Intermittent Latency Spikes

Sep 10, 2011

I have reason to be suspicious as to the game's relevance. These spikes are characterized by no packet loss, as measured by pingplotter and winmtr (more specifically, there is packet loss, but I've come to understand that because it does not continue on to subsequent jumps it's not an issue), and latency leaping to between 250 and 600ms across multiple hops, seemingly without pattern or form, for intervals

Here are some summaries of some extended pingplotter sessions. The suspicion that this is not entirely WoW related is recent, so I'm working on seeing if I can get similar results from some other sources.

Way To Play Games Without Intermittent Latency

Jan 26, 2012

When I play games that are downloaded to my PC from Aeria games I run into intermittent latency. It happens every 6 minutes and last for about 4 minutes so for every ten minutes I get to play about 6 minutes. It only happens with Aeria games; all of them.Is this an issue with my connection to the server or is it possible that it is due to security software?

Huge Latency / Ping Spikes At Random Times With No Apparent Cause

Jun 20, 2012

Since about 3 weeks ago my DSL has been getting totally random ping spikes, from under 40 to over 1500MS for minutes to hours on end. Nobody else is using my internet, I've verified this. There is nothing sucking up bandwidth on any connected device or computer, as far as I can tell through troubleshooting to the best of my ability. I tried switching to a Cisco X2000 modem/router combo and it did nothing, still totally random latency. Also, when I called AT&T about this, they didn't even know what ping was. They ran an upload/download speed test (which is still mostly consistent regardless of latency) and told me I was basically making the issue up.

Lag Spikes On My PC Not On Any Other Computer In House

Oct 8, 2011

I've been having problems with my internet on my PC. I use it mostly for gaming (League of Legends specifically but it's also hooked up to my Xbox for internet connection), and I frequently (about every minute or so, sometimes more) get bad lag spikes when playing games. My character will freeze in place while I click wildly about and then appear somewhere else (and die or lose a kill).

The thing is, I'm connected to my Apple Airport which all other devices in the house are connected to (Wii, dad's Mac desktop, my Mac laptop), and only my PC gets this lag. Seems like a fairly generic problem but I have no idea what to do about it, so if you need more information let me know.

Random Internet Lag Spikes

Jan 16, 2011

I am playing a game, like Battlefield Bad Company 2. Every 5-15 minutes, I get 3 lag spikes. When I get the lag spikes, everyone who is using my internet, also gets it the same time as me. So my computer is not the problem. For example: I am just running, shooting people (online), and then, randomly, people are running on the spot for like 3 seconds, and then they teleport somewhere in front of them. And then it goes back to normal, then it happens again. It will happen 3 times.

Realtek RT8191SE Lag Spikes?

Jan 10, 2013

Just recently built a new system with this wifi card in it, and I am experiencing random lag spikes of up at 2000ms when pinging my E3000 router. I've tried the stock firmware on the router as well as the tomato variety I was using. I've tried both Windows 8 and Linuxmint 14 and the problem still exists. I did not have this issue on my laptop, nor do I have the problem with my wife's laptop. Is there any sort of setting in the bios that might affect this that I am overlooking?I'm about to just call timewarner and have them relocate the cable modem to this room so I do not have to deal with wireless.

How To Improve Latency And Routing

Feb 22, 2012

I play an online game, and latency is critical. I usually play at one server, and typically I get around 100ms ping. Today, when I joined the server I noticed my ping is now 40-45ms. My IP has not changed, internet service has not changed, service of server has not changed. It's almost as if the latency *just got better*. I know there are probably a huge number of factors regarding this, but I'm wondering how I could investigate this. Preferably, I'd like to keep my latency at 40ms, but I have no idea how it got there.

Random Increases In Latency

Jan 12, 2013

I run windows 7 on a Gateway DX4860 desktop and my problem has been occurring for a long time. I casually play games like league of legends and I believe my problem lies within my computer rather than the network itself because my problem is latency spikes where when I start games with 90 ping, it quickly spikes to 300+ ping ~ 5 minutes into the game and then into the thousands making it absolutely unplayable. I have had this problem on 3 different internet providers and the problem still remains; HOWEVER, while hooked directly to my computer with an Ethernet cord, I have ZERO problems. The house I am living at now doesn't allow me to connect directly.

High Latency When Any Bandwidth Is Used?

Aug 14, 2011

Over the last couple of weeks I've been noticing high amounts of jitter and latency over my home network. I've come to some conclusions but am not 100% sure if they are correct or not. When one computer on the network opens a web page, loads a video off youtube or downloads something all of the computers on the network have considerably increased latency for a short period.I've tested 3 computers over WiFI watching ping commands and will show some below in a moment. Tested 1 computer using ethernet to connect to the router and its still affected by the issue. Ive also actually used the router to ping an outside source while the ping is increased and this is also affected. This has only been happening for the last 2 weeks.

Heres a list of hardware being used/software and os.

Windows 7 with a Belkin G enabled usb NIC
Windows XP with a realtek rtl8139/810x
Windows 7 (Friends laptop)
Router = Netgear dg834g
Settings

[code]...

So I've read up on QoS and understand that my router doesnt support it but I still dont understand how 1 person using youtube can affect my network that much. As before 2 weeks ago it did not affect it what so ever, and it didnt in my old house either. So what this means is that browsing is fine on the network, just whenever you try and play a game or anything that requires low latency anyone touching the network means you get massive jitter.

