to this test ou. I've ran gpupdate /force on both ends.I've restarted the test box, nothing, repeatedly, I even edited the gpo to deploy the software under user and moved a test user into this test ou, same thing, nothing. I then went back to the config above using the computer config instead of user.

Attempting to upgrade from ASA 8.3.2, ASDM 6.3.4, Any Connect 2.5.1 to ASA 8.4(4)1, ASDM 6.4(9) and Any Connect 3.1.00495 using ASA 5505.
Client is Windows XP SP3 w/ IE7. Can log into the ASA web portal and starts to install via ActiveX. I get past the IE7 message bar to authorize installing the ActiveX control. I briefly see a message that says "ActiveX could not be launched" (I think. It is very fast) and then the install hangs w/ the message in the web connect dialog about the IE7 message bar. If I let the timer expire, the java install also fails. If I download the installer via the web portal, and install Any Connect via the downloaded installer, everything works fine.
Same problem w/ ASA 9.1.1, ASDM 7.1(1) and Any Connect 3.1.02026. I have added the web page address to the trusted zone, and checked all the zones for permissions to install ActiveX controls, etc. Worked w/ the older/original software when I remove the kill bit for Microsoft KB2736233. Have not installed any custom Any Connect profile to use transforms. I did see in the release notes some information on NO INSTALL ACTIVEX=0, but I think this applies to the per-install package only.

For my network the way it is setup is one building has the 2 main servers.simple wireless router and a few laptop that connect to it. a Wii and some other devices, all of them share media etc with no issue. Internet is not a problem either. One of the servers has a PCI wireless card and connects to another network.(network2)network 2 is able to share and play all the media off the service lets say 80% of the time.It also has a different internet provider and internet connection is not a problem but the wireless signal strength is low , (2 bars) or -55 to -82 it seams to jump around at.If you try to stream or play too much media it freezes on you. or if 2 devices on network 2 try to play something it freezes as well sometimes though when the signal is good -55 ish there is no issues. There is alot of wireless traffic in the area, i cant change that.and dont really want to buy a ranger extender or something $20 is what I have for parts if anything. If I were to put a 2nd wireless card in server 2 or Server 1 even. Also both the wireless router on network 2 and the pci card on server 2 are physically as close as hey can get.

I am trying to brainstorm some ideas for the best wireless set up in a house that is 2 stories and 8500 SQ Feet. The house is wired with ethernet jacks.
Option 1. ASUS RT-N66U and Hawking Hi-Gain HWREN1
Option 2. Two Apple Airport Extreme's at either end of the house.
Option 3. Asus RT-N66U and Linksys WRT54G (DD-WRT Firmware).
What about the placement of the equipment? Should there be one router/access point on each floor or just two at either end of the house.

deploy OTV using ASR 1001 between 2 data-centers? We want to acquire HSRP localization there, but at this moment I can only see lots docs are saying how to do this on N7K, not ASR. I saw it has a FHRP filtering enabled by default when the OTV configuration is done, and also see there is a access-list created by default call otv_filter_fhrp, Im just wondering besides this IP ACL there should be MAC ACL applied?

I was advised to use the Cisco 2504 WLC and 9 x Cisco AIR-AP1142N access points.I know that out of the box the AP's (in standalone versions) have the GUI enabled. Not being completley up with CLI etc, is the WLC GUI enabled straight out of the box? if not, is it complicated to get it up and running?

I have a 5508 with 15 APs 802.11b/g so far.A new area of the warehouse (indoor) is ready to be used with new wifi devices and I want to isolated the legacy operation from the new one, because new wifi clients are very sensitive. So I have a few question:
- Can I use my existing WLC (5508)?.
- What is a good 802.11n AP model for this environment?.
- What antennas to use with 802.11n APs?
- Is there any restriction on the WLC I should keep in mind?

Currently we have a CISCO 3020 VPN Concentrator to terminate Lan-to-Lan tunnels and have our mobile workers connect via CISCO VPN client (300 users-employees and contractors-). Since this device is coming to an EOL this year we purchased a CISCO 5520 (below are the current licenses on it)
The licensing seems rather complicated, therefore this is my question:
- What VPN solution do you recommend for our users and contractors? it is my understanding the CISCO VPN client does not work with ASA 5500 series devices
- Is there a license needed to deploy VPN solutions for our remote users(employees/contractors)?

I'm setting up a large rambler house with a large footprint, and the only broadband connections are at opposing points of the house. Right now, I'm using two Linksys WRT54GS routers running Tomato in a WDS setup. A router, positioned in the middle point of the house, acts as a wireless access point so that the computer on the far end of the house can pickup the wireless signal. (One WRT54GS on its own doesn't have the power to go all the way across the house.)
I would like simplify things with a single, hi-power, hi-speed router at one end of the house. I know I can get better speeds with Draft N routers, but I need more signal strength as well. Are there any products currently available that can perform much better than my WRT54GS routers right now?
I need to go about 125 feet, through a number of walls.

I got a refurbished EA4500 (directly from Cisco) last week. I have been having a few issues, which I have found (not too great) workarounds for. However, the latest issue has me stumped, and is unacceptable.Whenever I am transferring files between 2 computers, I get kind of OK speed (5 MB/s). However, while this transfer happens, no other device can connect to the net. Actually, even trying to go to router home page (192.168.1.1) times out.The clients still say they are connected to the router, but I just can't get anywhere. As soon as the file transfer finishes, everything goes back to normal.EA4500 replaced a WRT54G. Never had any problems with that router. It was such a workhorse. Just needed to upgrade to a n-router.I am on the latest non-cloud firmware.I have reduced the MTU size to 1200. Not sure that matters.