Wireless :: Connection Lag Spikes Every 5 To 10 Minutes?

While browsing the interwebz I don't really notice the lag spikes because they are only a few seconds long.Changes I have made (PC):

Disabled Client for Microsoft Networks
Disabled ANOD Network Security Filter driver

Random Lag Spikes While Playing Games?

Oct 11, 2012

I have Planet modem ade-4400 linked to a Digitus ethernet Dn 5001a that I use to connect my 2nd PC.The problem is that everytime, both PCs are connected I constantly get lag spikes while playing games. Also, seemingly on random occasions, no matter what programs I run in the background my connection gets disabled with a yellow exclamation mark over my network icon. I get a "The default gateway is not available" error once I troubleshoot, and the connection works fine afterwards.

However, recently after I updated the windows I think, I get another error that says "The connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the Internet is broken" along with the gateway one. Also, recently, I started having lag spikes regardless of the other computer being connected to mine after the error, and once I turn on my pc. Could it be somehow related to Microsoft security essentials? Since I've installed it at about the same time when the lag-after-the-error started happening.

Error seems to happen more often when I watch something on the internet, or when I quickly browse through the web-pages, or when I'm downloading something. I'm using Windows 7, and another thing to note is that the other computer DOES NOT receive these kinds of errors, and I do believe it does not lag while playing games. The lag after the error and after I start up my pc goes away after some time.

D-Link DIR-655 :: Consistent Lag Spikes With N Adapters?

Sep 4, 2012

It has always been the case with my laptop and another usb N adapter I bought a while back but this time when i upgraded my PC and got a DWA-552 adapter and the problem occurs again I was forced to try and debug it.PingPlotter had a constant ping check on my router's network address every second, every few minutes and sometimes seconds apart there would be 100+ ping spikes which always correlate with troublesome lag spikes in-game. And that's with Roaming Policy set to very low. Once set to normal it got much worse with 500+ ping spikes, and just to cement the correlation I set the policy to very high and 1000+ ping spikes happened.Could it be that DIR655 incorrectly reports to the adapter that it is about to drop the connection forcing a roam that results in nothing but a latency hiccup? I am not well versed in wireless mechanics. These ping spikes are often accompanied with packet loss.My DIR655 has several G cards connected to it (which work fine btw, my 552 seems to work fine in G mode too though I haven't tested it extensively yet -  may be forced to since dir655 appears to be bugged with N mode) and several N cards that aren't used for gaming so this issue has never been a problem before.

D-Link DIR-655 :: Ridiculously Inconsistent Latency

Dec 23, 2012

we just switched to a DIR-655 from a terrible Rosewill router a few weeks ago. We've been having some problems, and I've been trying desperatly to figure out what exactly is causing them so I can fix it.

Problem:
The router will periodically, and seemingly at random, dive into huge latency spikes. As of writing this, I am running a one thousand ping latency run from CMD, and I've watched response times go from 15ms average to 300ms average. The time of day seems irrelevant, as is what anyone on the network is doing. After a fresh restart of the router, everything runs smoothly for about 10 minutes, at which point everything goes ham.

Details:
I am using a DIR-655 D-Link router with a Cisco DPC3008 modem provided by Comcast.
Router P/N: BIR655ANA....B1
Router S/N: F35F5BC0019A777
Router Firmware: 2.10NA
Connection Type: DHCP

I've run the Modem directly into my PC, the connection is perfect. I've hard resetted multiple times, as well as run it with all of the above settings on/off. Updating the firmware does nothing. I've moved the router/modem apart so as not to cause signal interference.

Things I Can Try
I want to try running the router with wireless disabled to see if some sort of interference is being caused by the other computers on the network, or if one of them is hogging bandwidth.
I want to try running a program that can monitor or analyze each stage of the connection to see where the problem is.
I want to downgrade to an earlier firmware.

Wireless Connection - Huge Random Lag Spikes?

Apr 27, 2011

This has been a problem for quite a while now, jumping from Shaw to Telus,I have completely exhausted, and I have no idea what's wrong.I live in a household with another family, and we share internet connections, Telus Fiber Optik, as of now. Me and my brother both have our own computer and are connected via wireless adapter, and the other family has one laptop with wireless connection.

The problem would be that randomly, the internet would slow down considerably, with pings going insanely high, like over 9000ms (not joking). At first,I thought I was just too far away from the router. So I moved to a room directly under the router, and the internet was completely fine for around 1 week, then the random ping spikes started to happen again. Now, I've tried tweaking wireless settings, and checking to make sure its just not my wireless adapter, however my brother's adapter is new, but it has the same problem too, so I doubt its the adapters fault.

Internet Randomly Cuts Out And Lag Spikes Only Desktop

Also when playing online games (ex swtor) random lag spikes that last for minutes+ while the internet works just fine in browser. Whenever a problem occurs it always is fine just loading web pages, just downloads/online has problems.I have tried moving my computer around the house, trying wireless and lan and today i installed windows 7 64bit (was 32bit) hoping for a difference and still nothing. After this fresh install every driver is fully up to date. As the adapter only has wireless it would seem the problem also occurs with mobo (since plugged in for lan) Some bad connection in the case? edit Just open up the case everything is connected unless something is just broken.
